Abstract
The synthesis, luminescence, and electrochemical properties of the Ce(III) compound, [(C5Me5)2(2,6-iPr2C6H3O)Ce(THF)], 1, were investigated. Based on the electrochemical data, treatment of 1 with CuX (X = Cl, Br, I) results in the formation of the corresponding Ce(IV) complexes, [(C5Me5)2(2,6-iPr2C6H3O)Ce(X)]. Each complex has been characterized using NMR, IR, and UV-vis spectroscopy as well as structurally determined using X-ray crystallography. Additionally, the treatment of [(C5Me5)2(2,6-iPr2C6H3O)Ce(Br)] with AgF results in the formation of the putative [(C5Me5)2(2,6-iPr2C6H3O)Ce(F)]. The electronic structure of these Ce(IV)-X complexes was investigated by bond analyses and the Ce(IV)-F moiety using quantum chemistry NMR calculations.

Abstract
Dilanthanide complexes with one-electron delocalization are important targets for understanding the specific 4f/5d-bonding feature in lanthanide chemistry. Here, we report an isolable azide-bridged dicerium complex 3 [{(TrapenTMS)Ce}2(μ-N3)]• [Trapen = tris (2-aminobenzyl)amine; TMS = SiMe3], which is synthesized by the reaction of tripodal ligand-supported (TrapenTMS)CeIVCl complex 2 with NaN3. The structure and bonding nature of 3 are fully characterized by X-ray crystal diffraction analysis, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), magnetic measurement, cyclic voltammetry, X-ray absorption spectroscopy, and quantum-theoretical studies. Complex 3 presents a trans-bent central Ce-N3-Ce unit with a single electron of two mixed-valent Ce atoms. The unique low-temperature (2 K) anisotropic EPR signals [g = 1.135, 2.003, and 3.034] of 3 indicate that its spin density is distributed on the central Ce-N3-Ce unit with marked electron delocalization. Quantum chemical analyses show strong 4f/5d orbital mixing in the singly occupied molecular orbital of 3, which allows for the unpaired electron to extend throughout the cerium-azide-cerium unit via a multicentered one-electron (Ce-N3-Ce) interaction. This work extends the family of mixed-valent dilanthanide complexes and provides a paradigm for understanding the bonding motif of ligand-bridged dilanthanide complexes.

Abstract
Two-electron oxidations are ubiquitous and play a key role in the synthesis and catalysis. For transition metals and actinides, two-electron oxidation often takes place at a single-metal site. However, redox reactions at rare-earth metals have been limited to one-electron processes due to the lack of accessible oxidation states. Despite recent advancements in nontraditional oxidation state chemistry, the low stability of low-valent compounds and large disparity among different oxidation states prevented the implementation of two-electron processes at a single rare-earth metal center. Here we report two-electron oxidations at a cerium(II) center to yield cerium(IV) terminal oxo and imido complexes. A series of cerium(II-IV) complexes supported by a tripodal tris(amido)arene ligand were synthesized and characterized. Experimental and theoretical studies revealed that the cerium(II) complex is best described as a 4f2 ion stabilized by δ-backdonation to the anchoring arene, while the cerium(IV) oxo and imido complexes exhibit multiple bonding characters. The accomplishment of two-electron oxidations at a single cerium center brings a new facet to molecular rare-earth metal chemistry.

Abstract
The ligand field greatly affects the redox properties of cerium. Herein, cerium(III) and cerium(IV) complexes supported by imidazolin-2-iminato ligands were synthesized and structurally characterized, and their electrochemical properties were investigated. Silylamine elimination of cerium(III) amide Ce{N(SiMe3 )2 }3 with imidazolin-2-imine ImR NH (R=Mes, tBu, iPr) provided imidazolin-2-iminato cerium(III) complexes, [(ImMes N)(ImMes NH)Ce{N(SiMe3 )2 }2 ] (1), [(ImtBu N)2 (ImtBu NH)Ce{N(SiMe3 )2 }] (2) and [(ImiPr N)2 (ImiPr NH)Ce(μ-ImiPr N)]2 (4) in 71-85% yields. These cerium(III) complexes were successfully oxidized by Ph3 CCl or C2 Cl6 to afford imidazolin-2-iminato cerium(IV) chlorides, [(ImMes N)2 Ce{N(SiMe3 )2 }Cl] (5), [(ImtBu N)3 CeCl] (6) and [(ImiPr N)2 Ce(μ-ImiPr N)Cl]2 (7) in 70%-76% yields. All complexes were characterized by the single-crystal X-ray diffraction, which showed that 1, 2, 5 and 6 are monomers while 4 and 7 are dimers. The electrochemical studies indicated that the Ce(III/IV) couples for 5 and 6 are more negative than those of silylamido cerium(IV) complexes, and the Ce(III/IV) couples for 1 and 2 have a similar trend.

Abstract
The controlled functionalization of a single fluorine in a CF3 group is difficult and rare. Photochemical C-F bond functionalization of the sp3-C-H bond in trifluorotoluene, PhCF3, is achieved using catalysts made from earth-abundant lanthanides, (CpMe4)2Ln(2-O-3,5- t Bu2-C6H2)(1-C{N(CH)2N(iPr)}) (Ln = La, Ce, Nd and Sm, CpMe4 = C5Me4H). The Ce complex is the most effective at mediating hydrodefluorination and defluoroalkylative coupling of PhCF3 with alkenes; addition of magnesium dialkyls enables catalytic C-F bond cleavage and C-C bond formation by all the complexes. Mechanistic experiments confirm the essential role of the Lewis acidic metal and support an inner-sphere mechanism of C-F activation. Computational studies agree that coordination of the C-F substrate is essential for C-F bond cleavage. The unexpected catalytic activity for all members is made possible by the light-absorbing ability of the redox non-innocent ligands. The results described herein underscore the importance of metal-ligand cooperativity, specifically the synergy between the metal and ligand in both light absorption and redox reactivity, in organometallic photocatalysis.

Abstract
The synthesis of bona fide organometallic CeIV complexes is a formidable challenge given the typically oxidizing properties of the CeIV cation and reducing tendencies of carbanions. Herein, we report a pair of compounds comprising a CeIV - Caryl bond [Li(THF)4][CeIV(κ2-ortho-oxa)(MBP)2] (3-THF) and [Li(DME)3][CeIV(κ2-ortho-oxa)(MBP)2] (3-DME), ortho-oxa = dihydro-dimethyl-2-[4-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl]-oxazolide, MBP2- = 2,2'-methylenebis(6-tert-butyl-4-methylphenolate), which exhibit CeIV - Caryl bond lengths of 2.571(7) - 2.5806(19) Å and strongly-deshielded, CeIV - Cipso 13C{1H} NMR resonances at 255.6 ppm. Computational analyses reveal the Ce contribution to the CeIV - Caryl bond of 3-THF is ~12%, indicating appreciable metal-ligand covalency. Computations also reproduce the characteristic 13C{1H} resonance, and show a strong influence from spin-orbit coupling (SOC) effects on the chemical shift. The results demonstrate that SOC-driven deshielding is present for CeIV - Cipso 13C{1H} resonances and not just for diamagnetic actinide compounds.

Abstract
Homoleptic cerous complexes Ce[N(SiMe3)2]3, [Ce{OSi(OtBu)3}3]2 and [Ce{OSiiPr3}3]2 were employed as thermally robust, weakly nucleophilic precursors to assess their reactivity towards 1,4-quinones in non-aqueous solution. The strongly oxidizing quinones 2,3-dichloro-5,6-dicyano-1,4-benzoquinone (DDQ) or tetrachloro-1,4-benzoquinone (Cl4BQ) readily form hydroquinolato-bridged ceric complexes of the composition [(CeIVL3)2(μ2-O2C6R4)]. Less oxidising quinones like 2,5-di-tert-butyl-1,4-benzoquinone (tBu2BQ) tend to engage in redox equilibria with the ceric hydroquinolato-bridged form being stable only in the solid state. Even less oxidising quinones such as tetramethyl-1,4-benzoquinone (Me4BQ) afford cerous semiquinolates of the type [(CeIIIL2(thf)2)(μ2-O2C6Me4)]2. All complexes were characterised by X-ray diffraction, 1H, 13C{1H} and 29Si NMR spectroscopy, DRIFT spectroscopy, UV-Vis spectroscopy and CV measurements. The species putatively formed during the electrochemical reduction of [CeIV{N(SiMe3)2}3]2(μ2-O2C6H4) could be mimicked by chemical reduction with CoIICp2 yielding [(CeIII{N(SiMe3)2}3)2(μ2-O2C6H4)][CoIIICp2]2.

Abstract
An air-stable dysprosium(iii) complex, [C(NH2)3]4[DyF(piv)4](piv)2 (piv = pivalate), with a terminal fluoride ligand protected by forming extensive hydrogen bonds with peripheral guanidiniums has been isolated. Though the magnetic data failed to determine the energy barrier for the magnetic reversal (Ueff) accurately, the fine emission spectrum of the 4F9/2→6H15/2 transition at 4.2 K and ab initio calculations reveal that the Ueff is about 376(20) K, which is among the highest for high-coordinate (coordination numbers ≥ 9) lanthanide mononuclear magnets.

Abstract
The novel series of heteroleptic Sm(iii) halide complexes provides the backdrop for a fluorescence-detected Lα1 X-ray absorption spectroscopic study.
The addition of various oxidants to the near-linear Sm(ii) complex [Sm(N††)2] (1), where N†† is the bulky bis(triisopropylsilyl)amide ligand {N(SiiPr3)2}, afforded a family of heteroleptic three-coordinate Sm(iii) halide complexes, [Sm(N††)2(X)] (X = F, 2-F; Cl, 2-Cl; Br, 2-Br; I, 2-I). In addition, the trinuclear cluster [{Sm(N††)}3(μ2-I)3(μ3-I)2] (3), which formally contains one Sm(ii) and two Sm(iii) centres, was isolated during the synthesis of 2-I. Complexes 2-X are remarkably stable towards ligand redistribution, which is often a facile process for heteroleptic complexes of smaller monodentate ligands in lanthanide chemistry, including the related bis(trimethylsilyl)amide {N(SiMe3)2} (N′′). Complexes 2-X and 3 have been characterised by single crystal X-ray diffraction, elemental analysis, multinuclear NMR, FTIR and electronic spectroscopy. The Lα1 fluorescence-detected X-ray absorption spectra recorded at the Sm L3-edge for 2-X exhibited a resolved pre-edge peak defined as an envelope of quadrupole-allowed 2p → 4f transitions. The X-ray absorption spectral features were successfully reproduced using time-dependent density functional theoretical (TD-DFT) calculations that synergistically support the experimental observations as well as the theoretical model upon which the electronic structure and bonding in these lanthanide complexes is derived.

Abstract
The first dysprosium complexes with a terminal fluoride ligand are obtained as air-stable compounds. The strong, highly electrostatic dysprosium-fluoride bond generates a large axial crystal-field splitting of the J=15/2 ground state, as evidenced by high-resolution luminescence spectroscopy and correlated with the single-molecule magnet behavior through experimental magnetic susceptibility data and ab initio calculations.

Abstract
Reaction of [Ce(NR2)3] (R = SiMe3) with LiNO3 in THF, in the presence of 2,2,2-cryptand, results in the formation of the Ce(iii) "ate" complex, [Li(2,2,2-cryptand)][Ce(κ2-O2NO)(NR2)3] (1) in 38% yield. Photolysis of 1 at 380 nm affords [Li(2,2,2-cryptand)][Ce(O)(NR2)3] (2), in 33% isolated yield after reaction work-up. Complex 2 is the first reported example of a Ce(iv) oxo complex where the oxo ligand is not supported by hydrogen bonding or alkali metal coordination. Also formed during photolysis are [Li(2,2,2-cryptand)]2[(μ3-O){Ce(μ-O)(NR2)2}3] (3) and [Li(2,2,2-cryptand)][Ce(OSiMe3)(NR2)3] (4). Their identities were confirmed by X-ray crystallography. Complex 4 can also be prepared via reaction of [Ce(NR2)3] with LiOSiMe3 in THF, in the presence of 2,2,2-cryptand. When synthesized in this fashion, 4 can be isolated in 47% yield. To rationalize the presence of 2, 3, and 4 in the reaction mixture, we propose that photolysis of 1 first generates 2 and NO2, via homolytic cleavage of the N-O bond in its nitrate co-ligand. Complex 2 then undergoes decomposition via two separate routes: (1) ligand scrambling and oligomerization to form 3; and, (2) abstraction of a trimethylsilyl cation to form a transient Ce(iv) silyloxide, [CeIV(OSiMe3)(NR2)3], followed by 1e- reduction to form 4. Alternatively, complex 4 could form directly via ·SiMe3 abstraction by 2.

Abstract
A series of heteroleptic tris(cyclopentadienyl) CeIV complexes has been isolated and crystallographically characterized, revealing the broad accessibility of such organocerium(IV) compounds. The oxidation of complexes CpMe3 Ce(thf) and Cp'3 Ce(thf) (CpMe =C5 H4 Me, Cp'=C5 H4 SiMe3 ), bearing monosubstituted electron-poor cyclopentadienyl ligands, with 0.5 equivalents of 1,4-benzoquinone or C2 Cl6 gave the cerium(IV) hydroquinolate complexes CpMe3 Ce(OC6 H4 O)CeCpMe3 and Cp'3 Ce(OC6 H4 O)CeCp'3 , or the chloride complexes CpMe3 CeCl and Cp'3 CeCl, respectively; the iodide complex Cp'3 CeI was obtained from the reaction of Cp'3 Ce(thf) with elemental iodine. The behavior of Cp'3 CeCl in salt metathesis protocols employing alkali metal amides or alkyl, alkoxide, and aryloxide reagents was investigated, which gave rise to the robust and isolable cerium(IV) alkoxide Cp'3 Ce(OtBu). Trivalent [Cp'2 CeCl]2 was synthesized by AlMe4 →Cl exchange utilizing Cp'2 Ce(AlMe4 ) and AlMe2 Cl. The reactivity of [Cp'2 CeCl]2 towards the oxidants Ph3 CCl, C2 Cl6 , 1,4-benzoquinone, and I2 has been assessed, and has provided useful information on CeIII /CeIV redox deactivation pathways. In addition to X-ray structure analysis, all the complexes were characterized by NMR, DRIFT (diffuse reflectance IR Fourier transform), and UV/Vis spectroscopy as well as elemental analysis. The tetravalent compounds were further analyzed for their magnetic susceptibility by using Evans' method.

Abstract
Two methods to correlate and predict experimental redox potentials for cerium complexes were evaluated. Seventeen previously reported cerium complexes were computed using DFT methods in both the CeIII and CeIV oxidation states with a dichloromethane solvent continuum. In the first computational approach, the ΔGo(CeIV/CeIII) was determined for each of the compounds and these values were correlated with the experimental E1/2 values measured in dichloromethane, referenced to the ferrocene/ferrocenium couple. The second method involved correlating the energies of the CeIV LUMOs (lowest unoccupied molecular orbitals) with the experimental redox potentials, E1/2. The predictive capabilities of these two correlative methods were tested using a new cerium hydroxylamine complex, Ce(ODiNOx)2 (ODiNOx = bis(2-tert-butylhydroxylaminatobenzyl) ether). All 18 complexes studied in this paper were combined with the 15 complexes determined in acetonitrile from a previously published correlation by our group. These sets of data allowed us to develop two methods for predicting the redox potential of cerium complexes regardless of the solvent for the experimental measurement.

Abstract
Structurally authenticated, terminal lanthanide-ligand multiple bonds are rare and expected to be highly reactive. Even capped with an alkali metal cation, poor orbital energy matching and overlap of metal and ligand valence orbitals should result in strong charge polarization within such bonds. We expand on a new strategy for isolating terminal lanthanide-ligand multiple bonds using cerium(IV) complexes. In the current case, our tailored tris(hydroxylaminato) ligand framework, TriNOx(3-), provides steric protection against ligand scrambling and metal complex oligomerization and electronic protection against reduction. This strategy culminates in isolation of the first formal Ce═N bonded moiety in the complex [K(DME)2][Ce═N(3,5-(CF3)2C6H3)(TriNOx)], whose Ce═N bond is the shortest known at 2.119(3) Å.

Abstract
Two complete mixed-ligand series of luminescent Ce(III) complexes with the general formulas [(Me3Si)2NC(N(i)Pr)2]xCe(III)[N(SiMe3)2]3-x (x = 0, 1-N; x = 1, 2-N, x = 2, 3-N; x = 3, 4) and [(Me3Si)2NC(N(i)Pr)2]xCe(III)(OAr)3-x (x = 0, 1-OAr; x = 1, 2-OAr, x = 2, 3-OAr; x = 3, 4) were developed, featuring photoluminescence quantum yields up to 0.81(2) and lifetimes to 117(1) ns. Although the 4f → 5d absorptive transitions for these complexes were all found at ca. 420 nm, their emission bands exhibited large Stokes shifts with maxima occurring at 553 nm for 1-N, 518 nm for 2-N, 508 nm for 3-N, and 459 nm for 4, featuring yellow, lime-green, green, and blue light, respectively. Combined time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) calculations and spectroscopic studies suggested that the long-lived (2)D excited states of these complexes corresponded to singly occupied 5dz(2) orbitals. The observed difference in the Stokes shifts was attributed to the relaxation of excited states through vibrational processes facilitated by the ligands. The photochemistry of the sterically congested complex 4 was demonstrated by C-C bond forming reaction between 4-fluoroiodobenzene and benzene through an outer sphere electron transfer pathway, which expands the capabilities of cerium photosensitizers beyond our previous results that demonstrated inner sphere halogen atom abstraction reactivity by 1-N.

Abstract
We report comparable levels of covalency in cerium- and uranium-carbon multiple bonds in the iso-structural carbene complexes [M(BIPMTMS)(ODipp)2] [M = Ce (1), U (2), Th (3); BIPMTMS = C(PPh2NSiMe3)2; Dipp = C6H3-2,6-iPr2] whereas for M = Th the M[double bond, length as m-dash]C bond interaction is much more ionic. On the basis of single crystal X-ray diffraction, NMR, IR, EPR, and XANES spectroscopies, and SQUID magnetometry complexes 1-3 are confirmed formally as bona fide metal(iv) complexes. In order to avoid the deficiencies of orbital-based theoretical analysis approaches we probed the bonding of 1-3 via analysis of RASSCF- and CASSCF-derived densities that explicitly treats the orbital energy near-degeneracy and overlap contributions to covalency. For these complexes similar levels of covalency are found for cerium(iv) and uranium(iv), whereas thorium(iv) is found to be more ionic, and this trend is independently found in all computational methods employed. The computationally determined trends in covalency of these systems of Ce ∼ U > Th are also reproduced in experimental exchange reactions of 1-3 with MCl4 salts where 1 and 2 do not exchange with ThCl4, but 3 does exchange with MCl4 (M = Ce, U) and 1 and 2 react with UCl4 and CeCl4, respectively, to establish equilibria. This study therefore provides complementary theoretical and experimental evidence that contrasts to the accepted description that generally lanthanide-ligand bonding in non-zero oxidation state complexes is overwhelmingly ionic but that of uranium is more covalent.

Abstract
We report the exchange processes and reactivity of 1-Ce(het), which establish the effects of ligand redistribution and ligand reorganization in CeIII oxidation chemistry.
The CeIII/IV couple is useful for many applications in organic, inorganic, and materials chemistry. However, attaining a general method to access both oxidations states through reversible solution redox chemistry remains challenging. Herein we report the synthesis, characterization, and oxidation chemistry of the novel Ce/Li REMB heterochiral diastereomer, 1-Ce(het). The solution exchange processes of 1-RE(het) (RE = Ce and Yb) were investigated to estimate rates of ligand and cation exchange relevant in homochiral and heterochiral frameworks. A detailed mechanistic investigation following the solution dynamics of 1-Ce(het) revealed reactivity controlled both by ligand reorganization and redistribution processes. Ligand reorganization was responsible for the kinetics associated with the chemical oxidation reaction, whereas ligand redistribution and exchange dictated the isolated products.

Abstract
Reaction of the oxidovanadium(IV)-L(N-N) species (L(N-N) is bipy = 2,2'-bipyridine or bipy-like molecules) with either BF4(-) or HF and/or KF results in the formation of compounds of the general formula cis-[V(IV)(═O)(F)(L(N-N))2](+). Structural and spectroscopic (electron paramagnetic resonance) characterization shows that these compounds are in the tetravalent oxidation state containing a terminal fluorido ligand. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the V(IV)-F bond is mainly electrostatic, which is reinforced by reactivity studies that demonstrate the nucleophilicity of the fluoride ligand in a halogen exchange reaction and in fluorination of various organic substrates.

Abstract
We report a comparison of the molecular and electronic structures of dithio- and diselenophosphinate, (E2PR2)(1-) (E = S, Se; R = (i)Pr, (t)Bu), with thorium(IV) and uranium(IV) complexes. For the thorium dithiophosphinate complexes, reaction of ThCl4(DME)2 with 4 equiv of KS2PR2 (R = (i)Pr, (t)Bu) produced the homoleptic complexes, Th(S2P(i)Pr2)4 (1S-Th-(i)Pr) and Th(S2P(t)Bu2)4 (2S-Th-(t)Bu). The diselenophosphinate complexes were synthesized in a similar manner using KSe2PR2 to produce Th(Se2P(i)Pr2)4 (1Se-Th-(i)Pr) and Th(Se2P(t)Bu2)4 (2Se-Th-(t)Bu). U(S2P(i)Pr2)4, 1S-U-(i)Pr, could be made directly from UCl4 and 4 equiv of KS2P(i)Pr2. With (Se2P(i)Pr2)(1-), using UCl4 and 3 or 4 equiv of KSe2P(i)Pr2 yielded the monochloride product U(Se2P(i)Pr2)3Cl (3Se-U(iPr)-Cl), but using UI4(1,4-dioxane)2 produced the homoleptic U(Se2P(i)Pr2)4 (1Se-U-(i)Pr). Similarly, the reaction of UCl4 with 4 equiv of KS2P(t)Bu2 yielded U(S2P(t)Bu2)4 (2S-U-(t)Bu), whereas the reaction with KSe2P(t)Bu2 resulted in the formation of U(Se2P(t)Bu2)3Cl (4Se-U(tBu)-Cl). Using UI4(1,4-dioxane)2 and 4 equiv of KSe2P(t)Bu2 with UCl4 in acetonitrile yielded U(Se2P(t)Bu2)4 (2Se-U-(t)Bu). Transmetalation reactions were investigated with complex 2Se-U-(t)Bu and various CuX (X = Br, I) salts to yield U(Se2P(t)Bu2)3X (6Se-U(tBu)-Br and 7Se-U(tBu)-I) and 0.25 equiv of [Cu(Se2P(t)Bu2)]4 (8Se-Cu-(t)Bu). Additionally, 2Se-U-(t)Bu underwent transmetalation reactions with Hg2F2 and ZnCl2 to yield U(Se2P(t)Bu2)3F (6) and U(Se2P(t)Bu2)3Cl (4Se-U(tBu)-Cl), respectively. The molecular structures were analyzed using (1)H, (13)C, (31)P, and (77)Se NMR and IR spectroscopy and structurally characterized using X-ray crystallography. Using the QTAIM approach, the electronic structure of all homoleptic complexes was probed, showing slightly more covalent bonding character in actinide-selenium bonds over actinide-sulfur bonds.

Abstract
The trivalent compound K[Ce[N(SiHMe2)2]4] was synthesized and oxidized, providing a convenient route to the reported cerium(IV) compound Ce[N(SiHMe2)2]4. Protonolysis reactions of Ce[N(SiHMe2)2]4 with tert-butanol, substituted benzyl alcohols, and 2,6-diphenylphenol yielded the neutral tetravalent compounds Ce(O(t)Bu)4(py)2, Ce2(OCH2C6R5)8(thf)2 (R = Me, F), and Ce(Odpp)4 (dpp = 2,6-(C6H5)2-C6H3). Spectroscopic and electrochemical characterization of the monometallic cerium(IV) silylamide, alkoxide, and aryloxide compounds revealed variable ligand-to-metal charge transfer transitions and metal-based reduction potentials. Computational bonding analyses were performed to complement the physical characterization of the complexes.

Abstract
Treatment of the metallacycle [UN*2(N,C)] [N* = N(SiMe3)2; N,C = CH2SiMe2N(SiMe3)] with [HNEt3][BPh4], [HNEt3]Cl, and [pyH][OTf] (OTf = OSO2CF3) gave the cationic compound [UN*3][BPh4] (1) and the neutral complexes [UN*3X] [X = Cl (3), OTf (4)], respectively. The dinuclear complex [{UN*(μ-N,C)(μ-OTf)}2] (5) and its tetrahydrofuran (THF) adduct [{UN*(N,C)(THF)(μ-OTf)}2] (6) were obtained by thermal decomposition of 4. The successive addition of NEt4CN or KCN to 1 led to the formation of the cyanido-bridged dinuclear compound [(UN*3)2(μ-CN)][BPh4] (7) and the mononuclear mono- and bis(cyanide) complexes [UN*3(CN)] (2) and [M][UN*3(CN)2] [M = NEt4 (8), K(THF)4 (9)], while crystals of [K(18-crown-6)][UN*3(CN)2] (10) were obtained by the oxidation of [K(18-crown-6)][UN*3(CN)] with pyridine N-oxide. The THF adduct of 1, [UN*3(THF)][BPh4], and complexes 2-7, 9 and 10 were characterized by their X-ray crystal structure. In contrast to their U(III) analogues [NMe4][UN*3(CN)] and [K(18-crown-6)]2[UN*3(CN)2] in which the CN anions are coordinated to the metal center via the C atom, complexes 2 and 9 exhibit the isocyanide U-NC coordination mode of the cyanide ligand. This U(III)/U(IV) differentiation has been analyzed using density functional theory calculations. The observed preferential coordinations are well explained considering the electronic structures of the different species and metal-ligand bonding energies. A comparison of the different quantum descriptors, i.e., bond orders, NPA/QTAIM data, and energy decomposition analysis, has allowed highlighting of the subtle balance between covalent, ionic, and steric factors that govern the U-CN/NC bonding.

Abstract
The first complete series of isostructural cerium(IV) halide complexes in a conserved ligand framework was isolated by halogen-exchange reactions of CeF[N(SiMe3)2]3 with Me3SiX (X = Cl(-), Br(-), I(-)). The use of Me3SiX reagents represents a useful method for obtaining cerium(IV) complexes. Spectroscopic, electrochemical, and computational analyses were used to describe the effects of halide coordination on the cerium(IV) metal center. Cerium(IV) complexes of the pseudohalide ligands: N3(-) and NCS(-) were also synthesized and evaluated in comparison to the halide congeners. The results showed that the complexes exhibited reduction potentials and electronic absorption energies that varied with the identity of the halide or pseudohalide ligand.
