Luminescent Gold and Silver Complexes with the Monophosphane 1-(PPh2)-2-Me-C2B10H10 and Their Conversion to Gold Micro- and Superstructured Materials

From alkaline earth to coinage metal carboranyls

The β-diketiminato calcium and magnesium complexes, [(BDI)MgnBu] and [(BDI)CaH]2 (BDI = HC{C(Me)NDipp}2; Dipp = 2,6-di-isopropylphenyl), react with ortho-carborane (o-C2B10H12) to provide the respective [(BDI)Ae(o-C2B10H11)] (Ae = Mg or Ca) complexes. While the lighter group 2 species is a monomer with magnesium in a distorted trigonal planar environment, the heavier analogue displays a puckered geometry at calcium in the solid state due to Ca⋯H-B intermolecular interactions. These secondary contacts are, however, readily disrupted upon addition of THF to provide the 4-coordinate monomer, [(BDI)Ca(THF)(o-C2B10H11)]. [(BDI)Mg(o-C2B10H11)] was reacted with [NHCIPrMCl] (NHCIPr = 1,3-bis(isopropyl)imidazol-2-ylidene; M = Cu, Ag, Au) to provide [NHCIPrM(o-C2B10H11)], rare C-bonded examples of coinage metal derivatives of unsubstituted (o-C2B10H11)- and confirming the alkaline earth compounds as viable reagents for the transmetalation of the carboranyl anion.

A trigonal coordination of Au(I) phosphane complexes stabilized by O-H ⋯ X (X = Cl-, Br-, I-) interactions

In this work, we show that intramolecular hydrogen bonding can be used to stabilize tri-coordinated phosphane-gold(I) complexes. Two molecular structures of 2-(diphenylphosphino)benzoic acid (L) coordinated to a gold(I) atom were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The linear L-Au-Br shows a standard linear coordination and dimerizes via hydrogen bonds of the carboxylic acid. Upon addition of two additional phosphane ligands the complex [L3Au]X is formed which is stabilized by three intramolecular -C(O)O-H … X hydrogen bonds as proven by the X-ray structure of the respective chlorido-complex. X-ray powder diffractograms suggest the same structure also for X- = Br- and I-.

Tuning the photophysical properties of carboranyl luminophores by closo- to nido-carborane conversion and application to OFF-ON fluoride sensing

A family of closo-carborane-appended luminophores (closo-OXD1-2 and closo-DPS1-2) in which 2-R-o-carboranes (R = H, Me) are attached to the diphenyl-1,3,4-oxadiazole (OXD) or diphenyl-sulfone (DPS) acceptor groups were prepared and characterized. Deboronation of the closo-carborane cage produced the corresponding nido-carboranyl luminophores (nido-OXD1-2 and nido-DPS1-2). Whereas the closo-compounds were poorly emissive in THF (ΦPL < 0.01), the nido-luminophores exhibited an intense fluorescence with good quantum yields (ΦPL = 0.1-0.45). Electrochemical studies showed that while the closo-OXD and -DPS compounds displayed only carborane-centred, quasi-reversible reduction, the nido-compounds exhibited the typical features for nido-carborane-centred, irreversible oxidation and acceptor-centred, reversible reduction. Theoretical studies suggested that while the 1ππ* state of closo-compounds is nonemissive due to the contribution of closo-carborane to the LUMO in the S1 excited state, the intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) state from the nido-carborane to acceptor moieties in nido-compounds leads to an efficient fluorescence. Finally, THF solutions of closo-OXD1 and -DPS1 showed strong fluorescence upon the addition of fluoride anions under mild heating, but were intact to other anions, including cyanide, allowing the selective OFF-ON fluorescence sensing of fluoride.

Photoluminescence and electroluminescence of cationic PtAu2 heterotrinuclear complexes with aromatic acetylides

Cationic PtAu₂ heterometallic complexes are used as phosphorescent emitters for highly efficient electroluminescent OLEDs through a solution process with the highest current efficiency of 51.7 cd A⁻¹ and external quantum efficiency of 14.5%.

Boron clusters in luminescent materials

In recent times, luminescent materials with tunable emission properties have found applications in almost all aspects of modern material sciences. Any discussion on the recent developments in luminescent materials would be incomplete if one does not account for the versatile photophysical features of boron containing compounds. Apart from triarylboranes and tetra-coordinate borate dyes, luminescent materials consisting of boron clusters have also found immense interest in recent times. Recent studies have unveiled the opportunities hidden within boranes, carboranes and metalloboranes, etc. as active constituents of luminescent materials. From simple illustrations of luminescence, to advanced applications in LASERs, OLEDs and bioimaging, etc., the unique features of such compounds and their promising versatility have already been established. In this review, recent revelations about the excellent photophysical properties of such materials are discussed.
