Trivalent uranium phenylchalcogenide complexes: exploring the bonding and reactivity with CS2 in the Tp*2UEPh series (E = O, S, Se, Te)

Uranium(IV) Thio- and Selenoether Complexes: Syntheses, Structures, and Computational Investigation of U-ER2 Interactions

Rigid thioether- and selenoether-containing pincer proligands H[AS₂ Ph 2 ] (1) and H[ASe₂ Ph 2 ] (2) were synthesized, and deprotonation provided the potassium salts [K(AS₂ Ph 2 )(dme)] (3) and [K(ASe₂ Ph 2 )(dme)₂ ] (4). Reaction of two equivalents of 3 or 4 with [UI₄ (dioxane)₂ ] afforded the uranium thioether complex [(AS₂ Ph 2 )₂ UI₂ ] (5) and the first example of a uranium-selenoether complex, [(ASe₂ Ph 2 )₂ UI₂ ] (6). X-ray structures revealed distorted square antiprismatic geometries in which the AE₂ Ph 2 ligands are κ³ -coordinated. The nature of the U-ER₂ bonding in 5 and 6, as well as methyl-free analogues of 5 and 6 and a hypothetical ether analogue, was investigated computationally (including NBO, AIM, and ELF calculations) illustrating increasing covalency from O to S to Se.

Rare Earth Metal Complexes Supported by a Tripodal Tris(amido) Ligand System Featuring an Arene Anchor

A new tripodal tris(amido) ligand system featuring an arene anchor was developed and applied to the coordination chemistry of rare earth metals. Two tris(amido) ligands with a 1,3,5-triphenylbenzene backbone were prepared in two steps from commercially available reagents on a gram scale. Salt metathesis and alkane elimination reactions were exploited to prepare mononuclear rare earth metal complexes in moderate to good yields. For salt metathesis reactions, while metal tribromides yielded neutral metal tris(amido) complexes, metal trichlorides led to the formation of ate complexes with an additional chloride bound to the metal center. The new compounds were characterized by X-ray crystallography, elemental analysis, and ¹H and ¹³C nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. The rare earth metal complexes exhibit a trigonal planar coordination geometry for the [MN₃] fragment in the solid state rather than a trigonal pyramidal geometry, commonly observed for rare earth metal tris(amido) complexes such as M[N(SiMe₃)₂]₃. Moreover, the arene anchor of the tripodal ligands is engaged in a nonnegligible interaction with the rare earth metal ions. Density functional theory calculations were performed to gain insight into the bonding interactions between the tripodal ligands and the rare earth metal ions. While LUMOs of these rare earth metal complexes are mainly π* orbitals of the arene with a minor component of metal-based orbitals, HOMO-15 and HOMO-16 of a lanthanum complex show that the arene anchor serves as a π donor to the trivalent lanthanum ion.

Tris-{hydridotris(1-pyrazolyl)borato}actinide Complexes: Synthesis, Spectroscopy, Crystal Structure, Bonding Properties and Magnetic Behaviour

The isostructural compounds of the trivalent actinides uranium, neptunium, plutonium, americium, and curium with the hydridotris(1-pyrazolyl)borato (Tp) ligand An[η3 -HB(N2 C3 H3 )3 ]3 (AnTp3 ) have been obtained through several synthetic routes. Structural, spectroscopic (absorption, infrared, laser fluorescence) and magnetic characterisation of the compounds were performed in combination with crystal field, density functional theory (DFT) and relativistic multiconfigurational calculations. The covalent bonding interactions were analysed in terms of the natural bond orbital (NBO) and quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM) models.

Heteroleptic Samarium(III) Chalcogenide Complexes: Opportunities for Giant Exchange Coupling in Bridging σ- and π-Radical Lanthanide Dichalcogenides

The introduction of (N2)3-• radicals into multinuclear lanthanide molecular magnets raised hysteresis temperatures by stimulating strong exchange coupling between spin centers. Radical ligands with larger donor atoms could promote more efficient magnetic coupling between lanthanides to provide superior magnetic properties. Here, we show that heavy chalcogens (S, Se, Te) are primed to fulfill these criteria. The moderately reducing Sm(II) complex, [Sm(N††)2], where N†† is the bulky bis(triisopropylsilyl)amide ligand, can be oxidized (i) by diphenyldichalcogenides E2Ph2 (E = S, Se, Te) to form the mononuclear series [Sm(N††)2(EPh)] (E = S, 1-S; Se, 1-Se, Te, 1-Te); (ii) S8 or Se8 to give dinuclear [{Sm(N††)2}2(μ-η2:η2-E2)] (E = S, 2-S2; Se, 2-Se2); or (iii) with Te═PEt3 to yield [{Sm(N††)2}(μ-Te)] (3). These complexes have been characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction, multinuclear NMR, FTIR, and electronic spectroscopy; the steric bulk of N†† dictates the formation of mononuclear complexes with chalcogenate ligands and dinuclear species with the chalcogenides. The Lα1 fluorescence-detected X-ray absorption spectra at the Sm L3-edge yielded resolved pre-edge and white-line peaks for 1-S and 2-E2, which served to calibrate our computational protocol in the successful reproduction of the spectral features. This method was employed to elucidate the ground state electronic structures for proposed oxidized and reduced variants of 2-E2. Reactivity is ligand-based, forming species with bridging superchalcogenide (E2)-• and subchalcogenide (E2)3-• radical ligands. The extraordinarily large exchange couplings provided by these dichalcogenide radicals reveal their suitability as potential successors to the benchmark (N2)3-• complexes in molecular magnets.

Evaluation of Influencing Factors in Tetravalent Uranium Complex-Mediated CO2 Functionalization by Density Functional Theory

The functionalization of CO₂ mediated by a series of U(IV) mixed-sandwich compounds, (COT^TIPS2)Cp*UR (R = -CH₃, -CH₂Ph, -CH₂TMS, -CH(TMS)₂, -NHPh, -OPh, -SPh, -SePh; COT^TIPS2 = C₈H₆(SiⁱPr₃-1,4)₂; Cp* = C₅Me₅; TMS = SiMe₃), was investigated by the density functional theory method. A two-step mechanism was revealed, in which the insertion of CO₂ into the U-C bond was identified as the rate-determining step via a transition state featured by a four-membered ring with a free-energy barrier of 18.8 kcal/mol to the reaction of the (COT^TIPS2)Cp*UCH₃ system. The whole reaction was strongly exothermic by 45.0 kcal/mol. Substitution effect was discussed, including the bulkiness of the R group and the nature of the ligating atom, and steric hindrance and electrostatic interactions were found to be responsible for the observed variation in reactivity. The reactivity of U(III) and U(IV) complexes in CO₂ functionalization was also compared and discussed. The results were consistent with experimental studies and complemented with molecular level of understanding on the mechanisms of CO₂ functionalization promoted by tetravalent U complexes.

Oxidation of uranium(iv) mixed imido-amido complexes with PhEEPh and to generate uranium(vi) bis(imido) dichalcogenolates, U(NR)2(EPh)2(L)2

This work provides new routes for the conversion of U(iv) into U(vi) bis(imido) complexes and offers new information on the manner in which the U(vi) compounds form. Many compounds from the series described by the general formula U(NR)₂(EPh)₂(L)₂ (R = 2,6-diisopropylphenyl, tert-butyl; E = S, Se, Te; L = py, EPh) were synthesized via oxidation of an in situ generated U(iv) amido-imido species with Ph₂E₂. This synthetic sequence provides a general route into bis(imido) U(vi) chalcogenolate complexes, circumventing the need to perform problematic salt metathesis reactions on U(vi) iodides. Investigation into the speciation of the U(iv) complexes that form prior to oxidation found a significant dependence on the identity of the ancillary ligands, with ^tBu₂bpy forming the isolable imido-(bis)amido complex, U(NDipp)(NHDipp)₂(^tBu₂bpy)₂. Together, these data are consistent with the view that the bis(imido) U(vi) motif - much like the uranyl ion, UO₂²⁺- is a thermodynamic sink into which simple ligand frameworks are unable to prevent uranium from falling when in the presence of a suitable retinue of imido proligands.

En Route Activity of Hydration Water Allied with Uranyl (UO22+) Salts Amid Complexation Reactions with an Organothio-Based (O, N, S) Donor Base

This study provides en route activity of hydration water allied with uranyl salts amid complexation reactions with a donor species L bearing O, N, and S (phenolic, -OH; imine, -HC═N-; and thio-, -S-) donor functionalities. The UO₂²⁺/L reaction encounters a series of hydrolytic steps with hydration water released from uranyl salts during the complexation processes. Primarily, the coordinated [L_{(-HC=N)(OH)(-HC=N)} → UO₂(NO₃)₂/(OAc)₂] species formed during the complexation process undergoes partial hydrolysis of the coordinated ligand resulting in the isolation of an aldehyde coordinated uranyl species [L_{(-HC=N)(OH)(-HC=O)} → UO₂(NO₃)₂/(OAc)₂]. The influence of hydration water continued as the reaction further proceeded to the next stage resulting in alteration of the aldehyde coordinated uranyl species [L_{(-HC=N)(OH)(-HC=O)} → UO₂(NO₃)₂/(OAc)₂] to an oxidized carboxy coordinated uranyl species [L_{(-HC=N) (OH){-C(═O)O}} → (NO₃)/(OAc)]₂ without the use of any external oxidizing agents. These studies are of particular significance as they allow one to realize the adventitious role of hydration water released from commonly used uranyl salts during their reaction with organic donor substrates in nonaqueous medium. These results also form an experimental basis to understand the critical behavior of UO₂²⁺ ion activity (as oxidizing, reducing, or catalytic) relevant in many chemical, biological, and environmental processes.

Structural Characteristics, Population Analysis, and Binding Energies of [An(NO3)]2+ (with An = Ac to Lr)

Efficient predictive capabilities are essential for the actinide series since regulatory constraints for radioactive work, associated costs needed for specialized facilities, and the short half-lives of many actinides present great challenges in laboratory settings. Improved predictive accuracy is advantageous for numerous applications including the optimization and design of separation agents for nuclear fuel and waste. One limitation of calculations in support of these applications is that the large variations observed from predictions obtained with currently available methods can make comparisons across studies uncertain. Benchmarking currently available computational methodologies is essential to establish reliable practices across the community to guarantee an accurate physical description of the systems studied. To understand the performance of a variety of common theoretical methods, a systematic analysis of differences observed in the prediction of structural characteristics, electron withdrawing effects, and binding energies of [An(NO3)]2+ (with An = Ac to Lr) in gas and aqueous phases is reported. Population analysis obtained with Mulliken and Löwdin reflect a large dependence on the level of theory of choice, whereas those obtained with natural bond orbital show larger consistency across methodologies. Predicted stability across the actinide series calculated with coupled cluster with perturbative doubles and triples at the triple ζ level is equivalent to the one obtained when extrapolated to the complete basis set limit. The ground state of [Fm(NO3)]2+ and [Md(NO3)]2+ is predicted to have an electronic structure corresponding to An III state in gas and An IV in aqueous phase, whereas the ground state of [An(NO3)]2+ (with An = Ac to Es, Lr) presents an electronic structure corresponding to An IV in the gas and aqueous phase. The compounds studied with No in gas and aqueous phase present a preferred No III state, and the Lr compounds did not follow trends predicted for the rest of the actinide series, as previously observed in studies regarding its unusual electronic structure relative to its position in the periodic table.

Terminal Uranium(V/VI) Nitride Activation of Carbon Dioxide and Carbon Disulfide: Factors Governing Diverse and Well-Defined Cleavage and Redox Reactions

The reactivity of terminal uranium(V/VI) nitrides with CE₂ (E=O, S) is presented. Well-defined C=E cleavage followed by zero-, one-, and two-electron redox events is observed. The uranium(V) nitride [U(Tren^TIPS )(N)][K(B15C5)₂ ] (1, Tren^TIPS =N(CH₂ CH₂ NSiiPr₃ )₃ ; B15C5=benzo-15-crown-5) reacts with CO₂ to give [U(Tren^TIPS )(O)(NCO)][K(B15C5)₂ ] (3), whereas the uranium(VI) nitride [U(Tren^TIPS )(N)] (2) reacts with CO₂ to give isolable [U(Tren^TIPS )(O)(NCO)] (4); complex 4 rapidly decomposes to known [U(Tren^TIPS )(O)] (5) with concomitant formation of N₂ and CO proposed, with the latter trapped as a vanadocene adduct. In contrast, 1 reacts with CS₂ to give [U(Tren^TIPS )(κ² -CS₃ )][K(B15C5)₂ ] (6), 2, and [K(B15C5)₂ ][NCS] (7), whereas 2 reacts with CS₂ to give [U(Tren^TIPS )(NCS)] (8) and "S", with the latter trapped as Ph₃ PS. Calculated reaction profiles reveal outer-sphere reactivity for uranium(V) but inner-sphere mechanisms for uranium(VI); despite the wide divergence of products the initial activation of CE₂ follows mechanistically related pathways, providing insight into the factors of uranium oxidation state, chalcogen, and NCE groups that govern the subsequent divergent redox reactions that include common one-electron reactions and a less-common two-electron redox event. Caution, we suggest, is warranted when utilising CS₂ as a reactivity surrogate for CO₂ .

Elucidating the Mechanism of Uranium Mediated Diazene N═N Bond Cleavage

Investigation into the reactivity of reduced uranium species toward diazenes has revealed key intermediates in the four-electron cleavage of azobenzene. Trivalent Tp*₂U(CH₂Ph) (1a) (Tp* = hydrotris(3,5-dimethylpyrazolyl)borate) and Tp*₂U(2,2'-bpy) (1b) both perform the two-electron reduction of diazenes affording η²-hydrazido complexes Tp*₂U(AzBz) (2-AzBz) (AzBz = azobenzene) and Tp*₂U(BCC) (2-BCC) (BCC = benzo[c]cinnoline) in contrast to precursors of the bis(Cp*) (Cp* = 1,2,3,4,5-pentamethylcyclopentadienide) ligand framework. The four-electron cleavage of diazenes to give trans-bis(imido) species was possible by using Cp*U(^MesPDI^Me)(THF) (3) (^MesPDI^Me = 2,6-((Mes)N═CMe)₂-C₅H₃N, Mes = 2,4,6-trimethylphenyl), which is supported by a highly reduced trianionic chelate that undergoes electron transfer. This proceeds via concerted addition at a single uranium center supported by both a crossover experiment and through addition of an asymmetrically substituted diazene, Ph-N═N-Tol. Further investigation of 3 and its substituted analogue, Cp*U(^tBu-^MesPDI^Me)(THF) (3-^tBu) (^tBu-^MesPDI^Me = 2,6-((Mes)N═CMe)₂-p-C(CH₃)₃-C₅H₂N), with benzo[c]cinnoline, revealed that the four-electron cleavage occurs first by a single electron reduction of the diazene with the redox chemistry performed solely at the redox-active pyridine(diimine) to form dimeric [Cp*U(BCC)(^MesHPDI^Me)]₂ (5) and Cp*U(BCC)(^tBu-^MesPDI^Me) (6). While a transient pyridine(diimine) triplet diradical in the formation of 5 results in H atom abstraction and p-pyridine coupling, the tert-butyl moiety in 6 allows for electronic rearrangement to occur, precluding deleterious pyridine-radical coupling. The monomeric analogue of 5, Cp*U(BCC)(^MesPDI^Me) (7), was synthesized via salt metathesis from Cp*UI(^MesPDI^Me) (3-I). All complexes have been characterized by ¹H NMR and electronic absorption spectroscopies, X-ray diffraction, and, where pertinent, EPR spectroscopy. Further, the electronic structures of 3-I, 5, and 7 have been investigated by SQUID magnetometry.

Dithio- and Diselenophosphinate Thorium(IV) and Uranium(IV) Complexes: Molecular and Electronic Structures, Spectroscopy, and Transmetalation Reactivity

We report a comparison of the molecular and electronic structures of dithio- and diselenophosphinate, (E2PR2)(1-) (E = S, Se; R = (i)Pr, (t)Bu), with thorium(IV) and uranium(IV) complexes. For the thorium dithiophosphinate complexes, reaction of ThCl4(DME)2 with 4 equiv of KS2PR2 (R = (i)Pr, (t)Bu) produced the homoleptic complexes, Th(S2P(i)Pr2)4 (1S-Th-(i)Pr) and Th(S2P(t)Bu2)4 (2S-Th-(t)Bu). The diselenophosphinate complexes were synthesized in a similar manner using KSe2PR2 to produce Th(Se2P(i)Pr2)4 (1Se-Th-(i)Pr) and Th(Se2P(t)Bu2)4 (2Se-Th-(t)Bu). U(S2P(i)Pr2)4, 1S-U-(i)Pr, could be made directly from UCl4 and 4 equiv of KS2P(i)Pr2. With (Se2P(i)Pr2)(1-), using UCl4 and 3 or 4 equiv of KSe2P(i)Pr2 yielded the monochloride product U(Se2P(i)Pr2)3Cl (3Se-U(iPr)-Cl), but using UI4(1,4-dioxane)2 produced the homoleptic U(Se2P(i)Pr2)4 (1Se-U-(i)Pr). Similarly, the reaction of UCl4 with 4 equiv of KS2P(t)Bu2 yielded U(S2P(t)Bu2)4 (2S-U-(t)Bu), whereas the reaction with KSe2P(t)Bu2 resulted in the formation of U(Se2P(t)Bu2)3Cl (4Se-U(tBu)-Cl). Using UI4(1,4-dioxane)2 and 4 equiv of KSe2P(t)Bu2 with UCl4 in acetonitrile yielded U(Se2P(t)Bu2)4 (2Se-U-(t)Bu). Transmetalation reactions were investigated with complex 2Se-U-(t)Bu and various CuX (X = Br, I) salts to yield U(Se2P(t)Bu2)3X (6Se-U(tBu)-Br and 7Se-U(tBu)-I) and 0.25 equiv of [Cu(Se2P(t)Bu2)]4 (8Se-Cu-(t)Bu). Additionally, 2Se-U-(t)Bu underwent transmetalation reactions with Hg2F2 and ZnCl2 to yield U(Se2P(t)Bu2)3F (6) and U(Se2P(t)Bu2)3Cl (4Se-U(tBu)-Cl), respectively. The molecular structures were analyzed using (1)H, (13)C, (31)P, and (77)Se NMR and IR spectroscopy and structurally characterized using X-ray crystallography. Using the QTAIM approach, the electronic structure of all homoleptic complexes was probed, showing slightly more covalent bonding character in actinide-selenium bonds over actinide-sulfur bonds.
