Comparison of the Electronic Properties of Diarylamido-Based PNZ Pincer Ligands: Redox Activity at the Ligand and Donor Ability Toward the Metal

Activation of SO2F2 at a Rhodium PNP Pincer Complex: Ligand Supported S-F Bond Cleavage to Generate NSO2F Derivatives

The κ2-(P,N)-phosphine ligand precursor NH(CH2CH2PCy2)2 can be used for the synthesis of the rhodium(I) complex [Rh(CO){ĸ3-(P,N,P)-Cy2PC2H4NHC2H4PCy2}][Cl] (1). The deprotonated complex [Rh(CO){ĸ3-(P,N,P)-Cy2PC2H4NC2H4PCy2}] (2) shows a cooperative reactivity of the PNP ligand in the activation reaction of SO2F2 to yield the rhodium fluorido complex trans-[Rh(F)(CO){ĸ2-(P,P)-Cy2PC2H4N(SO2F)C2H4PCy2}]2 (3) by S-F bond cleavage. It is remarkable that no reaction was observed when 3 was treated with hydrogen sources e. g. dihydrogen, organosilicon compounds such as triethylsilane or TMS-CF3 and different fluorine sources such as SF4 or Selectfluor®. However, the treatment of complex 3 with XeF2 in the presence of CsF resulted in the formation of the unique fluorido rhodium(III) complex cis,trans-[Rh(F)3(CO){ĸ2-(P,P)-Cy2PC2H4N(SO2F)C2H4PCy2}]2 (4). In the presence of pyridine(HF)X or BF3 the fluorido complex 3 converted into the dicationic complexes [Rh(CO){ĸ2-(P,P)-Cy2PC2H4N(SO2F)C2H4PCy2}]2[XF]2, X=HF (5) or BF3 (6), respectively.

A bis(PCN) palladium pincer complex with a remarkably planar 2,5-diarylpyrazine core

A bimetallic Pd complex of a bis(pincer) with a diarylpyrazine core has been prepared. The complex demonstrates near-perfect coplanarity of the aromatic core, is fluorescent under UV irradiation, and displays two quasi-reversible reduction events.

Modulation of Metal Carbonyl Stretching Frequencies in the Second Coordination Sphere through the Internal Stark Effect

Spectroscopic and computational examination of a homologous series of rhodium(I) pybox carbonyl complexes has revealed a correlation between the conformation of the flanking aryl-substituted oxazoline donors and the carbonyl stretching frequency. This relationship is also observed experimentally for octahedral rhodium(III) and ruthenium(II) variants and cannot be explained through the classical, Dewar-Chatt-Duncanson, interpretation of metal-carbonyl bonding. Instead, these findings are reconciled by local changes in the magnitude of the electric field that is projected along the metal-carbonyl vector: the internal Stark effect.

Distinct modes of Si-H binding to Rh in complexes of a phosphine-diarylamido-silane (SiNP) pincer ligand

Syntheses of Rh complexes of the phosphine-amido-silane SiNP ligand are reported. The reaction of the parent (SiNP)H ligand (4) with 0.5 equiv. [(COE)RhCl]₂ (COE = cis-cyclooctene) in the presence of NaN(SiME₃)₂ resulted in the formation of (SiNP)Rh(COE) (5). Compound 5 was converted to a series of (SiNP)Rh(P(OR)₃) complexes 6-10 (R = Ph, ⁱPr, ⁿBu, Et, or Me) by treatment with the corresponding phosphite. NMR and XRD structural data, as well as the DFT computational analysis indicate that compounds 5-10 are divided into two structural Types (A and B), differing in the nature of the interaction of the Si-H bond of the SiNP ligand with Rh.

Diarylamines with the Neighboring Pyridyl Group: Synthesis and Modulation of the Amine Functionality via Intramolecular H-Bonding

New pyridyl-containing diarylamines were obtained via Cu-assisted reductive amination of the ortho-2-pyridylarylboronic acids. Comparative analysis of the spectral and electrochemical data obtained for new diarylamines and their pyridyl-free counterparts revealed the intramolecular H-bond (IMHB) formation which significantly influences the properties of the amino group. The electron density at the N atom of the amino group is increased due to partial weakening of the N–H bond, although the BDE and activation energy for the H-atom abstraction is increased due to the chelating effect of two N atoms. The ortho-pyridyl-containing diarylamines are more prone to be oxidized as compared to their pyridyl-free counterparts; the shift in the oxidation potential values correlates with the strength of the intramolecular H-bonding which can be tuned by inserting substituents in the pyridyl or phenyl rings. The IMHB is reserved even in polar solvents having a significant H-acceptor ability (such as DMSO) but can be destroyed in methanol, testifying in favor of the dynamic nature of the H-bonding.

Platinum(ii) complexes of benzannulated N∧N−∧O-amido ligands: bright orange phosphors with long-lived excited states

Synthesis and reactivity of iridium complexes of a macrocyclic PNP pincer ligand

Having recently reported on the synthesis and rhodium complexes of the novel macrocyclic pincer ligand PNP-14, which is derived from lutidine and features terminal phosphine donors trans-substituted with a tetradecamethylene linker (Dalton Trans., 2020, 49, 2077-2086 and Dalton Trans., 2020, 49, 16649-16652), we herein describe our findings critically examining the chemistry of iridium homologues. The five-coordinate iridium(i) and iridium(iii) complexes [Ir(PNP-14)(η2:η2-cyclooctadiene)][BArF4] and [Ir(PNP-14)(2,2'-biphenyl)][BArF4] are readily prepared and shown to be effective precursors for the generation of iridium(iii) dihydride dihydrogen, iridium(i) bis(ethylene), and iridium(i) carbonyl derivatives that highlight important periodic trends by comparison to rhodium counterparts. Reaction of [Ir(PNP-14)H2(H2)][BArF4] with 3,3-dimethylbutene induced triple C-H bond activation of the methylene chain, yielding an iridium(iii) allyl hydride derivative [Ir(PNP-14*)H][BArF4], whilst catalytic homocoupling of 3,3-dimethylbutyne into Z-tBuC[triple bond, length as m-dash]CCHCHtBu could be promoted at RT by [Ir(PNP-14)(η2:η2-cyclooctadiene)][BArF4] (TOFinitial = 28 h-1). The mechanism of the latter is proposed to involve formation and direct reaction of a vinylidene derivative with HC[triple bond, length as m-dash]CtBu outside of the macrocyclic ring and this suggestion is supported experimentally by isolation and crystallographic characterisation of a catalyst deactivation product.

Pseudo-octahedral nickel(ii) complexes of strongly absorbing benzannulated pincer-type amido ligands: ligand-based redox and non-Aufbau electronic behaviour

The synthesis, structures and electronic characterization of three strongly coloured, pseudo-octahedral Ni(ii) complexes supported by redox-active diarylamido ligands featuring benzannulated N-heterocyclic donor arms are reported. The S = 1 paramagnets each present two singly occupied molecular orbitals (SOMOs) identified as metal-based by density functional theory (DFT), consistent with solid-state and solution magnetism measurements. Upon applying oxidative potentials, non-Aufbau behaviour leads to the appearance of intense and well-defined absorption features extending into the near IR (NIR). The attribution of these features to the onset of aminyl radical character through ligand-based redox is corroborated by exceptionally strong intervalence charge-transfer (IVCT) transitions ascribed to electronic communication between two Namido moieties across a Ni(ii) bridge.

Terminal Alkyne Coupling Reactions Through a Ring: Effect of Ring Size on Rate and Regioselectivity

Terminal alkyne coupling reactions promoted by rhodium(I) complexes of macrocyclic NHC-based pincer ligands-which feature dodecamethylene, tetradecamethylene or hexadecamethylene wingtip linkers viz. [Rh(CNC-n)(C2 H4 )][BArF 4 ] (n=12, 14, 16; ArF =3,5-(CF3 )2 C6 H3 )-have been investigated, using the bulky alkynes HC≡CtBu and HC≡CAr' (Ar'=3,5-tBu2 C6 H3 ) as substrates. These stoichiometric reactions proceed with formation of rhodium(III) alkynyl alkenyl derivatives and produce rhodium(I) complexes of conjugated 1,3-enynes by C-C bond reductive elimination through the annulus of the ancillary ligand. The intermediates are formed with orthogonal regioselectivity, with E-alkenyl complexes derived from HC≡CtBu and gem-alkenyl complexes derived from HC≡CAr', and the reductive elimination step is appreciably affected by the ring size of the macrocycle. For the homocoupling of HC≡CtBu, E-tBuC≡CCH=CHtBu is produced via direct reductive elimination from the corresponding rhodium(III) alkynyl E-alkenyl derivatives with increasing efficacy as the ring is expanded. In contrast, direct reductive elimination of Ar'C≡CC(=CH2 )Ar' is encumbered relative to head-to-head coupling of HC≡CAr' and it is only with the largest macrocyclic ligand studied that the two processes are competitive. These results showcase how macrocyclic ligands can be used to interrogate the mechanism and tune the outcome of terminal alkyne coupling reactions, and are discussed with reference to catalytic reactions mediated by the acyclic homologue [Rh(CNC-Me)(C2 H4 )][BArF 4 ] and solvent effects.

Redox Communication between Two Diarylamido/Bis(phosphine) (PNP)M Moieties Bridged by Ynediyl Linkers (M = Ni, Pd, Pt)

A series of binuclear homo- and heterobimetallic complexes of the general type (PNP)M-[linker]-M(PNP) have been prepared (M = Ni, Pd, Pt; PNP = a diarylamido/bis(phosphine) pincer ligand; -[linker]- = -C≡C-, -C≡CC≡C-, -C≡CC₆H₄C≡C-). Each (PNP)M site can be oxidized by one electron, and this work reports the investigation of the mixed-valence behavior in terms of the communication between the two redox sites and the degree of the delocalization in the monooxidized cation. The compounds were evaluated using cyclic voltammetry, UV-vis-NIR and EPR spectroscopy, X-ray crystallography, and DFT calculations. The complex with the longest examined linker, (PNP)Ni-C≡CC₆H₄C≡C-Ni(PNP) (9Ni), exhibited no discernible communication between the redox sites. The homobimetallic complexes (PNP)M-C≡CC≡C-M(PNP) (6M) displayed a lower degree of communication in comparison to the -C≡C- linker analogues (PNP)M-C≡C-M(PNP) (3M). Within each of these two subsets, the relative degree of communication and delocalization was determined to be Pd < Ni ≤ Pt. On the Robin-Day scale, compounds 6M can be assigned class I for M = Pd and class II for M = Ni, Pt. Complex 3Pd also falls into class II, while 3Ni and 3Pt may be viewed as borderline class II/III cases. It is likely that the communication in the Ni systems has the advantage of the smaller size of Ni, resulting in a greater physical proximity of the redox sites, while the 5d metal Pt possesses the greatest ability for orbital interaction with the -C≡C- linker.

Concerted aryl-sulfur reductive elimination from PNP pincer-supported Co(iii) and subsequent Co(i)/Co(iii) comproportionation

This report discloses a combined experimental and computational study aimed at understanding C-S reductive elimination from Co(iii) supported by a diarylamido/bis(phosphine) PNP pincer ligand. Divalent (PNP)Co-aryl complexes could be easily oxidized to five-coordinate Co(iii) derivatives, and anion metathesis provided five-coordinate (PNP)Co(Ar)(SAr') complexes of Co(iii). In contrast to their previously described (POCOP)Co(Ar)(SAr') analogs, but similarly to the (PNP)Rh(Ar)(SAr') and (POCOP)Rh(Ar)(SAr') analogs, (PNP)Co(Ar)(SAr') undergo C-S reductive elimination with the formation of the desired diarylsulfide product ArSAr'. DFT studies and experimental observations are consistent with a concerted process. However, in contrast to the Rh analogs, the immediate product of such reductive elimination, the unobserved Co(i) complex (PNP)Co, un-dergoes rapid comproportionation with the (PNP)Co(Ar)(SAr') starting material to give Co(ii) compounds (PNP)Co-Ar and (PNP)Co-SAr'.

Synthesis and group 9 complexes of macrocyclic PCP and POCOP pincer ligands

The synthesis of macrocyclic variants of commonly employed phosphine-based pincer (pro)ligands derived from meta-xylene (PCP-14) and resorcinol (POCOP-14) is described, where the P-donors are trans-substituted with a tetradecamethylene linker. The former was accomplished using a seven-step asymmetric procedure involving (-)-cis-1-amino-2-indanol as a chiral auxiliary and ring-closing olefin metathesis. A related, but non-diastereoselective route was employed for the latter, which consequently necessitated chromatographic separation from the cis-substituted by-product. The proligands are readily metalated and homologous series of M^I(CO) and M^IIICl₂(CO) derivatives (M = Rh, Ir) have been isolated and fully characterised in solution and the solid state. Metal hydride complexes are generated during the synthesis of the former and have been characterised in situ using NMR spectroscopy.

Synthesis and rhodium complexes of macrocyclic PNP and PONOP pincer ligands

The synthesis of macrocyclic variants of commonly employed phosphine-based pincer ligands derived from lutidine (PNP-14) and 2,6-dihydroxypyridine (PONOP-14) is described, where the P-donors are trans-substituted with a tetradecamethylene linker. This was accomplished using an eight-step procedure involving borane protection, ring-closing olefin metathesis, chromatographic separation from the cis-substituted diastereomers, and borane deprotection. The rhodium coordination chemistry of these ligands has been explored, aided by the facile synthesis of 2,2'-biphenyl (biph) adducts [Rh(PNP-14)(biph)][BAr^F₄] and [Rh(PONOP-14)(biph)][BAr^F₄] (Ar^F = 3,5-(CF₃)₂C₆H₃). Subsequent hydrogenolysis enabled generation of dihydrogen, ethylene and carbonyl derivatives; notably the ν(CO) bands of the carbonyl complexes provide a means to compare the donor properties of the new pincer ligands with established acyclic congeners.

Probing the Donor Properties of Pincer Ligands Using Rhodium Carbonyl Fragments: An Experimental and Computational Case Study

Metal carbonyls are commonly employed probes for quantifying the donor properties of monodentate ligands. With a view to extending this methodology to mer-tridentate "pincer" ligands, the spectroscopic properties [ν(CO), δ 13C, 1 J RhC] of rhodium(I) and rhodium(III) carbonyl complexes of the form [Rh(pincer)(CO)][BArF 4] and [Rh(pincer)Cl2(CO)][BArF 4] have been critically analysed for four pyridyl-based pincer ligands, with two flanking oxazoline (NNN), phosphine (PNP), or N-heterocyclic carbene (CNC) donors. Our investigations indicate that the carbonyl bands of the rhodium(I) complexes are the most diagnostic, with frequencies discernibly decreasing in the order NNN > PNP > CNC. To gain deeper insight, a DFT-based energy decomposition analysis was performed and identified important bonding differences associated with the conformation of the pincer backbone, which clouds straightforward interpretation of the experimental IR data. A correlation between the difference in carbonyl stretching frequencies Δν(CO) and calculated thermodynamics of the RhI/RhIII redox pairs was identified and could prove to be a useful mechanistic tool.

Synthesis of nickel and palladium complexes with diarylamido-based unsymmetrical pincer ligands and application for norbornene polymerization

A set of diarylamido-based unsymmetrical [PNNox] pincer ligands containing a chiral oxazoline ring have been synthesized and their nickel and palladium complexes [(2-PPh2(R1)ArN(R1)Ar-2-(R)oxazoline)MCl] (R1 = 4-H, R = (S)-4-iPr, M = Pd (Pd1); R1 = 4-H, R = (S)-4-Bn, M = Pd (Pd2); R1 = 4-H, R = (S)-4-Ph, M = Pd (Pd3); R1 = 4-Me, R = (S)-4-Bn, M = Pd (Pd4); R1 = 4-Me, R = (S)-4-Ph, M = Pd (Pd5); R1 = 4-H, R = 4-Me2, M = Pd (Pd6); R1 = 4-H, R = Benzo[d]-, M = Pd (Pd7); R1 = 4-H, R = (S)-4-Bn, M = Ni (Ni1); R1 = 4-H, R = (S)-4-Ph, M = Ni (Ni2); R1 = 4-Me, R = (S)-4-Bn, M = Ni (Ni3); R1 = 4-Me, R = (S)-4-Ph, M = Pd (Ni4)) were tested to show high catalytic activities for polymerization of norbornene. After activation of methylaluminoxane (MAO), all the nickel and palladium complexes could catalyze the polymerization of norbornene to yield vinyl-type polymers with activities up to 40.3 × 105 g of PNB (mol of Pd)-1 h-1. The copolymerization of norbornene with functional norbornene comonomers was also investigated by catalyst Pd2, accompanied by decreased catalytic activity and low incorporation of functional comonomers.

Bimetallic Complexes Supported by a Redox-Active Ligand with Fused Pincer-Type Coordination Sites

The remarkable chemistry of mononuclear complexes featuring tridentate, meridionally chelating "pincer" ligands has stimulated the development of ligand frameworks containing multiple pincer sites. Here, the coordination chemistry of a novel pentadentate ligand (L(N3O2)) that provides two closely spaced NNO pincer-type compartments fused together at a central diarylamido unit is described. The trianionic L(N3O2) chelate supports homobimetallic structures in which each M(II) ion (M = Co, Cu, Zn) is bound in a meridional fashion by the bridging diarylamido N atom and O,N-donors of the salicyaldimine arms. The metal centers are also coordinated by a mono- or bidentate auxiliary ligand (L(aux)), resulting in complexes with the general form [M2(L(N3O2))(L(aux))2](+) (where L(aux) = 1-methyl-benzimidazole (1MeBI), 2,2'-bipyridine (bpy), 4,4'-dibromo-2,2'-bipyridine (bpy(Br2)), or (S)-2-(4-isopropyl-4,5-dihydrooxazolyl)pyridine (S-(iPr)OxPy)). The fused nature of the NNO pincer sites results in short metal-metal distances ranging from 2.70 Å for [Co2(L(N3O2)) (bpy)2](+) to 3.28 Å for [Zn2(L(N3O2)) (bpy)2](+), as revealed by X-ray crystallography. The complexes possess C2 symmetry due to the twisting of the aryl rings of the μ-NAr2 core; spectroscopic studies indicate that chiral L(aux) ligands, such as S-(iPr)OxPy, are capable of controlling the helical sense of the L(N3O2) scaffold. Since the four- or five-coordinate M(II) centers are linked solely by the amido moiety, each features an open coordination site in the intermetallic region, allowing for the possibility of metal-metal cooperativity in small-molecule activation. Indeed, the dicobalt(II) complex [Co2(L(N3O2)) (bpy(Br2))2](+) reacts with O2 to yield a dicobalt(III) species with a μ-1,2-peroxo ligand. The bpy-containing complexes exhibit rich electrochemical properties due to multiple metal- and ligand-based redox events across a wide (3.0 V) potential window. Using electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy and density functional theory (DFT), it was determined that one-electron oxidation of [Co2(L(N3O2)) (bpy)2](+) results in formation of a S = 1/2 species with a L(N3O2)-based radical coupled to low-spin Co(II) centers.

Ligand survey results in identification of PNP pincer complexes of iridium as long-lived and chemoselective catalysts for dehydrogenative borylation of terminal alkynes

Following the report on the successful use of SiNN pincer complexes of iridium as catalysts for dehydrogenative borylation of terminal alkynes (DHBTA) to alkynylboronates, this work examined a wide variety of related pincer ligands in the supporting role in DHBTA. The ligand selection included both new and previously reported ligands and was developed to explore systematic changes to the SiNN framework (the 8-(2-diisopropylsilylphenyl)aminoquinoline). Surprisingly, only the diarylamido/bis(phosphine) PNP system showed any DHBTA reactivity. The specific PNP ligand (bearing two diisopropylphosphino side donors) used in the screen showed DHBTA activity inferior to SiNN. However, taking advantage of the ligand optimization opportunities presented by the PNP system via the changes in the substitution at phosphorus led to the discovery of a catalyst whose activity, longevity, and scope far exceeded that of the original SiNN archetype. Several Ir complexes were prepared in a model PNP system and evaluated as potential intermediates in the catalytic cycle. Among them, the (PNP)Ir diboryl complex and the borylvinylidene complex were shown to be less competent in catalysis and thus likely not part of the catalytic cycle.

Cyclometallation of the NNN pincer ligand in complexes of platinum

Platinum complexes of the diimino/carbazolyl NNN pincer ligand have been prepared and characterized. Facile cyclometallation of the mesityl substituent was observed.
