Tiara-like Octanuclear Palladium(II) and Platinum(II) Thiolates and Their Inclusion Complexes with Dihalo- or Iodoalkanes

Balancing Pd-H Interactions: Thiolate-Protected Palladium Nanoclusters for Robust and Rapid Hydrogen Gas Sensing

The transition toward hydrogen gas (H2) as an eco-friendly and renewable energy source necessitates advanced safety technologies, particularly robust sensors for H2 leak detection and concentration monitoring. Although palladium (Pd)-based materials are preferred for their strong H2 affinity, intense palladium-hydrogen (Pd-H) interactions lead to phase transitions to palladium hydride (PdHx), compromising sensors' durability and detection speeds after multiple uses. In response, this study introduces a high-performance H2 sensor designed from thiolate-protected Pd nanoclusters (Pd8SR16), which leverages the synergistic effect between the metal and protective ligands to form an intermediate palladium-hydrogen-sulfur (Pd-H-S) state during H2 adsorption. Striking a balance, it preserves Pd-H binding affinity while preventing excessive interaction, thus lowering the energy required for H2 desorption. The dynamic adsorption-dissociation-recombination-desorption process is efficiently and highly reversible with Pd8SR16, ensuring robust and rapid H2 sensing at parts per million (ppm). The Pd8SR16-based sensor demonstrates exceptional stability (50 cycles; 0.11% standard deviation in response), prompt response/recovery (t90 = 0.95 s/6 s), low limit of detection (LoD, 1 ppm), and ambient temperature operability, ranking it among the most sensitive Pd-based H2 sensors. Furthermore, a multifunctional prototype demonstrates the practicality of real-world gas sensing using ligand-protected metal nanoclusters.

Oligomeric Zinc Thiolates Tethering Multidentate Carboxylates for Nondestructive Aqueous Phase Transfer of Quantum Dots

Functionalization of quantum dots (QDs) via ligand exchange is prone to debase their photoluminescence quantum yield (PL QY) owing to the unavoidable surface damage by excess reactants, and even worse in aqueous medium. Herein, the oligomeric zinc thiolate as the multidentate hydrophilic ligand featuring facile synthetic protocol is proposed. A simple reaction between ZnCl2 and 3-mercaptopropionic acid produces oligomeric ligands containing 3-6 zinc thiolate units, where the terminal moieties provide multidentate anchoring to the surface as well as hydrophilicity. 2D proton nuclear Overhauser effect spectroscopy (2D 1H NOESY) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) reveal that the oligomeric zinc thiolate ligands adsorb on the surface via multidentate metal carboxylate bindings without destruction of molecular structure, regardless of partial dissociation of thiolate branches in aqueous phase. Enhanced binding affinity granted by the multidentate nature allows for the effective exchange of original surface ligands without considerable surface deterioration. The zinc thiolate-capped Cd-free aqueous QDs exhibit a high photoluminescence quantum yield of ≈90% and extended stability against long-term storage and photochemical stress.

Tiara-like Hexanuclear Nickel-Platinum Alloy Nanocluster

Tiara-like metal nanoclusters (TNCs) have attracted a great deal of attention because of their high stability and easy synthesis under atmospheric conditions as well as their high activity in various catalytic reactions. Alloying is one of the methods that can be used to control the physicochemical properties of nanoclusters, but few studies have reported on alloy TNCs. In this study, we synthesized alloy TNCs [NixPt6-x(PET)12, where x = 1-5 and PET = 2-phenylethanethiolate] consisting of thiolate, nickel (Ni), and platinum (Pt). We further evaluated the stability, geometric structure, and electronic structure by high-performance liquid chromatography and density functional theory calculations. The results revealed that NixPt6-x(PET)12 has a distorted structure and is therefore less stable than single-metal TNCs.

Reduced Tiara-like Palladium Complex for Suzuki Cross-Coupling Reactions

The design of highly active and structurally well-defined catalysts has become a crucial issue for heterogeneous catalysed reactions while reducing the amount of catalyst employed. Beside conventional synthetic routes, the employment of polynuclear transition metal complexes as catalysts or catalyst precursors has progressively intercepted a growing interest. These well-defined species promise to deliver catalytic systems where a strict control on the nuclearity allows to improve the catalytic performance while reducing the active phase loading. This study describes the development of a highly active and reusable palladium-based catalyst on alumina (Pd8 /Al2 O3 ) for Suzuki cross-coupling reactions. An octanuclear tiara-like palladium complex was selected as active phase precursor to give isolated Pd-clusters of ca. 1 nm in size on Al2 O3 . The catalyst was thoroughly characterised by several complementary techniques to assess its structural and chemical nature. The high specific activity of the catalyst has allowed to carry out the cross-coupling reaction in 30 min using only 0.12 mol % of Pd loading under very mild and green reaction conditions. Screening of various substrates and selectivity tests, combined with recycling and benchmarking experiments, have been used to highlight the great potentialities of this new Pd8 /Al2 O3 catalyst.

Cavity Size Effect on Host-Guest Property of Tiara-like Structural Mn(SR)2n Nanoclusters Probed by NMR Spectroscopy

The lack of detect technology hinders the understanding of host-guest (H-G) chemical properties for thiolate-protected tiara-like structural nanoclusters (Mn(SR)2n). In this work, NMR spectroscopy is demonstrated as a powerful tool to probe the H-G structure of Mn(SR)2n both experimentally and theoretically. A low-field shifting and wide chemical shift (CS) signal of the H nucleus in CH2Cl2 is observed in the NMR spectrum of the mixture of CH2Cl2 and Pd8(PET)16 (PET is 2-phenylethanethiol), agreeing with the theoretical results that a deshielding area appears in the central cavity of Pd8(SR)16. All Mn(SR)2n own similar nucleus-independent chemical shift maps and deshielding cavities, which means that the H nucleus in small molecules trapped by Mn(SR)2n should have consistent low-field shifted CSs. However, such a phenomenon was only observed in the NMR spectrum of the mixed solution of Pd8(SR)16 and CH2Cl2, indicating that Pd8(SR)16 is the only one in the series of Pdn(SR)2n (n = 4~16) analogues that can capture a CH2Cl2, the H-G properties of Mn(SR)2n are highly dependent on their cavity sizes, and a guest molecule only inserts into the matching cavity of Mn(SR)2n. We anticipate that the realization of such convenient probe strategy will give a deeper understanding of the H-G properties of Mn(SR)2n.

The Factors Dictating Properties of Atomically Precise Metal Nanocluster Electrocatalysts

Metal nanoparticles occupy an important position in electrocatalysis. Unfortunately, by using conventional synthetic methodology, it is a great challenge to realize the monodisperse composition/structure of metal nanoparticles at the atomic level, and to establish correlations between the catalytic properties and the structure of individual catalyst particles. For the study of well-defined nanocatalysts, great advances have been made for the successful synthesis of nanoparticles with atomic precision, notably ligand-passivated metal nanoclusters. Such well-defined metal nanoclusters have become a type of model catalyst and have shown great potential in catalysis research. In this review, the authors summarize the advances in the utilization of atomically precise metal nanoclusters for electrocatalysis. In particular, the factors (e.g., size, metal doping/alloying, ligand engineering, support materials as well as charge state of clusters) affecting selectivity and activity of catalysts are highlighted. The authors aim to provide insightful guidelines for the rational design of electrocatalysts with high performance and perspectives on potential challenges and opportunities in this emerging field.

Metal Centers as Nucleophiles: Oxymoron of Halogen Bond-Involving Crystal Engineering

This review highlights recent studies discovering unconventional halogen bonding (HaB) that involves positively charged metal centers. These centers provide their filled d‐orbitals for HaB, and thus behave as nucleophilic components toward the noncovalent interaction. This role of some electron‐rich transition metal centers can be considered an oxymoron in the sense that the metal is, in most cases, formally cationic; consequently, its electron donor function is unexpected. The importance of Ha⋅⋅⋅d‐[M] (Ha=halogen; M is Group 9 (Rh, Ir), 10 (Ni, Pd, Pt), or 11 (Cu, Au)) interactions in crystal engineering is emphasized by showing remarkable examples (reported and uncovered by our processing of the Cambridge Structural Database), where this Ha⋅⋅⋅d‐[M] directional interaction guides the formation of solid supramolecular assemblies of different dimensionalities.

Coinage-metal pillarplexes hosts. Insights into host-guest interaction nature and luminescence quenching effects

Host-guest chemistry is a relevant issue in materials science, which encourages further development of versatile host structures. Here the particular features of coinage-metal pillarplexes are evaluated towards formation of host-guest aggregates by the inclusion of 1,8-diaminooctane, as characterized for [M8(LMe)2]4+ (M = Ag, and, Au). The obtained results denotes the main contribution from van der Waals type interaction (50%), followed by a contribution from orbital polarization and electrostatic nature (20% and 30%), involving both orbitalary and electrostatic terms. Throughout the different coinage-metal based hosts (M = Cu, Ag, and Au), a similar interaction energy is found given by the large contribution of the π-surface from the organic ligand backbone to both van de Waals and electrostatic interactions. This suggests that a similar host structure can be obtained for the lighter copper counterpart, retaining similar how-guest features. Moreoves, the [Au8(LMe)2]4+ host exhibits inherent luminescent properties, involving the shortening of Au(i)-Au(i) contacts at the excited state, which is partially avoided when the guest is incorporated, accounting for the observed quenching from titration experiments. This results encourages further exploration of coinage metal hosts in the formation of inclusion complexes.

Influence of Hydrogen-Bonding Interactions on Nuclearity and Structure of Palladium Tiara-like Complexes

The role of intramolecular hydrogen-bonding interactions upon the nuclearity of palladium tiara-like complexes is reported herein. The synthesis of three palladium tiaras is described with three related thiolate ligands that vary in their hydrogen-bonding capability, amide vs ester for N-acetylcysteamine (tiara 1) vs 2-mercaptoethyl acetate (tiara 2) or ethyl thioglycolate (tiara 3), and in the relative position of the ester group, 2-mercaptoethyl acetate (2) or ethyl thioglycolate (3). Mass spectrometry indicates that, in the absence of protic solvents, N-acetylcysteamine reacts to form exclusively a six-membered tiara, [Pd(SCH₂CH₂NHCOCH₃)₂]₆, 1, whereas the ester containing analogues form both six- and eight-membered tiaras. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies indicate the significance of intramolecular N-H···O hydrogen bonds in determining the nuclearity of the amide-containing tiara 1. NMR studies indicate that 1 is not in equilibrium with larger tiaras in solution, and that the smaller size of the aggregate inhibits the fluxional behavior of the pendant thiolate ligands, typically observed for larger tiaras. Electrochemical investigations of 1 reveal reductive processes that exhibit an increase in current upon addition of acid, along with the formation of palladium nanoparticles.

Catalytic Modification of Dehydroalanine in Peptides and Proteins by Palladium-Mediated Cross-Coupling

Dehydroalanine (Dha) is a remarkably versatile non‐canonical amino acid often found in antimicrobial peptides. Herein, we present the catalytic modification of Dha by a palladium‐mediated cross‐coupling reaction. By using Pd(EDTA)(OAc)₂ as water‐soluble catalyst, a variety of arylboronic acids was coupled to the dehydrated residues in proteins and peptides, such as Nisin. The cross‐coupling reaction gave both the Heck product, in which the sp²‐hybridisation of the α‐carbon is retained, as well as the conjugated addition product. The reaction can be performed under mild aqueous conditions, which makes this method an attractive addition to the palette of bio‐orthogonal catalytic methods.

Platinum clusters with precise numbers of atoms for preparative-scale catalysis

Subnanometer noble metal clusters have enormous potential, mainly for catalytic applications. Because a difference of only one atom may cause significant changes in their reactivity, a preparation method with atomic-level precision is essential. Although such a precision with enough scalability has been achieved by gas-phase synthesis, large-scale preparation is still at the frontier, hampering practical applications. We now show the atom-precise and fully scalable synthesis of platinum clusters on a milligram scale from tiara-like platinum complexes with various ring numbers (n = 5-13). Low-temperature calcination of the complexes on a carbon support under hydrogen stream affords monodispersed platinum clusters, whose atomicity is equivalent to that of the precursor complex. One of the clusters (Pt10) exhibits high catalytic activity in the hydrogenation of styrene compared to that of the other clusters. This method opens an avenue for the application of these clusters to preparative-scale catalysis.The catalytic activity of a noble metal nanocluster is tied to its atomicity. Here, the authors report an atom-precise, fully scalable synthesis of platinum clusters from molecular ring precursors, and show that a variation of only one atom can dramatically change a cluster's reactivity.

Synthesis of pincer-type extractants for selective extraction of palladium from PGMs: An improved liquid-liquid extraction approach to current refining processes

SCS pincer ligands 1–4 were synthesised, and their ability to extract Pd(II) from HCl and HNO₃ media was studied. The Pd(II) extraction properties of 1–4 were compared with those of commercial extractants (DOS and LIX^®84-I) in kerosene. 1 and 2 showed superior Pd(II) extractability (E% = 99.9) relative to DOS and LIX^®84-I from 0.1–8.0 M HCl and to DOS from 0.1–8.0 M HNO₃ and mixed HCl + HNO₃ media. The Pd(II) extraction rate, acid durability, the most suitable organic/aqueous (O/A) phase ratio, and Pd(II) loading capacity of extractants 1, 2, and DOS were evaluated. 1 and 2 exhibited a greater Pd(II) extraction rate and Pd(II) loading capacity than DOS. 1 was very stable in acid media (HCl and HCl + HNO₃), whereas 2 and DOS deteriorated in HCl + HNO₃. Selective extraction of Pd(II) by 1 and 2 was achieved from a mixed solution containing Pd, Pt, Rh, rare metals, and base metal ions that simulated the leach liquors of automotive catalysts. The back extraction of Pd(II) and reusability of extractants 1 and 2 were studied. The Pd(II) extraction mechanism of 1–4 was investigated using FT-IR, UV-visible, and NMR spectroscopy.

The fluorescence properties of tiara like structural thiolated palladium clusters

A series of tiara like structural Pd_n(SR)_2n (5 ≤ n ≤ 20) nanoclusters exhibit emission at 620 nm with excitation at around 268 nm. Their emission is due to ligand to metal charge transfer.

Hexanuclear Platinum(II) Thiolate Macrocyclic Host: Charge-Transfer-Driven Inclusion of a Ag(I) Ion Guest

The inclusion of a Ag(I) ion by a hexanuclear platinum(II) thiolate macrocycle in solution was demonstrated, and the inclusion structure was determined by X-ray crystallography. Unique host-guest intermetallic interactions driven by charge transfer were elucidated by optical absorption spectroscopy and theoretical calculations.

Atom precise platinum-thiol crowns

Ligand stabilized water soluble Pt nanoclusters were synthesized and characterized through electrospray ionization mass spectrometry. Glutathione was used as the ligand, and Pt5(SG)10, and Pt6(SG)12 clusters were synthesized. Theoretical investigations found that these clusters do not possess a metal core, but rather are most stable in a ring structure. The clusters are stabilized through the thiol ligands forming a square planar structure around each Pt atom to form a ring. The structural elucidation was confirmed through UV/Vis and IR spectroscopy.

Synthesis and Properties Evolution of a Family of Tiara-like Phenylethanethiolated Palladium Nanoclusters

Tiara-like thiolated group 10 transition metal (Ni, Pd, Pt) nanoclusters have attracted extensive interest due to their fundamental scientific significance and potential application in a number of fields. However, the properties (e.g. the absorption) evolution with the ring size’s increase was not investigated so far to our best knowledge, due to the challenge of obtaining a series of nanocluster analogues. Herein, we successfully synthesized, isolated and identified a family of [Pd(SC₂H₄Ph)₂]_n nanoclusters (totally 17 novel clusters, n = 4–20). Their structures were determined to be tiara-like by single crystal X-ray crystallography together with theoretical calculation; their formation mechanism was proposed to be a substitution—polycondensation—ring-closure process based on experimental observations. All of these clusters are rather robust (anti-reductive and anti-oxidative) owing to their tiara-like structures with large HOMO-LUMO gaps. Finally, the optical and electrochemical evolution with the increase of ring size was investigated, and it is found that both optical and electrochemical gaps have a “turning point” at a size corresponding to n = 8 for [Pd(SR)₂]_n nanoclusters.
