On the Concept of Hemilability: Insights into a Donor-Functionalized Iridium(I) NHC Motif and Its Impact on Reactivity

BICAAC-Derived Covalent and Cationic Ir(I) Complexes: Application of Ir(BICAAC)Cl(COD) Complexes as Catalysts for Transfer Hydrogenation and Hydrosilylation Reactions

The ambiphilic bicyclic (alkyl)(amino)carbenes (Me/iPrBICAAC) upon reaction with [IrCl(COD)]2 smoothly afford mononuclear Ir(I) complexes that have been spectroscopically and structurally characterized. These complexes exhibit good catalytic activity for transfer hydrogenation (TH) of 4-chlorobenzaldehyde using isopropyl alcohol (iPrOH), with turnover frequency values ranging between 6269 and 8093 h-1. Choosing the covalent complex Ir(MeBICAAC)Cl(COD) as a catalyst, a wide array of carbonyls and imines functionalized with electron-withdrawing and electron-donating substituents have been surveyed and afforded their reduced products in moderate-to-good yields. No detachment of the BICAAC unit from the Ir center was observed upon prolonged heating of Ir(MeBICAAC)Cl(COD) in toluene-d8 or isopropyl alcohol-d8, which evidenced good thermal stability of the catalyst. Complex Ir(MeBICAAC)Cl(COD) was also found to be catalytically active for the hydrosilylation of a variety of aldehydes using triethylsilane (Et3SiH).

RuII-Complexes of heteroditopic chelating NHC ligands: effective catalysts for the β-alkylation of secondary alcohols and the synthesis of 2-alkylaminoquinoline derivatives following the dehydrogenative protocol

Ru^II-Complexes of chelating heteroditopic N-heterocyclic carbene ligands featuring imidazol-2-ylidene (ImNHC) and 1,2,3-triazol-5-ylidene (tzNHC) donors connected via a CH₂ spacer, 1a-c, were found to be very effective catalysts for the cross-coupling of secondary and primary alcohols with the elimination of H₂O. Diverse β-alkylated secondary alcohols were thus obtained by following this method in excellent yields of up to 95% by employing a very low catalyst (1a) loading of 0.01-0.001 mol% along with the inexpensive base KOH. Mechanistically, the present protocol follows the borrowing hydrogen strategy which was established by various control experiments including deuterium labelling experiments and importantly, ¹H NMR and ESI-MS analyses validated the participation of a Ru-H species in the catalytic cycle. Remarkably, the present system displayed the highest Ru-based TON of 396 000 for the β-benzylation of 1-phenylethanol with a catalyst loading of 1 ppm (0.0001 mol%). Additionally, diverse 2-alkylaminoquinoline derivatives were synthesized in a one-pot manner from 2-aminobenzyl alcohol, 2-arylacetonitrile, and various primary alcohols.

Iron-Catalyzed Oxidative Amination of Benzylic C(sp3)-H Bonds with Anilines

Iron-catalyzed oxidative amination of benzylic C(sp³)-H bonds with anilines bearing electron-withdrawing groups (EWGs) or electron-donating groups (EDGs) is realized based on simple variations of N-substituents on imidazolium cations in novel ionic Fe(III) complexes. The structural modification of the imidazolium cation resulted in regulation of the redox potential and the catalytic performance of the iron metal center. Using DTBP as oxidant, [HItBu][FeBr₄] showed the highest catalytic activity for anilines bearing EWGs, while [HIPym][FeBr₄] was more efficient for EDG-substituted anilines. This work provides alternative access to benzylamines with the advantages of both a wide substrate scope and iron catalysis.

Iridium(i) complexes bearing hemilabile coumarin-functionalised N-heterocyclic carbene ligands with application as alkyne hydrosilylation catalysts

A set of iridium(i) complexes of formula IrCl(κC,η²-I^RCou^R')(cod) or IrCl(κC, η²-BzI^RCou^R')(cod) (cod = 1,5-cyclooctadiene; Cou = coumarin; I = imidazolin-2-carbene; BzI = benzimidazolin-2-carbene) have beeen prepared from the corresponding azolium salt and [Ir(μ-OMe)(cod)]₂ in THF at room temperature. The crystalline structures of 4b and 5b show a distorted trigonal bipyramidal configuration in the solid state with a coordinated coumarin moiety. In contrast, an equilibrium between this pentacoordinated structure and the related square planar isomer is observed in solution as a consequence of the hemilability of the pyrone ring. Characterization of both species by NMR was achieved at the low and high temperature limits, respectively. In addition, the thermodynamic parameters of the equilibrium, ΔH_R and ΔS_R, were obtained by VT ¹H NMR spectroscopy and fall in the range 22-33 kJ mol^-1 and 72-113 J mol^-1 K^-1, respectively. Carbonylation of IrCl(κC,η²-BzI^TolCou^7,8-Me₂)(cod) resulted in the formation of a bis-CO derivative showing no hemilabile behaviour. The newly synthesised complexes efficiently catalyze the hydrosilylation of alkynes at room temperature with a preference for the β-(Z) vinylsilane isomer.

Water-soluble silver(i) complexes with N-donor benzimidazole ligands containing an imidazolium core: stability and preliminary biological studies

Herein, we report the synthesis, characterisation and preliminary biological evaluation of two novel silver(i) complexes of type [AgL₂](NO₃)₃ (3 and 4) with ionic N-donor benzimidazoles. The complexes have been synthesized by the reaction of 1.5 equivalents of silver nitrate and N-donor benzimidazoles containing an imidazolium core at the 2-position (1 and 2) in ethanol. The X-ray analysis of 4 shows that it has two free imidazolium cores and the charge is balanced with three nitrate anions. A study by the combination of NMR, IR, LC-MS and elemental analysis techniques also suggests that the complexes have this structure both in the solid-state and solution. The complexes are highly soluble and stable in water. Cytotoxicity evaluation against four cancerous human cells and one non-cancerous human cell revealed that the complexes have no significant anti-growth effect. However, the complexes showed a remarkable antimicrobial effect at normalized minimum inhibitory concentrations (normalized MICs) in the range of 33-268 μM against a panel of microorganisms consisting of Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria, and fungi.

A family of rhodium(i) NHC chelates featuring O-containing tethers for catalytic tandem alkene isomerization-hydrosilylation

The rhodium complex Rh(HL)(COD)Cl, 1, L being a functionalized N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligand with an oxygen-containing pendant arm, has been used as the entry point to synthesize a series of neutral and cationic Rh(i) O,C chelates. While the Rh-carbene interaction is similar in all these 16-electron complexes, structural analysis reveals that the strength of the Rh-O bond is greatly affected by the nature of the O-donor: R-O^- > R-OH > R-OBF₃. These subtle changes in the nature of the O-containing tether are found to be responsible for large differences in the alkene hydrosilylation catalytic activity of these compounds: the stronger the Rh-O interaction, the better the catalytic performances. The most active catalyst, [Rh(L)(COD)], 2, demonstrated good catalytic activity under mild reaction conditions for the hydrosilylation of a range of alkene substrates with the industrially relevant non-activated tertiary silane, 1,1,1,3,5,5,5-heptamethyltrisiloxane (MD^HM). Furthermore, this complex is an effective catalyst for the selective remote functionalization of internal olefins at room temperature via tandem alkene isomerization-hydrosilylation.

Activation of the Ir-N(pyridine) Bond in Half-Sandwich Tethered Iridium(III) Complexes

We present four new organometallic half-sandwich iridium(III) complexes of formula [Ir(η⁵:κ¹-C₅Me₄CH₂py)(N,N)](PF₆)₂, bearing a N,N-chelating ligand [ethylenediamine (en), 1; 1,3-diaminopropane (dap), 2; 2,2'-bipyridine (bipy), 3; 1,10-phenanthroline (phen), 4]; and a derivatized cyclopentadienyl ligand, C₅Me₄CH₂C₅H₄N, which forms an additional five-membered chelate. The latter is hemilabile, and the Ir-N(py) bond can be reversibly cleaved by various stimuli. The four complexes are unreactive toward hydrolysis at pH 7. Interestingly, 1 and 2 react with hydrochloric acid and formate, and speciation between closed and open tether complexes can be followed by ¹H NMR spectroscopy. Complex 1 binds to nucleobase guanine (9-ethylguanine, 9-EtG), yet interaction to calf-thymus DNA was not observed. New X-ray structures of closed tether complexes 1-4 and open tether complexes [Ir(η⁵-C₅Me₄CH₂pyH)(en)Cl](PF₆)₂ (1·HCl) and [Ir(η⁵-C₅Me₄CH₂py)(en)H]PF₆ (1·hyd) have been determined. Hydride capture is efficient for 1 and 2. The kinetics of Ir-H bond formation and hydride transfer in a model organic molecule have been investigated, revealing a strong dependence on the temperature. Coincubation of complex 1 with nontoxic concentrations of sodium formate decreases the IC₅₀ value in MCF7 breast cancer cells, indicating the possibility of intracellular activation of the Ir-N(py) tether bond to generate cytotoxic activity via iridium-mediated transfer hydrogenation.

Hemilabile Ligands as Mechanosensitive Electrode Contacts for Molecular Electronics

Single-molecule junctions that are sensitive to compression or elongation are an emerging class of nanoelectromechanical systems (NEMS). Although the molecule-electrode interface can be engineered to impart such functionality, most studies to date rely on poorly defined interactions. We focused on this issue by synthesizing molecular wires designed to have chemically defined hemilabile contacts based on (methylthio)thiophene moieties. We measured their conductance as a function of junction size and observed conductance changes of up to two orders of magnitude as junctions were compressed and stretched. Localised interactions between weakly coordinating thienyl sulfurs and the electrodes are responsible for the observed effect and allow reversible monodentate⇄bidentate contact transitions as the junction is modulated in size. We observed an up to ≈100-fold sensitivity boost of the (methylthio)thiophene-terminated molecular wire compared with its non-hemilabile (methylthio)benzene counterpart and demonstrate a previously unexplored application of hemilabile ligands to molecular electronics.

Electron-poor hemilabile dicationic palladium NHC complexes - synthesis, structure and catalytic activity

We present a new class of dicationic palladium NHC complexes with two carbene ligands bearing different aryl substituents and a hemilabile pyrimidyl group. They can either be synthesized from the imidazolium salts via the silver transmetalation route to a halide-free palladium(ii) precursor or by direct deprotonation by palladium acetate. For four complexes we could determine their solid-state structures by X-ray diffraction experiments. Insight gained by NMR spectroscopy and DFT calculations revealed that in solution the two potentially bidentate ligands interchange between chelating and non-chelating coordination modes. The preference of these coordination modes is governed by the steric influence of the different ligands. The complexes were shown to be active catalysts for the hydroarylation of alkynes, and their performance was rationalized by DFT calculations.

A leap forward in iridium-NHC catalysis: new horizons and mechanistic insights

This review summarises the most recent advances in Ir-NHC catalysis while revisiting all the classical reactions in which this type of catalyst has proved to be active. The influence of the ligand system and, in particular, the impact of the NHC ligand on the activity and selectivity of the reaction have been analysed, accompanied by an examination of the great variety of catalytic cycles hitherto reported. The reaction mechanisms so far proposed are described and commented on for each individual process. Moreover, some general considerations that attempt to explain the influence of the NHC from a mechanistic viewpoint are presented at the end of the review. The first sections are dedicated to the most widely explored reactions that use Ir-NHCs, i.e., hydrogenation and transfer hydrogenation, for which a general overview that tries to compile all the Ir-NHC catalysts hitherto reported for these processes is provided. The next sections deal with hydrogen borrowing, hydrosilylation, water splitting, dehydrogenation (of alcohols, alkanes, aminoboranes and formic acid), hydrogen isotope exchange (HIE), signal amplification by reversible exchange and C-H bond functionalisation (silylation and borylation). The last section compiles a series of reactions somewhat less explored for Ir-NHC catalysts that include the hydroalkynylation of imines, hydroamination, diboration of olefins, hydrolysis and methanolysis of silanes, arylation of aldehydes with boronic acids, addition of aroyl chlorides to alkynes, visible light driven reactions, isomerisation of alkenes, asymmetric intramolecular allylic amination and reactions that employ heterometallic catalysts containing at least one Ir-NHC unit.

Ruthenium (II) and Iridium (III) Complexes of N-Heterocyclic Carbene and Pyridinol Derived Bidentate Chelates: Synthesis, Characterization, and Reactivity

We report the synthesis and characterization of new ruthenium(II) and iridium(III) complexes of a new bidentate chelate, NHCR'-pyOR (OR = OMe, OtBu, OH and R' = Me, Et). Synthesis and characterization studies were done on the following compounds: four ligand precursors (1-4); two silver complexes of these NHCR'-pyOR ligands (5-7); six ruthenium complexes of the type [η6-(p-cymene)Ru(NHCR'-pyOR)Cl]X with R' = Me, Et and R = Me, tBu, H and X = OTf-, PF6- and PO2F2- (8-13); and two iridium complexes, [Cp*Ir(NHCMe-pyOtBu)Cl]PF6 (14) and [Cp*Ir(NHCMe-pyOH)Cl]PO2F2 (15). The complexes are air stable and were isolated in moderate yield. However, for the PF6- salts, hydrolysis of the PF6- counter anion to PO2F2- during t-butyl ether deprotection was observed. Most of the complexes were characterized by 1H and 13C-NMR, MS, IR, and X-ray diffraction. The ruthenium complexes [η6-(p-cymene)Ru(NHCMe-pyOR)Cl]OTf (R = Me (8) and tBu (9)) were tested for their ability to accelerate CO2 hydrogenation and formic acid dehydrogenation. However, our studies show that the complexes transform during the reaction and these complexes are best thought of as pre-catalysts.

Smart N-Heterocyclic Carbene Ligands in Catalysis

It is well-recognized that N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands have provided a new dimension to the design of homogeneous catalysts. Part of the success of this type of ligands resides in the limitless access to a variety of topologies with tuned electronic properties, but also in the ability of a family of NHCs that are able to adapt their properties to the specific requirements of individual catalytic transformations. The term "smart" is used here to refer to switchable, multifunctional, adaptable, or tunable ligands and, in general, to all those ligands that are able to modify their steric or electronic properties to fulfill the requirements of a defined catalytic reaction. The purpose of this review is to comprehensively describe all types of smart NHC ligands by focusing attention on the catalytically relevant ligand-based reactivity.

Triboluminescence and Metal Phosphor for Organic Light-Emitting Diodes: Functional Pt(II) Complexes with Both 2-Pyridylimidazol-2-ylidene and Bipyrazolate Chelates

We report the utilization of both pyrid-2-yl-imidazolylidene and dianionic bipz chelates as constituents in syntheses of a new series of charge-neutral Pt(II) complexes 1-4, among which complex 4 revealed remarkable triboluminescence, i.e., generation of photoemission upon grinding or cracking of the solid sample. The triboluminescence is found to be sensitive to the subtle changes of the associated substituents of pyrid-2-yl-imidazolylidene chelate, as verified by the disappearance of the triboluminescence for complexes 1-3. Alternatively, the well-ordered solid packing of 3, as indicated by the grazing incidence X-ray scattering experiment, serves as an ideal emitter for the fabrication of highly efficient OLEDs, rendering high external quantum efficienciy (25.9%) and luminesce efficiency (90 cd A^-1) at the practical brightness of 100 cd m^-2. The rather low roll-off in efficiency (24.4%, 85 cd A^-1 at high brightness of 1000 cd m^-2) is attributed to the short excited-state lifetime of 3 (∼800 ns) in the solid state, which in turn is associated with the MMLCT transition character.
