Orthometalation of Dibenzo[1,2]quinoxaline with Ruthenium(II/III), Osmium(II/III/IV), and Rhodium(III) Ions and Orthometalated [RuNO]6/7 Derivatives

Dissociation of Bipyridine and Coordination with Nitrosyl: Cyclometalated Ruthenium Nitrosyl Complex

A novel family of ruthenium nitrosyl complexes [Ru(bpy)(C^∧N)(MeCN)NO](PF₆)₂ (2a-2e, bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine, HC^∧N = 2-phenylpyridine and its derivatives) has been prepared by reacting cyclometalated ruthenium complexes [Ru(bpy)₂(C^∧N)][PF₆] (1a-1e) with NO⁺, which were comprehensively characterized by mass, IR, NMR, and UV-vis spectra as well as the single-crystal X-ray structure determinations. Herein, the coordination geometry of Ru atoms in 2a-2e is a distorted octahedron and {Ru^II-NO⁺}⁶ is present in these complexes. Theoretical calculations suggest that the reactions involving dissociation of one bipyridine and coordination with NO⁺ proceed spontaneously (ΔG < 0) and the transformation from 1a-1e to the intermediates is dominated by substituents (ΔG_RI varies from -1.19 to -1.53 eV), which influence the binding energy between Ru(II) and NO⁺ in complexes 2a-2e (-89.42 to -101.17 kcal/mol) and thus control the photorelease of NO on a certain scale. The weak absorption bands in the visible region could be attributed to the contribution of dπ(Ru^II) → π*(NO⁺), which were enhanced greatly under light, indicating the possible release of NO. The photoinduced NO, as well as singlet oxygen (¹O₂), was then confirmed by EPR spectra, and the amount of NO released from 2a-2e was estimated via Griess reagent assay. The cytotoxicity of these complexes with or without visible light irradiation was also investigated using an MTT assay.

Ruthenium-Hydride Assisted Remarkable Diversity Towards Non-Spectator Feature of Benzodifuroxan

The present article demonstrates that ruthenium-hydride [Ru^II (H)(Cl)(CO)(PPh₃ )₃ ] mediated diverse functionalization modes of benzodifuroxan (BDF) encompassing two furoxan rings. Hydride transfer from the metal precursor facilitated multiple cascade reactions involving unsymmetrical cleavage of the furoxan rings of BDF, leading to the one-pot formation of a series of ruthenium (II) coordinated functionalized ligands exhibiting bidentate κ² -N,O, κ² -N,N' and bis-bidentate μ-bis(κ² -N,O) modes. Further, a moderately stable intermediate species was also encountered in the reaction sequence in which the transformed deoxygenated ligand coordinated to the metal ion via the rarely manifested furazan ring (κ² -N,N'' mode). The products were authenticated by their single-crystal X-ray structures and other spectroscopic/analytical techniques. Redox non-innocence of the functionalized ligands in the complexes was illustrated by spectroelectrochemistry (cyclic voltammmetry, UV-Vis. and EPR) in conjunction with DFT/TD-DFT calculations. Mechanistic outline for the facile ring opening processes of BDF including interconversions of complexes (e. g. reductive ring opening) were also addressed.

Orthometalated N-(Benzophenoxazine)-o-aminophenol: Phenolato versus Phenoxyl States

The molecular and electronic structures of the orthometalated ruthenium(III) and osmium(III) complexes of N-(benzophenoxazine)-o-aminophenol (^OXLH₂) that exhibits versatile redox activities are reported. The redox chemistry of ^OXLH₂ is remarkably different from that of N-(aryl)-o-aminophenol (^APLH₂). The study established that ^OXLH₂ is redox noninnocent and is a precursor of a phenoxyl radical. One of the C-H bonds of ^OXLH₂ is activated by ions, and ^OXLH₂ reveals three different redox states as dianionic phenolato (^OXL^2-), monoanionic phenoxyl radical (^OXL^•-), and zwitterionic phenoxium cation (^OXL^±) states. The reaction of ^OXLH₂ with [Ru^II(PPh₃)₃Cl₂] in boiling toluene in air affords an orthometalated ^OXL^2- complex of ruthenium(III), trans-[(^OXL^2-)Ru^III(PPh₃)₂(Cl)] (1), whereas the similar reaction with [Os^II(PPh₃)₃Br₂] yields an orthometalated ^OXL^•- complex, cis-[(^OXL^•-)Os^III(PPh₃)Br₂] (2). 1 and 2 exhibit ligand-based reversible redox waves due to ^OXL^•-/^OXL^2-, ^OXL^±/^OXL^•-, and M^III/M^II couples. The 1 ⁺ ion is a ^OXL^•- complex of ruthenium(III). 2 ^- exhibits temperature-dependent valence tautomerism due to [Os^II(^OXL^•-) ↔ Os^III(^OXL^2-)] equilibrium. 2 ^2- is a ^OXL^2- complex of osmium(II), while 1 ²⁺ and 2 ⁺ are ^OXL^± complexes of metal(III). 2 is an oxidant and effective catalyst for oxidation of 3,5-di-tert-butylcatechol to the corresponding quinone, and the turnover number is 119.7 h^-1. The UV-vis-NIR absorption spectrum of 1 displays an NIR band at 800 nm due to an intra-ligand-charge-transfer transition, which is absent in 2 incorporating a ^OXL^•- radical. The molecular and electronic structures of 1 and 2 and their oxidized and reduced analogues were confirmed by single-crystal X-ray crystallography, variable-temperature electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy, spectroelectrochemical measurements, and density functional theory calculations.

Arylamino radical complexes of ruthenium and osmium: dual radical counter in a molecule

Radical and non-radical ruthenium and osmium complexes of 1-amino-9,10-anthraquinone (AqNH₂), which is defined as a molecule of dual radical counter, are disclosed. 1-Amido-9,10-anthraquinone (AqNH^-) complexes of the types trans-[Ru^II(AqNH^-)(PPh₃)₂(CO)Cl] (1), trans-[Os^II(AqNH^-)(PPh₃)₂(CO)Br] (2) and trans-[Ru^III(AqNH^-)(PPh₃)₂Cl₂] (3) were isolated. AqNH^- of 1-3 is redox active and undergoes oxidation reversibly at +(0.05-0.35) V to the 1-amino-9,10-anthraquinone radical (AqNH˙) and reduction at -(0.86-1.60) V to the 1-amido-9,10-anthrasemiquinonate anion radical (Aq^NHSQ˙^2-). The reaction of 2 with I₂ in CH₂Cl₂ afforded a crystalline AqNH˙ complex of the type trans-[Os^II(AqNH˙)(PPh₃)₂(CO)Br]⁺I₅^-·½I₂ (2⁺I₅^-·½I₂). AqNH˙ and Aq^NHSQ˙^2- complexes of the types trans-[Ru^II(AqNH˙)(PPh₃)₂(CO)Cl]⁺ (1⁺), trans-[Ru^III(AqNH˙)(PPh₃)₂Cl₂]⁺ (3⁺), trans-[Ru^II(Aq^NHSQ˙^2-)(PPh₃)₂(CO)Cl]^- (1^-) and trans-[Os^II(Aq^NHSQ˙^2-)(PPh₃)₂(CO)Br]^- (2^-) were generated chemically/electrochemically in solution. The electronic states of the complexes were authenticated by single crystal X-ray structure determinations of 1, 2·5/4 toluene, 3 and 2⁺I₅^-·½I₂, EPR spectroscopy and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. AqNH˙ instigates a 2c-3e p_π-d_π interaction and the length in 2⁺I₅^-·½I₂, 1.978(5) Å, is relatively shorter than the Os^II-NH_Aq^- length, 2.037(2) Å, while the Aq-NH˙ bond, 1.365(8) Å, is longer than the Aq-NH^- bond, 1.328(3) Å. DFT calculations predicted that the atomic spin is delocalized over the ligand backbone (1⁺, 56%) particularly in one of the p-orbitals of the nitrogen and the metal atoms of the 1⁺ and 2⁺ ions, while the spin is dominantly localized on the anthraquinone fragment of the 1^- and 2^- ions. TD DFT calculations were employed to elucidate the origins of the lower energy absorption bands of the neutral complexes. Hypsochromic shifts of the UV-vis-NIR absorption maximum during 1→1⁺, 2→2⁺ and 3→3⁺ conversions were recorded by spectroelectrochemical measurements.
