Abstract
A series of asymmetric, homoleptic Fe(II) compounds based on the facially-binding tridentate ligand N-methyl-1,1-di(pyridin-2-yl)Cn-amine (LCn) (Cn = butyl, hexyl, octyl, decyl, dodecyl, tetradecyl and hexadecyl alkyl chains) with formula [FeII(LCn)2](X)2·solvate, where n = 4, 14 and X = BF4 (1C4 and 1C14) or n = 6, 8, 10, 12, 16 and X = CF3SO3 (1C6-1C12 and 1C16), are reported. Complexes 1C6 to 1C16 pack in crystalline bilayers in the solid state, forming hydrophobic and hydrophilic regions between adjacent layers of complexes. The combination of short Fe-N bond distances (∼2.00 Å) and SQUID magnetic susceptibility measurements show that the complexes are in the low-spin state across all measured temperature ranges. Differential scanning calorimetry confirmed phase transitions occur in compounds 1C6, 1C12, 1C14 and 1C16 upon heating from room temperature. The lack of any spin transitions and thermal stability conferred by thermogravimetric analysis over this temperature range suggest that these transitions are crystallographic in nature. 1H NMR studies show that the low-spin Fe(II) centres undergo partial conversion to paramagnetic species in solution. UV-vis spectroscopy in a range of common organic solvents show that the central Fe ions remain in the +2 oxidation state, suggesting that the increase in magnetic susceptibility in solution is likely due to partial spin-crossover, or due to speciation, in which a proportion of the compounds are high-spin Fe(II) complexes.

Abstract
Designing and integrating Fe(iii)-based spin crossover (SCO) complexes onto substrates remains a challenging goal with only a handful of examples reported. In this work, we successfully synthesized and characterized three [Fe(qsal-OR)2]NO3 (qsal-OR = 5-alkoxy-2-[(8-quinolylimino)methyl]phenolate) complexes, in which R = C12H251, C16H332, and C22H453 to explore the impact of alkyl chain on the modulation of SCO activity and potential for self-assembly on a glass surface. The SCO is found to be gradual and incomplete in all cases, with the LS state more stabilised as the alkyl group shortens. We also demonstrate that all complexes form stable Langmuir films and achieve good transfer ratios to the glass surface, with 2 being the best in terms of stability. This paves the way for the SCO modulation of complexes in this class and the development of SCO devices.

Abstract
Two new salts of a mononuclear tripodal Fe(II) complex were prepared, using ClO4- and Cl-. The ClO4- sample (1) remained HS at low temperatures, similar to the previously reported BF4- analogue. Crystallising with the Cl- anion (2) led to a markedly different crystal packing arrangement, and engendered SCO activity. This has been correlated to the lower crystal packing density in 2 and the coordination complex conformational differences arising due to the packing motifs of 1 and 2. Further, solvent ordering effects have been proposed to facilitate spin transition behaviour in 2.

Abstract
Ferroelectric polymers are of great interest due to their intrinsic processing capabilities, superior to classic inorganic ferroelectric materials. For example, polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) and derivatives have been incorporated into multiple device architectures for information storage and transfer. Here we report an additional advantage of organic ferroelectrics as their flexibility allows for the preparation of composites with spin crossover (SCO) probes to tune their ferroelectric parameters by external stimuli. We demonstrate how the saturation polarization and coercive field of a ferroelectric [Fe(NH2trz)3](NO3)2/PVDF composite film depends on the spin state of the [Fe(NH2trz)3](NO3)2, opening a thermal hysteresis and delivering a ferroelectric material with a memory effect. This switching may now be used to tune the function of a device, adding additional information states to the elemental binary logic. Additional evidence of the synergy between the two components of these films was also found in the glass transition of the PVDF component that induces small changes in the paramagnetic component.

Abstract
Fluorogenic chemosensors using pyridoxal derivatized ligands as fluorophore is a rapidly growing field of research. Here we report a new Fe(III) complex, [Fe(HBala-pydx)(Bala-pydx)] (H2Bala-pydx is the Schiff base of pyridoxal with beta-alanine), which can serve as a sensitive and selective turn-on fluorescent sensor for the detection of cyanide(CN-) in micromolar concentrations (L.O.D. is 1.134 µM), via the ligand displacement approach, in aqueous-acetonitrile medium. The Fe(III) complex is adequately characterized by analytical and spectroscopic methods along with X-ray crystal structure determination.

Abstract
1,4-Di(1,2,3-triazol-1-yl)butane (bbtr) forms a two-dimensional (2D) coordination polymer (1) in a reaction with iron(II) triflate. In the crystal lattice there are two crystallographically unique iron(II) ions surrounded octahedrally by a 1,2,3-triazole ring coordinated through nitrogen atoms N3. Single crystal X-ray diffraction studies revealed that spin crossover for each crystallographically independent iron(II) ion proceeds at a different temperature (T1/2(Fe1) = 201 K; T1/2(Fe2) = 216 K), while the magnetic measurements showed that there is one step, complete thermally induced spin crossover (T1/2 = 205 K). Complex 1 undergoes, with time, single crystal-to-single crystal transformation (SCSC) to the converted system (1c) from the R3̄ to the P63 space group, accompanied by significant changes in the lattice parameter c (a shortening of approximately one-third) and consequently unit cell volume. Structural transformation is associated with rebuilding of the polymeric layer as well as the anion network, which is reflected in the results of Mössbauer studies. In the polymorphic system (1c) there are three crystallographically independent iron(II) ions. The temperature dependence results for magnetic susceptibility indicated complete, one-step spin crossover very similar to that of 1; however, single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies of 1c revealed that spin crossover for each crystallographically independent iron(II) ion occurs in a different manner, revealing three elementary stages (T1/2(Fe1) = 200 K; T1/2(Fe2) = 212 K, T1/2(Fe3) = 214 K).

Abstract
The use of liquid crystals for the fabrication of displays incorporated in technological devices (TVs, calculators, screens of eBook's, tablets, watches) demonstrates the relevance that these materials have had in our way of living. However, society evolves, and improved devices are looked for as we create a more efficient and safe technology. In this context, metallomesogens can behave as multifunctional materials because they can combine the fluidic state of the mesophases with properties such as photo and electroluminescence, which offers new exciting possibilities in the field of optoelectronics, energy, environment, and even biomedicine. Herein, it has been established the role of the molecular geometry induced by the metal center in metallomesogens to achieve the self-assembly required in the liquid-crystalline mesophase. Likewise, the effect of the coordination environment in metallomesogens has been further analyzed because of its importance to induce mesomorphism. The structural analysis has been combined with an in-depth discussion of the properties of these materials, including their current and potential future applications. This review will provide a solid background to stimulate the development of novel and attractive metallomesogens that allow designing improved optoelectronic and microelectronic components. Additionally, nanoscience and nanotechnology could be used as a tool to approach the design of nanosystems based on luminescent metallomesogens for use in bioimaging or drug delivery.

Abstract
Three new alkyl chain substituted complexes [Fe(H2Bpz2)2(Cn-bipy)] (pz = pyrazolyl, Cn-bipy = bipyridine alkyl chain diester, n = 3 (3), 4 (4) and 5 (5)) show versatile spin state switching behaviour with different "tail" lengths as revealed by structural and magnetic analyses. The most striking phenomenon is observed for 5 which undergoes an abrupt spin transition accompanied by thermal hysteresis of ca. 10 K, which is attributed to crystal packing effects derived from the competition between ππ and C-HO interactions. Interestingly, each of the complexes exhibits similar gradual and complete spin crossover in methanol solution with a transition temperature around 249 K, as deduced from temperature-dependent UV-vis spectroscopy. This highlights the differences between the solid state (ligand field; crystal packing) and solution (ligand field; solvation) effects on spin crossover. This work demonstrates that the length of the complex's alkyl chain substituents on the complex can have a large impact on the transition temperature and profile of solid state spin crossover, offering a potential path to the fabrication of soft matter spin crossover materials.

Abstract
Ferroelectric spin crossover (SCO) behavior is demonstrated to occur in the cobalt(II) complex, [Co(FPh-terpy)2 ](BPh4 )2 ⋅3ac (1⋅3 ac; FPh-terpy=4'-((3-fluorophenyl)ethynyl)-2,2':6',2''-terpyridine) and is dependent on the degree of 180° flip-flop motion of the ligand's polar fluorophenyl ring. Single crystal X-ray structures at several temperatures confirmed the flip-flop motion of fluorobenzene ring and also gave evidence for the SCO behavior with the latter behavior also confirmed by magnetic susceptibility measurements. The molecular motion of the fluorobenzene ring was also revealed using solid-state 19 F NMR spectroscopy. Thus the SCO behavior is accompanied by the flip-flop motion of the fluorobenzene ring, leading to destabilization of the low spin cobalt(II) state; with the magnitude of rotation able to be controlled by an electric field. This first example of spin-state conversion being dependent on the molecular motion of a ligand-appended fluorobenzene ring in a SCO cobalt(II) compound provides new insight for the design of a new category of molecule-based magnetoelectric materials.

Abstract
These two compounds are isomorphous but show different spin-state behaviour on cooling. This may be influenced by the packing of alkyl vs. alkynyl chains in the solid state.

Structural Evidence of Spin State Selection and Spin Crossover Behavior of Tripodal Schiff Base Complexes of tris(2-aminoethyl)amine and Related Tripodal Amines. MAGNETOCHEMISTRY 2020. Abstract
A review of the tripodal Schiff base (SB) complexes of tris(2-aminoethyl)amine, Nap(CH2CH 2NH2)3 (tren), and a few closely related tripodal amines with Cr(II), Mn(III) (d4), Mn(II), Fe(III) (d5), Fe(II) (d6), and Co(II) (d7) is provided. Attention is focused on examination of key structural features, the M-Nimine, M-Namine, or M-O and M-Nap bond distances and Nimine-M-N(O) bite and C-Nap-C angles and how these values correlate with spin state selection and spin crossover (SCO) behavior. A comparison of these experimental values with density functional theory calculated values is also given. The greatest number, 132, of complexes is observed with cationic mononuclear iron(II) in a N6 donor set, Fe(II)N6. The dominance of two spin states, high spin (HS) and low spin (LS), in these systems is indicated by the bimodal distribution of histogram plots of Fe(II)-Nimine and Fe(II)-Nazole/pyridine bond distances and of Nimine–Fe(II)-Nazole/pyridine and C-Nap-C bond angles. The values of the two maxima, corresponding to LS and HS states, in each of these histograms agree closely with the theoretical values. The iron(II)-Nimine and iron(II)-Nazole/pyridine bond distances correlate well for these complexes. Examples of SCO complexes of this type are tabulated and a few of the 20 examples are discussed that exhibit interesting features. There are only a few mononuclear iron(III) cationic complexes and one is SCO. In addition, a significant number of supramolecular complexes of these ligands that exhibit SCO, intervalence, and chiral recognition are discussed. A summary is made regarding the current state of this area of research and possible new avenues to explore based on analysis of the present data.

Abstract
We report the syntheses and magnetic property characterizations of four mononuclear cobalt(ii) complex salts featuring a tripodal iminopyridine ligand with external anion receptor groups, [CoL5-ONHtBu]X2 (X = Cl (1), Br (2), I (3) and ClO4 (4)). While all four salts exhibit anion binding through pendant amide moieties, only in the case of 1 is field-induced slow relaxation of magnetisation observed, whereas in the other salts this phenomenon is absent at the limits of our instrumentation. The effect of chloride inducing a seventh Co-N interaction and concomitant structural distortion is hypothesized as the origin of the observed dynamic magnetic properties observed in 1. Ab initio computational studies carried out on a 7-coordinate Co(ii) model species survey the complex interplay of coordination number and trigonal twisting on the sign and magnitude of the axial anisotropy parameter (D), and identify structural features whose distortions can trigger large switches in the sign and magnitude of magnetic anisotropy.

Abstract
Ferroelectric liquid crystals (FLCs) are fascinating functional materials that have a remnant and electrically invertible polarization. To date, typical FLCs have been mainly realized by molecular design such as the incorporation of chirality into a given molecular structure. Here, we report for the first time ferroelectricity induced by spin transition associated with a crystal - liquid crystal phase transition in achiral molecules. Iron(ii) metallomesogens incorporating alkyl chains of type [Fe(3C n -bzimpy)2](BF4)2 (n = 8 (1), 10 (2), 12 (3), 14 (4), 16 (5) and 18 (6); bzimpy = 2,6-bis(benzimidazol-2'-yl)pyridine) that exhibit spin crossover (SCO) phenomena have been synthesized. Compounds 5 and 6 were each demonstrated to show SCO behaviour along with the occurrence of a phase transition between the crystalline (Cr) state and corresponding chiral smectic C (SmC*) state. The distortion of the coordination sphere in the high spin state is seen to trigger the generation of the SmC* state. The liquid crystalline compounds do not display ferroelectric behaviour in their Cr state but do exhibit ferroelectric hysteresis loops in their SmC* state. Ferroelectric switching was clearly confirmed by second harmonic generation (SHG) experiments involving the respective phases. These findings will undoubtedly lead to new strategies for the design of new FLCs based on metal-centred spin transitions.

Abstract
A multistable spin crossover (SCO) molecular alloy system [Fe1-x M x (nBu-im)3(tren)](P1-y As y F6)2 (M = ZnII, NiII; (nBu-im)3(tren) = tris(n-butyl-imidazol(2-ethylamino))amine) has been synthesized and characterized. By controlling the composition of this isomorphous series, two cooperative thermally induced SCO events featuring distinct critical temperatures (T c) and hysteresis widths (ΔT c, memory) can be selected at will. The pristine derivative 100As (x = 0, y = 1) displays a strong cooperative two-step SCO and two reversible structural phase transitions (PTs). The low temperature PTLT and the SCO occur synchronously involving conformational changes of the ligand's n-butyl arms and two different arrangements of the AsF6 - anions [T1c = 174 K (ΔT1c = 17 K), T2c = 191 K (ΔT2c = 23 K) (scan rate 2 K min-1)]. The high-temperature PTHT takes place in the high-spin state domain and essentially involves rearrangement of the AsF6 - anions [TPTc = 275 K (ΔTPTc = 16 K)]. This behavior strongly contrasts with that of the homologous 100P [x = 0, y = 0] derivative where two separate cooperative one-step SCO can be selected by controlling the kinetics of the coupled PTLT at ambient pressure: (i) one at low temperatures, T c = 122 K (ΔT c = 9 K), for temperature scan rates (>1 K min-1) (memory channel A) where the structural modifications associated with PTLS are inhibited; (ii) the other centered at T c = 155 K (ΔT c = 41 K) for slower temperature scan rates ≤0.1 K min-1 (memory channel B). These two SCO regimes of the 100P derivative transform reversibly into the two-step SCO of 100As upon application of hydrostatic pressure (ca. 0.1 GPa) denoting the subtle effect of internal chemical pressure on the SCO behavior. Precise control of AsF6 - ↔ PF6 - substitution, and hence of the PTLT kinetics, selectively selects the memory channel B of 100P when x = 0 and y ≈ 0.7. Meanwhile, substitution of FeII with ZnII or NiII [x ≈ 0.2, y = 0] favors the low temperature memory channel A at any scan rate. This intriguing interplay between PT, SCO and isomorphous substitution was monitored by single crystal and powder X-ray diffractometries, and magnetic and calorimetric measurements.

Abstract
In the complex cation of the title compound, [Fe(C27H41N10O3)](PF6)2, the tripodal tris-{4-[1-(2-meth-oxy-eth-yl)imidazol-2-yl]-3-aza-but-3-en-yl}amine ligand is coordinated to an FeII ion through the nitro-gen atoms of three imidazole and three imino groups. The Fe atom exhibits a distorted octa-hedral geometry. In the crystal, l and d anti-podes are arranged in layers in the bc plane. Weak C⋯F and C-H⋯F/O contacts exist between the ligands of the complex cation and the PF6 - anions, generating a three-dimensional network. At 120 K, the FeII ion is in a low-spin state, with an average Fe-N bond distance of 1.970 (2) Å. On heating, the FeII ion converts to the high-spin state, as demonstrated by magnetic susceptibility measurements.

Abstract
Chelate coordination of non-symmetrical didentate pyrazine-benzimidazole (L1) or pyridine-benzimidazole (L2) N-donor ligands around divalent iron in acetonitrile produces stable homoleptic triple-helical spin crossover [Fe(Lk)3 ]2+ complexes existing as mixtures of meridional (C1 -symmetry) and facial (C3 -symmetry) isomers in slow exchange on the NMR timescale. The speciation deviates from the expected statistical ratio mer/fac=3:1, a trend assigned to the thermodynamic trans-influence, combined with solvation effects. Consequently, the observed spin state FeII low-spin ↔FeII high-spin equilibria occurring in [Fe(Lk)3 ]2+ refer to mixtures of complexes in solution, an issue usually not considered in this field, but which limits rational structure-properties correlations. Taking advantage of the selective and quantitative formation of isostructural facial isomers in non-constrained related spin crossover d-f helicates (HHH)-[LnFe(Lk)3 ]5+ (Ln is a trivalent lanthanide, Lk=L5, L6), we propose a novel strategy for assigning pertinent thermodynamic driving forces to each spin crossover triple-helical isomer. The different enthalpic contributions to the spin state equilibrium found in mer-[Fe(Lk)3 ]2+ and fac-[Fe(Lk)3 ]2+ reflect the Fe-N bond strengths dictated by the trans-influence, whereas a concomitant solvent-based entropic contribution reinforces the latter effect and results in systematic shifts of the spin crossover transitions toward higher temperature in the facial isomers.

Abstract
While the forces responsible for the chelate effect are well-established in coordination chemistry, the origin and implementation of the related thermodynamic trans influence remains debatable. This work illustrates a simple approach for quantifying this effect in labile pseudo-octahedral [Zn(Lk)3](2+) complexes lacking stereochemical preferences (Lk = L1–L4 are unsymmetrical didentate α,α′-diimine ligands). In line with statistics, the triply degenerated meridional isomers mer-[Zn(Lk)3](2+) are stabilized by 0.8 ≤ ΔGexch(mer→fac) ≤ 4.2 kJ/mol over their nondegenerated facial analogues fac-[Zn(Lk)3](2+) and therefore display no apparent trans influence at room temperature. However, the dissection of the free energy terms into opposite enthalpic (favoring the facial isomers) and entropic (favoring the meridional isomers) contributions reveals a trans influence assigned to solvation processes occurring in polar solvents. Altogether, the thermodynamic trans influence operating in [Zn(α,α′-diimine)3](2+) complexes is 1–2 orders of magnitude smaller than the chelate effect. A weak templating effect provided by a noncovalent lanthanide tripod is thus large enough to produce the wanted facial isomer at room temperature.
