Abstract
Reactions of methyl-2-pyridyl ketone, pyCOMe, with FeCl3·6H2O in various solvents gave complexes [Fe4Cl6(OMe)2(L1)2]·0.7MeCN·0.4MeOH (1·0.7MeCN·0.4MeOH) and [Fe3Cl4(bicine)(L2)]·Me2CO·0.2H2O (2·Me2CO·0.2H2O). The ligands (L1)2- = pyCO(Me)CHCOpy (in 1) and (L2)2- = pyCO(Me)CH2CO(OMe)py (in 2) are formed in situ, through an aldol reaction-type mechanism between the carbanion pyC(O)CH2- (formed by the nucleophilic attack of the MeO- in pyCOMe) and pyCOMe which results in the formation of a new C-C bond. The intermediate compound undergoes attack in the -CH2- or -CO- group by a MeO- group, and the new ligands (L1)2- and (L2)2-, respectively, are formed. The molecular structure of 1 consists of three corner-sharing [Fe2O2] rhombic units in cis-arrangement. The two terminal FeIII ions display distorted square pyramidal geometry and the two central FeIII ions are distorted octahedral. The molecular structure of 2 consists of two corner-sharing [Fe2O2] rhombic units, with the two terminal FeIII ions in distorted square pyramidal geometry and the central FeIII in distorted octahedral. The differentiation in the coordination environment of the FeIII ions in 1-2 is reflected in the values of the Mössbauer hyperfine parameters. In agreement with theoretical calculations, the square pyramidal sites exhibit a smaller isomer shift value in comparison to the octahedral sites. Magnetic studies indicate antiferromagnetic interactions leading to an S = 0 ground state in 1 and to an S = 5/2 ground state in 2, consistent with Electron Paramagnetic Resonance spectroscopy. Mössbauer spectra of 2 indicate the onset of relaxation effects below 80 K. At 1.5 K the spectrum of 2 consists of magnetic sextets. The determined hyperfine magnetic fields are consistent with the exchange coupling scheme imposed by the crystal structure of 2. Theoretical calculations shed light on the differences in the electronic structure between the square pyramidal and the octahedral sites.

Abstract
The impetus to modeling of enzyme mimics comes from their potential to provide insight to the alternate mechanistic pathways of the native enzymes. The present study demonstrates the syntheses and characterization of two different cobalt(II) complexes, [Co(pdm)(Phen)Cl]Cl·H2O (1) and [Co(pmmH)2(SCN)2] (2) with the aminoalcohol ligands such as pyridine-2,6-dimethanol (pdmH2) or 2-pyridinemonomethanol (pmmH) and their assessment as catechol oxidase (CO) enzyme mimic. Single Crystal X-ray diffraction and powder X-ray diffraction data suggest the octahedral environment around the Co(II) ion and the complexes form extensive 1D or 2D propagating network as a result of non-covalent interactions (O···H and C-H···π). TD-DFT calculations were used to explain the spectral bands obtained during the UV-Vis absorption studies and it is ascertained that the transitions were mainly of the intra-ligand charge transfer (ILCT) type. The catecholase biomimetic catalytic activity of the synthesized complexes has been investigated in detail and the kinetics is also performed. The results obtained show that both the complexes catalyze the aerobic oxidation of catechol to the corresponding o-quinone. The Kcat value for 1 is 106.99 h‒1 and for 2 is 90.32 h‒1 in methanol. It may be mentioned here that 1 and 2 are effective catalysts, with the order of activity being 1 > 2. The order of enzymatic activity is well justified by CV and DFT studies.Communicated by Ramaswamy H. Sarma.

Further synthetic investigation of the general lanthanoid(iii) [Ln(iii)]/copper(ii)/pyridine-2,6-dimethanol/carboxylate reaction system: {CuLn} coordination clusters (Ln = Dy, Tb, Ho) and their yttrium(iii) analogue. Abstract
In addition to previously studied {CuGd6}, {CuGd4}, {CuLn7} and {CuLn8} coordination clusters (Ln = trivalent lanthanide) containing pdm2- or Hpdm- ligands (H2pdm = pyridine-2,6-dimethanol) and ancillary carboxylate groups (RCO2-), the present work reports the synthesis and study of three new members of a fifth family of such complexes. Compounds [Cu5Ln4O2(OMe)4(NO3)4(O2CCH2But)2(pdm)4(MeOH)2] (Ln = Dy, 1; Ln = Tb, 2; Ln = Ho, 3) were prepared from the reaction of Ln(NO3)3·xH2O (x = 5, 6), CuX2·yH2O (X = ClO4, Cl, NO3; y = 6, 2 and 3, respectively), H2pdm, ButCH2CO2H and Et3N (2 : 2.5 : 2 : 1 : 9) in MeCN/MeOH. Rather surprisingly, the copper(ii)/yttrium(iii) analogue has a slightly different composition, i.e. [Cu5Y4O2(OMe)4(NO3)2(O2CCH2But)4(pdm)4(MeOH)2] (4). The structures of 1·4MeCN·1.5MeOH and 4·2MeOH were solved by single-crystal X-ray crystallography. The five CuII and four DyIII centres in 1 are held together by two μ5-O2-, four μ-MeO-, two syn,synη1:η1:μ ButCH2CO2-, four η2:η1:η2:μ3 pdm2- (each of these groups chelates a CuII atom and simultaneously bridges two DyIII atoms through its two -CH2O- arms) and two μ-MeOH ligands. The four terminal nitrato groups each chelate (η1:η1) a DyIII centre. The five CuII atoms are co-planar (by symmetry) forming a bow-tie arrangement; the four outer CuII atoms form a rectangle with edges of 3.061(1) and 6.076(1) Å. The four DyIII centres also form a rectangle that lies above and below the plane of the CuII centres, with edges of 3.739(1) and 5.328(1) Å. The two strictly planar rectangles are almost perpendicular. Two trigonal bipyramidal μ5-O2- groups link the perpendicular Cu5 and Dy4 frameworks together. The molecule 4 has a very similar structure to that of 1, differences being the replacement of the two chelating nitrato groups of 1 by two chelating ButCH2CO2- ligands in 4 and the coordination polyhedra of the LnIII and YIII atoms (Snub diphenoids in 1 and biaugmented trigonal prisms in 4). Dc magnetic susceptibility data (χM) on analytically pure samples of 1-3, collected in the 300-2 K range, indicate that ferromagnetic exchange interactions dominate leading to large spin ground states. The χMT vs. T data for 4 suggest moderately strong antiferromagnetic CuIICuII exchange interactions. Studies of the dynamic magnetic properties of the {Cu5Ln4} clusters show that 1 behaves as a SMM at zero field and 2 is a very weak field-induced SMM, while 3 exhibits only weak tails in the χ''Mvs. T plots at various ac frequencies at zero dc field.

Abstract
Controlling spin Hamiltonian parameters such as magnetic exchange and magnetic anisotropy of polynuclear clusters is of great interest in the area of single molecule magnets (SMMs). Among large polynuclear clusters, hexanuclear clusters offer the best compromise in terms of size as they are often rigid, solution stable, and chemically amenable. The {M6O2} core is one of the common architectures known for many hexanuclear clusters and generally reported to possess a diamagnetic ST = 0 spin ground state, barring a few exceptions. In these clusters, there are several open questions that are poorly understood: (a) What controls the nature of magnetic exchange, which in turn dictates the ground state spin values? (b) For clusters possessing a nonzero spin ground state, what dictates the magnetic anisotropy? Here, using density functional methods, we have attempted to shed light on these two question by evaluating the exchange coupling constants in [Fe6IIIO2(OH)2{(C4N2H2SMe)2C(OH)O}2( tBuCO2)10] (1), [Fe6III(O)2(O2CH2)(O2CCH2 tBu)12(py)2] (2), [Fe6III(O2)(O)2(O2CCMe3)12(py)2] (3), [FeIII6O3(O2CMe)9(OEt)2(bpy)2]ClO4 (4), [MnIII6O2(O2CH2)(O2CPe t)11(HO2CPe t)2(O2CMe)] (5), and [NiII6(OH)4(O2C tBu)8( tBuCO2H)4] (6) complexes. We have estimated all the eight near-neighbor exchange coupling constants in these clusters. Our calculations not only agree with the experimental results but also offer insight on the origin of the spin ground state. Extensive magneto-structural correlations developed by varying M-O-M angles and M-O distances reveal that J values are extremely sensitive to small structural distortions. Correlations developed indicate that both the parameters are important for Fe(III), but for Mn(III) and Ni(II), the angles were found to play a dominant role. Quite interestingly, the computed zero-field splitting parameter D S=5 of complex 1 reveals that the exchange contribution to the anisotropy controls the sign of the ground state D value-an observation which differs from the general perception that the ground state D is controlled by the single-ion zero-field splitting parameter.

Abstract
The initial use of ligands 2'-hydroxyacetophenone (HL1), 2-hydroxybenzophenone (HL2) and 2,2'-dihydroxybenzophenone (H2L3) in iron(iii) chemistry is described. The syntheses and crystal structures are reported for five iron(iii) clusters: [Fe10O4(OMe)14(L1)6(MeOH)2](NO3)2·3MeOH (1·3MeOH), [Fe12O4(OH)(OMe)17(L1)8](ClO4)2·2H2O (2·2H2O), [Fe10O4(OMe)14Cl4(L2)4(MeOH)2] (3), [Fe10O4(OMe)14(L2)6(py)2](ClO4)2·MeOH (4·MeOH), where py = pyridine, and [Fe6O2(OEt)6(O2CMe)2(L3)2(HL3)2] (5). The molecular structures of the decanuclear clusters 1, 3 and 4 are organized around a {Fe10(μ4-O)4(μ3-OMe)2(μ-OMe)12}8+ core consisting of ten {Fe3O4} face-sharing defective cubane units. The core of 2 consists of a {Fe12(μ4-O)4(μ3-OMe)4(μ-OH)(μ-OMe)13}10+ unit composed of twelve {Fe3O4} face-sharing defective cubanes. The ligands (L1)- and (L2)- in 1-4 adopt the O,O'-bidentate chelating coordination mode and their roles are to terminate the further aggregation of the FeIII/O2-/RO- cores. Complex 5 contains the {Fe6(μ4-O)2(μ-OEt)6(μ-Ocarbonyl)2}4+ core, where the μ-Ocarbonyl atoms are the bridging carbonyl oxygens of the two η1:η2:η1:μ (L3)2- ligands; the (HL3)- groups behave as Ophenolate, Ocarbonyl-bidentate chelating ligands with the neutral hydroxyl group being unbound to the FeIII atoms. The core is composed of four {Fe3O4} face-sharing defective cubanes. The FeIII atoms in 1-5 are all six-coordinate with distorted octahedral geometries. The IR spectra of the complexes are discussed in terms of the known coordination modes of the ligands and the ionic character of nitrates and perchlorates. Variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility and variable-field magnetization measurements establish that 2, 3 and 5 have S = 3, 0 and 5 ground states, respectively. The susceptibility data for 5 were fitted using a 3-J model indicating the simultaneous presence of both antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic FeIIIFeIII exchange interactions. Known magnetostructural correlations in oxido-bridged iron(iii) systems have been applied to rationalise the magnetic behaviour of the three clusters. The results of the present study demonstrate the utility of HL1, HL2 and H2L3 in the stabilisation of robust iron(iii)/oxido/alkoxido clusters.

Abstract
The reaction of one equivalent of 2-methyl-1-(pyridin-2-yl)propan-2-ol (HL) with two equivalents of [Ni(OAc)2·4H2O] in methanol afforded the nonanuclear coordination cluster [Ni9(HL-κ(2)N,O)4(OAc-κ(2)O)2(μ2-OAc-κ(1)O)2(μ2-OAc-κ(2)O,O')4(μ3-OAc-κ(2)O;κ(2)O,O')2(μ3-OMe)8] (1). All nickel ions are hexacoordinated and show a slightly distorted octahedral coordination geometry. This unusual centrosymmetric coordination cluster can be described as constituted by two cubane moieties connected by a linker comprising a nickel atom, situated on the inversion centre, four bridging acetates and two triply-bridging acetates. Each cubane contains four Ni(II) centres and four triply-bridging methoxide anions, two of the Ni(II) centres are N,O-chelated by the ligand HL, another Ni(II) is chelated by an acetate ligand and the fourth Ni(II) centre is connected to the exo-cubane Ni(II) through three acetate ligands which each have a different bonding mode: μ2-κ(2)O,O', μ2-κ(1)O, and μ3-κ(1)O;κ(2)O,O'. The magnetic and catalytic properties for ethylene oligomerization of the unusual complex have been investigated.

Abstract
The employment of pyridine-2-carbaldehyde oxime (paoH) in zinc(II) benzoate chemistry, in the absence or presence of azide ions, is described. The syntheses, crystal structures and spectroscopic characterization are reported for the complexes [Zn(O(2)CPh)(2)(paoH)(2)] (1), [Zn(12)(OH)(4)(O(2)CPh)(16)(pao)(4)] (2) and [Zn(4)(OH)(2)(pao)(4)(N(3))(2)] (3). The Zn(II) centre in octahedral 1 is coordinated by two monodentate PhCO(2)(-) groups and two N,N'-chelating paoH ligands. The metallic skeleton of 2 describes a tetrahedron encapsulated in a distorted cube. The {Zn(12)(μ-OH)(4)(μ(3)-ΟR)(4)}(16+) core of the cluster can be conveniently described as consisting of a central {Zn(4)(μ(3)-ΟR)(4)}(4+) cubane subunit (RO(-) = pao(-)) linked to four {Zn(2)(μ-OH)}(3+) subunits via the OH(-) group of each of the latter, which becomes μ(3). The molecule of 3 has an inverse 12-metallacrown-4 topology. Two triply bridging hydroxido groups are accommodated into the metallacrown ring. Each pao(-) ligand adopts the η(1) : η(1) : η(1) : μ coordination mode, chelating one Zn(II) atom and bridging a Zn(II)(2) pair. Complexes 1 and 2 display photoluminescence with maxima at ∼355 nm and ∼375 nm, upon maximum excitation at 314 nm; the origin of the photoluminescence is discussed.

Abstract
The use of pyridine-2,6-dimethanol, pdmH2, in reactions with nickel(ii) acetate has led to two Ni4 clusters, depending on the solvent. [Ni4(O2CMe)4(pdmH)4]·MeCN (1·MeCN) can be obtained from MeCN and [Ni4(O2CMe)6(pdmH)2(EtOH)2]·1.2EtOH (2·1.2EtOH) from EtOH. Each cluster can be converted into the other in the appropriate solvent. The tetranuclear cluster molecule 1 possesses a distorted cubane {Ni4(μ3-OR)4}4+ core (RO– = pdmH–) with the NiII atoms and the alkoxide-type oxygen atoms from the η3 : η1 : μ3 pdmH– ligands occupying alternate vertices of the cube; four η1 : η1 : μ MeCO2– groups cap four faces of the cube. The four NiII atoms in molecule 2 are located at four vertices of a defective dicubane and are bridged by six oxygen atoms, two μ3 from the η3 : η1 : η1 : μ3 pdmH– ligands and four from four monoatomically bridging MeCO2– groups; peripheral ligation is provided by two η1 : η1 : μ MeCO2– groups and two terminal EtOH ligands. IR data are discussed in terms of the coordination modes of the ligands. Variable-temperature direct-current magnetic susceptibility data of 1 and 2 were modelled with two and three J values respectively, indicating diamagnetic ground states (S = 0). The sign and the magnitude of the J values are discussed in terms of structural features of the complexes.

Abstract
The combined use of the anion of phenyl(2-pyridyl)ketone oxime (ppko(-)) and azides (N(3)(-)) in nickel(II) carboxylate chemistry has afforded two new Ni(II)(5) clusters, [Ni(5)(O(2)CR')(2)(N(3))(4)(ppko)(4)(MeOH)(4)] [R' = H (1), Me (2)]. The structurally unprecedented {Ni(5)(μ-N(3))(2)(μ(3)-N(3))(2)}(6+) cores of the two clusters are almost identical and contain the five Ni(II) atoms in a bowtie topology. Two N(3)(-) ions are end-on doubly bridging and the other two ions end-on triply bridging. The end-on μ(3)-N(3)(-) groups link the central Ni(II) atoms with the two peripheral metal ions on either side of the molecule, while the Ni···Ni bases of the triangles are each bridged by one end-on μ-N(3)(-) group. Variable-temperature, solid-state direct- (dc) and alternating-current (ac) magnetic susceptibility, and magnetization studies at 2.0 K were carried out on both complexes. The data indicate an overall ferromagnetic behavior and an S = 5 ground state for both compounds. The ac susceptibility studies on 1 reveal nonzero, frequency-dependent out-of-phase (χ(M)") signals at temperatures below ~3.5 K; complex 2 reveals no χ(M)" signals. However, single-crystal magnetization versus dc field scans at variable temperatures and variable sweep rates down to 0.04 K on 1 reveal no noticeable hysteresis loops, except very minor ones at 0.04 K assignable to weak intermolecular interactions propagated by nonclassical hydrogen bonds.

Abstract
The aerobic reaction of the Schiff-base ligand N-(benzimidazol-2-yl)salicylaldimine (Hbisi) with iron(II) perchlorate in methanol leads to the formation of the remarkable coordination compound [Fe(4)(mu(4)-O)(mu-MeO)(4)(bisi)(4)](ClO(4))(2) x 4 MeOH (1), whose single-crystal X-ray structure reveals the presence of a discrete Fe(III)(4)(mu(4)-O) core. Magnetic and Mossbauer studies both show that the exchange interaction within the square tetranuclear iron(III) unit is dominated by the central bridging mu(4)-oxido ligand, the involvement of the mu-methoxido bridges being negligible.
