Abstract
It is a great challenge to develop UV nonlinear optical (NLO) material due to the demanding conditions of strong second harmonic generation (SHG) intensity and wide band gap. The first ultraviolet NLO selenite material, Y3 F(SeO3 )4 , has been obtained by control of the fluorine content in a centrosymmetric CaYF(SeO3 )2 . The two new compounds represent similar 3D structures composed of 3D yttrium open frameworks strengthened by selenite groups. CaYF(SeO3 )2 has a large birefringence (0.138@532 nm and 0.127@1064 nm) and a wide optical band gap (5.06 eV). The non-centrosymmetric Y3 F(SeO3 )4 can exhibit strong SHG intensity (5.5×KDP@1064 nm), wide band gap (5.03 eV), short UV cut-off edge (204 nm) and high thermal stability (690 °C). So, Y3 F(SeO3 )4 is a new UV NLO material with excellent comprehensive properties. Our work shows that it is an effective method to develop new UV NLO selenite material by fluorination control of the centrosymmetric compounds.

Abstract
The quaternary A 2W3SeO12 (A = NH4, Cs, Rb, K or Tl) selenites have been prepared in the form of single crystals by hydro-thermal and novel solid-state reactions. They were characterized by X-ray diffraction, thermal and spectroscopic studies. All of them have a hexa-gonal tungsten oxide (HTO) related [W3SeO12]2- anionic framework with pyramidally coordinated Se4+ ions. The known A 2W3SeO12 (A = NH4, Cs or Rb) compounds are isostructural with the Cs2W3TeO12 compound and have a non-centrosymmetric layered structure containing intra-layer Se-O bonds. The new compound K2W3SeO12(α) is isostructural with the K2W3TeO12 compound and has a centrosymmetric three-dimensional structure containing inter-layer Se-O bonds. It is inferred that the new Tl2W3SeO12 compound has the same three-dimensional structure as K2W3SeO12(α).

Abstract
Interactions between well-mixed fine powders of As2O3, P2O5, MoO3, WO3 and Nb2O5 at different stoichiometry in quartz ampoules under vacuum at ~1000 °C in the presence of metallic molybdenum (or niobium), over several weeks, led to shiny dichroic crystalline materials being formed in cooler parts of the reaction vessel. An addition of small quantities of metals-Mo or Nb-was made with the aim of partially reducing their highly oxidized Mo(VI), W(VI) or Nb(V) species to corresponding Mo(V), W(V) and Nb(IV) centers, in order to form mixed valence solids. Sublimed crystals of four new compounds were investigated using a variety of techniques, with prime emphasis on the X-ray analysis, followed by spectroscopy (diffusion reflectance, IR, Raman and EPR), second harmonic generation (SHG), thermal analysis under N2 and air atmosphere, and single crystals electrical conductivity studies. The results evidenced the formation of new complex solids of previously unknown compositions and structures. Three out of four compounds crystallized in non-centrosymmetric space groups and represent layered 2D polymeric puckered structures that being stacked on each other form 3D lattices. All new solids exhibit strong second-harmonic-generation (SHG effect; based on YAG 1064 nm tests with detection of 532 nm photons), and a rare photosalient effect when crystals physically move in the laser beam. Single crystals' electrical conductivity of the four new synthesized compounds was measured, and the results showed their semiconductor behavior. Values of band gaps of these new solids were determined using diffusion reflectance spectroscopy in the visible region. Aspects of new solids' practical usefulness are discussed.

Abstract
Solid-state materials with extended structures have revealed many interesting structure-related characteristics. Among many, materials crystallizing in noncentrosymmetric (NCS) space groups have attracted massive attention attributable to a variety of superb functional properties such as ferroelectricity, pyroelectricity, piezoelectricity, and nonlinear optical (NLO) properties. In fact, the characteristics are pivotal to many industrial applications such as laser systems, optical communications, photolithography, energy harvesting, detectors, and memories. Thus, for the past several decades, a great deal of synthetic effort has been vigorously made to realize these technologically important properties by improving the occurrence of macroscopic NCS space groups. A bright approach to increase the incidence of NCS structures was combining local asymmetric units during the initial synthesis process. Although a significant improvement has been achieved in obtaining new NCS materials using this strategy, the majority of solid-state materials still crystallize in centrosymmetric (CS) structures as the locally unsymmetrical units are easily lined up in an antiparallel manner. Therefore, discovering an effective method to control the framework structure and the macroscopic symmetry is an imminent ongoing challenge. In order to more effectively control the overall symmetry of solid-state compounds, it is critical to understand how the backbone and the subsequent centricity are affected during the crystallization. In this Account, several factors influencing the framework structure and centricity of solid-state materials are described in order to more systematically discover novel NCS materials. Recent studies on crystalline solid-state materials suggest three factors affecting the local coordination environment as well as the overall symmetry of the framework structure: (1) size variations of the various template cations, (2) a variable backbone arrangement occurring from the hydrogen-bonding interactions, and (3) the presence of framework flexibility. With regard to the first factor, the impact of size of the various metal cations and coordination numbers on the alignment of other adjacent polyhedra, linkers, and lone pairs determining the framework geometries of mixed metal oxides is analyzed. The second factor considers the regulation of crystallographic centricity determined by the availability of hydrogen-bonding interactions between anionic frameworks containing local asymmetric polyhedra and organic cations. Finally, the third factor explores the framework architecture and the space group symmetry influenced by the flexibility of polyhedra revealing variable coordination numbers. The centricity and framework of new solid-state materials might be controlled by using a variety of synthetically controllable asymmetric units such as organic structure-directing cations and linkers with different sizes and functional groups.

Abstract
Abstract
Single crystals of [NaCl][Cu(HSeO3)2] have been prepared by the chemical vapor transport reactions. Its crystal structure (monoclinic, C2/c, a = 13.9874(7), b = 7.2594(4), c = 9.0421(5) Å, β = 127.046(2)°, V = 732.81(7) Å3) is based upon electroneutral [Cu(HSeO3)2] sheets formed by corner sharing between the [CuO4] squares and (HSeO3) groups that are parallel to the (100) plane. Each (SeO2OH)– group forms the Oh1...O2 hydrogen bond to an adjacent hydroselenite group to constitute a [(SeO2OH)2]2– dimer that provides additional stabilization of the copper diselenite sheet. The [Cu(HSeO3)2] sheets alternate with the sheets consisting of zigzag–Na–Cl–Na–Cl–chains formed by Cl atoms and disordered Na sites. The chains are parallel to the c axis. The linkage between the alternating electroneutral [Cu(HSeO3)2] and [NaCl] sheets is provided by the Cu–Cl and Na–O bonds. The coordination of Na is fivefold and consists of three O and two Cl atoms. [NaCl][Cu(HSeO3)2] is a new member of the group of compounds based upon the M(HSeO3)2 layers (M2+ = Cu, Co, Cd). The prototype structure for this group is [Cu(HSeO3)2] that does not have any chemical species separating the copper hydroselenite layers. In other compounds, the interlayer space between the [Cu(HSeO3)2]0 layers is occupied by structural units of different complexity. [NaCl][Cu(HSeO3)2] can be considered as [Cu(HSeO3)2] intercalated with the NaCl layers consisting of one-dimensional–Na–Cl–Na–Cl–chains.

Abstract
While BaZr(IO3)6 reveals a unidimensional band structure, K2Zr(IO3)6 exhibits a zero-dimensional molecular geometry. The dimensionality variations are attributable to the flexible coordination numbers of Zr4+ cations with large ionic radii as well as the number of counter cations.
