Synthesis and Optoelectronic Properties of a Novel Pt(IV)(C∧N∧C)(Cl)2(DMSO) Complex Cyclometalated by Tridentate Diphenylpyridine

A novel tridentate-cyclometalating Pt(IV) complex, namely, Pt(IV)(C∧N∧C)(Cl)2(DMSO), is initially synthesized through a series of reactions using Pt(II) complexes. The optoelectronic properties of Pt(IV)(C∧N∧C)(Cl)2(DMSO) are fully studied by adequate characterizations.

Density Functional Calculation and Evaluation of the Spectroscopic Properties and Luminescent Material Application Potential of the N-Heterocyclic Platinum(II) Tetracarbene Complexes

A series of reported Pt(II) carbene complexes possibly have the ability to serve as the new generation of blue emitters in luminescent devices because of their narrow emission spectra, high photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs), and rigid molecular skeleton. However, the combination of all carbene ligands with different multidentate structures will affect the overall planarity and horizontal dipole ratio to varying degrees, but the specific extent of this effect has not previously been analyzed in detail. In this work, density functional computation is used to study a class of platinum tetracarbene bidentate complexes with similar absorption and emission band characteristics, which is the main reason for the remarkable difference in quantum efficiency due to subtle differences in electronic states caused by different ligands. From the calculation results, the major reason, which results in significantly decrease in quantum efficiency for [Pt(cyim)2]2+, is that [Pt(cyim)2]2+ can reach the non-radiative deactivation metal-centered d-d excited state through an easier pathway compared with [Pt(meim)2]2+. The result, based on changes in the dihedral angle between ligands, can achieve the goal of improving and designing materials by adjusting the degree of the dihedral angle. (meim: bis(1,1'-dimethyl-3,3'-methylene-diimidazoline-2,2'-diylidene); cyim: bis(1,1'-dicyclohexyl-3,3'-methylene-diimidazoline-2,2'-diylidene).

Luminescent iridium(III) porphyrin complexes as near-infrared-emissive biological probes

We report herein the design, synthesis and characterisation of a series of luminescent iridium(III) porphyrin complexes [Ir(ttp)(CH2CH2OH)] (H2ttp = 5,10,15,20-tetra-4-tolylporphyrin) (1), [Ir(tpp-Ph-NO2)(CO)Cl] (H2tpp-Ph-NO2 = 5-(4-((4-nitrophenoxy)carbonyloxymethyl)phenyl)-10,15,20-triphenylporphyrin) (2), [Ir(tpp-COOMe)(Py)2](Cl) (H2tpp-COOMe = 5-(4-methoxycarbonylphenyl)-10,15,20-triphenylporphyrin; Py = pyridine) (3) and [Ir(tpp-COOH)(Py)2](Cl) (H2tpp-COOH = 5-(4-carboxylphenyl)-10,15,20-triphenylporphyrin) (4). All the complexes displayed long-lived near-infrared (NIR) emission attributed to an excited state of mixed triplet intraligand (3IL) (π → π*) (porphyrin) and triplet metal-to-ligand charge transfer (3MLCT) (dπ(Ir) → π*(porphyrin)) character. The cytotoxicity of the complexes toward HeLa cells was examined by the 3-(4,5-dimethyl-2-thiazolyl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay. The cationic complexes 3 and 4 exhibited higher cytotoxic activity toward HeLa cells than their neutral counterparts 1 and 2. Cellular uptake studies by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and laser-scanning confocal microscopy (LSCM) indicated that complexes 3 and 4 showed higher cellular uptake efficiencies than complexes 1 and 2 due to their cationic charge, and they were enriched in the perinuclear region of the cells with negligible nuclear uptake. Additionally, the carboxyl complex 4 was used to label a model protein bovine serum albumin (BSA) via an amidation reaction. The resultant luminescent protein conjugate 4-BSA displayed similar photophysical properties and intracellular localisation behaviour to its parent complex. The results of this work will contribute to the development of luminescent iridium(III) porphyrin complexes and related bioconjugates as NIR-emissive probes for bioimaging applications.

Influence of picolinate ancillary ligands on unique photophysical properties of Ir(ppz)2(LX)

Homoleptic fac-Ir(ppz)₃ (ppz = phenylpyrazole) and a series of heteroleptic Ir(ppz)₂(LX) complexes consisting of picolinic acid (pic), 3-hydroxypicolinic acid (picOH), and isoquinolinecarboxylic acid (iq) as ancillary ligands (LX) were synthesised to investigate the influence of the ancillary ligands on the photophysical properties of the complexes. Generally, the role of the ancillary ligand is considered insignificant compared to that of the main ligand. Ir(ppz)₃ showed deep-blue emission with a vibronic structure at 77 K, whereas Ir(ppz)₂(LX) showed a broad and red-shifted emission. Theoretical calculations of the molecular orbitals and energy levels were performed using density functional theory to understand the effect of the ancillary ligands on the emission changes. The ³MLCT_ppz state was calculated to be higher than the ³MLCT_LX state. Therefore, interligand energy transfer (ILET) between the main and ancillary ligands can occur exothermically in the triplet state. The dynamics of the ILET process were monitored directly using a femtosecond time-resolved transient absorption (TA) spectroscopic technique. The ³MLCT_ppz state was generated upon excitation at 290 nm, and the intensity of the TA band related to the ³MLCT_ppz state decreased as the time delay increased. Concurrently, the TA band related to the ³MLCT_LX state intensified. On the other hand, no further changes in the TA spectra were observed upon direct excitation of the ³MLCT_LX state at 420 nm. In contrast with other Ir(ppz)₂(LX) complexes, Ir(ppz)₂(picOH) produced long-lived TA species, attributed to excited-state intramolecular proton transfer of the picOH ligand in the excited singlet state.

Fine Emission Tuning from Near-Ultraviolet to Saturated Blue with Rationally Designed Carbene-Based [3 + 2 + 1] Iridium(III) Complexes

We designed and synthesized a new class of six phosphorescent [3 + 2 + 1] iridium(III) complexes [(pbib)Ir(C^C)CN] bearing a tridentate 1,3-bis(1-butylimidazolin-2-ylidene) phenyl N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC)-based pincer ligand (pbib), bidentate imidazole-based NHC ligands (C^C), and a monodentate cyano group and investigated their photophysical, electrochemical, and thermal stabilities and electroluminescent properties. The extended π-conjugation of the imidazole-based C^C ligand is found to be the key to fine-tune the emission energies from ultraviolet blue (λ = 378 nm) to saturated blue (λ = 482 nm), as shown by electrochemical and photophysical studies, which is also revealed by the density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT calculations. Vacuum-deposited organic light-emitting diode devices have been fabricated with these newly synthesized emitters and exhibited the best external quantum efficiency of 6.4% and Commission International de L'Éclairage (CIE) coordinates of (0.163, 0.096), where the CIE y is very similar to the National Television System Committee standard blue CIE (x, y) coordinates of (0.149, 0.085). These results indicate that the novel [3 + 2 + 1] coordinated iridium(III) complexes [(pbib)Ir(C^C)CN], having a saturated blue emission, not only could alleviate the photodegradation of the emitters when compared to [(pbib)Ir(pmi)CN] but also provide new design strategies of saturated-blue-emitting iridium(III) complexes.

On bio-MOF materials doped with phosphorescent iridium complexes for molecular oxygen determination: Synthesis, characterization and performance

In this paper, two phosphorescent Ir(III) complexes, Ir(ppy)₂(Ln), were synthesized using 2-phenyl pyridine (ppy) as the first (major) ligand and two phosphorous compounds (L1 and L2) as the auxiliary ligand. Their single crystal structure and electronic structure were discussed. Ir(ppy)₂(Ln) complexes were doped into a supporting matrix of bio-MOF-1 via cationic exchange to ensure their uniform distribution. Their successful doping was confirmed by SEM, fluorescence microscopy image, XRD, N₂ adsorption/desorption and ICP measurement. Their photophysical parameters, including absorption spectra, excitation spectra, emission spectra, emission lifetime and quantum yield, were discussed in detail. Their phosphorescent emission was confirmed by density functional theory and emission lifetime, making them applicable for oxygen sensing. Linear working curves were observed for both composite samples, showing sensitivity as high as 23.65 with response/recovery time of 9/22 s. Humidity effect on sensing performance was limited. These parameters were found superior to literature ones based on phosphorescent Cu(I), RE(III), Ru(II) and Re(I) complexes. The sensing mechanism was revealed as a dynamic collision between Ir(ppy)₂(Ln) and O₂ molecules. The novelty of this work was the combination of phosphorescent Ir(III) complexes with porous bio-MOF-1, resulting in greatly improved sensitivity and linear sensing with short response time.

Two Luminescent Iridium Complexes with Phosphorous Ligands and Their Photophysical Comparison in Solution, Solid and Electrospun Fibers: Decreased Aggregation-Caused Emission Quenching by Steric Hindrance

In this paper, we prepared two phosphorescent Ir complexes with ligands of 2-phenyl pyridine (ppy), and two phosphorous ligands with large steric hindrance, hoping to allow enough time for the transformation of the highly phosphorescent ³MLLCT (metal-to-ligand-ligand-charge-transfer) excited state. Their large steric hindrance minimized the π-π interaction between complex molecules, so that the aggregation-induced phosphorescence emission (AIPE) influence could be minimized. Their single crystals indicated that they took a distorted octahedral coordination mode. Photophysical comparison between these Ir complexes in solution, in the solid state and in electrospun fibers was performed to confirm the realization of limited aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ). The potential surface crossing and energy transfer from ³ML_BPECT/³ML_BPEL_ppyCT to ³ML_ppyCT in these Ir complexes were revealed by density functional theory calculation and temperature-dependent emission. It was confirmed that these two phosphorous ligands offered large steric hindrance, which decreased the ACQ effect, allowing the efficient emissive decay of the ³ML_ppyCT excited state. This is one of the several luminescent Ir complexes with a high emission yield (Φ = 0.27) and long emission lifetime (0.43 μs) in the solid state.

Phosphorescent [3 + 2 + 1] coordinated Ir(iii) cyano complexes for achieving efficient phosphors and their application in OLED devices

A series of neutral [3 + 2 + 1] coordinated iridium complexes bearing tridentate bis-NHC carbene chelates (2,6-bisimidazolylidene benzene), bidentate chelates (C^N ligands, e.g. derivatives of 2-phenylpridine), and monodentate ions (halides and pseudo-halides, such as Br, I, OCN and CN ions) have been systematically designed and synthesized. X-ray single crystal structure characterization revealed that the nitrogen atom in C^N ligands is located trans to the carbon atom in the benzene ring in tridentate chelates, while the coordinating carbon atom in C^N ligands is located trans to the monodentate ligands. Photophysical studies reveal that the C^N ligands play a vital role in tuning the UV absorption and emission properties, while the tridentate bis-NHC carbene chelates influence the lowest absorption band and emission energy when compared to heteroleptic Ir(ppy)2(acac) [i.e. molar absorptivities at ∼450 nm for ppy-OCN and Ir(ppy)2(acac) are 350 M-1 cm-1 and 1520 M-1 cm-1 and emission maximum peaks are at 465 nm and 515 nm respectively]. Among monodentate ligands that the complexes bear, the group containing the cyanide ligand displays higher emission energy, higher photophysical quantum yields, longer triplet lifetimes and better electrochemical and thermal stabilities than those of cyanate and bromide. Particularly, a blue organic light-emitting diode (OLED) based on dfppy-CN exhibited a maximum external quantum efficiency of 22.94% with CIE coordinates of (0.14, 0.24). Furthermore, a small efficiency roll-off of 5.7% was observed for this device at 1000 cd m-2.

Peripheral Ligand Effect on the Photophysical Property of Octahedral Iridium Complex: o-Aryl Substitution on the Phenyl Units of Homoleptic IrIII(C∧C)3 Complexes (C∧C = 1-Phenyl-3-methylimidazolin-2-ylidene-C,C2') for Deep Blue Phosphorescence

To evaluate the efficacy of ortho-arylation in the second coordination sphere of octahedral iridium complex, a series of homoleptic N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC)-based Ir(C^∧C^R)₃-type complexes were designed and prepared by introducing various substituents (R = H, Me, Ph, MePh, and diMePh) at the ortho-position of the aryl unit of the orthometalated phenyl group. In solution, an unnoticeable increase of emission quantum yields was observed within the variation of the ortho-substituent of the sterically demanding side-branch, a diMePh- group, showing the radiative quantum yield of mer-Ir(C^∧C^diMePh)₃ (Φ_PL = 1.9%), being higher than that of the unsubstituted carbene-based mer-Ir(C^∧C^H)₃ (Φ_PL = 1.2%), due to a considerable difference in the nonradiative decay rate (k_nr = 65.40 × 10⁵ s^-1 for mer-Ir(C^∧C^diMePh)₃ vs k_nr = 141.1 × 10⁵ s^-1 for mer-Ir(C^∧C^H)₃). Such a difference is attributed to the reduction of nonradiative pathway via the ³MLCT → ³MC transition by the widening gap between triplet emissive states and ³MC state, and a rigidity increase in structure by steric hindrance of bulky aryl substituent. In contrast, significant increase of emission quantum yield was observed in the films cast by spin coating, and fac-/mer-Ir(C^∧C^diMePh)₃ (Φ_PL = 60.1/49.1%) were the most efficient ones among NHC-Ir(III) complexes, compatible with the assumption that the secondary coordination effect, i.e. a peripheral constraint, was put into action. As the substituent R increases in size on going from H, Me, Ph, MePh, to diMePh, notable structural changes in the periphery are evident, while an increase of emission quantum yields is also seen. Such a peripheral difference was under scrutiny first with X-ray structural studies, and its manifestation in photophysics was investigated along with quantum calculations that finally addressed the peripheral effect being maximized at R = diMePh. In the application of PhOLED, the mer-Ir(C^∧C^diMePh)₃-doped multilayer device showed highly enhanced efficiency with an external quantum efficiency (EQE) of up to 8.1%, compared to that of the mer-Ir(C^∧C^H)₃-based device (1.2%), indicating the multiple positive effects of bulky aryl substitution of Ir(III) dopant. A deep-blue CIE chromaticity diagram (0.16, 0.09) was achieved from the device using mer-Ir(C^∧C^diMePh)₃ as a dopant.

Quantitative calculations of the non-radiative rate of phosphorescent Ir(III) complexes

It has recently been proposed that the dominant non-radiative decay mechanism in blue Ir(iii) phosphors at room temperature is due to the low-lying non-radiative metal-centred triplet states. These are populated thermally via an activated transition from the highly radiative metal-to-ligand-charge-transfer states that are initially populated due to intersystem crossing following the radiative or electronic excitation of the phosphor. We apply transition state theory to quantitatively calculate the non-radiative decay rate of a family of Ir(iii) complexes containing N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands. We compare the, computationally inexpensive, one-dimensional theory with the, more accurate, multi-dimensional theory. Both methods find a non-radiative rate with an Arrhenius form (knr = kae-ΔE/kBT). The pre-exponential factors, ka, and activation energies, ΔE, are evaluated via density functional theory (DFT). The multi-dimensional theory shows that there is an order of magnitude variation in ka within this family of materials (between 3 × 1011 s-1 and 3 × 1012 s-1). This is not captured by the one-dimensional theory, which predicts very uniform rate constants in the middle of this range (∼1012 s-1). Nevertheless, the activated process involved, and the linear relationship between ka and knr, mean that ka plays a subtle role in determining knr. Consistent with this we find that both methods capture the trend observed experimentally in the non-radiative rates. Furthermore, the magnitude of the calculated knr is similar in both methods and in good agreement with experimental values [except for one complex with a very shallow activation barrier (<0.1 eV)]. It has previously been demonstrated that radiative decay rates can be accurately calculated from DFT. Combined with our results for the non-radiative rates, this implies that DFT methods can accurately predict the emission efficiency in Ir(iii) phosphors. Therefore, DFT calculations are both fast and accurate enough to play a significant role in the design of new deep blue Ir(iii) phosphors with high emission efficiency. Even the one-dimensional theory provides reasonable agreement with experiment. This suggests that a funneling approach - where only the best performing molecules, according to the one-dimensional theory, are studied in the more laborious multi-dimensional framework - could be a powerful strategy for designing active materials for phosphorescent organic light-emitting diodes (PHOLEDs) from first principles.

Roles of Ancillary Chelates and Overall Charges of Bis-tridentate Ir(III) Phosphors for OLED Applications

A series of charge-neutral bis-tridentate Ir(III) complexes (1, 3, and 4) were prepared via employing three distinctive tridentate prochelates, that is, (pzp^tBph^FO)H₂, [(phpyim)H₂·(PF₆)], and [(pimb)H₃·(PF₆)₂], which possess one dianionic pzp^tBph^FO, together with a second monoanionic tridentate chelate, namely, (pzp^tBph^FO)H, phpyim, and pimb, respectively. Moreover, a homoleptic, charge-neutral complex 2 was obtained by methylation of chelating (pzp^tBph^FO)H of 1 in basic media, while closely related cationic complexes 5-7 were obtained by further methylation of the remaining pyrazolate unit of previously mentioned neutral complexes 2-4, followed by anion metatheses. All of these Ir(III) metal complexes showed a broadened emission profile with an onset at ∼450 nm, a result of an enlarged ligand-centered ππ* transition gap, but with distinct efficiencies ranging from 0.8% to nearly unity. Comprehensive spectroscopic and computational approaches were executed, providing a correlation for the emission efficiencies versus energy gaps and between the metal-to-ligand charge transfer/ππ* emitting excited state and upper-lying metal-centered dd quenching state. Furthermore, Ir(III) complexes 3 and 4 were selected as dopant emitters in the fabrication of sky-blue phosphorescent organic light-emitting diodes, affording maximum external quantum efficiencies of 16.7 and 14.6% with CIE_x,y coordinates of (0.214, 0.454) and (0.191, 0.404) at a current density of 10² cd/m², respectively. Hence, this research highlights an inherent character of bis-tridentate Ir(III) complexes in achieving high phosphorescence quantum yield at the molecular level.

Organocatalytic enantioselective conjugate addition of pyrazolin-5-ones to arylomethylidene malonates

An efficient asymmetric organocatalytic conjugate addition reaction of pyrazolin-5-ones with arylomethylidene malonates has been successfully developed by employing bifunctional Cinchona derived thiourea organocatalysts. The protocol provides straightforward access to pyrazole substituted scaffolds in good yields with high stereocontrol.

Synthesis, X-ray structure, photophysical properties, and theoretical studies of six-membered cyclometalated iridium(iii) complexes: revisiting Ir(pnbi)2(acac)

We have determined the X-ray structure of Ir(pnbi)2(acac) (pnbi = 2-phenanthren-9-yl-1-phenyl-1H-benzimidazole; acac = acetylacetonate), which exhibits a six-membered metallocycle around the Ir center. This result stands in sharp contrast to previously postulated structures of Ir(pnbi)2(acac), which assumed a five-membered metallocycle. In this paper, we focus on the relative stability of five- and six-membered Ir(C^N) ring structures. DFT calculations of the total energies of Ir-(C^N) complexes indicated that six-membered structures are more stable when bulky substituents are present in the benzimidazole unit. When the phenanthrene group of pnbi was replaced with a naphthalene moiety, DFT calculations predicted that five-membered cycles are more stable than six-membered rings, which was confirmed experimentally by a single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The steric bulk of the phenanthrene-containing polyaromatic ring ligand thus induces greater interligand repulsion between the two ligands, which plays an important role in determining the cyclometalation route. The Ir complexes examined in this study exhibit red emission (λem ≈ 660 nm) with relatively low quantum yields.

Emissive Iridium(III) Complexes with Phosphorous-Containing Ancillary

Ir(III) metal complexes and related emitters bearing all kind of cyclometalated chromophoric chelates and non-chromophoric ancillary are extensively studied during the past three decades. Many of them have been found to display bright room temperature phosphorescence from triplet excited states in both solution and solid states, offering a possible application in contemporary optoelectronic technologies, including organic light emitting diodes, electrochemiluminescence, biological imaging and chemical sensing. Among reported materials, there are Ir(III) complexes with at least one phosphorus (P)-containing ligand and/or ancillary chelate, together with cyclometalates or equivalents that are in control of the actual emission energy. Particularly, possession of P-based donor can lead to divergent structural and photophysical properties compared to the traditional designs. This review aims to provide a literature overview as well as the authors' personal account to the development of relevant Ir(III) based phosphors bearing these P-donors. To the readers' convenience, the contents are subdivided into six sessions, according to whether or not they are charge natural, or with mono- or dianionic electronic character, and in accordance to their divergent bonding modes, i. e. monodentate, bidentate and tripodal coordination. In many cases, the P-based ancillaries offer an easy accessible route to the formation of efficient sky-blue and true-blue emitters due to their π-accepting property, together with enlarged emission energy gap and destabilized upper lying quenching state.

A direct access to heterobimetallic complexes by roll-over cyclometallation

Complexes of the type [Cp*Ir(N,N')Cl]⁺ (N,N' = 2-(2-dialkylaminopyrimidin-4-yl)pyrimidine) can undergo roll-over cyclometallation leading to a novel N,N'-donor site. Following this strategy heterobimetallic complexes including iridium(iii) and a Group X metal centre in the oxidation state +II were achieved.

Sky-blue emitting bridged diiridium complexes: beneficial effects of intramolecular π-π stacking

The potential of intramolecular π-π interactions to influence the photophysical properties of diiridium complexes is an unexplored topic, and provides the motivation for the present study. A series of diarylhydrazide-bridged diiridium complexes functionalised with phenylpyridine (ppy)-based cyclometalating ligands is reported. It is shown by NMR studies in solution and single crystal X-ray analysis that intramolecular π-π interactions between the bridging and cyclometalating ligands rigidify the complexes leading to high luminescence quantum efficiencies in solution and in doped films. Fluorine substituents on the phenyl rings of the bridge promote the intramolecular π-π interactions. Notably, these non-covalent interactions are harnessed in the rational design and synthesis of the first examples of highly emissive sky-blue diiridium complexes featuring conjugated bridging ligands, for which they play a vital role in the structural and photophysical properties. Experimental results are supported by computational studies.

Highly luminescent 2-phenylpyridine-free diiridium complexes with bulky 1,2-diarylimidazole cyclometalating ligands

While a number of highly emissive dinuclear Ir(iii) complexes have been reported, they have generally been restricted to structures based on 2-phenylpyridine (Hppy) cyclometalates.

From structure to structural dynamics: Ahmed Zewail's legacy

In this brief tribute to Ahmed Zewail, we highlight and place in the historical context, several of the major achievements that he and his colleagues have made in Femtochemistry (of which he was the principal instigator) and his introduction of ultrafast electron scattering, diffraction, microscopy and spectroscopy. By achieving a sub-picosecond temporal resolution, coupled with a picometer spatial resolution, he revolutionised our understanding of the corpus of chemical, physical, biological and materials science systems.

An Unprecedented Family of Luminescent Iridium(III) Complexes Bearing a Six-Membered Chelated Tridentate C^N^C Ligand

A new family consisting of three luminescent neutral Ir(III) complexes with the unprecedented [Ir(C^N^C)(N^N)Cl] architecture, where C^N^C is a bis(six-membered) chelating tridentate tripod ligand derived from 2-benzhydrylpyridine (bnpy) and N^N is 4,4'-di-tert-butyl-2,2'-bipyridine (dtBubpy), is reported. X-ray crystallography reveals an unexpected and unusual double C-H bond activation of the two distal nonconjugated phenyl rings of the bnpy coupled with a very short Ir-Cl bond trans to the pyridine of the bnpy ligand. Depending on the substitution on the bnpy ligand, phosphorescence, ranging from yellow to red, is observed in dichloromethane solution. A combined study using density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT (TD-DFT) corroborates the mixed charge-transfer nature of the related excited states.

Synthesis of Functionalized Pyrazoles via 1,3-Dipolar Cycloaddition of α-Diazo-β-ketophosphonates, Sufones and Esters with Electron-Deficient Alkenes

1,3-Dipolar cycloaddition of diazo compounds with olefinic substrates is a promising atom-economic strategy for the construction of functionalized pyrazoles. Over the last few years, our group has been engaged in the synthesis of phosphonyl/sulfonylpyrazoles and pyrazole esters by employing Bestmann-Ohira Reagent (BOR) and its sulfur and ester analogs as 1,3-dipole precursors with various dipolarophiles. This account describes the novel synthetic methods developed in our laboratory, in the perspective of closely related work by others, for the synthesis of phosphonyl/sulfonylpyrazoles, pyrazole esters and the total synthesis of Withasomnine, a natural product, by using 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition as the key step.

Blue Phosphorescent Zwitterionic Iridium(III) Complexes Featuring Weakly Coordinating nido-Carborane-Based Ligands

We report the development of a new class of phosphorescent zwitterionic bis(heteroleptic) Ir(III) compounds containing pyridyl ligands with weakly coordinating nido-carboranyl substituents. Treatment of phenylpyridine-based Ir(III) precursors with C-substituted ortho-carboranylpyridines in 2-ethoxyethanol results in a facile carborane deboronation and the formation of robust and highly luminescent metal complexes. The resulting nido-carboranyl fragments associate with the cationic Ir(III) center through primarily electrostatic interactions. These compounds phosphoresce at blue wavelengths (450-470 nm) both in a poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) matrix and in solution at 77 K. These complexes display structural stability at temperatures beyond 300 °C and quantum yields greater than 40%. Importantly, the observed quantum yields correspond to a dramatic 10-fold enhancement over the previously reported Ir(III) congeners featuring carboranyl-containing ligands in which the boron cluster is covalently attached to the metal. Ultimately, this work suggests that the use of a ligand framework containing a weakly coordinating anionic component can provide a new avenue for designing efficient Ir(III)-based phosphorescent emitters.
