Abstract
The reduction of stable trivalent lanthanide species (Ln(III)) by the excited states of organic chromophores is the basis of photocatalytic divalent lanthanide-mediated reduction reactions. While indirect evidence of the photochemical formation of the reactive Ln(II) species is abundant, direct spectroscopic evidence of their presence is scarce. Here, nine chromophores with absorptions covering the near UV and visible ranges were systematically investigated in the presence of Ln(III) ions to evaluate their ability to reduce Eu(III) upon excitation with visible light to the catalytically active Eu(II) species. Irradiated mixtures of Eu(III) and the chromophores were characterized using UV-vis absorption and emission and EPR spectroscopy. Several of the chromophore-Eu(III) combinations were competent photocatalysts in the presence of N,N-diisopropylethylamine or Zn terminal reductants. These results demonstrate that a variety of visible-absorbing chromophores can efficiently generate reactive Eu(II) from Eu(III) to catalyze Ln(II)-mediated reduction reactions.

Abstract
In this study, we propose a practical approach for producing a heterobimetallic Ni(II)-Ce(III) diimine complex from an extended salen-type ligand (H2L) to serve as an electrocatalyst for CO2 reduction and demonstrate an outstanding overall efficiency of 99.6% of the cerium-nickel complex and integrate it into applicable cell assemblies. We optimize not only the catalyst, but the operational conditions enabling successful CO2 electrolysis over extended periods at different current densities. A comparison of electrochemical behavior in H-cell and zero-gap cell electrolyzers suggests potential applications for industrial scale-up. In the H-cell electrolyzer configuration, the most elevated efficiency in CO production was achieved with a selectivity of 56.96% at -1.01 V vs RHE, while HCOO- formation exhibited a selectivity of 32.24% at -1.11 V vs RHE. The highest TON was determined to be 14657.0 for CO formation, followed by HCOO- with a TON of 927.8 at -1.11 V vs RHE. In the zero-gap electrolyzer configuration, the most efficient setup toward CO production was identified at a current density (CD) of 75 mA cm-2, a flow rate of 10 mL min-1, operating at 60 °C and utilizing a low KOH concentration of 0.1 M to yield a maximum faradaic efficiency (FECO) of 82.1% during 24 h of stable electrocatalysis.

Abstract
The synthesis and characterization of two cerium complexes of redox-active amine/amido-phenolate-type ligands are reported. A tripodal framework comprising the tris(2-(3',5'-di-tert-butyl-2'-hydroxyphenyl)amino-phenyl) amine (H6Clamp) proligand was synthesized for comparison of its cerium complex with a potassium-cerium heterobimetallic complex of the 4,6-di-tert-butyl-2-[(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)imino]quinone (dippap) proligand. Structural studies indicate differences in the cerium(III) cation coordination spheres, where CeIII(CH3CN)1.5(H3Clamp) (1-Ce(H3Clamp)) exhibits shorter Ce-O distances and longer Ce-N bond distances compared to the analogous distances in K3(THF)3CeIII(dippap)3 (2-Ce(ap)), due to the gross structural differences between the systems. Differences are also evident in the temperature-dependent magnetic properties, where smaller χT products were observed for 2-Ce(ap) compared to 1-Ce(H3Clamp). Solution electrochemical studies for the complexes were interpreted based on ligand- and metal-based oxidation events, and the cerium(III) oxidation of 2-Ce(ap) was observed to be more facile than that of 1-Ce(H3Clamp), behavior that was cautiously attributed to the rigidity of the encrypted 1-Ce(H3Clamp) complex compared to the heterobimetallic framework of 2-Ce(ap). These results contribute to the understanding of how ligand designs can promote facile redox cycling for cerium complexes of redox-active ligands, given the large contraction of cerium-ligand bonds upon oxidation.

Abstract
Electron-rich organocerium complexes (C5Me4H)3Ce and [(C5Me5)2Ce(ortho-oxa)], with redox potentials E1/2 = -0.82 V and E1/2 = -0.86 V versus Fc/Fc+, respectively, were reacted with fullerene (C60) in different stoichiometries to obtain molecular materials. Structurally characterized cocrystals: [(C5Me4H)3Ce]2·C60 (1) and [(C5Me5)2Ce(ortho-oxa)]3·C60 (2) of C60 with cerium-based, molecular rare earth precursors are reported for the first time. The extent of charge transfer in 1 and 2 was evaluated using a series of physical measurements: FT-IR, Raman, solid-state UV-vis-NIR spectroscopy, X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy, and magnetic susceptibility measurements. The physical measurements indicate that 1 and 2 comprise the cerium(III) oxidation state, with formally neutral C60 as a cocrystal in both cases. Pressure-dependent periodic density functional theory calculations were performed to study the electronic structure of 1. Inclusion of a Hubbard-U parameter removes Ce f states from the Fermi level, opens up a band gap, and stabilizes FM/AFM magnetic solutions that are isoenergetic because of the large distances between the Ce(III) cations. The electronic structure of this strongly correlated Mott insulator-type system is reminiscent of the well-studied Ce2O3.

Abstract
The study of the redox chemistry of mid-actinides (U-Pu) has historically relied on cerium as a model, due to the accessibility of trivalent and tetravalent oxidation states for these ions. Recently, dramatic shifts of lanthanide 4+/3+ non-aqueous redox couples have been established within a homoleptic imidophosphorane ligand framework. Herein we extend the chemistry of the imidophosphorane ligand (NPC=[N=Pt Bu(pyrr)2 ]- ; pyrr=pyrrolidinyl) to tetrahomoleptic NPC complexes of neptunium and cerium (1-M, 2-M, M=Np, Ce) and present comparative structural, electrochemical, and theoretical studies of these complexes. Large cathodic shifts in the M4+/3+ (M=Ce, U, Np) couples underpin the stabilization of higher metal oxidation states owing to the strongly donating nature of the NPC ligands, providing access to the U5+/4+ , U6+/5+ , and to an unprecedented, well-behaved Np5+/4+ redox couple. The differences in the chemical redox properties of the U vs. Ce and Np complexes are rationalized based on their redox potentials, degree of structural rearrangement upon reduction/oxidation, relative molecular orbital energies, and orbital composition analyses employing density functional theory.

Abstract
Complexes featuring lanthanide-ligand multiple bonds are rare and highly reactive. They are important synthetic targets to understand 4f/5d-bonding in comparison to d-block and actinide congeners. Herein, the isolation and characterization of a bridging cerium(IV)-nitride complex: [(TriNOx)Ce(Li2μ-N)Ce(TriNOx)][BArF4] is reported, the first example of a molecular cerium-nitride. The compound was isolated by deprotonating a monometallic cerium(IV)-ammonia complex: [CeIV(NH3)(TriNOx)][BArF4]. The average Ce═N bond length of [(TriNOx)Ce(Li2μ-N)Ce(TriNOx)][BArF4] was 2.117(3) Å. Vibrational studies of the 15N-isotopomer exhibited a shift of the Ce═N═Ce asymmetric stretch from ν = 644 cm-1 to 640 cm-1, and X-ray spectroscopic studies confirm the +4 oxidation state of cerium. Computational analyses showed strong involvement of the cerium 4f shell in bonding with overall 16% and 11% cerium weight in the σ- and π-bonds of the Ce═N═Ce fragment, respectively.

Abstract
Persistent radicals have attracted increasing attention owing to their fascinating properties, including multi-step redox and long-wavelength absorption characteristics. In this study, boron complexes with π-extended nitroxide ligands were synthesised via Buchwald-Hartwig amination reactions of the corresponding boron-nitroxide complex and diarylamines. These nitroxide complexes exhibited two-step and reversible one-electron oxidation processes, suggesting stable redox triads involving anionic aminoxide, neutral nitroxide-radical, and cationic oxoammonium ligands. Cationic boron complexes of the nitroxide radical ligands were obtained via chemical oxidation of the aminoxide complexes and structurally characterised. The cationic nitroxide-radical complexes exhibited strong absorptions at approximately 1100 nm, demonstrating their potential as near-infrared (NIR)-II-active functional dyes.

Abstract
X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy, coupled with ab initio calculations, has emerged as the state-of-the-art tool for elucidating the metal-ligand bonding in f-element complexes. This highlight presents recent efforts in calculating XANES spectra of lanthanide and actinide compounds with relativistic multiconfiguration wavefunction approaches that account for differences in donation bonding in the ground state (GS) versus a core-excited state (ES), multiplet effects, and spin-orbit-coupling. With the GS and ES wavefunctions available, including spin-orbit effects, an arsenal of chemical bonding tools that are popular among chemists can be applied to rationalize the observed intensities in terms of covalent bonding.

Abstract
There is significant interest in ligands that can stabilize actinide ions in oxidation states that can be exploited to chemically differentiate 5f and 4f elements. Applications range from developing large-scale actinide separation strategies for nuclear industry processing to carrying out analytical studies that support environmental monitoring and remediation efforts. Here, we report syntheses and characterization of Np(iv), Pu(iv) and Am(iii) complexes with N-tert-butyl-N-(pyridin-2-yl)hydroxylaminato, [2-(tBuNO)py]−(interchangeable hereafter with [(tBuNO)py]−), a ligand which was previously found to impart remarkable stability to cerium in the +4 oxidation state. An[(tBuNO)py]4 (An = Pu, 1; Np, 2) have been synthesized, characterized by X-ray diffraction, X-ray absorption, 1H NMR and UV-vis-NIR spectroscopies, and cyclic voltammetry, along with computational modeling and analysis. In the case of Pu, oxidation of Pu(iii) to Pu(iv) was observed upon complexation with the [(tBuNO)py]− ligand. The Pu complex 1 and Np complex 2 were also isolated directly from Pu(iv) and Np(iv) precursors. Electrochemical measurements indicate that a Pu(iii) species can be accessed upon one-electron reduction of 1 with a large negative reduction potential (E1/2 = −2.26 V vs. Fc+/0). Applying oxidation potentials to 1 and 2 resulted in ligand-centered electron transfer reactions, which is different from the previously reported redox chemistry of UIV[(tBuNO)py]4 that revealed a stable U(v) product. Treatment of an anhydrous Am(iii) precursor with the [(tBuNO)py]− ligand did not result in oxidation to Am(iv). Instead, the dimeric complex [AmIII(μ2-(tBuNO)py)((tBuNO)py)2]2 (3) was isolated. Complex 3 is a rare example of a structurally characterized non-aqueous Am-containing molecular complex prepared using inert atmosphere techniques. Predicted redox potentials from density functional theory calculations show a trivalent accessibility trend of U(iii) < Np(iii) < Pu(iii) and that the higher oxidation states of actinides (i.e., +5 for Np and Pu and +4 for Am) are not stabilized by [2-(tBuNO)py]−, in good agreement with experimental observations. The coordination modes and electronic properties of a strongly coordinating hydroxylaminato ligand with Np, Pu and Am were investigated.Complexes were characterized by a range of experimental and computational techniques.![]()

Abstract
Heterospin systems have a great advantage in frontier orbital engineering since they utilize a wide diversity of paramagnetic chromophores and almost infinite combinations and mutual geometries. Strong exchange couplings are expected in 3d–2p heterospin compounds, where the nitroxide (aminoxyl) oxygen atom has a direct coordination bond with a nickel(II) ion. Complex formation of nickel(II) salts and tert-butyl 2-pyridyl nitroxides afforded a discrete 2p–3d–2p triad. Ferromagnetic coupling is favored when the magnetic orbitals, nickel(II) dσ and radical π*, are arranged in a strictly orthogonal fashion, namely, a planar coordination structure is characterized. In contrast, a severe twist around the coordination bond gives an orbital overlap, resulting in antiferromagnetic coupling. Non-chelatable nitroxide ligands are available for highly twisted and practically diamagnetic complexes. Here, the Ni–O–N–Csp2 torsion (dihedral) angle is supposed to be a useful metric to describe the nickel ion dislocated out of the radical π* nodal plane. Spin-transition complexes exhibited a planar coordination structure in a high-temperature phase and a nonplanar structure in a low-temperature phase. The gradual spin transition is described as a spin equilibrium obeying the van’t Hoff law. Density functional theory calculation indicates that the energy level crossing of the high- and low-spin states. The optimized structures of diamagnetic and high-spin states well agreed with the experimental large and small torsions, respectively. The novel mechanism of the present spin transition lies in the ferro-/antiferromagnetic coupling switch. The entropy-driven mechanism is plausible after combining the results of the related copper(II)-nitroxide compounds. Attention must be paid to the coupling parameter J as a variable of temperature in the magnetic analysis of such spin-transition materials. For future work, the exchange coupling may be tuned by chemical modification and external stimulus, because it has been clarified that the parameter is sensitive to the coordination structure and actually varies from 2J/kB = +400 K to −1400 K.

Abstract
A series of cerium(iv) mixed-ligand guanidinate–amide complexes, {[(Me3Si)2NC(NiPr)2]xCeIV[N(SiMe3)2]3−x}+ (x = 0–3), was prepared by chemical oxidation of the corresponding cerium(iii) complexes, where x = 1 and 2 represent novel complexes. The Ce(iv) complexes exhibited a range of intense colors, including red, black, cyan, and green. Notably, increasing the number of the guanidinate ligands from zero to three resulted in significant redshift of the absorption bands from 503 nm (2.48 eV) to 785 nm (1.58 eV) in THF. X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) spectra indicated increasing f occupancy (nf) with more guanidinate ligands, and revealed the multiconfigurational ground states for all Ce(iv) complexes. Cyclic voltammetry experiments demonstrated less stabilization of the Ce(iv) oxidation state with more guanidinate ligands. Moreover, the Ce(iv) tris(guanidinate) complex exhibited temperature independent paramagnetism (TIP) arising from the small energy gap between the ground- and excited states with considerable magnetic moments. Computational analysis suggested that the origin of the low energy absorption bands was a charge transfer between guanidinate π orbitals that were close in energy to the unoccupied Ce 4f orbitals. However, the incorporation of sterically hindered guanidinate ligands inhibited optimal overlaps between Ce 5d and ligand N 2p orbitals. As a result, there was an overall decrease of ligand-to-metal donation and a less stabilized Ce(iv) oxidation state, while at the same time, more of the donated electron density ended up in the 4f shell. The results indicate that incorporating guanidinate ligands into Ce(iv) complexes gives rise to intense charge transfer bands and noteworthy electronic structures, providing insights into the stabilization of tetravalent lanthanide oxidation states. A series of cerium(iv) mixed-ligand guanidinate-amide complexes, {[(Me3Si)2NC(NiPr)2]xCeIV[N(SiMe3)2]3−x}+ (x = 0−3), was prepared by chemical oxidation and studied spectroscopically and computationally, revealing trends in 4f/5d orbital occupancies.![]()

Abstract
We report the synthesis of a new potassium tris(piperdino)imidophosphorane N,N'-dicyclohexylguanidinate, K[CyGNP(pip)3], and describe the synthesis and characterization of the tris-homoleptic compounds, [Ce(CyGNP(pip)3)3], 1-Ce, and [Ce(CyGNP(pip)3)3][BPh4], 2-Ce. The latter is an unusual cationic tetravalent cerium complex. Cyclic voltammetry studies of 1-Ce and 2-Ce revealed Epc potentials of -1.56 V and -1.81 V, and Epa potentials of -0.78 V and -0.66 V (200 mV s-1; THF, vs. Fc0/+), respectively. Compounds 1-Ce and 2-Ce were studied by L3-edge X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy (XANES), and the fit of the spectrum of 2-Ce revealed a white-line multiplet with an nf value of 0.50(2).

Abstract
A redox pair of Ce4+ and Ce3+ complexes has been prepared that is stabilized by the [(NP(1,2-bis- t Bu-diamidoethane)(NEt2))]1- ligand. Since these complexes are isostructural to the recently reported isovalent terbium analogs, a detailed structural and spectroscopic comparative analysis was pursued via Voronoi-Dirichlet polyhedra analysis, UV-vis-NIR, L3-edge X-ray absorption near edge spectroscopy (XANES), cyclic voltammetry, and natural transitions orbital (NTO) analysis and natural bond orbital (NBO) analysis. The electrochemical studies confirm previous theoretical studies of the redox properties of the related complex [K][Ce3+(NP(pip)3)4] (pip = piperidinyl), 1-Ce(PN). Complex 1-Ce(PN*) presents the most negative E pc of -2.88 V vs. Fc/Fc+ in THF of any cerium complex studied electrochemically. Likewise 1-Tb(PN*) has the most negative E pc for electrochemically interrogated terbium complexes at -1.79 V vs. Fc/Fc+ in THF. Complexes 1-Ce(PN*) and 2-Ce(PN*) were also studied by L3-edge X-ray absorption near edges spectroscopy (XANES) and a comparison to previously reported spectra for 1-Tb(PN*), 2-Tb(PN*), 1-Ce(PN), and, [Ce4+(NP(pip)3)4], 2-Ce(PN), demonstrates similar n f values for all the tetravalent lanthanide complexes. According to the natural bond orbital analysis, a greater covalent character of the M-L bonds is found in 2-Ce(PN*) than in 1-Ce(PN*), in agreement with the shorter Ce-N bonds in the tetravalent counterpart. The greater contribution of Ce orbitals in the Ce-N bonding and, specifically, the higher participation of 4f electrons accounts for the stronger covalent interactions in 2-Ce(PN*) as compared to 2-Tb(PN*).

Abstract
The homoleptic pyrazolate complexes [CeIII 4 (Me2 pz)12 ] and [CeIV (Me2 pz)4 ]2 quantitatively insert CO2 to give [CeIII 4 (Me2 pz⋅CO2 )12 ] and [CeIV (Me2 pz⋅CO2 )4 ], respectively (Me2 pz=3,5-dimethylpyrazolato). This process is reversible for both complexes, as observed by in situ IR and NMR spectroscopy in solution and by TGA in the solid state. By adjusting the molar ratio, one molecule of CO2 per [CeIV (Me2 pz)4 ] complex could be inserted to give trimetallic [Ce3 (Me2 pz)9 (Me2 pz⋅CO2 )3 (thf)]. Both the cerous and ceric insertion products catalyze the formation of cyclic carbonates from epoxides and CO2 under mild conditions. In the absence of epoxide, the ceric catalyst is prone to reduction by the co-catalyst tetra-n-butylammonium bromide (TBAB).

Abstract
Rare examples of molecular, dinuclear CeIII and PrIII complexes with robust Ln-coordination are accessible by use of the tetraphenolate pTP as a supporting, chelating O-donor ligand platform, pTP = [{2-(OC6H2R2-2,4)2CH}-C6H4-1,4]4- that favours the higher formal oxidation states accessible to rare earths. Two classes of complexes have been made from the platforms; one metallacyclic 2 + 2 [Ln2(pTP)2] framework with a rigid, letterbox-shaped geometry and [Ln(aryloxide)4] core, and one more flexible [(LnX)2(pTP)] with one rare earth ion at either end of the platform. The LnIII letterbox complexes have two K+ counter-cations, one of which sits inside the letterbox, binding the two central arenes of the platform sufficiently strongly that it cannot be displaced by solvent molecules (THF and pyridine) or crown ethers. Oxidation of the CeIII lettterboxes is facile and forms the unusual neutral molecular (CeIV)2 letterbox in which the CeIV reduction potential is -1.83 V vs. Fc/Fc+. The electronic structure of the Ce(iii/iv) complexes was investigated using HERFD-XAS (high energy resolution fluorescence detection X-ray absorption spectroscopy).

Abstract
A series of f-block tungstates show atypical coloration for both the Ce(iii) and Pu(iii) compounds; whereas the other lanthanide and Am(iii) compounds possess normal absorption features. The different optical properties are actually derived from the tungstate component rather than from 5f electrons/orbitals.
A series of trivalent f-block tungstates, MW2O7(OH)(H2O) (M = La, Ce, Pr, Nd, and Pu) and AmWO4(OH), have been prepared in crystalline form using hydrothermal methods. Both structure types take the form of 3D networks where MW2O7(OH)(H2O) is assembled from infinite chains of distorted tungstate octahedra linked by isolated MO8 bicapped trigonal prisms; whereas AmWO4(OH) is constructed from edge-sharing AmO8 square antiprisms connected by distorted tungstate trigonal bipyramids. PuW2O7(OH)(H2O) crystallizes as red plates; an atypical color for a Pu(iii) compound. Optical absorption spectra acquired from single crystals show strong, broadband absorption in the visible region. A similar feature is observed for CeW2O7(OH)(H2O), but not for AmWO4(OH). Here we demonstrate that these significantly different optical properties do not stem directly from the 5f electrons, as in both systems the valence band has mostly O-2p character and the conduction band has mostly W-5d character. Furthermore, the quasi-particle gap is essentially unaffected by the 5f degrees of freedom. Despite this, our analysis demonstrates that the f-electron covalency effects are quite important and substantially different energetically in PuW2O7(OH)(H2O) and AmWO4(OH), indicating that the optical gap alone cannot be used to infer conclusions concerning the f electron contribution to the chemical bond in these systems.

Abstract
Single electron oxidation of 2,3-diaminocyclopropenones is shown to give rise to stable diaminocyclopropenium oxyl (DACO) radical cations. Cyclic voltammetry reveals reversible oxidations in the range of +0.70-1.10 V (vs. SCE). Computational, EPR, and X-ray analysis support the view that the oxidized species is best described as a cyclopropenium ion with spin density located on the heteroatom substituents, including 23.5 % on oxygen. The metal-ligand behavior of the DACO radical is also described.

Abstract
An azine-based molybdenum (Mo(VI)) complex (M1) is exploited for selective detection of thorium (Th(IV)) ions through a metal-ion displacement protocol. Th(IV) displaces Mo(VI) from M1 instantly leading to the formation of the Th(IV) complex, having orange-red emission. Consequently, a red shift of the emission wavelength along with 41-fold fluorescence enhancement is observed. This unique method allows detection of Th(IV) as low as 1.5 × 10-9 M. The displacement of Mo(VI) from M1 by Th(IV) is established by spectroscopic studies and kinetically followed by the stopped-flow technique. The displacement binding constant for Th(IV) is notably strong, 4.59 × 106 M-1. Extraction of Th(IV) from aqueous solution to the ethyl acetate medium using M1 has been achieved. The silica-immobilized M1 efficiently enriches Th(IV) from its reservoir through solid-phase extraction. Computational studies (density functional theory) support experimental findings.

Abstract
A new synthesis of cerium tetrakis(tropolonate), Ce(trop)4, where trop is deprotonated 2-hydroxy-2,4,6-cycloheptatrienone) or Ce(O2C7H5)4, is developed that results in dark-purple crystals whose X-ray crystal structure shows that the geometry of the eight-coordinate compound closely resembles a D2 d dodecahedron, based on shape parameters. The magnetic susceptibility as a function of the temperature (4-300 K) shows that it is a temperature-independent paramagnet, χ = 1.2(3) × 10-4 emu/mol, and the LIII-edge X-ray absorption near-edge structure spectrum shows that the molecule is multiconfigurational, comprised of a f1:f0 configuration mixture in a 50:50 ratio. Ce(acac)4 and Ce(tmtaa)2 (where acac is acetylacetonate and tmtaaH2 is tetramethyldibenzotetraaza[14]annulene) have similar physical properties, as does the solid-state compound CeO2. The concept is advanced that trop-, acac-, tmtaa2-, cot2-, and O2- are redox-active ligands that function as electron donors, rendering the classification of these compounds according to their oxidation numbers misleading because their magnetic susceptibilities, χ, are positive and their effective magnetic moments, μeff, lie in the range of 0.1-0.7 μB at 300 K.

Abstract
Organometallic multi-decker sandwich complexes containing f-elements remain rare, despite their attractive magnetic and electronic properties. The reduction of the CeIII siloxide complex, [KCeL4 ] (1; L=OSi(OtBu)3 ), with excess potassium in a THF/toluene mixture afforded a quadruple-decker arene-bridged complex, [K(2.2.2-crypt)]2 [{(KL3 Ce)(μ-η6 :η6 -C7 H8 )}2 Ce] (3). The structure of 3 features a [Ce(C7 H8 )2 ] sandwich capped by [KL3 Ce] moieties with a linear arrangement of the Ce ions. Structural parameters, UV/Vis/NIR data, and DFT studies indicate the presence of CeII ions involved in δ bonding between the Ce cations and toluene dianions. Complex 3 is a rare lanthanide multi-decker complex and the first containing non-classical divalent lanthanide ions. Moreover, oxidation of 1 by AgOTf (OTf=O3 SCF3 ) yielded the CeIV complex, [CeL4 ] (2), showing that siloxide ligands can stabilize Ce in three oxidation states.

Abstract
A family of neodymium complexes featuring a redox-active ligand in three different oxidation states has been synthesized, including the iminoquinone (L0 ) derivative, (dipp iq)2 NdI3 (1-iq), the iminosemiquinone (L1- ) compound, (dipp isq)2 NdI(THF) (1-isq), and the amidophenolate (L2- ) [K(THF)2 ][(dipp ap)2 Nd(THF)2 ] (1-ap) and [K(18-crown-6)][(dipp ap)2 Nd(THF)2 ] (1-ap crown) species. Full spectroscopic and structural characterization of each derivative established the +3 neodymium oxidation state with redox chemistry occurring at the ligand rather than the neodymium center. Oxidation with elemental chalcogens showed the reversible nature of the ligand-mediated reduction process, forming the iminosemiquinone metallocycles, [K(18-crown-6)][(dipp isq)2 Nd(S5 )] (2-isq crown) and [K(18-crown-6)(THF)][(dipp isq)2 Nd(Se5 )] (3-isq crown), which are characterized to contain a 6-membered twist-boat ring.

Abstract
A series of heteroleptic tris(cyclopentadienyl) CeIV complexes has been isolated and crystallographically characterized, revealing the broad accessibility of such organocerium(IV) compounds. The oxidation of complexes CpMe3 Ce(thf) and Cp'3 Ce(thf) (CpMe =C5 H4 Me, Cp'=C5 H4 SiMe3 ), bearing monosubstituted electron-poor cyclopentadienyl ligands, with 0.5 equivalents of 1,4-benzoquinone or C2 Cl6 gave the cerium(IV) hydroquinolate complexes CpMe3 Ce(OC6 H4 O)CeCpMe3 and Cp'3 Ce(OC6 H4 O)CeCp'3 , or the chloride complexes CpMe3 CeCl and Cp'3 CeCl, respectively; the iodide complex Cp'3 CeI was obtained from the reaction of Cp'3 Ce(thf) with elemental iodine. The behavior of Cp'3 CeCl in salt metathesis protocols employing alkali metal amides or alkyl, alkoxide, and aryloxide reagents was investigated, which gave rise to the robust and isolable cerium(IV) alkoxide Cp'3 Ce(OtBu). Trivalent [Cp'2 CeCl]2 was synthesized by AlMe4 →Cl exchange utilizing Cp'2 Ce(AlMe4 ) and AlMe2 Cl. The reactivity of [Cp'2 CeCl]2 towards the oxidants Ph3 CCl, C2 Cl6 , 1,4-benzoquinone, and I2 has been assessed, and has provided useful information on CeIII /CeIV redox deactivation pathways. In addition to X-ray structure analysis, all the complexes were characterized by NMR, DRIFT (diffuse reflectance IR Fourier transform), and UV/Vis spectroscopy as well as elemental analysis. The tetravalent compounds were further analyzed for their magnetic susceptibility by using Evans' method.

Abstract
A series of alkali metal capped cerium(IV) imido complexes, [M(solv)x][Ce═N(3,5-(CF3)2C6H3)(TriNOx)] (M = Li, K, Rb, Cs; solv = TMEDA, THF, Et2O, or DME), was isolated and fully characterized. An X-ray structural investigation of the cerium imido complexes demonstrated the impact of the alkali metal counterions on the geometry of the [Ce═N(3,5-(CF3)2C6H3)(TriNOx)]- moiety. Substantial shortening of the Ce═N bond was observed with increasing size of the alkali metal cation. The first complex featuring an unsupported, terminal multiple bond between a Ce(IV) ion and a ligand fragment was also isolated by encapsulation of a Cs+ counterion with 2.2.2-cryptand. This complex shows the shortest recorded Ce═N bond length of 2.077(3) Å. Computational investigation of the cerium imido complexes using DFT methods showed a relatively larger contribution of the cerium 5d orbital than the 4f orbital to the Ce═N bonds. The [K(DME)2][Ce═N(3,5-(CF3)2C6H3)(TriNOx)] complex cleaves the Si-O bond in (Me3Si)2O, yielding the [(Me3SiO)CeIV(TriNOx)] adduct. The reaction of the rubidium capped imido complex with benzophenone resulted in the formation of a rare Ce(IV)-oxo complex, that was stabilized by a supramolecular, tetrameric oligomerization of the Ce═O units with rubidium cations.

The inverse-trans-influence in tetravalent lanthanide and actinide bis(carbene) complexes. Nat Commun 2017; 8:14137. Abstract
Across the periodic table the trans-influence operates, whereby tightly bonded ligands selectively lengthen mutually trans metal-ligand bonds. Conversely, in high oxidation state actinide complexes the inverse-trans-influence operates, where normally cis strongly donating ligands instead reside trans and actually reinforce each other. However, because the inverse-trans-influence is restricted to high-valent actinyls and a few uranium(V/VI) complexes, it has had limited scope in an area with few unifying rules. Here we report tetravalent cerium, uranium and thorium bis(carbene) complexes with trans C=M=C cores where experimental and theoretical data suggest the presence of an inverse-trans-influence. Studies of hypothetical praseodymium(IV) and terbium(IV) analogues suggest the inverse-trans-influence may extend to these ions but it also diminishes significantly as the 4f orbitals are populated. This work suggests that the inverse-trans-influence may occur beyond high oxidation state 5f metals and hence could encompass mid-range oxidation state actinides and lanthanides. Thus, the inverse-trans-influence might be a more general f-block principle.
