Alumazene Adducts with Pyridines: Synthesis, Structure, and Stability Studies

From polygons to polyhedra through intermediate structures. A shape measures study of six-atom inorganic rings and clusters

Among the wealth of well-established molecular structures, inorganic rings and clusters present an overwhelming variety of geometries that chemists try to describe with a limited assortment of regular polygons and polyhedra. In the case of six-atom structures we usually employ the hexagon, the pentagonal pyramid, the trigonal prism and the octahedron. More often than not, however, real world structures deviate from those ideal geometries, and we try to cope with non-ideality by adding adjectives such as distorted, twisted, puckered or flattened, additionally nuanced by adverbs such as slightly, significantly or severely. This contribution presents a systematic structural perspective of six-atom groups in molecules by means of a continuous shape measures (CShM) analysis. The shape of a group of N points is defined by all the sets of 3 N Cartesian coordinates that can be generated by rigid translation, rotation, or isotropic scale change. Among all possible arrangements of N points in space, we select as reference shapes the corresponding regular N-vertex polygons and polyhedra, together with univocally defined combinations thereof (e.g., two coplanar or perpendicular edge-sharing squares). The present CShM study allows us to classify most of the structures not only by their closeness to a particular regular shape, but also by quantifying their position along minimal distortion interconversion pathways between two regular shapes.

Pendant ancillary ligand switches off auto-oxidation of group 13 metal alkyl compounds bearing non-bulky alkyl groups

The reaction of 3,5-di-2-pyridyl-1,2,4-triazole with excess Al(CH3)3 and Ga(CH3)3 afforded (3,5-di-2-pyridyl-1,2,4-triazolate)Al(CH3)2•3Al(CH3)3 (1) and (3,5-di-2-pyridyl-1,2,4-triazolate) Ga(CH3)2•3Ga(CH3)3 (2) respectively. 1 and 2 reacted with oxygen gas to produce (CH3)2M(µ-3,5-di-2-pyridyl-1,2,4-triazolate)(µ-OCH3)M(CH3)2 (M = Al, 3; M = Ga, 4). 3 and 4 contain the non-bulky dimethylalumino moiety, yet they are indefinitely stable in the presence of oxygen gas. This increased stability towards oxygen is due to ancillary 2-pyridyl groups bonding to the metal centers producing a pseudo-trigonal pyramidal Al and Ga environments. This environment blocks oxygen from further inserting into the M-C bond. The Al-N(pyridine) and Ga-N(pyridine) bonds reported herein are extremely elongated yet inactive towards dissociation due to the chelate effect.

Donor-acceptor complexes of borazines

Donor-acceptor complexes of borazine (BZ) and its substituted derivatives with Lewis acids (A = MCl(3), MBr(3); M = B, Al, Ga) and Lewis bases (D = NH(3), Py) have been theoretically studied at the B3LYP/TZVP level of theory. The calculations showed that complexes with Lewis bases only are unstable with respect to dissociation into their components, while complexes with Lewis acids only (such as aluminum and gallium trihalides) are stable. It was shown that formation of ternary D→BZ→A complexes may be achieved by subsequent introduction of the Lewis acid (acceptor A) and the Lewis base (donor D) to borazine. The nature of substituents in the borazine ring, their number, and position were shown to have only minor influence on the stability of ternary D→BZ→A complexes due to the compensation effect. Much weaker acceptor properties of borazine are explained in terms of large endothermic pyramidalization energy of the boron center in the borazine ring. In contrast to borazine, binary complexes of the isoelectronic benzene were predicted to be weakly bound even in the case of very strong Lewis acids; ternary DA complexes of benzene were predicted to be unbound. The donor-acceptor complex formation was predicted to significantly reduce both the endothermicity (by 70-95 kJ mol(-1)) and the activation energy (by 40-70 kJ mol(-1)) for the borazine hydrogenation. Thus, activation of the borazine ring by Lewis acids may be a facile way for the hydrogenation of borazines and polyborazines.
