Tuning Excited States of Bipyridyl Platinum(II) Chromophores with π-Bonded Catecholate Organometallic Ligands: Synthesis, Structures, TD-DFT Calculations, and Photophysical Properties

Cyclometalated Rhodium and Iridium Complexes Containing Masked Catecholates: Synthesis, Structure, Electrochemistry, and Luminescence Properties

Two neutral cyclometalated rhodium and iridium coordination assemblies [(F2ppy)₂M(η-Cat)], M = Rh, (2) and M = Ir, (3) (F2ppy: 2,4-difluorophenylpyridine), displaying a masked catecholate (η-Cat = η-O∧O) are described. The catecholate ligand is π-bonded to an organometallic Cp*Ru(II) moiety. The latter brings stability to the whole system in solution and suppresses the formation of the related paramagnetic semiquinone complex. The determination of the molecular structure of the iridium complex [(F2ppy)₂Ir(η-Cat)] (3) corroborates the formation of the target compound and reveals the generation of a rare two-dimensional (2D) honeycomb supramolecular architecture in the solid state, in which the Δ-enantiomer self-assembles with the Λ-enantiomer through encoded π-π interactions among individual units. The electrochemistry of complexes 2 and 3 was investigated and showed that reduction occurs at very negative potentials (∼-2.2 V versus saturated calomel electrode (SCE)), while oxidation of the cyclometalated Rh and Ir centers occurs at 0.8 and 0.86 V. In contrast to complexes with 1,2-dioxolene chelates, which are nonemissive, the heterodinuclear diamagnetic complexes 2 and 3 were found to be emissive at room temperature both in solution and in the solid state. Moreover, at 77 K in a solid state, both compounds display opposite emission behavior, for instance, complex 3 displays a blue-shifted emission, while rhodium compound 2 exhibits red-shifted emission to lower energy.

New luminescent tetracoordinate boron complexes: an in-depth experimental and theoretical characterisation and their application in OLEDs

Immobilizing a π-Conjugated Catecholato Framework on Surfaces of SiO2 Insulator Films via a One-Atom Anchor of a Platinum Metal Center to Modulate Organic Transistor Performance

Chemical modification of insulating material surfaces is an important methodology to improve the performance of organic field-effect transistors (OFETs). However, few redox-active self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) have been constructed on gate insulator film surfaces, in contrast to the numerous SAMs formed on many types of conducting electrodes. In this study, we report a new approach to introduce a π-conjugated organic fragment in close proximity to an insulating material surface via a transition metal center acting as a one-atom anchor. On the basis of the reported coordination chemistry of a catecholato complex of Pt(II) in solution, we demonstrate that ligand exchange can occur on an insulating material surface, affording SAMs on the SiO₂ surface derived from a newly synthesized Pt(II) complex containing a benzothienobenzothiophene (BTBT) framework in the catecholato ligand. The resultant SAMs were characterized in detail by water contact angle measurements, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, and cyclic voltammetry. The SAMs served as good scaffolds of π-conjugated pillars for forming thin films of a well-known organic semiconductor C8-BTBT (2,7-dioctyl[1]benzothieno[3,2-b][1]benzothiophene), accompanied by the engagements of the C8-BTBT molecules with the SAMs containing the common BTBT framework at the first layer on SiO₂. OFETs containing the SAMs displayed improved performance in terms of hole mobility and onset voltage, presumably because of the unique interfacial structure between the organic semiconducting and inorganic insulating layers. These findings provide important insight into creating new elaborate interfaces through installing coordination chemistry in solution to solid surfaces, as well as OFET design by considering the compatibility between SAMs and organic semiconductors.

Luminescent halogen-substituted 2-(N-arylimino)pyrrolyl boron complexes: the internal heavy-atom effect

Boron complexes of aromatic 5-substituted iminopyrrolyl ligands: synthesis, structure, and luminescence properties

A group of new mononuclear boron chelate compounds [BPh₂{κ²N,N'-5-R-NC₄H₂-2-C(H)[double bond, length as m-dash]N-Ar}] (R = Ar = C₆H₅7; R = C₆H₅, Ar = 2,6-iPr₂C₆H₃8; R = Anthracen-9-yl (Anthr), Ar = C₆H₅9; R = Anthr, Ar = 2,6-iPr₂C₆H₃10) were synthesized via the reaction of B(C₆H₅)₃ with the corresponding 5-substituted 2-(N-arylformimino)pyrrole ligand precursors 3-6. These complexes were prepared in order to evaluate the luminescence potential derived from the substitution of the position 5 of the pyrrolyl ring with an aromatic group. Compounds 7-10 were photophysically characterized in solution and in the solid state. The 5-phenyl-2-iminopyrrolyl-BPh₂ complexes 7 and 8 are blue emitters and have enhanced photoluminescence quantum yields in the solid state (Φ_PL) up to 0.95, whereas the 5-anthracenyl derivatives 9 and 10 have green-bluish fluorescence and a Φ_PL of 0.49 and 0.24, respectively. DFT and TDDFT studies were performed, considering the effect of solvent and dispersion, in order to show how the geometries of compounds 7-10 changed from the ground to the excited state, to assign electronic transitions, and to rationalize the observed luminescence. These materials were applied in organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), with various device structures, the best showing an external quantum efficiency of 2.75% together with a high luminance of 23 530 cd m^-2.

New π-extended catecholato complexes of Pt(ii) and Pd(ii) containing a benzothienobenzothiophene (BTBT) moiety: synthesis, electrochemical behavior and charge transfer properties

Benzothienobenzothiophene (BTBT) and derivatives have received increasing attention as organic field-effect transistor materials and molecular conductors. This report presents the first synthesis of metal complexes involving a BTBT moiety, which was achieved by complexation of 2,2'-bipyridyl complexes of Pt(ii) and Pd(ii) with dihydroxy-substituted BTBT (1) as a new π-extended catecholato ligand (^tBu₂Bpy = 4,4'-di-tert-butyl-2,2'-dipyridyl). The resulting complexes M(^tBu₂Bpy)(O₂BTBT) (M = Pt (3Pt) and Pd (3Pd)) were characterized by UV-vis spectroscopy, density functional theory (DFT) calculations, and cyclic voltammetry. The electron donating ability of BTBT was substantially enhanced upon including two oxygen substituents followed by metal coordination. This enabled chemical oxidation of 3Pt and 3Pd with a mild chemical oxidant (ferrocenium hexafluorophosphate) and formation of the one-electron-oxidized state. While 3Pt and 3Pd exhibited an absorption band originating from a catecholate → Bpy ligand-to-ligand charge transfer transition typical of this class of catecholato complexes, the radical cations exhibited a unique π-π* intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) transition absorption in which the π and π* orbitals were the newly incorporated benzothienothiophene-based donor and semiquinonato-based acceptor, respectively. The BTBT⁺ skeleton was electronically divided into two sites by the present chemical modification. The ICT properties of the complexes were found to be modulated by varying the metal ions. These findings offer a new approach to molecular design for (semi)conducting materials using optical properties.

Luminescent Cyclometalated Platinum Complexes with π-Bonded Catecholate Organometallic Ligands

A series of cyclometalated platinum(II) complexes of the type [(ppy)Pt(L_M)]ⁿ⁺ (n = 0, 1) with π-bonded catecholates acting as organometallic ligands (L_M) have been prepared and characterized by analytical techniques. In addition, the structures of two complexes of the series were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The packing shows the formation of a 1D supramolecular assembly generated by d_Pt-π_Cp* interactions among individual units. All complexes are luminescent in the solid state and in solution media. The results of photophysics have been rationalized by means of density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT investigations.

BODIPY-Appended 2-(2-Pyridyl)benzimidazole Platinum(II) Catecholates for Mitochondria-Targeted Photocytotoxicity

Platinum(II) complexes of the type [Pt(L)(cat)] (1 and 2), in which H2 cat is catechol and L represents two 2-(2-pyridyl)benzimidazole ligands with 4,4-difluoro-4-bora-3a,4a-diaza-s-indacene (BODIPY) pendants, were synthesized to achieve mitochondria-targeted photocytotoxicity. The complexes showed strong absorptions in the range λ=510-540 nm. Complex 1 exhibited intense emission at λ=525 nm in 1 % DMSO/water solution (fluorescence quantum yield of 0.06). Nanosecond transient absorption spectral features indicated an enhanced population of the triplet excited state in di-iodinated complex 2. The generation of singlet oxygen by complex 2 upon exposure to visible light, as evidenced from experiments with 1,3-diphenylisobenzofuran, is suitable for photodynamic therapy because of the remarkable photosensitizing ability. The complexes resulted in excellent photocytotoxicity in HaCaT cells (half maximal inhibitory concentration IC50 ≈3 μm, λ=400-700 nm, light dose=10 J cm(-2) ), but they remained non-toxic in the dark (IC50 >100 μm). Confocal microscopy images of 1 and Pt estimation from isolated mitochondria showed colocalization of the complexes in the mitochondria. Complex 2 displayed generation of reactive oxygen species induced by visible light, disruption of the mitochondrial membrane potential, and apoptosis.
