Flexible Coordination of Diphosphine Ligands Leading to cis and trans Pd(0), Pd(II), and Rh(I) Complexes

Platinum Assisted Tandem P-C Bond Cleavage and P-N Bond Formation in Amide Functionalized Bisphosphine o-Ph2PC6H4C(O)N(H)C6H4PPh2-o: Synthesis, Mechanistic, and Catalytic Studies

The reactions of amide functionalized bisphosphine o-Ph₂PC₆H₄C(O)N(H)C₆H₄PPh₂-o (1) with platinum salts are described. Treatment of 1 with [Pt(COD)Cl₂] yielded a chelate complex, [PtCl₂{o-Ph₂PC₆H₄C(O)N(H)C₆H₄PPh₂-o}κ²-P,P] (2), which on subsequent treatment with LiHMDS formed a novel 1,2-azaphospholene-phosphine complex [Pt(C₆H₅)Cl{o-C₆H₄{C(O)N(o-PPh₂(C₆H₄))P(Ph)}}κ²-P,P] (3) involving a tandem P-C bond cleavage and P-N bond formation. The same complex 3 on passing dry HCl gas afforded the dichloro complex [PtCl₂{o-C₆H₄{C(O)N(o-PPh₂(C₆H₄))P(Ph)}}κ²-P,P] (5). Complex 2 upon refluxing in toluene or treatment of 1 with [Pt(COD)Cl₂] in the presence of a base at room temperature resulted in the pincer complex [PtCl{o-Ph₂PC₆H₄C(O)N(C₆H₄PPh₂-o)}κ³-P,N,P] (4). Reaction of 1 with [Pt(COD)ClMe] at room temperature also afforded the pincer complex [PtMe{o-Ph₂PC₆H₄C(O)N(C₆H₄PPh₂-o)}κ³-P,N,P] (6). Mechanistic studies on 1,2-azaphospholene formation showed the reductive elimination of LiCl to form a phosphonium salt that readily adds one of the P-C bonds oxidatively to the in situ generated Pt⁰ species to form a chelate complex 3. The analogous palladium complex [PdCl₂{o-C₆H₄{C(O)N(o-PPh₂(C₆H₄))P(Ph)}}κ²-P,P] (7) showed excellent catalytic activity toward N-alkylation of amines with alcohols with a very low catalyst loading (0.05 mol %), and the methodology is very efficient toward the gram-scale synthesis of many N-alkylated amines.

P,N-Chelated Gold(III) Complexes: Structure and Reactivity

Gold(III) complexes are versatile catalysts offering a growing number of new synthetic transformations. Our current understanding of the mechanism of homogeneous gold(III) catalysis is, however, limited, with that of phosphorus-containing complexes being hitherto underexplored. The ease of phosphorus oxidation by gold(III) has so far hindered the use of phosphorus ligands in the context of gold(III) catalysis. We present a method for the generation of P,N-chelated gold(III) complexes that circumvents ligand oxidation and offers full counterion control, avoiding the unwanted formation of AuCl₄^-. On the basis of NMR spectroscopic, X-ray crystallographic, and density functional theory analyses, we assess the mechanism of formation of the active catalyst and of gold(III)-mediated styrene cyclopropanation with propargyl ester and intramolecular alkoxycyclization of 1,6-enyne. P,N-chelated gold(III) complexes are demonstrated to be straightforward to generate and be catalytically active in synthetically useful transformations of complex molecules.

Heterobimetallic Pd-K carbene complexes via one-electron reductions of palladium radical carbenes

Heterobimetallic Pd-K carbenes featuring Pd-C_carbene-K moieties were synthesized via an unprecedented sequential substitution/reduction reaction from a radical precursor, [{PC˙(sp²)P} ^tBuPdI] ([PC(sp²)P] ^tBu = bis[2-(di-iso-propylphosphino)-4-tert-butylphenyl]methylene). Polymeric structures were observed in the solid state for the heterobimetallic compounds that can be interrupted in the presence of a donor solvent.

Steric and Electronic Influences of Buchwald-Type Alkyl-JohnPhos Ligands

The electron-donating and steric properties of Buchwald-type ligands ([1,1'-biphenyl-2-yl]dialkylphosphine; R-JohnPhos, where R = Me, Et, (i)Pr, Cy, (t)Bu) were determined. The π-acidity and σ-donating properties of the R-JohnPhos ligands were quantified using a Cotton-Kraihanzel analysis of the Cr(0)(CO)5(R-JohnPhos) complexes. Somewhat surprisingly, the σ-donating abilities of the R-JohnPhos ligands follow the trend (t)Bu-JohnPhos < Et-JohnPhos < (i)Pr-JohnPhos < Cy-JohnPhos ≪ Me-JohnPhos. This ordering is proposed to arise from competition between the intrinsic electron-donating ability of the R groups (Me < Et < (i)Pr ≈ Cy < (t)Bu) and steric interactions (front and back strain) that decrease the electron-donating ability of the phosphine. X-ray crystallographic data of 22 metal complexes (general forms: trans-Cr(0)(CO)4(PR3)2, Pd(0)(PR3)2(η(2)-dba), and trans-Pd(II)(Cl)2(PR3)2) were also analyzed to help explain the electronic trends measured for the R-JohnPhos ligands. The R-JohnPhos ligands are exceptionally sensitive to back strain in comparison to typical phosphines, and the strong σ-donating ability of the Methyl-JohnPhos ligand is attributed to its ability to avoid both front strain and back strain. Consequently, the -PMe2 moiety allows for very short phosphorus-metal bond distances. Because of the sterically dominating o-biphenyl and close phosphorus-metal bond distances, MeJPhos maintains a large overall steric profile that is actually larger than that of CyJPhos as measured by percent buried volume (%V(bur)). Overall, the -PMe2 moiety is a powerful way to incorporate strong σ-donation into "designer" phosphines while retaining other advantageous structural and reactivity properties.

Cationic mono and dicarbonyl pincer complexes of rhodium and iridium to assess the donor properties of PCcarbeneP ligands

The donor properties of five different PC_carbeneP ligands are assessed by evaluation of the CO stretching frequencies in iridium(i) and rhodium(i) carbonyl cations.

Redox-induced umpolung of transition metal carbenes

Metal carbene complexes have been at the forefront of organic and organometallic synthesis and are instrumental in guiding future sustainable chemistry efforts. While classical Fischer and Schrock type carbenes have been intensely studied, compounds that do not fall within one of these categories have attracted attention only recently. In addition, applications of carbene complexes rarely take advantage of redox processes, which could open up a new dimension for their use in practical processes. Herein, we report an umpolung of a nucleophilic palladium carbene complex, [{PC(sp2)P} tBuPd(PMe3)] ({PC(sp2)P} tBu = bis[2-(di-iso-propylphosphino)-4-tert-butylphenyl]methylene), realized by successive one-electron oxidations that generated a cationic carbene complex, [{PC(sp2)P} tBuPdI]+, via a carbene radical, [{PC˙(sp2)P} tBuPdI]. An EPR spectroscopic study of [{PC˙(sp2)P} tBuPdI] indicated the presence of a ligand-centered radical, also supported by the results of reactions with 9,10-dihydroanthracene and PhSSPh. The cationic carbene complex shows electrophilic behavior toward nucleophiles such as NaH, p TolNHLi, PhONa, and PMe3, resulting from an inversion of the electronic character of the Pd-Ccarbene bond in [{PC(sp2)P} tBuPd(PMe3)]. The redox induced umpolung is reversible and unprecedented.

Palladium carbene complexes as persistent radicals

A series of palladium(ii) radical carbene complexes, [PC˙(sp2)P]PdI, [PC˙(sp2)P]PdBr, and [PC˙(sp2)P]PdCl (PC(sp3)H2P = bis[2-(di-iso-propylphosphino)-phenyl]methane), is described. Compound [PC˙(sp2)P]PdI dimerizes to {[PC(sp2)P]PdI}2 in the solid state, akin to the formation of Gomberg's dimer. While the bromo and the iodo derivatives could be obtained from the oxidation of [PC(sp2)P]Pd(PMe3) by the respective dihalogens, a halogen transfer reaction from CH2Cl2 was used for the formation of [PC˙(sp2)P]PdCl. The halogen transfer from CH2X2 (X = Cl, Br, I) could be used to obtain all three radical carbene palladium complexes and also allowed the isolation of [PC(CH2)P]Pd(PMe3), which is the result of methylene group transfer from CH2X2. Compound [PC(CH2)P]Pd(PMe3) was independently synthesized from [PC(CH3)HP]PdCl2, which contains a supporting ligand analogous to that of the radical carbene complexes but has one of the hydrogen atoms replaced by a methyl group. All three carbene radical species abstract a hydrogen from 9,10-dihydroanthracene or n Bu3SnH.

Frustrated Lewis pair-like reactions of nucleophilic palladium carbenes with B(C6F5)3

Nucleophilic palladium carbenes react with the strong Lewis acid B(C₆F₅)₃via remote nucleophilic attack at the para-carbon of the supporting ligand or C–F activation of B(C₆F₅)₃; these reactions indicate frustrated Lewis pair-like behaviour given the steric inaccessibility of the nucleophilic carbene center.

Crystal structure of catena-poly[[potassium-tri-μ-di-methyl-acetamide-κ(6) O:O] iodide]

A one-dimensional chain formed by potassium bridged by μ₂-O-di­methyl­acetamide is reported. This represents a small class of di­methyl­acetamide complexes with oxygen bridging two metal centers.

The structure of catena-poly[[potassium-tri-μ-di­methyl­acetamide-κ⁶O:O] iodide], {[K(C₄H₉NO)₃]I}_n, at 120 K has trigonal (P-3) symmetry. The structure adopts a linear chain motif parallel to the crystallographic c axis. Two crystallographically independent K⁺ cations are present in the asymmetric unit located on threefold rotoinversion axes at [0, 0, 0] and [0, 0, 1/2] and are bridged by the O atoms of the acetamide moiety. This is an example of a rare μ₂-bridging mode for di­methyl­acetamide O atoms. The iodide counter-ion resides on a threefold rotation axis in the channel formed by the [K(C₄H₉NO)]⁺ chains.
