Abstract
Metal complexes of Ni(II), Co(II), Cd(II), VO(IV) and UO(2)(VI) as well as several Cu(II) salts, including Cl(-),NO(3)(-),AcO(-),ClO(4)(-) and SO(4)(-2) with a tridentate O(2)N donor Schiff base ligand (H(2)L), synthesized by condensation of 5-acetyl-4-hydroxy-2H-1,3-thiazine-2,6(3H)-dione with 2-aminophenol, were prepared and characterized on the basis of elemental analyses, spectral, magnetic, molar conductance and thermal gravimetric analysis. Square planar, tetrahedral and octahedral geometries have been assigned to the prepared complexes. Molecular parameters of the ligand and its metal complexes have been calculated and correlated with the experimental data, and the changes of bond lengths are linearly correlated with IR data. The antimicrobial activities of the synthesized compounds were tested in vitro against the sensitive organisms Staphylococcus aureus as Gram positive bacteria, Proteus vulgaris as Gram negative bacteria and Candida albicans as fungus strain, and the results are discussed.

Abstract
The reaction of a tridentate Schiff base ligand HL (2-[(3-dimethylaminopropylimino)-methyl]-phenol) with Ni(II) acetate or perchlorate salts in the presence of azide as coligand has led to two new Ni(II) complexes of formulas [Ni(3)L(2)(OAc)(2)(μ(1,1)-N(3))(2)(H(2)O)(2)]·2H(2)O (1) and [Ni(2)L(2)(μ(1,1)-N(3))(μ(1,3)-N(3))](n)(2). Single crystal X-ray structures show that complex 1 is a linear trinuclear Ni(II) compound containing a μ(2)-phenoxido, an end-on (EO) azido and a syn-syn acetato bridge between the terminal and the central Ni(II) ions. Complex 2 can be viewed as a one-dimensional (1D) chain in which the triply bridged (di-μ(2)-phenoxido and EO azido) dimeric Ni(2) units are linked to each other in a zigzag pattern by a single end-to-end (EE) azido bridge. Variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility studies indicate the presence of moderate ferromagnetic exchange coupling in complex 1 with J value of 16.51(6) cm(-1). The magnetic behavior of 2 can be fitted in an alternating ferro- and antiferromagnetic model [J(FM) = +34.2(2.8) cm(-1) and J(AF) = -21.6(1.1) cm(-1)] corresponding to the triple bridged dinuclear core and EE azido bridge respectively. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were performed to corroborate the magnetic results of 1 and 2. The contributions of the different bridges toward magnetic interactions in both compounds have also been calculated.

Abstract
The reaction of 2,8-dimethyl-5,11-bis(pyridin-2-ylmethyl)-1,4,5,6,7,10,11,12-octahydroimidazo[4,5-h]imidazo[4,5-c][1,6]-diazecine (dimp) with copper(II) nitrate in water produces the compound [Cu(2)(dimp)(H(2)O)(2)(NO(3))(2)](NO(3))(2). The single-crystal X-ray structure shows the formation of hydrogen-bonded chains in the lattice that are formed by dicopper(II) units doubly connected by nitrate/water bridges. Within the one-dimensional chains, the Cu ions are separated by either intramolecular or intermolecular distances of 7.309(2) Å or 6.255(2) Å, respectively. The magnetic susceptibility data revealing weak antiferromagnetic exchange interactions between the copper(II) ions were interpreted by considering two possible models, namely, an isolated dinuclear and a 1-D chain picture. The latter leads to an alternation J(1) = -11.6 and J(2) = -3.0 cm(-1) along the chain. In order to clarify the relative strengths of the exchange couplings through hydrogen bonds and via the bridging dimp ligand, solution EPR studies and quantum chemical calculations were carried out. EPR studies unambiguously conclude on the existence of an exchange interaction J(a) mediated by the dinucleating dimp ligand, while the through-H coupling J(b) is physically absent in solution. On the basis of dinuclear units extracted from the X-ray data, J(a) was estimated around -5.0 cm(-1) from DFT-based calculations (M06 functional), whereas J(b) is negligible. In contrast, wave function configuration interaction calculations (DDCI) support a description where both inter- and intramolecular pathways coexist with a preeminent role of H bonds with J(a) = -2.8 and J(b) = -10.4 cm(-1). Not only are these values very consistent with the extracted set of parameters (J(1), J(2) = -11.6, -3.0 cm(-1)) but the possibility to generate leading exchange coupling through weak bonds is evidenced by means of wave function-based calculations.

Abstract
The syntheses, structures and magnetic properties are reported for three new manganese complexes containing the Schiff-base ((2-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl)methylene)isonicotinohydrazine (H(2)hmi) ligand. Complex [Mn(II)(H(2)hmi)(2)(MeOH)(2)Cl(2)] (1) was obtained from the reaction of H(2)hmi with MnCl(2) in a MeOH-MeCN mixture. Addition of triethylamine to the previous reaction mixture followed by diethyl ether diffusion yielded a dinuclear manganese [Mn(III)(2)(hmi)(2)(OMe)(2)](infinity).2MeCN.2OEt(2) (2) compound. Upon increasing the MnCl(2)/H(2)hmi ratio, the mixed valence complex [Mn(III)(2)Mn(II)(hmi)(2)(OMe)(2)Cl(2)](infinity).MeOH (3) was obtained. Dc and ac magnetic measurements were carried out on all three samples. The ac susceptibility and field dependence of the magnetisation measurements confirmed that complex 3 exhibits a single-molecule magnet behaviour with an effective energy barrier of 8.1 K and an Arrhenius pre-exponential factor of 3 x 10(-9) s.

Abstract
This paper describes the use of solvothermally moderated metal azide decomposition as a route to nanocrystalline mid to late transition metal nitrides. This method utilizes exothermic solid-state metathesis reaction precursor pairs, namely, metal halides (NiBr(2), FeCl(3), MnCl(2)) and sodium azide, but conducts the metathesis reaction and azide decomposition in superheated toluene. The reaction temperatures are relatively low (<300 degrees C) and yield thermally metastable nanocrystalline hexagonal Ni(3)N and Fe(2)N, and tetragonal MnN. These solvothermally moderated metal nitride metathesis reactions require several days to produce high yields of the intended nitrides. The products are aggregated nanoparticulates with room temperature magnetic properties consistent with their known bulk structures, for example, Fe(2)N and Ni(3)N are known ferromagnets. The stirred reactions with dispersed fine reagent powders benefit from solvothermal moderation more effectively than submerged pressed reagent pellets. Pellet reactions produced manganese nitrides with lower nitrogen content and higher aggregation than loose powder reactions, consistent with the occurrence of significant local exothermic heating in the pellet metathesis reactions.

Abstract
The syntheses of three original trifluoromethylated enaminones L1H-L3H, an unexplored type of ligand with possible multiple coordination centres, their redox properties and explorative coordination chemistry with copper(II) are presented. The ability of these ligands to coordinate copper(II) and then to form new mono- and dinuclear complexes is presented and discussed. The consequences of this metal coordination on redox properties are also explored.
