Acid–Base-Driven Interconversion between a Mononuclear Complex and Supramolecular Coordination Polymers in a Terpyridine-Functionalized Dioxocyclam Ligand

Modulation of the structural information in shape-defined heterocyclic strands: the case of a (pyridine-hydrazone)2pyrazine ligand

Metal ions (Ag⁺, Cd²⁺, Eu³⁺, Sm³⁺) and protons can, through coordination and protonation, modulate in three specific ways the structural information contained in the pyrazine-based heterocyclic strand L (obtained from 2,5-bis(methylhydrazino)pyrazine and 2 equivalents of 2-pyridinecarboxaldehyde), thus generating two linear rod-like conformations and a bent one. This conformational diversity is associated with a structural one that consists of two diprotonated forms (H₂L(PF₆)₂ and H₂L(CF₃SO₃)₂), a polymeric architecture [AgL]_n(CF₃SO₃)_n, two rack-like complexes ([Eu₂H₂L₃(CF₃SO₃)₆](PF₆)₂ and [Sm₂H₂L₃(CF₃SO₃)₆](PF₆)₂) and a grid-like structure ([Cd₄L₄](CF₃SO₃)₈).

Redox-Responsive Colloidal Particles Based on Coordination Polymers Incorporating Viologen Units

Colloidal particles based on supramolecular polymers are emerging as promising functional materials because of their intrinsic dynamic features and the possibility of stimuli responsivity. In this work, ≈200 nm self-assembled redox-responsive colloidal particles made of 1D-coordination polymers were readily prepared. In these metallopolymers, organic entities made of bis(viologen) groups covalently associated with terpyridine units are spontaneously bridged by Zn²⁺ cations through the formation of coordination bonds. The properties of these particles were analyzed and their redox activities investigated. Upon reduction of the viologen units, the formation of π-dimers between the reduced viologen moieties was demonstrated by spectroscopic experiments. It was shown that intermolecular π-dimers (i.e., between different polymer chains) that do not exist in homogeneous polymer solutions were, nevertheless, formed in the particle's structure because of the effects of confinement. The presence of these π-dimers allows stabilization of the charge in the colloids.

Redox-Triggered Folding of Self-Assembled Coordination Polymers incorporating Viologen Units

We report the study of stimuli-responsive Zn^II and Fe^II coordination polymers (MC3⁴⁺ or MC2⁴⁺ with M=Fe²⁺ or Zn²⁺ ). These soluble metallopolymers were formed spontaneously by reaction of an organic ligand (C3⁴⁺ or C2⁴⁺ ) with one molar equivalent of metal ions. The C3⁴⁺ and C2⁴⁺ ligands incorporate two chelating terpyridine groups bridged by a redox responsive hinge featuring two viologen units (viologen=N,N'-dialkyl-4,4'-bipyridinium) linked either with propyl (C3⁴⁺ ) or ethyl (C2⁴⁺ ) chains. The viologen units in the polymer chains were reduced (1 e^- per viologen group) either by bulk electrolysis or by visible-light irradiation carried out in the presence of a photosensitizer. The 1 e^- reduction of the viologen units in the MC2⁴⁺ polymers induced a slight decrease in the viscosity of the solutions due to a modification of the overall charge carried by the metallopolymers. In strong contrast, reduction of coordination polymers involving propyl linkers (MC3⁴⁺ ) led to a remarkable increase (≈+400 %) in observed viscosity. This reversible effect was attributed to a folding of the polymer chains triggered by π-dimerization of the photo-generated viologen cation radicals.

Metals, macrocycles and molecular assemblies - macrocyclic complexes in metallo-supramolecular chemistry

In this tutorial review the use of macrocyclic complexes as building blocks in a selection of supramolecular systems is discussed with emphasis on the properties, such as enhanced stabilities, that cyclic ligands and their complexes may impart on the resulting assemblies. An aim of the review is to exemplify the versatility of macrocyclic ligand complexes for use as components in a range of both discrete and polymeric systems. The use of macrocyclic systems for controlling CuI aggregation, as scaffolds for metal-cluster formation, as the cyclic components in interlocked catenane and rotaxane structures, for constructing assemblies based on macrocycle exo-coordination, for forming columnar stacks, as well as their roles as both structural and redox centres in a range of coordination polymer types are all presented.

Metallo-supramolecular gels based on a multitopic cyclam bis-terpyridine platform

The domain of soluble metallopolymers (i.e., polymers spontaneously obtained from the self-assembly of metal ions and polytopic bridging ligands) is promising for the construction of novel materials with perspectives in magnetic, redox, optical, electrochromic, or mechanical properties. We report the preparation and characterization of metallo-supramolecular gels based on a multitopic cyclam bis-terpyridine platform (CHTT) that are representative of a second generation of molecular gels exhibiting "intelligent" properties. The systems were characterized by UV-visible spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, viscosimetry, rheology, and small-angle neutron scattering (SANS). A basic analysis of the viscosity taking into account the interplay of hydrodynamic versus Brownian motions of 1D species is proposed. SANS data demonstrate the formation of rod-like species whose radius R and aspect ratio f = L/R were extracted. Rheological features are typical of weak gels having storage moduli of more than 1 order of magnitude weaker than for ordinary molecular organogels. These new molecular materials exhibit interesting properties: (i) chemosensitivity, with the gelation being dependent on the type of metal, stoichiometry M/CHTT, solvent, and counterion; (ii) electro-sensitivity: the Co(II)/CHTT system can be electrochemically and reversibly commuted between the gel (red) and liquid (green) states; and (iii) mechanical sensitivity, with the system being able to cycle from weakly to highly viscous states upon fast application/suppression of a shearing stress.
