Molecular Nanoscale Magnetic Refrigerants: A Ferrimagnetic {CuII15GdIII7} Cagelike Cluster from the Use of Pyridine-2,6-dimethanol

Cu(II)-Ln(III) (Ln = Gd, Tb and Dy) complexes of an unsymmetrical N2O3 donor ligand: field induced SMM behaviour of Cu(II)-Tb(III) complexes

Three new hetero-metallic CuII-LnIII complexes [(CuL)Gd(NO3)3(CH3OH)]n (1), [(CuL)Tb(NO3)3(H2O)]·[CuL] (2) and [(CuL)Dy(NO3)3(H2O)]·[CuL] (3) have been synthesized using a mono-nuclear Cu(II) complex, [CuL], of an unsymmetrically di-condensed N2O3 donor Schiff base ligand, N-(3-methoxysalicylidene)-N-(salicylidene)-1,2-ethylenediamine (H2L). Single crystal X-ray crystallography revealed that complex 1 is a nitrate bridged 1D chain of dinuclear Cu(II)-Gd(III) units whereas in 2 and 3, the dinuclear Cu(II)-Ln(III) units are co-crystallized with a [CuL] unit. The Ln(III) centers are nine coordinated with the geometry of a spherical capped square antiprism for Gd and spherical tricapped trigonal prism for Tb and Dy. The geometry of the Cu(II) center is distorted octahedral for complex 1 and distorted square planar for complexes 2 and 3. Temperature-dependent molar magnetic susceptibility measurements in 1-3 revealed the presence of overall ferromagnetic coupling between the Cu(II) and Ln(III) centers. Notably, field induced single-molecule magnet behavior was witnessed in the Tb(III) derivative (2). The ab initio calculations indicated that upon application of an external magnetic field, the tunneling in the ground state of complex 2 gets reduced and thereby field-induced SMM behaviour is observed. Besides, in the case of complex 1, BS-DFT calculations were carried out to gain further insights into the magnetic exchange coupling interactions between the Cu(II) and Gd(III) centers.

Self-Assembly Bifunctional Tetranuclear Ln2Ni2 Clusters: Magnetic Behaviors and Highly Efficient Conversion of CO2 under Mild Conditions

A series of heterometallic tetranuclear clusters, Ln₂Ni₂(NO₃)₄L₄(μ₃-OCH₃)₂·2(CH₃CN) (Ln = Gd(1), Tb(2), Dy(3), Ho(4), Er(5); HL = methyl 3-methoxysalicylate), were synthesized solvothermally. The intramolecular synergistic effect of two metal centers of Ln(III) and Ni(II) and the exposed multimetallic sites serving as Lewis acid activators greatly increase the efficiency of the CO₂ conversion, and the yield for cluster 3 can be achieved at 96% at atmospheric pressure and low temperature. In particular, the self-assembly multimetal center with polydentate ligand shows good generality and enhanced recyclability. The design of such 3d-4f heterometallic clusters provides an effective strategy for the conversion of CO₂ under greener conditions. Meanwhile, magnetic investigations indicate that cluster 1 is a good candidate for magnetic refrigerant materials with a relatively large magnetocaloric effect (MCE) (-ΔS_m = 28.5 J kg^-1 K^-1 at 3.0 K and 7.0 T), and cluster 3 shows single-molecular magnet behavior under zero dc field. Heterometallic clusters with special magnetic properties and good catalytic behavior for the conversion of CO₂ are rare. Thus, they are potential bifunctional materials applied in practice.

Further synthetic investigation of the general lanthanoid(iii) [Ln(iii)]/copper(ii)/pyridine-2,6-dimethanol/carboxylate reaction system: {CuLn} coordination clusters (Ln = Dy, Tb, Ho) and their yttrium(iii) analogue

In addition to previously studied {CuGd₆}, {CuGd₄}, {CuLn₇} and {CuLn₈} coordination clusters (Ln = trivalent lanthanide) containing pdm^2- or Hpdm^- ligands (H₂pdm = pyridine-2,6-dimethanol) and ancillary carboxylate groups (RCO₂^-), the present work reports the synthesis and study of three new members of a fifth family of such complexes. Compounds [Cu₅Ln₄O₂(OMe)₄(NO₃)₄(O₂CCH₂Bu^t)₂(pdm)₄(MeOH)₂] (Ln = Dy, 1; Ln = Tb, 2; Ln = Ho, 3) were prepared from the reaction of Ln(NO₃)₃·xH₂O (x = 5, 6), CuX₂·yH₂O (X = ClO₄, Cl, NO₃; y = 6, 2 and 3, respectively), H₂pdm, Bu^tCH₂CO₂H and Et₃N (2 : 2.5 : 2 : 1 : 9) in MeCN/MeOH. Rather surprisingly, the copper(ii)/yttrium(iii) analogue has a slightly different composition, i.e. [Cu₅Y₄O₂(OMe)₄(NO₃)₂(O₂CCH₂Bu^t)₄(pdm)₄(MeOH)₂] (4). The structures of 1·4MeCN·1.5MeOH and 4·2MeOH were solved by single-crystal X-ray crystallography. The five Cu^II and four Dy^III centres in 1 are held together by two μ₅-O^2-, four μ-MeO^-, two syn,synη¹:η¹:μ Bu^tCH₂CO₂^-, four η²:η¹:η²:μ₃ pdm^2- (each of these groups chelates a Cu^II atom and simultaneously bridges two Dy^III atoms through its two -CH₂O^- arms) and two μ-MeOH ligands. The four terminal nitrato groups each chelate (η¹:η¹) a Dy^III centre. The five Cu^II atoms are co-planar (by symmetry) forming a bow-tie arrangement; the four outer Cu^II atoms form a rectangle with edges of 3.061(1) and 6.076(1) Å. The four Dy^III centres also form a rectangle that lies above and below the plane of the Cu^II centres, with edges of 3.739(1) and 5.328(1) Å. The two strictly planar rectangles are almost perpendicular. Two trigonal bipyramidal μ₅-O^2- groups link the perpendicular Cu₅ and Dy₄ frameworks together. The molecule 4 has a very similar structure to that of 1, differences being the replacement of the two chelating nitrato groups of 1 by two chelating Bu^tCH₂CO₂^- ligands in 4 and the coordination polyhedra of the Ln^III and Y^III atoms (Snub diphenoids in 1 and biaugmented trigonal prisms in 4). Dc magnetic susceptibility data (χ_M) on analytically pure samples of 1-3, collected in the 300-2 K range, indicate that ferromagnetic exchange interactions dominate leading to large spin ground states. The χ_MT vs. T data for 4 suggest moderately strong antiferromagnetic Cu^IICu^II exchange interactions. Studies of the dynamic magnetic properties of the {Cu₅Ln₄} clusters show that 1 behaves as a SMM at zero field and 2 is a very weak field-induced SMM, while 3 exhibits only weak tails in the χ''_Mvs. T plots at various ac frequencies at zero dc field.

A series of CuII–LnIII complexes of an N2O3 donor asymmetric ligand and a possible CuII–TbIII SMM candidate in no bias field

Among four isostructural heterometallic Cu^II–Ln^III complexes (Ln = Tb, Dy, Ho or Er) of an N₂O₃ donor asymmetric ligand, only the Cu^II–Tb^III complex shows SMM behavior at zero bias field but at applied bias field both the Cu^II–Tb^III and Cu^II–Dy^III complexes show SMM behavior.

Oximato-Based Ligands in 3 d/4 f-Metal Cluster Chemistry: A Family of {Cu3Ln} Complexes with a "Propeller"-like Topology and Single-Molecule Magnetic Behavior

The organic chelating and bridging ligands 9,10-phenanthrenedione-9-oxime (phenoxH) and 9,10-phenanthrenedione-9,10-dioxime (phendoxH₂) were synthesized and subsequently employed for the first time in heterometallic 3 d/4 f-metal cluster chemistry. The general reaction between CuCl₂·2H₂O, LnCl₃·6H₂O, phenoxH, and NEt₃ in a 1:2:2:4 molar ratio, in a solvent mixture comprising MeCN and MeOH, afforded brown crystals of a new family of [Cu₃LnCl₃(phenox)₆(MeOH)₃] clusters (Ln = Gd (1), Tb (2), Dy (3)) that possess an unprecedented [Cu₃Ln(μ-NO)₆]³⁺ "propeller"-like core. Complexes 1-3 are the first {Cu₃Ln} clusters in which the outer Cu^II and the central Ln^III atoms are solely bridged by diatomic oximato bridges. The {Cu-N-O-Ln} bridging units are very distorted with torsion angles spanning the range 35.5-48.9° and 25.2-55.6° in 1 and 2, respectively. As a result, complexes 1-3 are antiferromagnetically coupled, in agreement with previously reported magnetostructural criteria for oximato-bridged Cu/Ln complexes. The magnetic susceptibility data for all complexes were nicely fit to an isotropic spin Hamiltonian (for 1) or a Hamiltonian that accounts for the spin of the Cu^II atoms, the spin component of the Ln^III, the spin-orbit coupling (λ), an axial ligand-field component around the Ln^III atoms (Δ), and the Zeeman effect (for the anisotropic 2 and 3). The resulting fit parameters were J = -1.34 cm^-1 and g = 2.10 (1), J = -1.42 cm^-1, g_Cu = 2.10, and Δ = -26.3 cm^-1 (2), and J = -1.70 cm^-1, g_Cu = 2.05, and Δ = -38.1 cm^-1 (3). The reported fitting procedure, implemented in the PHI program, is here used for the first time. Even if this method is only valid in high-symmetry Ln environments, when it is properly used allows a very simple and efficient method to obtain the exchange parameters. In light of the negative anisotropy, compounds 2 and 3 were found to exhibit frequency-dependent tails of out-of-phase signals in the presence of a small external dc field, characteristic of the slow magnetization relaxation of a single-molecule magnet. By using the Kramers-Kronig equations, the effective energy barriers ( U_eff) were derived and reported as U_eff = 10.1 and 5.4 cm^-1 for 2 and 3, respectively.

Three microporous metal-organic frameworks assembled from dodecanuclear {NiLn} subunits: synthesis, structure, gas adsorption and magnetism

Three isostructural heterometallic metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) {[Ln₂Ni(OAc)₅(HL)(L)]·solvent molecules}_n (H₂L = 2-hydroxyimino-N-[1-(2-pyrazinyl)ethylidene]-propanohydrazone, Ln = Dy for 1, Tb for 2 and Gd for 3) were solvothermally synthesized by varying rare-earth metal ions with different electron configurations. Their crystal structures, gas adsorption and magnetic behaviors were fully investigated. The three isomorphous MOFs exhibit three-dimensional microporous frameworks with two different orientated dodecane metallic {Ni^IILn^III(HL)}₆ metallomacrocycles alternately connected by {Ln^III(L)} connectors, in which an empty one-dimensional channel decorated by the basic hydrazone interior is generated. Due to their Ln^III-independent microporous nature, the activated sample of 1 as a representative example has a significant CO₂ uptake up to 42.2 cm³ g^-1 and an unusually high CO₂/N₂ and CO₂/CH₄ adsorption selectivity of up to 98.8 and 16.8 at 298 K and 100 kPa. Magnetically, apparent antiferromagnetic interactions for both 1 and 2 as well as ferromagnetic coupling for 3 are respectively observed at low temperature resulting from the competition of magnetic anisotropy and intermetallic ferromagnetic superexchange. Additionally, 1 with highly anisotropic Dy^III spin shows slow magnetization relaxation under zero dc field, whereas 3 possessing isotropic Gd^III ions displays a significant cryogenic magnetocaloric effect with a maximum entropy change of 26.6 J kg^-1 K^-1 at 3.0 K and 70 kOe. These interesting results can provide valuable information on gas separation-based multifunctional 3d-4f MOF materials.

"Switching on" the single-molecule magnet properties within a series of dinuclear cobalt(iii)-dysprosium(iii) 2-pyridyloximate complexes

The use of 2-pyridinealdoxime (paoH), methyl 2-pyridyl ketone oxime (mepaoH), phenyl 2-pyridyl ketone oxime (phpaoH) and pyridine-2-amidoxime (NH₂paoH) for the synthesis of dinuclear Co^III/Dy^III complexes is described in the absence or presence of an external base. Complexes [CoDy(pao)₃(NO₃)₃] (1), [CoDy(mepao)₃(NO₃)₃] (2), [CoDy(phpao)₃(NO₃)₃] (3) and [CoDy(NH₂pao)₃(NO₃)₃]·3MeOH (4·3MeOH) have been isolated and their structures have been determined by single-crystal X-ray crystallography. The complexes crystallize in non-centrosymmetric (2, 3) or centrosymmetric (1, 4·3MeOH) trigonal space groups and form a family of triply-oximate bridged dinuclear Co(iii)-Dy(iii) complexes. The crystals of 1, 3 and 4·3MeOH contain mixtures of Δ and Λ enantiomers, whereas complex 2 is enantiomerically pure (Λ). A 3-fold crystallographic axis (C₃) passes through two metal ions in all complexes. The low-spin Co^III and Dy^III ions are bridged by three oximate groups belonging to the η¹:η¹:η¹:μ 2-pyridyloximate ligands. The Co^III centre is octahedrally coordinated by the six nitrogen atoms of the deprotonated organic ligands in a facial arrangement. The Dy^III centre is bound to an O₉ set of donor atoms, its coordination sphere being completed by three bidentate chelating nitrato groups. The coordination polyhedron around Dy^III in 1 is best described as the Johnson tricapped trigonal prism, while the coordination geometries of the Dy^III centres in 2, 3 and 4·3MeOH are best described as consisting of spherical tricapped trigonal prismatic coordination polyhedra. The spectroscopic data of the complexes are also reported and discussed in the infra-red region in terms of the coordination modes of the ligands involved. The magnetic properties of these complexes were studied between 300 and 1.8 K revealing mainly the depopulation of the Dy^IIIm_j sublevels of the ground ⁶H_15/2 state. The intrinsic magnetic anisotropy of the Dy^III centers is clearly observed by the non-superimposed magnetization (M) versus H/T data, but single-molecule magnet (SMM) properties were detected only for the mepao^--containing complex 2. The origin of these properties in 2 is critically discussed and supported by computational studies.

Heterometallic Cu/Ln cluster chemistry: ferromagnetically-coupled {Cu4Ln2} complexes exhibiting single-molecule magnetism and magnetocaloric properties

Two Series of Homodinuclear Lanthanide Complexes: Greatly Enhancing Energy Barriers through Tuning Terminal Solvent Ligands in Dy2 Single-Molecule Magnets

The utilization of 2-ethoxy-6-{[(2-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzyl)imino]methyl}phenol (H₂ L) as a chelating ligand, in combination with the employment of alcohols (EtOH and MeOH) as auxiliary ligands, in 4 f-metal chemistry afforded two series of dinuclear lanthanide complexes of compositions [Ln₂ L₂ (NO₃ )₂ (EtOH)₂ ] (Ln=Sm (1), Eu (2), Gd (3), Tb (4), Dy (5), Ho (6), Er (7)) and [Ln₂ L₂ (NO₃ )₂ (MeOH)₂ ] (Ln=Sm (8), Eu (9), Gd (10), Tb (11), Dy (12), Ho (13), Er (14)). The structures of 1-14 were determined by single-crystal X-ray crystallography. Complexes 1-7 are isomorphous. The two lanthanide(III) ions in 1-7 are doubly bridged by two deprotonated aminophenoxide oxygen atoms of two μ₂ :η⁰ :η¹ :η² :η¹ :η¹ :η⁰ -L^2- ligands. One nitrogen atom, two oxygen atoms of the NO₃^- anion, two methoxide oxygen atoms of two ligand sets, and one oxygen atom of the terminally coordinated EtOH molecule complete the distorted dodecahedron geometry of each lanthanide(III) ion. Compounds 8-14 are isomorphous and their structures are similar to those of 1-7. The slight difference between 1-7 and 8-14 stems from purposefully replacing the EtOH ligands in 1-7 with MeOH in 8-14. Direct-current magnetic susceptibility studies in the 2-300 K range reveal weak antiferromagnetic interactions for 3, 4, 7, 10, 11, and 14, and ferromagnetic interactions at low temperature for 5, 6, 12, and 13. Complexes 5 and 12 exhibit single-molecule magnet (SMM) behavior with energy barriers of 131.3 K for 5 and 198.8 K for 12. The energy barrier is significantly enhanced by dexterously regulating the terminal ligands. To rationalize the observed difference in the magnetic behavior, complete-active-space self-consistent field (CASSCF) calculations were performed on two Dy₂ complexes. Subtle variation in the angle between the magnetic axes and the vector connecting two dysprosium(III) ions results in a weaker influence on the tunneling gap of individual dysprosium(III) ions by the dipolar field in 12. This work proposes an efficient strategy for synthesizing Dy₂ SMMs with high energy barriers.

A family of ‘windmill’-like {Cu6Ln12} complexes exhibiting single-molecule magnetism behavior and large magnetic entropy changes

Coordination-Cluster-Based Molecular Magnetic Refrigerants

Coordination polymers serving as molecular magnetic refrigerants have been attracting great interest. In particular, coordination cluster compounds that demonstrate their apparent advantages on cryogenic magnetic refrigerants have attracted more attention in the last five years. Herein, we mainly focus on depicting aspects of syntheses, structures, and magnetothermal properties of coordination clusters that serve as magnetic refrigerants on account of the magnetocaloric effect. The documented molecular magnetic refrigerants are classified into two primary categories according to the types of metal centers, namely, homo- and heterometallic clusters. Every section is further divided into several subgroups based on the metal nuclearity and their dimensionalities, including discrete molecular clusters and those with extended structures constructed from molecular clusters. The objective is to present a rough overview of recent progress in coordination-cluster-based molecular magnetic refrigerants and provide a tutorial for researchers who are interested in the field.

Nitronyl nitroxide based 2p-3d-4f chains with the magnetocaloric effect and slow magnetic relaxation

Four new nitronyl nitroxide radical based hetero-tri-spin one-dimensional compounds, namely [{Ln(hfac)3}3{Cu(hfac)2}{NIT-Ph(OMe)2}4]n (Ln = Gd (1), Tb (2), Dy (3), Er (4); hfac = hexafluoroacetylacetonate; NIT-Ph(OMe)2 = 2-(2',4'-dimethoxyphenyl)-4,4,5,5-tetramethyl-imidazolyl-1-oxyl-3-oxide) have been successfully prepared. Single crystal X-ray crystallographic analysis reveals that complexes 1-4 possess a 1D chain structure with a repeating [Cu-Rad-Ln-Rad-Ln-Rad-Ln-Rad] moiety in which Ln(hfac)3 and Cu(hfac)2 units are bridged by nitronyl nitroxide radicals through the NO groups. DC magnetic studies found that ferromagnetic interactions between metals and the coordinated NO groups are active in all four compounds. The Tb derivative displays frequency dependent ac magnetic susceptibilities, indicating slow magnetic relaxation behavior. The Gd complex shows an important cryogenic magnetocaloric effect with the entropy change (-ΔSm) of 13.5 J kg(-1) K(-1) at 2 K and a magnetic field of 7 T, representing the first example of Gd-radical molecular species exhibiting the magnetocaloric effect.
