Abstract
Borinic acids [R2B(OH)] and their chelate derivatives are a subclass of organoborane compounds used in cross-coupling reactions, catalysis, medicinal chemistry, polymer or optoelectronics materials. In this paper, we review the recent advances in the synthesis of diarylborinic acids and their four-coordinated analogs. The main strategies to build up borinic acids rely either on the addition of organometallic reagents to boranes (B(OR)3, BX3, aminoborane, arylboronic esters) or the reaction of triarylboranes with a ligand (diol, amino alcohol, etc.). After general practical considerations of borinic acids, an overview of the main synthetic methods, their scope and limitations is provided. We also discuss some mechanistic aspects.

Abstract
A chiral Schiff-base boron difluoride complex bearing a diethylamino group was synthesized. Its photophysical properties were investigated and compared with those of its non-substituted analogue. The complex was found to exhibit solvatofluorochromism with bluish-white emission in moderately polar solvents and intense blue emission in nonpolar solvent. Circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) properties were also examined and it was found that the absolute value of the luminescence dissymmetry factor (g lum) increases significantly in the KBr-dispersed pellet state compared to the solution state. Notably, CPL intensity of the complex enhanced approximately three times upon addition of CH3SO3H in CH2Cl2. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were conducted to further understand the photophysical properties.

Abstract
A series of chiral Schiff-base boron difluoride complexes was synthesized and their photophysical properties were examined. These complexes showed multi-colour (blue, yellow and red) photoluminescence in solution and in the solid state with good emission quantum yield (Φ) depending on the π-systems of the ligands. The chiral complexes exhibited circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) with an absolute luminescence dissymmetry factor (glum) of up to the 1.3 × 10-3 in solution and 1.9 × 10-2 in the drop-cast film state. Density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent (TD) DFT calculations were conducted to further understand the photophysical properties.

Abstract
8-Hydroxyquinolin-5-sulfonic acid (8HQSA) was combined with 3-pyridineboronic acid (3PBA) or 4-pyridineboronic acid (4PBA) to give two zwitterionic monoboron complexes in crystalline form. The compounds were characterized by elemental analysis, single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies, and IR, 1H NMR, UV-Visible, and luminescence spectroscopy. The analyses revealed compounds with boron atoms adopting tetrahedral geometry. In the solid state, the molecular components are linked by charge-assisted (B)(O-H···−O(S) and N+-H···O(S) hydrogen bonds aside from C-H···O contacts and π···π interactions, as shown by Hirshfeld surface analyses and 2D fingerprint plots. The luminescence properties were characterized in terms of the emission behavior in solution and the solid state, showing emission in the bluish-green region in solution and large positive solvatofluorochromism, caused by intramolecular charge transfer. According to TD-DFT calculations at the M06-2X/6-31G(d) level of theory simulating an ethanol solvent environment, the emission properties are originated from π-π * and n-π * HOMO-LUMO transitions.

Abstract
The increasing importance of visible light photoredox catalysis as a powerful strategy
for the activation of small molecules require the development of new effective radical
sources and photocatalysts. The unique properties of organoboron compounds have contributed
significantly to the rapid progress of photocatalysis. Since the first work on the topic in
2005, many researchers have appreciated the role of boron-containing compounds in photocatalysis,
and this is reflected in several publications. In this review, we highlight the utility of
organoboron compounds in various photocatalytic reactions enabling the construction of carbon-
carbon and carbon-heteroatom bonds. The dual role of organoboron compounds in photocatalysis
is highlighted by their applications as reactants and as well as organic photocatalysts.

Abstract
A fluorescent bis(8-oxyquinolato) diborinic complex with a central 2,2'-biphenyl backbone 1 and its octafluoro analogue 2 were synthesized to study the optical-structural relationship of sterically encumbered molecules featuring close intramolecular π-stacking interactions involving chromophore units. The crystal structure of 1 revealed a unique π-stacked arrangement of two pendant phenyl groups and two 8-oxyquinolato ligands (Q) located in the inner part of the complex. Unlike 1, the closely related complex 2 features conformational isomerism, and two major forms, namely 2-syn and 2-anti, are observed in solution to a varying extent depending on the solvent polarity. Form 2-syn, a geometrical analogue of 1, is preferable in polar solutions, whereas its rotational isomer 2-anti featuring π-stacking interactions between the terminal phenyl group and Q ligand dominates in benzene and chloromethane solutions. The observed conformational equilibria strongly affect the optical properties of the system, specifically leading to a significant increase of the quantum yield of emission (from 22% in MeCN to 38% in benzene) accompanied by a bathochromic shift (Δλ = 10 nm) of absorption and hypsochromic shifts (Δλ = -8 nm) of emission spectra with decreasing solvent polarity. This effect was ascribed to the variation in frontier orbital distributions.

Abstract
This contribution is devoted to the first electron density studies of a luminescent oxyquinolinato boron complex in the solid state. ortho-Phenylenediboronic acid mixed with 8-hydroxyquinoline in dioxane forms high-quality single crystals via slow solvent evaporation, which allows successful high resolution data collection (sin θ/λ = 1.2 Å-1) and charge density distribution modeling. Particular attention has been paid to the boron-oxygen fragment connecting the two parts of the complex, and to the solvent species exhibiting anharmonic thermal motion. The experiment and theory compared rather well in terms of atomic charges and volumes, except for the boron centers. Boron atoms, as expected, constitute the most electron-deficient species in the complex molecule, whereas the neighboring oxygen and carbon atoms are the most significantly negatively charged ones. This part of the molecule appears to be very much involved in the charge transfer occurring between the acid fragment and oxyquinoline moiety leading to the observed fluorescence, as supported by the time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) results and the generated transition density maps. TDDFT calculations indicated that p-type atomic orbitals contributing to the HOMO-1, HOMO, and LUMO play the major role in the lowest energy transitions, and enabled further comparison with the charge density features, which is discussed in details. Furthermore, the results confirmed the known fact the Q ligand character is most important for the spectroscopic properties of this class of complexes.

Abstract
Multicomponent reactions are a valuable tool for the synthesis of functional π-electron systems. Two different approaches can be taken into account for accessing the target structures. In the more conventional scaffold approach an already existing chromophore is coupled with other components to give a complex functional π-system. Here, electronically monotonous components can also be introduced, which may exert synergistic electronic effects within the novel compound. The more demanding chromophore concept generates a complete π-electron system and a scaffold concurrently. The latter approach is particularly stimulating for methodologists since π-systems might be accessible from simple starting materials. This review encompasses the advances in the preparation of functional π-electron systems via multicomponent processes during the past few years, based both on the scaffold and chromophore concepts. Besides the synthetic strategies the most important properties, i.e. redox potentials, absorption and emission maxima or fluorescence quantum yields, of the synthesized molecules are highlighted.

Abstract
In situ formation of aryl Grignard under Barbier condition and diisopropylaminoborane as boron source allows a complete control of the addition onto the boron electrophile. Analytically pure borinic acid derivatives were produced at the gram scale without column chromatography and isolated as borinates adducts, with ethanolamine or 8-hydroxyquinoline, after workup.

Abstract
The reaction of 8-(trimethylsiloxy)quinoline (QOTMS) with BCl3 and
(aryl)BCl2 forms QOBCl2 and QOBCl(aryl). The subsequent addition
of stoichiometric AlCl3 follows one of two paths, dependent on the steric demands of the
QO ligand and the electrophilicity of the resulting borenium cation. The phenyl- and
5-hexylthienylborenium cations, QOBPh+ and
QOBTh+, are formed, whereas QOBCl+ is
not. Instead, AlCl3 preferentially binds with QOBCl2 at oxygen,
forming QOBCl2⋅AlCl3, rather than abstracting chloride. A
modest increase in the steric demands around oxygen, by installing a methyl group at the 7-position
of the quinolato ligand, switches the reactivity with AlCl3 back to chloride abstraction,
allowing formation of QOBCl+. All the
prepared borenium cations are highly chlorophilic and exhibit significant interaction with
AlCl4− resulting in an equilibrium concentration of Lewis acidic
“AlCl3” species. The presence of
“AlCl3” species limits the alkyne substrates compatible with
these borenium systems, with reaction of
[QOBPh][AlCl4] with 1-pentyne exclusively
yielding the cyclotrimerised product, 1,3,5-tripropylbenzene. In contrast,
QOBPh+ and QOBTh+ systems effect the
syn-1,2-carboboration of 3-hexyne. DFT calculations at the
M06-2X/6-311G(d,p)/PCM(DCM) level confirm that the higher migratory aptitude of Ph versus Me leads
to a lower barrier to 1,2-carboboration relative to 1,1-carboboration.
