Chemical Flexibility of Atomically Precise Metal Clusters

Ligand-protected metal clusters possess hybrid properties that seamlessly combine an inorganic core with an organic ligand shell, imparting them exceptional chemical flexibility and unlocking remarkable application potential in diverse fields. Leveraging chemical flexibility to expand the library of available materials and stimulate the development of new functionalities is becoming an increasingly pressing requirement. This Review focuses on the origin of chemical flexibility from the structural analysis, including intra-cluster bonding, inter-cluster interactions, cluster-environments interactions, metal-to-ligand ratios, and thermodynamic effects. In the introduction, we briefly outline the development of metal clusters and explain the differences and commonalities of M(I)/M(I/0) coinage metal clusters. Additionally, we distinguish the bonding characteristics of metal atoms in the inorganic core, which give rise to their distinct chemical flexibility. Section 2 delves into the structural analysis, bonding categories, and thermodynamic theories related to metal clusters. In the following sections 3 to 7, we primarily elucidate the mechanisms that trigger chemical flexibility, the dynamic processes in transformation, the resultant alterations in structure, and the ensuing modifications in physical-chemical properties. Section 8 presents the notable applications that have emerged from utilizing metal clusters and their assemblies. Finally, in section 9, we discuss future challenges and opportunities within this area.

Recent progress in dichalcophosphate coinage metal clusters and superatoms

Atomically precise clusters of group 11 metals (Cu, Ag, and Au) attract considerable attention owing to their remarkable structure and fascinating properties. One of the unique subclasses of these clusters is based on dichalcophosphate ligands of [(RO)₂PE₂]^- type (E = S or Se, and R = alkyl). These ligands successfully stabilise the most diverse Cu, Ag, and Au clusters and superatoms, spanning from simple ones to amazing assemblies featuring unusual structural and bonding patterns. It is noteworthy that such complicated clusters are assembled directly from cheap and simple reagents, metal(I) salts and dichalcophosphate anions. This reaction, when performed in the presence of a hydride or other anion sources, or foreign metal ions, results in hydrido- or anion-templated homo- or heteronuclear structures. In this feature article, we survey the recent advances in this exciting field, highlighting the powerful synthetic capabilities of the system "a metal(I) salt - [(RO)₂PX₂]^- ligands - a templating anion or borohydride" as an inexhaustible platform for the creation of new atomically precise clusters, superatoms, and nanoalloys.

Synthesis of Two Neutral Silver Alkynyl Nanoclusters by a Single Divalent Tetrahedral Anion Template and a Study of Their Optical Features

The synthesis of nanoclusters from simple structural units is usually a challenging process because of the complexity and unpredictability of the self-assembly process of these types of compounds. Herein, two new neutral 19-nuclearity silver nanoclusters based on alkynyl ligands with the formulas [(CrO₄)@Ag₁₉(C≡C^tBu)₈(Ph₂PO₂)₆(tfa)₃(CH₃OH)₂] (1) and [(SO₄)@Ag₁₉(C≡C^tBu)₈(Ph₂PO₂)₆(tfa)₃(CH₃OH)₂] (2), in which tfa = trifluoroacetate, were synthesized, and their structures were investigated by single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction, electrospray ionization mass spectrometry, elemental analyses, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The surface ligands of Ph₂PO₂H and trifluoroacetate were assembled through hydrogen bonding, metal-aromatic interactions, and coordination bonding around 19 silver atoms as the metal skeletons of the nanoclusters. Sulfate and chromate anions, as a template within the metal skeleton of clusters through bonding with silver atoms, stabilized the structure. In addition, the UV-vis absorption spectroscopy, luminescence properties, and thermal stability of the nanoclusters were investigated.

Interstitial hydrides in nanoclusters can reduce M(I) (M = Cu, Ag, Au) to M(0) and form stable superatoms

High-nuclearity clusters resemble the closest model between the determination of atomically precise chemical species and the bulk metallic version thereof, and both impacts on a variety of applications, including catalysis, optics, sensors, and new energy sources.  Our interest lies with the nanoclusters of the Group 11 (Cu, Ag, Au) metals stabilized by dichalcogenido and hydrido ligands.  Herein, we describe superatoms formed by the clusters and their relationship with precursor hydrido clusters.  Specifically, our concept seeks to demonstrate a possible correlation that exist between hydrido clusters (and nanoalloys) and the formation of superatoms, with the loss of hydrides and typically with release of H 2 gas.  These reactions appear to be internal self-redox reactions and require no additional reducing agent, but does seem to require a similar core structure.  Knowledge of such processes could provide insight into how clusters grow and an understanding in bridging the atomically precise cluster - metal nanoparticle mechanism.

A New Synthetic Methodology in the Preparation of Bimetallic Chalcogenide Clusters via Cluster-to-Cluster Transformations

A decanuclear silver chalcogenide cluster, [Ag₁₀(Se){Se₂P(OⁱPr)₂}₈] (2) was isolated from a hydride-encapsulated silver diisopropyl diselenophosphates, [Ag₇(H){Se₂P(OⁱPr)₂}₆], under thermal condition. The time-dependent NMR spectroscopy showed that 2 was generated at the first three hours and the hydrido silver cluster was completely consumed after thirty-six hours. This method illustrated as cluster-to-cluster transformations can be applied to prepare selenide-centered decanuclear bimetallic clusters, [Cu_xAg_10-x(Se){Se₂P(OⁱPr)₂}₈] (x = 0-7, 3), via heating [Cu_xAg_7-x(H){Se₂P(OⁱPr)₂}₆] (x = 1-6) at 60 °C. Compositions of 3 were accurately confirmed by the ESI mass spectrometry. While the crystal 2 revealed two un-identical [Ag₁₀(Se){Se₂P(OⁱPr)₂}₈] structures in the asymmetric unit, a co-crystal of [Cu₃Ag₇(Se){Se₂P(OⁱPr)₂}₈]_0.6[Cu₄Ag₆(Se){Se₂P(OⁱPr)₂}₈]_0.4 ([3a]_0.6[3b]_0.4) was eventually characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Even though compositions of 2, [3a]_0.6[3b]_0.4 and the previous published [Ag₁₀(Se){Se₂P(OEt)₂}₈] (1) are quite similar (10 metals, 1 Se^2-, 8 ligands), their metal core arrangements are completely different. These results show that different synthetic methods by using different starting reagents can affect the structure of the resulting products, leading to polymorphism.

All-Carboxylate-Protected Superatomic Silver Nanocluster with an Unprecedented Rhombohedral Ag8 Core

We report the synthesis and structure of the first all-carboxylate-protected superatomic silver nanocluster. It was prepared by heating a dimethylformamide solution of perfluoroglutaric acid and AgNO₃ under alkaline conditions, yielding a single crystal of [(CH₃)₂NH₂]₆[Ag₈(pfga)₆]. The [Ag₈(pfga)₆]^6- cluster has a rhombohedral Ag₈⁶⁺ core, with each of its faces protected by one dianionic perfluoroglutarate (pfga) ligand. Electronic-structure analysis from density functional theory confirms the stability of this two-electron cluster due to the shell closing of the superatomic orbital in the (1S)² configuration and explains the optical absorption of the cluster in the visible region as the transition from 1S to 1P orbital. The [Ag₈(pfga)₆]^6- cluster emits bright green-yellow light in THF solution and bright orange light in the solid state. This work opens the door to using the widely available carboxylic acids to synthesize atomically precise Ag clusters of attractive properties.

Hydride-encapsulated bimetallic clusters supported by 1,1-dithiolates

Photoinitiated Charge Transfer in a Triangular Silver(I) Hydride Complex and Its Oxophilicity

The photoexcitation of a triangular silver(I) hydride complex, [Ag₃ (μ₃ -H)(μ₂ -dcpm)₃ ](PF₆ )₂ ([P](PF₆ )₂ , dcpm=bis(dicyclohexylphosphino)methane), designed with "UV-silent" bis-phosphine ligands, provokes hydride-to-Ag₃ single and double electron transfer. The nature of the electronic transitions has been authenticated by absorption and photodissociation spectroscopy in parallel with high-level quantum-chemical computations utilizing the GW method and Bethe-Salpeter equation (GW-BSE). Specific photofragments of mass-selected [P]²⁺ ions testify to charge transfer and competing pathways resulting from the unique [Ag₃ (μ₃ -H)]²⁺ scaffold. This structural motif of [P](PF₆ )₂ has been unequivocally verified by ¹ H NMR spectroscopy in concert with DFT and X-ray diffraction structural analysis, which revealed short equilateral Ag-Ag distances (d_AgAg =3.08 Å) within the range of argentophilic interactions. The reduced radical cation [P]^{. +} exhibits strong oxophilicity, forming [P+O₂ ]^.+ ,which is a model intermediate for silver oxidation catalysis.

Synthesis and structural characterization of inverse-coordination clusters from a two-electron superatomic copper nanocluster

We have synthesized and structurally characterized a series of centred cuboctahedral copper clusters, namely [Cu13{S2CNR2}6{C[triple bond, length as m-dash]CR'}4](PF6), 1a-d (where a: R = n Bu, R' = CO2Me; b: R = n Bu, R' = CO2Et; c: R = iPr, R' = CO2Et; d: R = n Pr, R' = 3,5-(CF3)2C6H3); [Cu12(μ12-S){S2CNR2}6{C[triple bond, length as m-dash]CR'}4], 2a-c; [Cu12(μ12-Cl){S2CNR2}6{C[triple bond, length as m-dash]CR'}4](PF6), 3a-e (where e: R = n Bu, R' = Ph); [Cu12(μ12-Br){S2CN n Bu2}6{C[triple bond, length as m-dash]CPh}4](PF6), 4e; and [Cu12(μ12-Cl)(μ3-Cl){S2CN n Bu2}6{C[triple bond, length as m-dash]CCO2Me}3]+ 5a. Cluster 1a is the first structurally characterized copper cluster having a Cu13 centered cuboctahedral arrangement, a miniature of the bulk copper fcc structure. Furthermore, the partial Cu(0) character in the 2-electron superatoms 1 was confirmed by XANES. Inverse coordination clusters 2-5 are the first examples of copper clusters containing main group elements (Cl, Br, S) with a hyper-coordination number, twelve. A combined theoretical and experimental study was performed, which shows that the central copper (formally Cu1-) in nanoclusters 1 can be replaced by chalcogen/halogen atoms, resulting in the formation of clusters 2-5 which show enhanced luminescence properties and increase in the ionic component of the host-guest interaction as Br ≈ Cl > S > Cu, which is consistent with the Cu-X Wiberg indices. The new compounds have been characterized by ESI-MS, 1H, 13C NMR, IR, UV-visible, emission spectroscopy, and the structures 2a-b, 3d-e, 4e and 5a were established by X-ray diffraction analysis.

Thermochromic Luminescent Materials and Multi-Emission Bands in d10 Clusters

Thermochromic luminescent compounds with d¹⁰ metal ions are interesting materials for applications such as sensors or display devices. However, these properties are difficult to predict prior to their synthesis. In this communication, we investigated materials with structural assemblies known to be responsible of distinct luminescence mechanisms and show that they can be interesting potential thermometers. Thus, we compared the synthesis of a zinc halide and a copper halide based compounds which only differ in their ability to create clusters with metallophilic interactions. The compounds synthesized by hydrothermal method have been structurally characterized by Single-crystal X-ray diffraction, Solid-State NMR, FTIR, UV-Visible spectroscopy, thermal analysis and EPR. The photoluminescence properties of the two materials have been characterized at different temperatures. The copper bromide compound shows luminescence thermochromism in a wide spectrum of colors owing to the formation of clusters generating multi-emission bands while the zinc bromide exhibits a single emission band and no thermochromism.

Isolation of an unusual [Cu6] nanocluster through sequential addition of copper(i) to a polynucleating ligand

Addition of 2 equiv. of CuI to a [Cu]₄ multimetallic complex results in cluster formation leading to the isolation of a rare bicapped tetrahedral [Cu₆I₂] cluster that is stabilised by two conformationally constrained polynucleating ligands.

Coinage Metal Hydrides: Synthesis, Characterization, and Reactivity

Hydride complexes of copper, silver, and gold encompass a broad array of structures, and their distinctive reactivity has enabled dramatic recent advances in synthesis and catalysis. This Review summarizes the synthesis, characterization, and key stoichiometric reactions of isolable or observable coinage metal hydrides. It discusses catalytic processes in which coinage metal hydrides are known or probable intermediates, and presents mechanistic studies of selected catalytic reactions. The purpose of this Review is to convey how developments in coinage metal hydride chemistry have led to new organic transformations, and how developments in catalysis have in turn inspired the synthesis of reactive new complexes.

Polyhydrido Copper Clusters: Synthetic Advances, Structural Diversity, and Nanocluster-to-Nanoparticle Conversion

Metal hydride clusters have historically been studied to unravel their aesthetically pleasing molecular structures and interesting properties, especially toward hydrogen related applications. Central to this work is the hydride ligand, H¯, the smallest closed-shell spherical anion known. Two new developments in polyhydrido nanocluster chemistry include the determination of heretofore unknown hydride coordination modes and novel structural constructs, and conversion from the molecular entities to rhombus-shaped copper nanoparticles (CuNPs). These advances, together with hydrogen evolution and catalysis, have provided both experimentalists and theorists with a rich scientific directive to further explore. The isolation of hexameric [{(Ph3P)CuH}6] (Stryker reagent) could be regarded as the springboard for the recent emergence of polyhydrido copper cluster chemistry due to its utilization in a variety of organic chemical transformations. The stability of clusters of various nuclearity was improved through phosphine, pyridine, and carbene type ligands. Our focus lies with the isolation of novel copper (poly)hydride clusters using mostly the phosphor-1,1-dithiolato type ligands. We found such chalcogen-stabilized clusters to be exceptionally air and moisture stable over a wide range of nuclearities (Cu7 to Cu32). In this Account, we (i) report on state-of-the-art copper hydride cluster chemistry, especially with regards to the diverse and novel structural types generally, and newly discovered hydride coordination modes in particular, (ii) demonstrate the indispensable power of neutron diffraction for the unambiguous assignment and location of hydride ligand(s) within a cluster, and (iii) prove unique transformations that can occur not only between well characterized high nuclearity clusters, but also how such clusters can transform to uniquely shaped nanoparticles of several nanometers in diameter through copper hydride reduction. The increase in the number of low- to high-nuclearity hydride clusters allows for different means by which they can be classified. We chose a classification based on the coordination mode of hydride ligand within the cluster. This includes copper clusters associated with bridging (μ2-H) and capping (μ3-H) hydride modes, followed by an interstitial (μ4-H) hydride mode that was introduced for the first time into octa- and hepta-nuclear copper clusters stabilized by dichalcogen-type ligands. This breakthrough provided a means to explore higher nuclearity polyhydrido nanoclusters, which contain both capping (μ3-H) and interstitial (μ(4-6)-H) hydrides. The presence of bidentate ligands having mixed S/P dative sites led to air- and moisture-stable copper hydride nanoclusters. The formation of rhombus-shaped nanoparticles (CuNPs) from copper polyhydrides in the presence of excess borohydrides suggests the presence of metal hydrides as intermediates during the formation of nanoparticles.

Accurate yet feasible computations of resonance Raman spectra for metal complexes in solution: [Ru(bpy)3](2+) as a case study

Herein we present a new and promising approach for the high-resolution modeling of vibrational resonance Raman spectra of metal complexes in solution. The model explicitly includes Duschinsky couplings, solvent effects, and anharmonic corrections in a computational tool able to treat large molecular systems containing transition metals.
