Single-Molecule-Magnet Behavior in Mononuclear Homoleptic Tetrahedral Uranium(III) Complexes

Accessing a Highly Reducing Uranium(III) Complex through Cyclometalation

U(IV) cyclometalated complexes have shown rich reactivity, but their low oxidation state analogues still remain rare. Herein, we report the isolation of [K(2.2.2-cryptand)][UIII{N(SiMe3)2}2(κ2-C,N-CH2SiMe2NSiMe3)], 1, from the reduction of [UIII{N(SiMe)2}3] with KC8 and 2.2.2-cryptand at room temperature. Cyclic voltammetry studies demonstrate that 1 has a reduction potential similar to that of the previously reported [K(2.2.2-cryptand)][UII{N(SiMe)2}3] (Epc = -2.6 V versus Fc+/0 and Epc = -2.8 V versus Fc+/0, respectively). Complex 1, indeed, shows similar reducing abilities upon reactions with 4,4'-bipyridine, 2,2'-bipyridine, and 1-azidoadamantane. Interestingly, 1 was also found to be the first example of a mononuclear U(III) complex that is capable of reducing pyridine. In addition, it is shown that a wide variety of substrates can be inserted into the U-C bond, forming new U(III) metallacycles. These results highlight that cyclometalated U(III) complexes can serve as versatile precursors for a broad range of reactivity and for assembling a variety of novel chemical architectures.

In silico design criteria for high blocking barrier uranium (III) SIMs

A combination of DFT and ab initio CASSCF/PT2 calculations on U(III) fictitious models and numerous reported X-ray structures unveils several geometries from coordination number 1 to 12 that can be targeted to design potential U(III) SIMs with attractive barrier heights. Among the geometries studied, the T-shaped and capped pentagonal antiprism geometries yield values exceeding 1500 cm^-1 - a value that is elusive for any uranium SIMs.

Deciphering the Role of Symmetry and Ligand Field in Designing Three-Coordinate Uranium and Plutonium Single-Molecule Magnets

Actinide single-molecule magnets (SMMs) have gained paramount interest in molecular magnetism as they offer a larger barrier height of magnetization (U_eff) reversal compared to the lanthanide analogue, thanks to their greater metal-ligand covalency. However, the reported actinide SMMs to date yield a relatively smaller U_eff as there is no established design principle to enhance U_eff values. To address this issue, we have employed ab initio CASSCF/CASPT2/NEVPT2 calculations to study a series of three-coordinate U³⁺ and Pu³⁺ SMMs. To begin with, we have studied two experimentally characterized U³⁺ ion-field-induced SMMs, namely, planar [U{N(SiMe₂^tBu)₂}₃] (1) and pyramidal [U{N(SiMe₃)₂}₃] (2) complexes reported earlier. Both the complexes were found to stabilize m_J = |±1/2⟩ as the ground state with a very strong quantum tunneling of magnetization (QTM), rendering them unsuitable for SMMs. Our calculations reveal that in the pyramidal geometry (such as in 2), the energy of the 5f²6d¹ state is lowered compared to the planar geometry (as in 1), resulting in a slightly better SMM characteristic in the former. To unravel the effect of symmetry in magnetic properties, ab initio calculations were performed on two reported T-shaped complexes [U(NSiⁱPr₂)₂(I)] (3) and [U(NHAr^iPr6)₂I] (4, Ar^iPr6 = 2,6-(2,4,6-iPr₃C₆H₂)₂C₆H₃). Quite interestingly, m_J = |±9/2⟩ is found to be the ground state for both the complexes with a blocking barrier exceeding 900 cm^-1. Furthermore, to decipher the effect of the transuranic element in magnetic anisotropy, ab initio calculations were extended to the Pu analogue of 2, [Pu{N(SiMe₃)₂}₃] (5), which yields a record-breaking blocking barrier of ∼1933 cm^-1. Among the three-coordinate geometries studied, the pyramidal geometry was found to offer substantial magnetic anisotropy for Pu³⁺ ions, while a T-shaped geometry is best suited for U³⁺ ions. While the chosen theoretical protocols' overestimation of barrier height cannot be avoided, these values are still several orders of magnitude larger than the U_eff values reported for any actinide SMMs and unveil a design principle for superior three-coordinate actinide-based SMMs.

Assembling Diuranium Complexes in Different States of Charge with a Bridging Redox-Active Ligand

Radical-bridged diuranium complexes are desirable for their potential high exchange coupling and single molecule magnet (SMM) behavior, but remain rare. Here we report for the first time radical-bridged diuranium(iv) and diuranium(iii) complexes. Reaction of [U{N(SiMe₃)₂}₃] with 2,2′-bipyrimidine (bpym) resulted in the formation of the bpym-bridged diuranium(iv) complex [{((Me₃Si)₂N)₃U^IV}₂(μ-bpym²⁻)], 1. Reduction with 1 equiv. KC₈ reduces the complex, affording [K(2.2.2-cryptand)][{((Me₃Si)₂N)₃U}₂(μ-bpym)], 2, which is best described as a radical-bridged U^III–bpym˙⁻–U^III complex. Further reduction of 1 with 2 equiv. KC₈, affords [K(2.2.2-cryptand)]₂[{((Me₃Si)₂N)₃U^III}₂(μ-bpym²⁻)], 3. Addition of AgBPh₄ to complex 1 resulted in the oxidation of the ligand, yielding the radical-bridged complex [{((Me₃Si)₂N)₃U^IV}₂(μ-bpym˙⁻)][BPh₄], 4. X-ray crystallography, electrochemistry, susceptibility data, EPR and DFT/CASSCF calculations are in line with their assignments. In complexes 2 and 4 the presence of the radical-bridge leads to slow magnetic relaxation.

Convenient routes to dinuclear complexes of uranium where two uranium centers are bridged by the redox-active ligand bpym were identified resulting in unique and stable radical-bridged dimetallic complexes of U(iii) and U(iv) showing SMM behaviour.

Cation assisted binding and cleavage of dinitrogen by uranium complexes

N2 binding affinity decreases markedly in a series of isostructural U(iii)–alkali ions complexes with increasing cation size. N2 binding is undetectable in the Cs analogue, but the first example of cesium-assisted N2 cleavage to bis-nitride was observed at ambient condition.

Structure and magnetism of a tetrahedral uranium(iii) β-diketiminate complex

We describe the functionalisation of the previously reported uranium(iii) β-diketiminate complex (BDI)UI₂(THF)₂ (1) with one and two equivalents of a sterically demanding 2,6-diisopropylphenolate ligand (ODipp) leading to the formation of two heteroleptic complexes: [(BDI)UI(ODipp)]₂ (2) and (BDI)U(ODipp)₂ (3). The latter is a rare example of a tetrahedral uranium(iii) complex, and it shows single-molecule magnet behaviour.

Theoretical Investigation of the Electronic Structure and Magnetic Properties of Oxo-Bridged Uranyl(V) Dinuclear and Trinuclear Complexes

The uranyl(V) complexes [UO₂(dbm)₂K(18C6)]₂ (dbm = dibenzoylmethanate) and [UO₂(L)]₃(L = 2-(4-tolyl)-1,3-bis(quinolyl)malondiiminate), exhibiting diamond-shaped U₂O₂ and triangular-shaped U₃O₃ cores respectively with 5f¹-5f¹ and 5f¹-5f¹-5f¹ configurations, have been investigated using relativistic density functional theory (DFT). The bond order and QTAIM analyses reveal that the covalent contribution to the bonding within the oxo cores is slightly more important for U₃O₃ than for U₂O₂, in line with the shorter U-O distances existing in the trinuclear complex in comparison to those in the binuclear complex. Using the broken symmetry (BS) approach combined with the B3LYP functional for the calculation of the magnetic exchange coupling constants (J) between the magnetic centers, the antiferromagnetic (AF) character of these complexes was confirmed, the estimated J values being respectively equal to -24.1 and -7.2 cm^-1 for the dioxo and trioxo species. It was found that the magnetic exchange is more sensitive to small variations of the core geometry of the dioxo species in comparison to the trioxo species. Although the robust AF exchange coupling within the U_xO_x cores is generally maintained when small variations of the UOU angle are applied, a weak ferromagnetic character appears in the dioxo species when this angle is higher than 114°, its value for the actual structure being equal to 105.9°. The electronic factors driving the magnetic coupling are discussed.

DFT Investigations of the Magnetic Properties of Actinide Complexes

Over the past 25 years, magnetic actinide complexes have been the object of considerable attention, not only at the experimental level, but also at the theoretical one. Such systems are of great interest, owing to the well-known larger spin–orbit coupling for actinide ions, and could exhibit slow relaxation of the magnetization, arising from a large anisotropy barrier, and magnetic hysteresis of purely molecular origin below a given blocking temperature. Furthermore, more diffuse 5f orbitals than lanthanide 4f ones (more covalency) could lead to stronger magnetic super-exchange. On the other hand, the extraordinary experimental challenges of actinide complexes chemistry, because of their rarity and toxicity, afford computational chemistry a particularly valuable role. However, for such a purpose, the use of a multiconfigurational post-Hartree-Fock approach is required, but such an approach is computationally demanding for polymetallic systems—notably for actinide ones—and usually simplified models are considered instead of the actual systems. Thus, Density Functional Theory (DFT) appears as an alternative tool to compute magnetic exchange coupling and to explore the electronic structure and magnetic properties of actinide-containing molecules, especially when the considered systems are very large. In this paper, relevant achievements regarding DFT investigations of the magnetic properties of actinide complexes are surveyed, with particular emphasis on some representative examples that illustrate the subject, including actinides in Single Molecular Magnets (SMMs) and systems featuring metal-metal super-exchange coupling interactions. Examples are drawn from studies that are either entirely computational or are combined experimental/computational investigations in which the latter play a significant role.

Three-Dimensional (3-D) Ferromagnetic Network of Mn12 Single-Molecule Magnets: Subtle Environmental Effects and Switching to Antiferromagnetic

A new member of the Mn₁₂ family of single-molecule magnets (SMMs) has been prepared and found to be the first of this family to give a 3-D ferromagnetic network. [Mn₁₂O₁₂(O₂CC₆H₄-p-F)₁₆(H₂O)₄] (2) was prepared by carboxylate substitution on the acetate derivative with p-F-benzoic acid and crystallizes as 2·8MeCN in space group I4̅2m with extensive formation of intermolecular C-H···F hydrogen-bonding. The latter leads to a combination of ferromagnetic (F) and antiferromagnetic (AF) interactions and an overall F network that gives a χ_MT value at low T that is abnormally high for an S = 10 ground state. 2·8MeCN undergoes solvent loss under vacuum to 2, with a decrease in unit-cell volume of 17%, primarily due to a 13% decrease in the c-axis. The χ_MT vs T plot for 2 indicates a switch to a net AF network. Exposure to air causes hydration to 2·3H₂O, a concomitant increase in unit cell volume, and a switch back to a F network. The same conversion of 2·8MeCN to 2·3H₂O can also be accomplished in one step rather than two steps, by leaving crystals of the former exposed to air at ambient temperature and pressure for 10 days, giving the same magnetic plots. Interestingly, the desolvation/solvation processes cause Jahn-Teller isomerism to occur, but the ratio of the faster-relaxing isomer to the normal slowly relaxing one does not change monotonically. Single-crystal micro-SQUID studies on 2·8MeCN show the expected magnetization hysteresis loops for a SMM and a small exchange-bias from the intermolecular interactions that is unexpectedly AF. Since the micro-SQUID study only identifies interactions along the easy-axis (z-axis) of the crystal, this is readily rationalized as due to the J_z components of the intermolecular interactions in 2·8MeCN being net AF. The combined results offer useful insights into the degree of sensitivity of the magnetic properties to small environmental perturbations.

Modeling the electronic states and magnetic properties derived from the f1 configuration in lanthanocene and actinocene compounds

The electronic structure and magnetic properties of a series of Kramers ions with f¹ configuration in axial symmetry have been analyzed with a combination of theoretical methods: ab initio relativistic wavefunction methods as well as a crystal-field (CF) model with parameters extracted from the ab initio calculations.

Unusual Mn(III/IV)4 Cubane and Mn(III)16M4 (M = Ca, Sr) Looplike Clusters from the Use of Dimethylarsinic Acid

Three complexes are reported from the initial use of dimethylarsinic acid (Me2AsO2H) in Mn(III/IV) cluster chemistry, [Mn4O4(O2AsMe2)6] (3; 2Mn(III), 2Mn(IV)), and [Mn16X4O8(O2CPh)16(Me2AsO2)24] (X = Ca(2+) (4) or Sr(2+) (5); 16Mn(III)). They were obtained from reactions with [Mn12O12(O2CR)16(H2O)4] (R = Me, Ph) either without (3) or with (4 and 5) the addition of X(2+) salts. Complex 3 contains a [Mn4O4](6+) cubane, whereas isostructural 4 and 5 contain a planar loop structure comprising four Mn4 asymmetric "butterfly" units linked by alternating anti,anti μ-O2AsMe2 and {X2(O2AsMe2)(O2CPh)2} units. Variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility (χM) data were collected on dried microcrystalline samples of 3-5 in the 5.0-300 K range in a 0.1 T (1000 G) direct-current (dc) magnetic field. Data for 3 were fit to the appropriate Van Vleck equation (using the [Formula: see text] = -2JŜi·Ŝj convention) for a cubane of virtual C2v symmetry, giving J33 = 0.0(1) cm(-1), J34 = -3.4(4) cm(-1), J44 = -9.8(2) cm(-1), and g = 1.99(1), where the Jij subscripts refer to the oxidation states of the interacting Mn atoms. The ground state thus consists of two coupled Mn(IV) and two essentially noninteracting Mn(III). For 4 and 5, low-lying excited states from the high nuclearity and weak couplings prevent fits of dc magnetization data, but in-phase alternating current susceptibility χ'MT data down to 1.8 K indicate them to possess S = 4 ground states, if considered single Mn16 units. If instead they are treated as tetramers of weakly coupled Mn4 units, then each of the latter has an S = 2 ground state. Complexes 4 and 5 also exhibit very weak out-of-phase χ″M signals characteristic of slow relaxation, and magnetization versus dc field scans on a single crystal of 4·15MeCN at T ≥ 0.04 K showed hysteresis loops but with unusual features suggesting the magnetization relaxation barrier consists of more than one contribution.

A Mononuclear Uranium(IV) Single-Molecule Magnet with an Azobenzene Radical Ligand

A tetravalent uranium compound with a radical azobenzene ligand, namely, [{(SiMe2 NPh)3 -tacn}U(IV) (η(2) -N2 Ph2 (.) )] (2), was obtained by one-electron reduction of azobenzene by the trivalent uranium compound [U(III) {(SiMe2 NPh)3 -tacn}] (1). Compound 2 was characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and (1) H NMR, IR, and UV/Vis/NIR spectroscopy. The magnetic properties of 2 and precursor 1 were studied by static magnetization and ac susceptibility measurements, which for the former revealed single-molecule magnet behaviour for the first time in a mononuclear U(IV) compound, whereas trivalent uranium compound 1 does not exhibit slow relaxation of the magnetization at low temperatures. A first approximation to the magnetic behaviour of these compounds was attempted by combining an effective electrostatic model with a phenomenological approach using the full single-ion Hamiltonian.

A zig-zag uranyl(v)–Mn(ii) single chain magnet with a high relaxation barrier

A 1D zig-zag coordination polymer based on a cation–cation [(U^VO₂)Mn^II] repeated unit shows single chain magnet (SCM) behaviour with a high energy barrier of 122 K.
