Abstract
Photophysical modulation of triarylboranes (TABs) through Lewis acid-base interactions is a fundamental approach for sensing anions. Yet, design principles for anion-responsive TABs displaying significant red-shift in absorption and photoluminescence (PL) have remained elusive. Herein, a new strategy for modulating the photophysical properties of TABs in a red-shift mode has been presented, by using a nitrogen-bridged triarylborane (1,4-phenazaborine: PAzB) with a contradictory dual role as a Lewis acid and an electron donor. Following the strategy, PAzB derivatives connected with an electron-deficient azaaromatic have been developed, and these compounds display a distinct red-shift in their absorption and PL in response to an anion. Spectroscopic analyses and quantum chemical calculations have revealed the formation of a tetracoordinate borate upon the addition of fluoride, narrowing the HOMO-LUMO gap and enhancing the charge-transfer character in the excited state. This approach has also been demonstrated in modulating the photophysical properties of solid-state films.

Abstract
Functional materials composed of Boron-chalcogenophene conjugates have emerged as promising ensemble featuring commendable optoelectronic properties. This review describes the categories, synthetic routes and optoelectronic applications of a range of boron-chalcogenophene conjugates. Conjugation and linking of different types of tri- and tetra-coordinated boron moieties with chalcogenophenes have remained an important strategy for constructing a range of functional materials. Synthetic protocols have been devised to efficiently prepare such chemically robust conjugates, often exhibiting a myriad of photophysical properties, redox capabilities and also solid-state behaviors. Tin-boron and silicon-boron exchange protocols have been efficiently adapted to access these boron-chalcogenophenes. Few other commonly used methods namely, hydroboration of alkynes as well as electrophilic borylations are also mentioned. The chemical and electronic properties of such boron-chalcogenophene conjugates are directly influenced by the strong Lewis acid character of trivalent boranes which can further alter the intra- and inter- molecular Lewis acid-base interactions. Apart from the synthetic protocols, recent advances in the application of these boron-chalcogenophene conjugates towards analyte sensing, organic electronics, molecular switches and several other aspects will be discussed in this review.

Abstract
(Hetero)arene-fused boroles are a class of compounds containing a 5-membered boron diene-ring. Based on their molecular framework, the (hetero)arene-fused boroles can be considered as boron-doped polycyclic antiaromatic hydrocarbons and are thus of great interest. Due to the vacant pz orbital on the 3-coordinate boron atom, the antiaromaticity and strain of the 5-membered borole ring, (hetero)arene-fused boroles possess strong electron accepting abilities and Lewis acidity. By functionalization, they can be tuned to optimize different properties for specific applications. Herein, we summarize synthetic methodologies, different strategies for their functionalization, and applications of (hetero)arene-fused boroles. (Hetero)arene-fused boroles, ‘antiaromatic’ 2n-electron π-systems, more stable and more functionalizable than boroles, offer greater potential for a variety of applications.![]()

Abstract
The interest in functional materials possessing improved properties led to development of new methods of their synthesis, which allowed to obtain new molecular arrangements with carbon and heteroatom motifs. Two of the classical reactions of versatile use are the Friedel-Crafts and the Bradsher reactions, which in the new heteroatomic versions allow to replace ring carbon atoms by heteroatoms. In the present work, we review methods of synthesis of C-S and C-P bonds utilizing thia- and phospha-Friedel-Crafts-Bradsher cyclizations. Single examples of C-As and lack of C-Se bond formation, involving two of the closest neighbors of P and S in the periodic table, have also been noted. Applications of the obtained π-conjugated molecules, mainly as semiconducting materials, flame retardants, and resins hardeners, designed on the basis of five- and six-membered cyclic molecules containing ring phosphorus and sulfur atoms, are also included. This comprehensive review covers literature up to August 2020.

Abstract
The origin of the positive temperature effect in fluorescence emission of a newly designed perylene bisimide (PBI) derivative with two naphthyl units containing ortho-methoxy group (NM) at its bay positions (PBI-2NM) was elucidated. A key point is the finding of a weak hydrogen bond (<5.0 kcal mol-1 ) between the methoxy group of the NM unit and a nearby hydrogen atom of the PBI core. It is the bonding that drives co-planarization of the different aromatic units, resulting in delocalization of the π-electrons of the compound as synthesized, inducing fluorescence quenching via intramolecular charge transfer (ICT). With increasing temperature, the co-planar structure could be distorted in part, resulting in a decreased degree of ICT, and hence leading to enhanced fluorescence emission. The unique positive temperature effect in emission induced by H-bond-driven co-planarization may pave a new avenue in designing functional molecular systems complementary to conventional methods.

Abstract
The efficient synthetic route was disclosed to prepare structurally asymmetric [5]helicenes, which are substituted with either BMes2 (7B-HC) or both BMes2 and NMe2 (8B5NMe2-HC, 7B5NMe2-HC). Compared with the parent [5]helicene, these compounds show greatly enhanced fluorescence. In addition, they still retain fairly strong fluorescence in the solid state. Moreover, the complexation of 8B5NMe2-HC and 7B5NMe2-HC with fluoride can induce significant blue shift in fluorescence and the formed complexes are also highly fluorescent.

Abstract
Luminescent films have received great interest for chemo-/bio-sensing applications due to their distinct advantages over solution-based probes, such as good stability and portability, tunable shape and size, non-invasion, real-time detection, extensive suitability in gas/vapor sensing, and recycling. On the other hand, they can achieve selective and sensitive detection of chemical/biological species using special luminophores with a recognition moiety or the assembly of common luminophores and functional materials. Nowadays, the extensively used assembly techniques include drop-casting/spin-coating, Langmuir-Blodgett (LB), self-assembled monolayers (SAMs), layer-by-layer (LBL), and electrospinning. Therefore, this review summarizes the recent advances in luminescent films with these assembly techniques and their applications in chemo-/bio-sensing. We mainly focused on the discussion of the relationship between the sensing properties of the films and their architecture. Furthermore, we discussed some critical challenges existing in this field and possible solutions that have been or are being developed to overcome these challenges.

Abstract
A sulfur-free iridium(III) complex (pbi)2Ir(mtpy) (1) was successfully prepared and adopted as a Hg(II)-chemosensor with high selectivity and sensitivity. Multi-signaling responses towards Hg(II) ions were observed by UV-vis absorption, phosphorescence and electrochemistry measurements. With addition of Hg(II) ions, complex 1 presented quenched emission in its phosphorescence spectrum and the detection limit was as low as 2.5 × 10(-7) M. Additionally, its redox peak currents showed a broad linear relationship with the concentration of Hg(II) ions ranging from 0 to 500 μM, which was beneficial for the quantitative detection. Based on the (1)H NMR and ESI-MS analyses, the probing mechanism was tentatively supposed to be the Hg(2+)-induced changes in the local environment of complex 1. Such a response process was useful for achieving simple and effective detection of Hg(II) ions as well as developing more chemosensors.

Abstract
Two benzothieno[b]-fused BODIPYs, BT-BODIPY and BBT-BODIPY, in which one parent BODIPY core is fused with one and two benzothieno rings, respectively, were synthesized from BODIPYs substituted with 2-(methylsulfinyl)phenyl at the β-position. The first H2SO4-induced cyclization and deborylation afforded benzothieno[b]-fused dipyrrin derivatives, which can easily complex with BF3·OEt2 to form the desired benzothieno[b]-fused BODIPYs. It was revealed that the fusion of the benzothieno ring is more effective at extending conjugation than simple attachment of the 2-(methylthio)phenyl substituent, which presumably results from conformational restriction. Compared with the corresponding unstrained SPh-BODIPY and BSPh-BODIPY, which contain one and two 2-(methylthio)phenyl groups at the β-position, BT-BODIPY and BBT-BODIPY display red shifted absorption, increased absorptivity, and fluorescence efficiency. Furthermore, the ring fusion is also helpful to increase stability of the formed cation in BBT-BODIPY. Thus, BBT-BODIPY exhibits very intriguing properties, such as intense absorption and emission in the red region, very sharp emission spectra, and reversible oxidation and reduction potentials.

Abstract
By intelligent design, a new "turn-on" fluorescent probe (1-CN) was obtained based on the deprotection reaction of the dithioacetal promoted by Hg2+ ions, which could sense mercury ions sensitively and selectively, with the detection limit of 8×10(-7) M. Thanks to the apparent turn-on signal, 1-CN has been successfully applied to rapidly detect trace amounts of mercury ions as test strips and cell image.

Abstract
The incorporation of boron into the core structure of fused polycyclic aromatics generates compounds with highly attractive properties that have recently received significant attention. Embedding boron into the backbone of ladder or 2D poly aromatic hydrocarbons is an underexplored approach to modulate optoelectronic properties, with tricoordinate boron representing a novel acceptor moiety for organic optoelectronic applications. Furthermore, the incorporation of boron into polycyclics containing other heteroatoms (e.g., chalcogens or pnictogens) leads to more extensive structural diversity and considerable ability to modify the frontier orbital energies and character, often in a controlled manner, to fine tune material properties for specific applications. This feature article summarizes the recent key developments in this field.
