Abstract
Mixed spin-(1/2,1/2,1) trimer with two different Landé g factors and two different exchange couplings is considered. The main feature of the model is nonconserving magnetization. The Hamiltonian of the system is diagonalized analytically. We presented a detailed analysis of the ground-state properties, revealing several possible ground-state phase diagrams and magnetization profiles. The main focus is on how nonconserving magnetization affects quantum entanglement. We have found that nonconserving magnetization can bring a continuous dependence of the entanglement quantifying parameter (negativity) on the magnetic field within the same eigenstate, while for the case of uniform g factors it is a constant. The main result is an essential enhancement of the entanglement in the case of uniform couplings for one pair of spins caused by an arbitrary small difference in the values of g factors. This enhancement is robust and brings almost a sevenfold increase of the negativity. We have also found a weakening of entanglement for other cases. Thus, nonconserving magnetization offers a broad opportunity to manipulate the entanglement by means of a magnetic field.

Abstract
Strong electron correlation plays an important role in transition-metal and heavy-metal chemistry, magnetic molecules, bond breaking, biradicals, excited states, and many functional materials, but it provides a significant challenge for modern electronic structure theory. The treatment of strongly correlated systems usually requires a multireference method to adequately describe spin densities and near-degeneracy correlation. However, quantitative computation of dynamic correlation with multireference wave functions is often difficult or impractical. Multiconfiguration pair-density functional theory (MC-PDFT) provides a way to blend multiconfiguration wave function theory and density functional theory to quantitatively treat both near-degeneracy correlation and dynamic correlation in strongly correlated systems; it is more affordable than multireference perturbation theory, multireference configuration interaction, or multireference coupled cluster theory and more accurate for many properties than Kohn–Sham density functional theory. This perspective article provides a brief introduction to strongly correlated systems and previously reviewed progress on MC-PDFT followed by a discussion of several recent developments and applications of MC-PDFT and related methods, including localized-active-space MC-PDFT, generalized active-space MC-PDFT, density-matrix-renormalization-group MC-PDFT, hybrid MC-PDFT, multistate MC-PDFT, spin–orbit coupling, analytic gradients, and dipole moments. We also review the more recently introduced multiconfiguration nonclassical-energy functional theory (MC-NEFT), which is like MC-PDFT but allows for other ingredients in the nonclassical-energy functional. We discuss two new kinds of MC-NEFT methods, namely multiconfiguration density coherence functional theory and machine-learned functionals. This feature article overviews recent work on active spaces, matrix product reference states, treatment of quasidegeneracy, hybrid theory, density-coherence functionals, machine-learned functionals, spin–orbit coupling, gradients, and dipole moments.![]()

Abstract
Molecular nanomagnets encompass a wide range of coordination complexes possessing several potential applications. A formidable challenge in realizing these potential applications lies in controlling the magnetic properties of these clusters. Microscopic spin Hamiltonian (SH) parameters describe the magnetic properties of these clusters, and viable ways to control these SH parameters are highly desirable. Computational tools play a proactive role in this area, where SH parameters such as isotropic exchange interaction (J), anisotropic exchange interaction (Jx, Jy, Jz), double exchange interaction (B), zero-field splitting parameters (D, E) and g-tensors can be computed reliably using X-ray structures. In this feature article, we have attempted to provide a holistic view of the modelling of these SH parameters of molecular magnets. The determination of J includes various class of molecules, from di- and polynuclear Mn complexes to the {3d-Gd}, {Gd-Gd} and {Gd-2p} class of complexes. The estimation of anisotropic exchange coupling includes the exchange between an isotropic metal ion and an orbitally degenerate 3d/4d/5d metal ion. The double-exchange section contains some illustrative examples of mixed valance systems, and the section on the estimation of zfs parameters covers some mononuclear transition metal complexes possessing very large axial zfs parameters. The section on the computation of g-anisotropy exclusively covers studies on mononuclear Dy(III) and Er(III) single-ion magnets. The examples depicted in this article clearly illustrate that computational tools not only aid in interpreting and rationalizing the observed magnetic properties but possess the potential to predict new generation MNMs.

Abstract
Density functional calculations have been performed on a series of {Re(IV)-M(II)} (M = Mn(), Fe(), Co(), Ni(), Cu()) complexes to compute the magnetic exchange interaction between the Re(IV) and M(II) ions, and understand the mechanism of magnetic coupling in this series. DFT calculations yield J values of -5.54 cm(-1), +0.44 cm(-1), +10.5 cm(-1), +4.54 cm(-1) and +19 cm(-1) for complexes respectively, and these estimates are in general agreement with the experimental reports. Using molecular orbital (MO) and overlap integral analysis, we have established a mechanism of coupling for a {3d-5d} pair and the proposed mechanism rationalises both the sign and the magnitude of J values observed in this series. Our proposed mechanism of coupling has five contributing factors: (i) (Re)dyz-dyz(3d) overlap, (ii) (Re)dxz-dxz(3d) overlap, (iii) (Re)dxy-dxy(3d) overlap, (iv) (Re)eg-t2g(3d) overlaps and (v) (Re)eg-eg(3d) overlaps. Here, the first two terms are found to contribute to the antiferromagnetic part of the exchange, while the other three contribute to the ferromagnetic part. The last two terms correspond to the cross-interactions and also contribute to the ferromagnetic part of the exchange. A record high ferromagnetic J value observed for the {Re(IV)-Cu(II)} pair in complex is found to be due to a significant cross interaction between the dz(2) orbital of the Re(IV) ion and the dx(2)-y(2) orbital of the Cu(ii) ion. Magneto-structural correlations are developed for Re-C and M-N bond lengths and Re-C-N and M-N-C bond angles. Among the developed correlations, the M-N-C bond angle is found to be the most sensitive parameter which influences the sign and strength of J values in this series. The J values are found to be more positive (or less negative) as the angle increases, indicating stronger ferromagnetic coupling at linear M-N-C angles. Apart from the magnetic exchange interaction, we have also estimated the magnetic anisotropy of [ReCl4(CN)2](2-) and [(DMF)4(CN)M(II)(CN)] (M(II)-Fe(II), Co(II) and Ni(II)) units using the state-of-the-art ab initio CASSCF/PT2/RASSI-SO/SINGLE_ANISO approach. The calculated D and E values for these building units are found to be in agreement with the available experimental results. Particularly a large positive D computed for the [ReCl4(CN)2](2-) unit was found to arise from dxz/dyz → dxy excitations corresponding to the low-lying doublet states. Similarly, a very large positive D value computed for Fe(II) and Co(II) units are also rationalised based on the corresponding ground state electronic configurations computed. The non-collinearity of the Re(IV) ion and the M(II) ion axial anisotropy (DZZ) axis are found to diminish the anisotropy of the building unit, leading to the observation of moderate relaxation barriers for these molecules.

Abstract
The ligand field density functional theory (LFDFT) algorithm is extended to treat the electronic structure and properties of systems with three-open-shell electron configurations, exemplified in this work by the calculation of the core and semi-core 1s, 2s, and 3s one-electron excitations in compounds containing transition metal ions. The work presents a model to non-empirically resolve the multiplet energy levels arising from the three-open-shell systems of non-equivalent ns, 3d, and 4p electrons and to calculate the oscillator strengths corresponding to the electric-dipole 3d m → ns 13d m 4p 1 transitions, with n = 1, 2, 3 and m = 0, 1, 2, …, 10 involved in the s electron excitation process. Using the concept of ligand field, the Slater-Condon integrals, the spin-orbit coupling constants, and the parameters of the ligand field potential are determined from density functional theory (DFT). Therefore, a theoretical procedure using LFDFT is established illustrating the spectroscopic details at the atomic scale that can be valuable in the analysis and characterization of the electronic spectra obtained from X-ray absorption fine structure or electron energy loss spectroscopies.

Abstract
The aim of this work was to determine and understand the origin of the electronic properties of Mn(IV) complexes, especially the zero-field splitting (ZFS), through a combined experimental and theoretical investigation on five well-characterized mononuclear octahedral Mn(IV) compounds, with various coordination spheres (N6, N3O3, N2O4 in both trans (trans-N2O4) and cis configurations (cis-N2O4) and O4S2). High-frequency and -field EPR (HFEPR) spectroscopy has been applied to determine the ZFS parameters of two of these compounds, MnL(trans-N2O4) and MnL(O4S2). While at X-band EPR, the axial-component of the ZFS tensor, D, was estimated to be +0.47 cm(-1) for MnL(O4S2), and a D-value of +2.289(5) cm(-1) was determined by HFEPR, which is the largest D-magnitude ever measured for a Mn(IV) complex. A moderate D value of -0.997(6) cm(-1) has been found for MnL(trans-N2O4). Quantum chemical calculations based on two theoretical frameworks (the Density Functional Theory based on a coupled perturbed approach (CP-DFT) and the hybrid Ligand-Field DFT (LF-DFT)) have been performed to define appropriate methodologies to calculate the ZFS tensor for Mn(IV) centers, to predict the orientation of the magnetic axes with respect to the molecular ones, and to define and quantify the physical origin of the different contributions to the ZFS. Except in the case of MnL(trans-N2O4), the experimental and calculated D values are in good agreement, and the sign of D is well predicted, LF-DFT being more satisfactory than CP-DFT. The calculations performed on MnL(cis-N2O4) are consistent with the orientation of the principal anisotropic axis determined by single-crystal EPR, validating the calculated ZFS tensor orientation. The different contributions to D were analyzed demonstrating that the d-d transitions mainly govern D in Mn(IV) ion. However, a deep analysis evidences that many factors enter into the game, explaining why no obvious magnetostructural correlations can be drawn in this series of Mn(IV) complexes.

Abstract
Ligand field density functional theory (LFDFT) is a methodology consisting of non-standard handling of DFT calculations and post-computation analysis, emulating the ligand field parameters in a non-empirical way. Recently, the procedure was extended for two-open-shell systems, with relevance for inter-shell transitions in lanthanides, of utmost importance in understanding the optical and magnetic properties of rare-earth materials. Here, we expand the model to the calculation of intensities of f → d transitions, enabling the simulation of spectral profiles. We focus on Eu(2+)-based systems: this lanthanide ion undergoes many dipole-allowed transitions from the initial 4f(7)((8)S7/2) state to the final 4f(6)5d(1) ones, considering the free ion and doped materials. The relativistic calculations showed a good agreement with experimental data for a gaseous Eu(2+) ion, producing reliable Slater-Condon and spin-orbit coupling parameters. The Eu(2+) ion-doped fluorite-type lattices, CaF2:Eu(2+) and SrCl2:Eu(2+), in sites with octahedral symmetry, are studied in detail. The related Slater-Condon and spin-orbit coupling parameters from the doped materials are compared to those for the free ion, revealing small changes for the 4f shell side and relatively important shifts for those associated with the 5d shell. The ligand field scheme, in Wybourne parameterization, shows a good agreement with the phenomenological interpretation of the experiment. The non-empirical computed parameters are used to calculate the energy and intensity of the 4f(7)-4f(6)5d(1) transitions, rendering a realistic convoluted spectrum.

Abstract
The most efficient way to provide domestic lighting nowadays is by light-emitting diodes (LEDs) technology combined with phosphors shifting the blue and UV emission toward a desirable sunlight spectrum. A route in the quest for warm-white light goes toward the discovery and tuning of the lanthanide-based phosphors, a difficult task, in experimental and technical respects. A proper theoretical approach, which is also complicated at the conceptual level and in computing efforts, is however a profitable complement, offering valuable structure-property rationale as a guideline in the search of the best materials. The Eu(2+)-based systems are the prototypes for ideal phosphors, exhibiting a wide range of visible light emission. Using the ligand field concepts in conjunction with density functional theory (DFT), conducted in nonroutine manner, we develop a nonempirical procedure to investigate the 4f(7)-4f(6)5d(1) luminescence of Eu(2+) in the environment of arbitrary ligands, applied here on the CsMgBr3:Eu(2+)-doped material. Providing a salient methodology for the extraction of the relevant ligand field and related parameters from DFT calculations and encompassing the bottleneck of handling large matrices in a model Hamiltonian based on the whole set of 33,462 states, we obtained an excellent match with the experimental spectrum, from first-principles, without any fit or adjustment. This proves that the ligand field density functional theory methodology can be used in the assessment of new materials and rational property design.

Abstract
Mononuclear Ni(II) complexes are particularly attractive in the area of single-molecule magnets as the axial zero-field splitting (D) for the Ni(II) complexes is in the range of -200 to +200 cm(-1) . Despite this advantage, very little is known on the origin of anisotropy across various coordination ligands, coordination numbers, and particularly what factors influence the D parameter in these complexes. To answer some of these questions, herein we have undertaken a detailed study of a series of mononuclear Ni(II) complexes with ab initio calculations. Our results demonstrate that three prominent spin-conserved low-lying d-d transitions contribute significantly to the D value. Variation in the sign and the magnitude of D values are found to correlate to the specific structural distortions. Apart from the metal-ligand bond lengths, two different parameters, namely, Δα and Δβ, which are correlated to the cis angles present in the coordination environment, are found to significantly influence the axial D values. Developed magneto-structural D correlations suggest that the D values can be enhanced significantly by fine tuning the structural distortion in the coordination environment. Calculations performed on a series of Ni(II) models with coordination numbers two to six unfold an interesting observation-the D parameter increases significantly upon a reduction in coordination number compared with a reference octahedral coordination. Besides, if high symmetry is maintained, even larger coordination numbers yield large D values.

Abstract
Density functional studies have been performed on a set of trinuclear single-molecule magnets (SMMs) of general formula [{Mn2(5-Br salen)2(MeOH)2}M(CN)6](NEt4) (M=Fe(III) (1), Ru(III) (2) and Os(III) (3); 5-Brsalen=N,N'-ethylenebis(5-bromosalicylidene)iminato anion). We have computed the orbital-dependent exchange interaction for all three complexes for the first time using DFT and complete active space self-consistent field (CASSCF) methods. DFT calculations yield the anisotropic exchange as J(ξξ)=3.5 cm(-1) for 1; J(ξξ)=12.1 cm(-1), J(ζζ)=-6.9 cm(-1) and J(ηη)=-14 cm(-1) for 2; and J(ξξ)=23.7 cm(-1) and J(ζζ) =-11.1 cm(-1) for 3. The computed values are in agreement with the experimental report, and this suggests that the established methodology can be used to compute the anisotropic exchange in larger clusters. Our calculations reiterate the fact that the exchange is described by a three-axis anisotropic exchange for complexes 2 and 3 as evidenced by the experiments. A stronger exchange coupling as we move down the periodic table from 3d to 5d is reproduced by our calculations, and the origin of this enhancement in the exchange interaction has been probed by using molecular orbital analysis. The electronic origin of different types of exchange observed in this series is found to be related to the energy difference between possible degenerate pairs and the nature of orbital interactions. By computing the exchange interaction, the single-ion anisotropy of Mn(III) and zero-field splitting of the S=9/2 ground state of complexes 1-3 using CASSCF and/or DFT methods, we have attempted to shed light on the issue of anisotropic exchange and the barrier height for the magnetisation reversal in SMMs. Comprehensive magneto-structural correlations have been developed to offer clues on how to further enhance the barrier height in this class of SMMs.

Abstract
A methodology for the rigorous nonperturbative derivation of magnetic pseudospin Hamiltonians of mononuclear complexes and fragments based on ab initio calculations of their electronic structure is described. It is supposed that the spin-orbit coupling and other relativistic effects are already taken fully into account at the stage of quantum chemistry calculations of complexes. The methodology is based on the establishment of the correspondence between the ab initio wave functions of the chosen manifold of multielectronic states and the pseudospin eigenfunctions, which allows to define the pseudospin Hamiltonians in the unique way. Working expressions are derived for the pseudospin Zeeman and zero-field splitting Hamiltonian corresponding to arbitrary pseudospins. The proposed calculation methodology, already implemented in the SINGLE_ANISO module of the MOLCAS-7.6 quantum chemistry package, is applied for a first-principles evaluation of pseudospin Hamiltonians of several complexes exhibiting weak, moderate, and very strong spin-orbit coupling effects.

Abstract
A theoretical, computational, and conceptual framework for the interpretation and prediction of the magnetic anisotropy of transition metal complexes with orbitally degenerate or orbitally nearly degenerate ground states is explored. The treatment is based on complete active space self-consistent field (CASSCF) wave functions in conjunction with N-electron valence perturbation theory (NEVPT2) and quasidegenerate perturbation theory (QDPT) for treatment of magnetic field- and spin-dependent relativistic effects. The methodology is applied to a series of Fe(II) complexes in ligand fields of almost trigonal pyramidal symmetry as provided by several variants of the tris-pyrrolylmethyl amine ligand (tpa). These systems have recently attracted much attention as mononuclear single-molecule magnet (SMM) complexes. This study aims to establish how the ligand field can be fine tuned in order to maximize the magnetic anisotropy barrier. In trigonal ligand fields high-spin Fe(II) complexes adopt an orbitally degenerate (5)E ground state with strong in-state spin-orbit coupling (SOC). We study the competing effects of SOC and the (5)E⊗ε multimode Jahn-Teller effect as a function of the peripheral substituents on the tpa ligand. These subtle distortions were found to have a significant effect on the magnetic anisotropy. Using a rigorous treatment of all spin multiplets arising from the triplet and quintet states in the d(6) configuration the parameters of the effective spin-Hamiltonian (SH) approach were predicted from first principles. Being based on a nonperturbative approach we investigate under which conditions the SH approach is valid and what terms need to be retained. It is demonstrated that already tiny geometric distortions observed in the crystal structures of four structurally and magnetically well-documented systems, reported recently, i.e., [Fe(tpa(R))](-) (R = tert-butyl, Tbu (1), mesityl, Mes (2), phenyl, Ph (3), and 2,6-difluorophenyl, Dfp (4), are enough to lead to five lowest and thermally accessible spin sublevels described sufficiently well by S = 2 SH provided that it is extended with one fourth order anisotropy term. Using this most elementary parametrization that is consistent with the actual physics, the reported magnetization data for the target systems were reinterpreted and found to be in good agreement with the ab initio results. The multiplet energies from the ab initio calculations have been fitted with remarkable consistency using a ligand field (angular overlap) model (ab initio ligand field, AILFT). This allows for determination of bonding parameters and quantitatively demonstrates the correlation between increasingly negative D values and changes in the σ-bond strength induced by the peripheral ligands. In fact, the sigma-bonding capacity (and hence the Lewis basicity) of the ligand decreases along the series 1 > 2 > 3 > 4.
