Abstract
We report the synthesis of a new nickel(II) hydroxide complex 2 supported by a rigid, tridentate triazolylidene-carbazolid ligand. The complex can be accessed in high yields following a simple and stepwise extraction protocol using dichloromethane and aqueous ammonium chloride followed by aqeous sodium hydroxide solution. We found that complex 2 is highly basic, undergoing various deprotonation/desilylation reactions with E-H and C-H acidic and silylated compounds. In this context we synthesized a variety of novel, functionalized nickel(II) complexes with trimethylsilylolate (3), trityl sulfide (4), tosyl amide (5), azido (6), pyridine (7), acetylide (8, 9), fluoroarene (10 & 11) and enolate (12) ligands. We furthermore found that 2 reacts with malonic acid dimethyl ester in a knoevennagel-type condensation reaction, giving access to a new enolate ligand in complex 13, consisting of two malonic acid units. Furthermore, complex 2 reacts with acetonitrile to form the cyanido complex 14. The formation of complexes 13 and 14 is particularly interesting, as they underline the potential of complex 2 in both C-C bond formation and cleavage reactions.

Abstract
The phenyltris[(tert-butylthio)methyl]borate ligand, [PhTttBu], has been studied extensively as a platform for coordination, organometallic, and bioinorganic chemistry, especially with 3d metals. While [PhTttBu]Co(3,5-DBCatH) (3,5-DBCatH is 3,5-di-tert-butylcatecholate), a CoII-monoanionic catecholate complex, was successfully isolated to model the active site of cobalt(II)-substituted homoprotocatechuate 2,3-dioxygenase (Co-HPCD) [Wang et al. (2019). Inorg. Chim. Acta, 488, 49-55], its iron(II) counterpart, [PhTttBu]Fe(3,5-DBCatH), was not accessible via similar synthetic routes. Switching the nucleophile from catecholate to alkoxide or aryloxide, however, led to the successful isolation of three highly air-sensitive FeII-alkoxide and -aryloxide complexes, namely, (triphenylmethoxo){tris[(tert-butylsulfanyl)methyl]phenylborato-κ3S,S',S''}iron(II), [Fe(C21H38BS3)(C19H15O)], (2), (2,6-dimethylphenolato){tris[(tert-butylsulfanyl)methyl]phenylborato-κ3S,S',S''}iron(II), [Fe(C21H38BS3)(C8H9O)], (3), and bis{μ-tris[(tert-butylsulfanyl)methyl]phenylborato-κ3S,S':S''}bis[(phenolato-κO)iron(II)] toluene disolvate, [Fe2(C21H38BS3)2(C6H5O)2]·2C7H8, (4). In the solid state, compounds (2) and (3) are monomeric, with [PhTttBu] acting as a tridentate ligand. In contrast, compound (4) crystallizes as a dimeric complex, wherein each [PhTttBu] ligand binds to an iron centre with two thioethers and binds to the other iron centre with the third thioether. The molecular structures of (2)-(4) demonstrate a diversity in the binding modes of [PhTttBu] and highlight its potential use for assembling multinuclear complexes. In addition, the successful isolation of (2)-(4), as well as the structural information of a [PhTttBu] modification product, namely, bis{μ-tris[(tert-butylsulfanyl)methyl](2-oxidophenolato)borato-κO,O',S,S':O'}dicobalt(II), [Co2(C21H37BO2S3)2], (5), obtained from the reaction of [PhTttBu]CoCl with potassium monoanionic catecholate, shed light on the origin of the instability of [PhTttBu]Fe(3,5-DBCatH).

Abstract
Two series of high-spin nickel complexes, [TpPh,Me]Ni(EAr) (E = O, Se, Te; Ar = C6H5) and [TpPh,Me]Ni(SeC6H4-4-X) (X = H, Cl, Me, OMe), were prepared by metathetical reaction of the nickel(II) halide precursor with sodium salts of the corresponding chalcogen, NaEAr. X-ray crystallographic characterization and spectroscopic studies have established the geometric and electronic structures of these complexes. The observed spectroscopic and structural characteristics reveal distinct trends in accordance with the variation of the identity of the arylchalcogenolate and para substituent. Reaction of the [TpPh,Me]Ni(EAr) complexes with methyl iodide proceeded readily, producing the corresponding methylarylchalcogen and [TpPh,Me]NiI. A kinetic and computational analysis of the reaction of [TpPh,Me]Ni(SeC6H5) with MeI supports that the electrophilic alkylation reactions occur via an associative mechanism via a classical SN2 transition state.

Abstract
The synthesis and characterization of a series of novel tungsten complexes employing the bioinspired, sulfur-rich scorpionate ligand [PhTt] (phenyltris((methylthio)methyl)borate) are reported. Starting from the previously published tungsten precursor [WBr2(CO)3(NCMe)2], a salt metathesis reaction with 1 equiv of Cs[PhTt] led to the desired complex [WBr(CO)3(PhTt)] (1), making it the first tungsten complex employing a poly(thioether)borate ligand. Surprisingly, the reaction of [WBr2(CO)3(NCMe)2] with an excess of the ligand gave complex [W(CO)2(η2-CH2SMe)(PhTt)] (2) with a bidentate (methylthio)methanide ligand as the major product. Thereby, phenyldi((methylthio)methyl)borane is formed, which was isolated and characterized by NMR spectroscopy. The bromido ligand in [WBr(CO)3(PhTt)] was further substituted by the S,N-bidentate methimazole in order to make the first coordination sphere more sulfur-rich forming [W(CO)2(mt)(PhTt)] (3). Alkyne tungsten complexes employing the sulfur-rich scorpionate ligand were accessible by reaction of [WBr2(CO)(C2R2)2(NCMe)] (R = Me, Ph) with Cs[PhTt] forming [WBr(CO)(C2R2)2(PhTt- S, S')] (R = Me 4, Ph 5), with the potentially tridentate ligand coordinated only via two sulfur atoms. In the case of 4, the higher flexibility of the bidentate coordination leads to the formation of two isomers with respect to the six-membered ring formed by the tungsten center and the two coordinated sulfur atoms of the ligand. All complexes 1-5 were characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis.

Abstract
The synthesis of four new FeII(N4S(thiolate)) complexes as models of the thiol dioxygenases are described. They are composed of derivatives of the neutral, tridentate ligand triazacyclononane (R3TACN; R = Me, iPr) and 2-aminobenzenethiolate (abtx; X = H, CF3), a non-native substrate for thiol dioxygenases. The coordination number of these complexes depends on the identity of the TACN derivative, giving 6-coordinate (6-coord) complexes for FeII(Me3TACN)(abtx)(OTf) (1: X = H; 2: X = CF3) and 5-coordinate (5-coord) complexes for [FeII(iPr3TACN)(abtx)](OTf) (3: X = H; 4: X = CF3). Complexes 1-4 were examined by UV-vis, 1H/19F NMR, and Mössbauer spectroscopies, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations were employed to support the data. Mössbauer spectroscopy reveals that the 6-coord 1-2 and 5-coord 3- 4 exhibit distinct spectra, and these data are compared with that for cysteine-bound CDO, helping to clarify the coordination environment of the cys-bound FeII active site. Reaction of 1 or 2 with O2 at -95 °C leads to S-oxygenation of the abt ligand, and in the case of 2, a rare di(sulfinato)-bridged complex, [Fe2III(μ-O)((2-NH2) p-CF3C6H3SO2)2](OTf)2 ( 5), was obtained. Parallel enzymatic studies on the CDO variant C93G were carried out with the abt substrate and show that reaction with O2 leads to disulfide formation, as opposed to S-oxygenation. The combined model and enzyme studies show that the thiol dioxygenases can operate via a 6-coord FeII center, in contrast to the accepted mechanism for nonheme iron dioxygenases, and that proper substrate chelation to Fe appears to be critical for S-oxygenation.

Abstract
The iron(II) semiquinonate character within the iron(III) catecholate species has been proposed by numerous studies to account for the O2 reactivity of intradiol catechol dioxygenases, but a well-characterized iron(II) semiquinonate species that exhibits intradiol cleaving reactivity has not yet been reported. In this study, a detailed electronic structure description of the first iron(II) o-semiquinonate complex, [PhTttBu]Fe(phenSQ) [PhTttBu = phenyltris(tert-butylthiomethyl)borate; phenSQ = 9,10-phenanthrenesemiquinonate; Wang et al. Chem. Commun. 2014, 50, 5871-5873], was generated through a combination of electronic and Mössbauer spectroscopies, SQUID magnetometry, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. [PhTttBu]Fe(phenSQ) reacts with O2 to generate an intradiol cleavage product, diphenic anhydride, in 16% yield. To assess the dependence of the intradiol reactivity on the identity of the metal ion, the nickel analogue, [PhTttBu]Ni(phenSQ), and its derivative, [PhTttBu]Ni(3,5-DBSQ) (3,5-DBSQ = 3,5-di-tert-butyl-1,2-semiquinonate), were prepared and characterized by X-ray crystallography, mass spectrometry, 1H NMR and electronic spectroscopies, and SQUID magnetometry. DFT calculations, evaluated on the basis of the experimental data, support the electronic structure descriptions of [PhTttBu]Ni(phenSQ) and [PhTttBu]Ni(3,5-DBSQ) as high-spin nickel(II) complexes with antiferromagnetically coupled semiquinonate ligands. Unlike its iron counterpart, [PhTttBu]Ni(phenSQ) decomposes slowly in an O2 atmosphere to generate 14% phenanthrenequinone with a negligible amount of diphenic anhydride. [PhTttBu]Ni(3,5-DBSQ) does not react with O2. This dramatic effect of the metal-ion identity supports the hypothesis that a metal(III) alkylperoxo species serves as an intermediate in the intradiol cleaving reactions. The redox properties of all three complexes were probed using cyclic voltammetry and differential pulse voltammetry, which indicate an inner-sphere electron-transfer mechanism for the formation of phenanthrenequinone. The lack of O2 reactivity of [PhTttBu]Ni(3,5-DBSQ) can be rationalized by the high redox potential of the metal-ligated 3,5-DBSQ/3,5-DBQ couple.

Abstract
A continuous shape measures analysis of the coordination polyhedra of a host of transition metal complexes with bi- and multidentate ligands discloses the distortion pathway associated with each particular topology of the chelate rings formed. The basic parameter that controls the degree of distortion is the metal-donor atom bond distance that induces nonideal bond angles due to the rigidity of the ligands. Thus, the degree of distortion within each family of complexes depends on the atomic size, on which the high- or low-spin state has a large effect. Special attention is therefore paid to several spin-crossover systems and to the enhanced distortions that go along with the transition from low- to high-spin state affected by temperature, light, or pressure. Several families of complexes show deviations from the expected distortion pathways in the high-spin state that can be associated to the onset of intermolecular interactions such as secondary coordination of counterions or solvent molecules. Also, significant displacement of counterions in an extended solid may result from the changes in metal-ligand bond distances when ligands are involved in intermolecular hydrogen bonding.

Abstract
A kinetic study is reported for reactions of pseudotetrahedral nickel(II) arylthiolate complexes [(Tp(R,Me))Ni-SAr] (Tp(R,Me) = hydrotris{3-R-5-methyl-1-pyrazolyl}borate, R = Me, Ph, and Ar = C6H5, C6H4-4-Cl, C6H4-4-Me, C6H4-4-OMe, 2,4,6-Me3C6H2, 2,4,6-(i)Pr3C6H2) with organic electrophiles R'X (i.e., MeI, EtI, BzBr) in low-polarity organic solvents (toluene, THF, chloroform, dichloromethane, or 1,2-dichloroethane), yielding a pseudotetrahedral halide complex [(Tp(R,Me))Ni-X] (X = Cl, Br, I) and the corresponding organosulfide R'SAr. Competitive reactions with halogenated solvents and adventitious air were also examined. Akin to reactions of analogous and biomimetic zinc complexes, a pertinent mechanistic question is the nature of the reactive nucleophile, either an intact thiolate complex or a free arylthiolate resulting from a dissociative pre-equilibrium. The observed kinetics conformed to a second-order rate law, first order with respect to the complex and electrophile, and no intermediate complexes were observed. In the absence of a mechanistically diagnostic rate law, a variety of mechanistic probes were examined, including kinetic effects of varying the metal, solvent, electrophile, and temperature, as well as the 3-pyrazolyl and arylthiolate substituents. Compared to zinc analogues, the effect of Ni-SAr covalency is also of interest herein. The results are broadly interpreted with respect to the disparate mechanistic pathways.

Abstract
Synthesis and characterization of several new pseudotetrahedral arylthiolate complexes [(Tp(Ph,Me))Ni-SAr] (Tp(Ph,Me) = hydrotris{3-phenyl-5-methyl-1-pyrazolyl}borate; Ar = Ph, 2,4,6-(i)Pr3C6H2, C6H4-4-Cl, C6H4-4-Me, C6H4-4-OMe) are reported, including X-ray crystal structures of the first two complexes. With prior results, two series of complexes are spanned, [(Tp(Ph,Me))Ni-S-2,4,6-RC6H2] (R'' = H, Me, (i)Pr) plus the xylyl analogue [(Tp(Ph,Me))Ni-S-2,6-Me2C6H3], as well as [(Tp(Ph,Me))Ni-S-C6H4-4-Y] (Y = Cl, H, Me, OMe), intended to elucidate steric and/or electronic effects on arylthiolate coordination. In contrast to [(Tp(Me,Me))Ni-SAr] analogues that adopt a sawhorse conformation, the ortho-disubstituted complexes show enhanced trigonal and Ni-S-Ar bending, reflecting the size of the 3-pyrazole substituents. Moreover, weakened scorpionate ligation is implied by spectroscopic data. Little spectroscopic effect is observed in the series of para-substituted complexes, suggesting the observed effects are primarily steric in origin. The relatively electron-rich and encumbered complex [(Tp(Ph,Me))Ni-S-2,4,6-(i)Pr3C6H2] behaves uniquely when dissolved in CH3CN, forming a square planar solvent adduct with a bidentate scorpionate ligand, [(κ(2)-Tp(Ph,Me))Ni(NCMe)(S-2,4,6-(i)Pr3C6H2)]. This adduct was isolated and characterized by X-ray crystallography. Single-point DFT and TD-DFT calculations on a simplified [(κ(2)-Tp)Ni(NCMe)(SPh)] model were used to clarify the electronic spectrum of the adduct, and to elucidate differences between Ni-SAr bonding and spectroscopy between pseudotetrahedral and square planar geometries.

Abstract
The nickel(II) complex [Ni(Tp(Me2)) (SC(6)H(4)NO(2))] [1a; Tp(Me2) = hydrotris(3,5-dimethylpyrazol-1-yl)borate] reacts with O(2) to form the ligand oxygenation product ArSO(2)(-) in MeCN, and also 1a catalyzes the oxygenation of external substrates such as triphenylphosphine. The reactivity may correlate to the unique quinoid-like resonance structure of the thiophenolate ligand. The structure is stabilized by a p-nitro group and induced by coordination of MeCN.

Abstract
This review traces the development and application of the tris(thioether)borate ligands, tripodal ligands with highly polarizable thioether donors. Areas of emphasis include the basic coordination chemistry of the mid-to-late first row transition metals (Fe, Ni, Co, Cu), and the role of the thioether substituent in directing complex formation, the modeling of zinc thiolate protein active sites, high-spin organo-iron and organo-cobalt chemistry, the preparation of monovalent complexes of Fe, Co and Ni, and dioxygen and sulfur activation by monovalent nickel complexes.

Abstract
The electronic structures of a series of high-spin Ni(II)-thiolate complexes of the form [PhTt(tBu)]Ni(SR) (R = CPh(3), 2; C(6)F(5), 3; C(6)H(5), 4; PhTt(tBu) = phenyltris((tert-butylthio)methyl)borate) have been characterized using a combined spectroscopic and computational approach. Resonance Raman (rR) spectroscopic data reveal that the nu(Ni-SR) vibrational feature occurs between 404 and 436 cm(-1) in these species. The corresponding rR excitation profiles display a striking de-enhancement behavior because of interference effects involving energetically proximate electronic excited states. These data were analyzed in the framework of time-dependent Heller theory to obtain quantitative insight into excited state nuclear distortions. The electronic absorption and magnetic circular dichroism spectra of 2-4 are characterized by numerous charge transfer (CT) transitions. The dominant absorption feature, which occurs at approximately 18,000 cm(-1) in all three complexes, is assigned as a thiolate-to-Ni CT transition involving molecular orbitals that are of pi-symmetry with respect to the Ni-S bond, reminiscent of the characteristic absorption feature of blue copper proteins. Density functional theory computational data provide molecular orbital descriptions for 2-4 and allow for detailed assignments of the key spectral features. A comparison of the results obtained in this study to those reported for similar Ni-thiolate species reveals that the supporting ligand plays a secondary role in determining the spectroscopic properties, as the electronic structure is primarily determined by the metal-thiolate bonding interaction.

Abstract
The steric protection offered by the macrobinucleating hexaazaditiophenolateligand (L) allows for the preparation of the first stable dinuclear nickel(II) borohydride bridged complex, which reacts rapidly with elemental sulphur producing a tetranuclear nickel(II) complex [{(L)Ni2}2(μ-S6)]2+ bearing a helical μ4-hexa- sulfide ligand. The [(L)CoII 2]2+ fragment have been able to trap a monomethyl orthomolybdate in the binding pocket. Unusual coordination modes of substrate in dinuclear macrocyclic compounds was demonstrated.

Abstract
The title compound, [Ag(NO3)(C20H30S2)]n, was synthesized by the reaction of silver nitrate and 1,4-bis(cyclohexylthiomethyl)benzene (bctmb) in acetonitrile. The coordination polymer exhibits a two-dimensional layer structure. The layers are wave-like and parallel to the crystallographic ac plane; AgI ions are linked by the bctmb ligands and nitrate anions along the crystallographic a and c directions, respectively. In addition, the crystal structure is stabilized by C—H⋯O hydrogen bonds.
