NMR Investigations of Dinuclear, Single-Anion Bridged Copper(II) Metallacycles: Structure and Antiferromagnetic Behavior in Solution

Coordination of ε-Caprolactone to a Cationic Niobium(V) Alkoxide Complex: Fundamental Insight into Ring-Opening Polymerization via Coordination-Insertion

We report three niobium-based initiators for the catalytic ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of ε-caprolactone, exhibiting good activity and molecular weight control. In particular, we have prepared on the gram-scale and fully characterized a monometallic cationic alkoxo-Nb(V) ε-caprolactone adduct representing, to the best of our knowledge, an unprecedented example of a metal complex with an intact lactone monomer and a functional ROP-initiating group simultaneously coordinated at the metal center. At 80 °C, all three systems initiate the immortal solution-state ROP of ε-caprolactone via a coordination-insertion mechanism, which has been confirmed through experimental studies, and is supported by computational data. Natural bond orbital calculations further indicate that polymerization may necessitate isomerization about the metal center between the alkoxide chain and the coordinated monomer. The observations made in this work are expected to inform mechanistic understanding both of amine tris(phenolate)-supported metal alkoxide ROP initiators, including various highly stereoselective systems for the polymerization of lactides and of coordination-insertion-type ROP protocols more broadly.

A Copper(I) Complex with Two Unpaired Electrons, Synthesised by Oxidation of a Copper(II) Complex with Two Redox-Active Ligands

Two homoleptic copper(II) complexes [Cu(L1)2 ] and [Cu(L2)2 ] with anionic redox-active ligands were synthesised, one with urea azine (L1) and the other with thio-urea azine (L2) ligands. One-electron oxidation of the complexes initiates an unprecedented redox-induced electron transfer process, leading to monocationic copper(I) complexes [Cu(L1)2 ]+ and [Cu(L2)2 ]+ with two oxidised ligands. While [Cu(L1)2 ]+ is best described as a CuI complex with two neutral radical ligands that couple antiferromagnetically, [Cu(L2)2 ]+ is a CuI complex with two clearly different ligand units in the solid state and with a magnetic susceptibility close to a diamagnetic compound. Further one-electron oxidation of the complex with L1 ligands results in a dication [Cu(L1)2 ]2+ , best described as a CuI complex with a twofold oxidised, monocationic ligand and a neutral radical ligand. The stability in at least three redox states, the accumulation of spin density at the ligands and the facile ligand-metal electron transfer make these complexes highly attractive for a variety of applications; here the catalytic aerobic oxidation of alcohols to aldehydes is tested.

Switching from Metal- to Ligand-Based Oxidation in Cobalt Complexes with Redox-Active Bisguanidine Ligands

The control of the redox reactivity, magnetic and optical properties of the different redox states of complexes with redox‐active ligands permits their rational use in catalysis and materials science. The redox‐chemistry of octahedrally coordinated high‐spin Co^II complexes (three unpaired electrons) with one redox‐active bisguanidine ligand and two acetylacetonato (acac) co‐ligands is completely changed by replacing the acac by hexafluoro‐acetylacetonato (hfacac) co‐ligands. The first one‐electron oxidation is metal‐centered in the case of the complexes with acac co‐ligands, giving diamagnetic Co^III complexes. By contrast, in the case of the less Lewis‐basic hfacac co‐ligands, the first one‐electron oxidation becomes ligand‐centered, leading to high‐spin Co^II complexes with a radical monocationic guanidine ligand unit (four unpaired electrons). Ferromagnetic coupling between the spins on the metal and the organic radical in solution is evidenced by temperature‐dependent paramagnetic NMR studies, allowing to estimate the isotropic exchange coupling constant in solution. Second one‐electron oxidation leads to high‐spin Co^II complexes with dicationic guanidine ligand units (three unpaired electrons) in the presence of hfacac co‐ligands, but to low‐spin Co^III complexes with radical monocationic, peralkylated guanidine ligand (one unpaired electron) in the presence of acac co‐ligands. The analysis of the electronic structures is complemented by quantum‐chemical calculations on the spin density distributions and relative energies of the possible redox isomers.

Formation of a four-bladed waterwheel-type chloro-bridged dicopper(ii) complex with dithiamacrocycle via double exo-coordination

A four-bladed waterwheel-like chloro-bridged dicopper(ii) complex! The self-assembly of O₃S₂-macrocycle (L) with copper(ii) nitrate afforded a chloro-bridged tetra(macrocycle) dicopper(ii) complex.

Synthesis of novel polycarbonyl Schiff bases by ring-opening reaction of ethyl 5-acyl-4-pyrone-2-carboxylates with primary mono- and diamines

An approach for the introduction of the tricarbonyl moiety into aromatic, heterocyclic, and aliphatic amines with the use of acylpyrones has been developed for the synthesis and the design of novel polycarbonyl Schiff base ligands, including salphen structures. This Michael addition-ring-opening reaction proceeds under mild conditions (stirring at 0-20 °C) via the attack at the C-6 position of the pyrone ring in good to high yields (up to 99%) with excellent selectivity. The products can be easily isolated by crystallization without the use of chromatography. The scope of the reaction, tautomeric equilibrium of open-chain products, and their cyclization into pyridone structures were investigated.

Magnetic resonance studies of copper (II) sorbitol complex, in solution, reveal a supramolecular structure compatible to the crystal structure

Although the Cu²⁺ -sorbitol complex [Cu²⁺ -Sorb] structure in crystalline state has been determined by X rays, it is not known in solution, where most studies of this complex are performed. Therefore, the goal of this work was to obtain information about the structure of this complex in aqueous solution using nuclear magnetic resonance and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopies. The magnetic resonance results indicate that the complex is formed at approximately pH 12. In this pH the sorbitol ¹ H relaxation times were so short (broad line) that was not possible to use standard nuclear magnetic resonance parameters (nuclear Overhauser effect and spin-spin coupling constants values) to solve the three-dimensional structure. However, valuable structural information about the complex in solution was obtained. The relaxation results indicate that the Cu²⁺ ions are buried in the structure and not accessible to solvent; the ¹ H and ¹³ C spectra shows strong paramagnetic shift effect indicating short distance between these nuclei and Cu²⁺ in the structure. No electron paramagnetic resonance signal was observed in pH 12 indicating strong Cu²⁺ - Cu²⁺ dipolar interaction, compatible to Cu²⁺ -Cu²⁺ distances measured in crystal, from 1.148 to 1.393 Angstroms. The complex self-diffusion coefficient (D) of 1.58 × 10^-10  m² /s value, determined by Diffusion-Ordered Spectroscopy, is compatible to a molecular weight of 3-6 KDa. Therefore, these results corroborate that the [Cu²⁺ -Sorb] complex is assembled in solution, at pH 12, with several structural parameters compatible to the toroidal hexadecacuprate supramolecular structure determined in solid state.
