Abstract
The combination of π-conjugated groups [NO3] and Cl-centered polyhedra generates a new birefringent crystal with a perovskite-related framework, KRb2(NO3)2Cl, which is the first alkali metal nitrate chloride synthesized by a mild hydrothermal method. It crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group pbam (no. 55). In addition, KRb2(NO3)2Cl crystals with dimensions up to 7 × 1.5 × 1 mm3 were grown. Notably, KRb2(NO3)2Cl has a short UV cut-off edge (below 228 nm) and a significantly enhanced birefringence (Δn = 0.084 at 1064 nm). Theoretical calculations indicate that the birefringence enhancement mainly derives from π-conjugated [NO3] plane triangles.

Abstract
Nonlinear optical (NLO) crystals are very important for laser technology, but the performances of available NLO crystals are still insufficient for increasing demand. Recently, the exploration of new NLO crystals in non-π-conjugated systems with the heteroatomic tetrahedra is attracting a lot of interest. In this work, we systematically explore the metal sulfamates containing [NH2SO3] groups and four metal sulfamates, namely, Ca(NH2SO3)2·4H2O, Ca(NH2SO3)2·H2O, Pb(NH2SO3)2·H2O, and Pb(NH2SO3)2 were synthesized by aqueous solution and hydrothermal methods. Notably, these metal sulfamates exhibit different crystal structures and optical properties owing to the diverse arrangement of the functional groups in their structures. In addition, due to hydrogen bond regulation, the centrosymmetric (CS) compound Ca(NH2SO3)2·4H2O can transform into noncentrosymmetric (NCS) Ca(NH2SO3)2·H2O, leading to NLO activity. Experimental characterizations and theoretical analysis reveal that these metal sulfamates are ultraviolet transparent and suitable for developing new NLO materials.

Abstract
The search for nonlinear optical (NLO) crystals with excellent comprehensive properties is a formidable challenge. In this work, two guanidine antimony fluorides, C(NH2)3Sb2F7 and C(NH2)3SbF4, were obtained by conjunction of [C(NH2)3] groups with π-conjugated configuration and stereochemically active Sb3+ cations. Due to the different coordination modes of Sb-F bonds and H-F hydrogen bonds, the crystal structure of C(NH2)3Sb2F7 is centrosymmetric (CS), while C(NH2)3SbF4 is noncentrosymmetric (NCS). Optical measurements show that the UV cutoff wavelengths of the title compounds were both less than 240 nm. Thermal studies indicate that these crystals are stable up to 250 °C. In addition, the second harmonic generation (SHG) response of C(NH2)3SbF4 is 2 times that of KH2PO4 (KDP) with the phase-matchable capacity. Theoretical calculations reveal that the large SHG effects of C(NH2)3SbF4 were attributed to the synergy between the planar [C(NH2)3] units and the distorted [SbF4] groups. These results demonstrate that the guanidine antimony fluorides will have potential value as UV NLO materials.

Abstract
Lead (Pb)-containing solids find widespread commercial use in batteries, piezoelectrics, and as starting materials for synthesis. Here, we combine density functional theory (DFT) and thermodynamics in a DFT + solvent ion model to compare the surface reactivity of Pb oxides and carbonates, specifically litharge, massicot, and cerussite, in contact with water. The information provided by this model is used to delineate structure-property relationships for surfaces that are able to release Pb as Pb2+. We find that Pb2+ release is dependent on pH and chemical bonding environment and go on to correlate changes in the surface bonding to key features of the electronic structure through a projected density of states analysis. Collectively, our analyses link the atomistic structure to i) specific electronic states and ii) the thermodynamics of surface transformations, and the results presented here can be used to guide synthetic efforts of Pb2+-containing materials in aqueous media or be used to better understand the initial steps in solid decomposition.

Abstract
The first alkali-metal nitrate isocyanurates, A(H3C3N3O3)(NO3) (A = K, Rb), were synthesized by the tactic of introducing (NO3)- into isocyanurate with a mild hydrothermal technique. They crystallized into the same monoclinic centrosymmetric (CS) space group P21/c, which featured a 2D [(H3C3N3O3)(NO3)]∞ layered structure separated by K+ and Rb+ cations, respectively. Both compounds exhibited short ultraviolet cutoff edges (λcutoff = 228 and 229 nm) and large birefringences (Δn = 0.253 and 0.224 at 546.1 nm). More importantly, in comparison with most of the isocyanurates and nitrates, they have better thermal stability with decomposition temperatures up to 319.8 and 324.4 °C. In addition, our theoretical calculations reveal that the π-conjugated groups play significant roles in improving the optical anisotropy. Remarkably, introducing a π-conjugated inorganic acid radical (NO3)- into isocyanurate is an extremely meaningful strategy to explore new UV birefringent crystals.

Abstract
The first example of a rare-earth metal nitrate-selenite nonlinear optical (NLO) crystal, Gd(NO3)(Se2O5)·3H2O (1), was synthesized by hydrothermal reaction. This compound crystallizes in the noncentrosymmetric space group P212121, and its structure features two-dimensional (2D) [Gd(NO3)(Se2O5)]∞ layers, extending to a pseudo-3D framework linked by hydrogen bonds. 1 exhibits a phase-matchable SHG efficiency about 0.2 times that of KH2PO4 (KDP) and a large laser damage threshold of 236.26 MW cm-2. The UV-Vis-NIR diffuse reflectance spectroscopy study shows that the UV cutoff edge of 1 is 224 nm, which is the shortest value observed among selenite-based NLO materials. The birefringence of 1 is 0.109@1064 nm based on density functional theory calculations. These optical properties make 1 a potential UV NLO material. Theoretical studies using density functional theory have been implemented to further understand the relationship between its optical properties and band structures.

Abstract
A systematic approach toward the discovering of novel functional noncentrosymmetric (NCS) materials revealing technologically useful applications is an ongoing challenge. This Frontiers article investigates a series of NCS solid solutions with respect to their crystal structure and second-harmonic generation (SHG) response. The solid solutions include NCS polar aluminoborates, Al5-xGaxBO9 (0.0 ≤ x ≤ 0.5), rare earth element-doped bismuth tellurites, Bi2-xRExTeO5 (RE = Y, Ce, and Eu; 0.0 ≤ x ≤ 0.2), layered perovskites, Bi4-xLaxTi3O12 (0.0 ≤ x ≤ 0.75: Aurivillius phases) and CsBi1-xEuxNb2O7 (0.0 ≤ x ≤ 0.2: Dion-Jacobson phases), calcium bismuth oxides, Ca4Bi6-xLnxO13 (Ln = La and Eu; x = 0, 0.06 and 0.12), and sodium lanthanide iodates, NaLa1-xLnx(IO3)4 (Ln = Sm and Eu; 0 ≤ x ≤ 1). The origin of SHG for all the NCS solid solutions is discussed and the detailed structure-nonlinear optical (NLO) property relationships are elucidated. In addition, photoluminescence (PL) properties and subsequent energy transfer mechanisms for NCS solid solutions are provided.

Spin-polarized Second Harmonic Generation from the Antiferromagnetic CaCoSO Single Crystal. Sci Rep 2017; 7:46415. Abstract
The spin-polarized second harmonic generation (SHG) of the recently synthesized CaCoSO single crystal is performed based on the calculated electronic band structure. The calculation reveals that the spin-up (↑) channel of CaCoSO possesses a direct energy gap (Γv-Γc) of about 2.187 eV, 1.187 eV (Kv-Kc) for the spin-down (↓) channel and an indirect gap (Γv-Kc) of about 0.4 eV for the spin-polarized CaCoSO single crystal. The linear optical properties obtained reveal that the recently synthesized crystal exhibits considerable anisotropy with negative uniaxial anisotropy and birefringence favor to enhance the SHG. We have calculated the three non-zero tensor components of the SHG and found the is the dominat component, one with a large SHG of about (d33 = 6.936 pm/V at λ = 1064 nm), the half value of KTiOPO4 (KTP). As the values of (↑) < (↓) < spin-polarized are related to the values of the energy gap of (↑) 2.187 eV> (↓) 1.187 eV> spin-polarized gap 0.4 eV; therefore, a smaller energy gap gives better SHG performance. Furthermore, the microscopic first hyperpolarizability, βijk, is calculated.

Abstract
Solid-state materials with extended structures have revealed many interesting structure-related characteristics. Among many, materials crystallizing in noncentrosymmetric (NCS) space groups have attracted massive attention attributable to a variety of superb functional properties such as ferroelectricity, pyroelectricity, piezoelectricity, and nonlinear optical (NLO) properties. In fact, the characteristics are pivotal to many industrial applications such as laser systems, optical communications, photolithography, energy harvesting, detectors, and memories. Thus, for the past several decades, a great deal of synthetic effort has been vigorously made to realize these technologically important properties by improving the occurrence of macroscopic NCS space groups. A bright approach to increase the incidence of NCS structures was combining local asymmetric units during the initial synthesis process. Although a significant improvement has been achieved in obtaining new NCS materials using this strategy, the majority of solid-state materials still crystallize in centrosymmetric (CS) structures as the locally unsymmetrical units are easily lined up in an antiparallel manner. Therefore, discovering an effective method to control the framework structure and the macroscopic symmetry is an imminent ongoing challenge. In order to more effectively control the overall symmetry of solid-state compounds, it is critical to understand how the backbone and the subsequent centricity are affected during the crystallization. In this Account, several factors influencing the framework structure and centricity of solid-state materials are described in order to more systematically discover novel NCS materials. Recent studies on crystalline solid-state materials suggest three factors affecting the local coordination environment as well as the overall symmetry of the framework structure: (1) size variations of the various template cations, (2) a variable backbone arrangement occurring from the hydrogen-bonding interactions, and (3) the presence of framework flexibility. With regard to the first factor, the impact of size of the various metal cations and coordination numbers on the alignment of other adjacent polyhedra, linkers, and lone pairs determining the framework geometries of mixed metal oxides is analyzed. The second factor considers the regulation of crystallographic centricity determined by the availability of hydrogen-bonding interactions between anionic frameworks containing local asymmetric polyhedra and organic cations. Finally, the third factor explores the framework architecture and the space group symmetry influenced by the flexibility of polyhedra revealing variable coordination numbers. The centricity and framework of new solid-state materials might be controlled by using a variety of synthetically controllable asymmetric units such as organic structure-directing cations and linkers with different sizes and functional groups.

Abstract
A noncentrosymmetric (NCS) titanium-organic compound, [H2N(CH3)2]TiO{[NC5H3(CO2)2][NC5H4(CO2)]} (CAUMOF-18), has been synthesized by a solvothermal reaction. The aligned unidimensional polar chain structure of CAUMOF-18 consisting of corner-shared distorted TiO5N2 pentagonal bipyramids is attributed to strong hydrogen-bonding and π-π interactions. CAUMOF-18 reveals a very strong second-harmonic-generation efficiency of 400 times that of α-SiO2 and is phase-matchable (type I). Water-molecule-driven reversible centricity conversion and topotactic transformation to TiO2 microrods for CAUMOF-18 are also presented.

Abstract
Large SHG enhancement between two isostructural silicates Sr2MSi2O7(M = Zn and Mg) was performed. The significantly enhanced SHG response of Sr2ZnSi2O7can be interpreted by the enhanced inter-band dipole resulting from strong sp hybridization between Zn and O.
