Abstract
There has been much effort to improve excited-state lifetimes in photosensitizers based on earth-abundant first-row transition metals. Copper(I) complexes have gained significant attention in this field, and in most cases, sterically driven approaches are used to optimize their lifetimes. This study presents a series of three-coordinate copper(I) complexes (Cu1-Cu3) where the excited-state lifetime is extended by triplet-triplet energy transfer. The heteroleptic compounds feature a cyclohexyl-substituted β-diketiminate (CyNacNacMe) paired with aryl isocyanide ligands, giving the general formula Cu(CyNacNacMe)(CN-Ar) (CN-dmp = 2,6-dimethylphenyl isocyanide for Cu1; CN-pyr = 1-pyrenyl isocyanide for Cu2; CN-dmp-pyr = 2,6-dimethyl-4-(1-pyrenyl)phenyl isocyanide for Cu3). The nature, energies, and dynamics of the low-energy triplet excited states are assessed with a combination of photoluminescence measurements at room temperature and 77 K, ultrafast transient absorption (UFTA) spectroscopy, and DFT calculations. The complexes with the pyrene-decorated isocyanides (Cu2 and Cu3) exhibit extended excited-state lifetimes resulting from triplet-triplet energy transfer (TTET) between the short-lived charge-transfer excited state (3CT) and the long-lived pyrene-centered triplet state (3pyr). This TTET process is irreversible in Cu3, producing exclusively the 3pyr state, and in Cu2, the 3CT and 3pyr states are nearly isoenergetic, enabling reversible TTET and long-lived 3CT luminescence. The improved photophysical properties in Cu2 and Cu3 result in improvements in activity for both photocatalytic stilbene E/Z isomerization via triplet energy transfer and photoredox transformations involving hydrodebromination and C-O bond activation. These results illustrate that the extended excited-state lifetimes achieved through TTET result in newly conceived photosynthetically relevant earth-abundant transition metal complexes.

Abstract
Solar fuels catalysis is a promising route to efficiently harvesting, storing, and utilizing abundant solar energy. To achieve this promise, however, molecular systems must be designed with sustainable components that can balance numerous photophysical and chemical processes. To that end, we report on the structural and photophysical characterization of a series of Cu(I)-anthraquinone-based electron donor-acceptor dyads. The dyads utilized a heteroleptic Cu(I) bis-diimine architecture with a copper(I) bis-phenanthroline chromophore donor and anthraquinone electron acceptor. We characterized the structures of the complexes using x-ray crystallography and density functional theory calculations and the photophysical properties via resonance Raman and optical transient absorption spectroscopy. The calculations and resonance Raman spectroscopy revealed that excitation of the Cu(I) metal-to-ligand charge-transfer (MLCT) transition transfers the electron to a delocalized ligand orbital. The optical transient absorption spectroscopy demonstrated that each dyad formed the oxidized copper-reduced anthraquinone charge-separated state. Unlike most Cu(I) bis-phenanthroline complexes where increasingly bulky substituents on the phenanthroline ligands lead to longer MLCT excited-state lifetimes, here, we observe a decrease in the long-lived charge-separated state lifetime with increasing steric bulk. The charge-separated state lifetimes were best explained in the context of electron-transfer theory rather than with the energy gap law, which is typical for MLCT excited states, despite the complete conjugation between the phenanthroline and anthraquinone moieties.

Abstract
Metal complexes feature a wide range of available geometries, diversified lability, controllable hydrolytic stability, and easily available rich redox activity. These characteristics, combined with the specific properties of coordinated organic molecules, result in many different mechanisms of biological action, making each of the myriads of the classes of metal coordination compounds unique. This focused review presents combined and systematized results of the studies of a group of copper(I) (pseudo)halide complexes with aromatic diimines and tris(aminomethyl)phosphines of a general formula [CuX(NN)PR3], where X = I- or NCS-, NN = 2,2'-bipyridyl, 1,10-phenanthroline, 2,9-dimethyl-1,10-phenanthroline or 2,2'-biquinoline, and PR3 = air-stable tris(aminomethyl)phosphines. The structural and electronic properties of the phosphine ligands and luminescent complexes are discussed. The complexes with 2,9-dimethyl-1,10-phenanthroline, apart from being air- and water-stable, exhibit a very high in vitro antimicrobial activity against the Staphylococcus aureus and Candida albicans. Moreover, some of these complexes also show a strong in vitro antitumor activity against human ovarian carcinoma cell lines: MDAH 2774 and SCOV 3, CT26 (mouse colon carcinoma), and A549 (human lung adenocarcinoma) cell lines. The tested complexes are moderately able to induce DNA lesions through free radical processes, however the trends do not reflect observed differences in biological activity.

Abstract
Heteroleptic copper(I) complexes, with a diimine as a chromophoric unit and a bulky diphosphine as an ancillary ligand, have the advantage of a reduced pseudo Jahn-Teller effect in their excited state over the corresponding homoleptic bis(diimine) complexes. Nevertheless, their lowest absorption lies generally between 350 to 500 nm. Aiming at a strong absorption in the visible by stable heteroleptic Cu(I) complexes, we designed a novel diimine based on 4-(benzo[g]quinoxal-2'-yl)-1,2,3-triazole derivatives. The large π-conjugation of the benzoquinoxaline moiety shifted bathochromically the absorption with regard to other diimine-based Cu(I) complexes. Adding another Cu(I) core broadened the absorption and extended it to considerably longer wavelengths. Moreover, by fine-tuning the structure of the dichelating ligand, we achieved a panchromatic absorption up to 700 nm with a high molar extinction coefficient of 8000 M-1 cm-1 at maximum (λ = 570 nm), making this compound attractive for light-harvesting antennae.

Abstract
The electronic and structural properties of ten heteroleptic [Cu(NN)(PP)]+ complexes have been investigated. NN indicates 1,10-phenanthroline (phen) or 4,7-diphenyl-1,10-phenanthroline (Bphen); each of these ligands is combined with five PP bis-phosphine chelators, i.e., bis(diphenylphosphino)methane (dppm), 1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane (dppe), 1,3-bis(diphenylphosphino)propane (dppp), 1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)benzene (dppb), and bis[(2-diphenylphosphino)phenyl] ether (POP). All complexes are mononuclear, apart from those based on dppm, which are dinuclear. Experimental data-also taken from the literature and including electrochemical properties, X-ray crystal structures, UV-vis absorption spectra in CH2Cl2, luminescence spectra and lifetimes in solution, in PMMA, and as powders-have been rationalized with the support of density functional theory calculations. Temperature dependent studies (78-358 K) have been performed for selected complexes to assess thermally activated delayed fluorescence. The main findings are (i) dependence of the ground-state geometry on the crystallization conditions, with the same complex often yielding different crystal structures; (ii) simple model compounds with imposed C2 v symmetry ([Cu(phen)(PX3)2]+; X = H or CH3) are capable of modeling structural parameters as a function of the P-Cu-P bite angle, which plays a key role in dictating the overall structure of [Cu(NN)(PP)]+ complexes; (iii) as the P-Cu-P angle increases, the energy of the metal-to-ligand charge transfer absorption bands linearly increases; (iv) the former correlation does not hold for emission spectra, which are red-shifted for the weaker luminophores; (v) the larger the number of intramolecular π-interactions within the complex in the ground state, the higher the luminescence quantum yield, underpinning a geometry locking effect that limits the structural flattening of the excited state. This work provides a general framework to rationalize the structure-property relationships of [Cu(NN)(PP)]+, a class of compounds of increasing relevance for electroluminescent devices, photoredox catalysis, and solar-to-fuels conversion, which so far have been investigated in an unsystematic fashion, eluding a comprehensive understanding.

Abstract
The kinetics of photoinduced electron and energy transfer in a family of tetrapyridophenazine-bridged heteroleptic homo- and heterodinuclear copper(i) bis(phenanthroline)/ruthenium(ii) polypyridyl complexes were studied using ultrafast optical and multi-edge X-ray transient absorption spectroscopies. This work combines the synthesis of heterodinuclear Cu(i)-Ru(ii) analogs of the homodinuclear Cu(i)-Cu(i) targets with spectroscopic analysis and electronic structure calculations to first disentangle the dynamics at individual metal sites by taking advantage of the element and site specificity of X-ray absorption and theoretical methods. The excited state dynamical models developed for the heterodinuclear complexes are then applied to model the more challenging homodinuclear complexes. These results suggest that both intermetallic charge and energy transfer can be observed in an asymmetric dinuclear copper complex in which the ground state redox potentials of the copper sites are offset by only 310 meV. We also demonstrate the ability of several of these complexes to effectively and unidirectionally shuttle energy between different metal centers, a property that could be of great use in the design of broadly absorbing and multifunctional multimetallic photocatalysts. This work provides an important step toward developing both a fundamental conceptual picture and a practical experimental handle with which synthetic chemists, spectroscopists, and theoreticians may collaborate to engineer cheap and efficient photocatalytic materials capable of performing coulombically demanding chemical transformations.

Abstract
Using the HETPHEN approach, five new heteroleptic copper(I) complexes composed of a push-pull 4,4'-styryl-6,6'-dimethyl-2,2'-bipyridine ligand and a bulky bis[(2-diphenylphosphino)phenyl]-ether (DPEphos) or a bis2,9-mesityl phenanthroline (Mes2Phen) were prepared and characterized by electronic absorption spectroscopy, electrochemistry, and TD-DFT calculations. These complexes exhibit very intense absorption bands in the visible region with extinction coefficient in the range of 5-7 × 10(4) M(-1) cm(-1). The analysis of the position, intensity and band shape indicates a strong contribution from an intra-ligand charge-transfer transition centered on the styrylbipyridine ligand along with MLCT transitions. These new complexes experimentally demonstrate that good light harvesting properties with bis-diimine copper(I) complexes are a reality if one chooses suitable ligands in the coordination sphere. This constitutes a milestone towards using bis-diimine copper(I) complexes for solar energy conversion (artificial photosynthesis and solar cells).

Abstract
Preparation of [Cu(NN)(PP)](+) derivatives has been systematically investigated starting from two libraries of phenanthroline (NN) derivatives and bis-phosphine (PP) ligands, namely, (A) 1,10-phenanthroline (phen), neocuproine (2,9-dimethyl-1,10-phenanthroline, dmp), bathophenanthroline (4,7-diphenyl-1,10-phenanthroline, Bphen), 2,9-diphenethyl-1,10-phenanthroline (dpep), and 2,9-diphenyl-1,10-phenanthroline (dpp); (B) bis(diphenylphosphino)methane (dppm), 1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane (dppe), 1,3-bis(diphenylphosphino)propane (dppp), 1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)benzene (dppb), 1,1'-bis(diphenylphosphino)ferrocene (dppFc), and bis[(2-diphenylphosphino)phenyl] ether (POP). Whatever the bis-phosphine ligand, stable heteroleptic [Cu(NN)(PP)](+) complexes are obtained from the 2,9-unsubstituted-1,10-phenanthroline ligands (phen and Bphen). By contrast, heteroleptic complexes obtained from dmp and dpep are stable in the solid state, but a dynamic ligand exchange reaction is systematically observed in solution, and the homoleptic/heteroleptic ratio is highly dependent on the bis-phosphine ligand. Detailed analysis revealed that the dynamic equilibrium resulting from ligand exchange reactions is mainly influenced by the relative thermodynamic stability of the different possible complexes. Finally, in the case of dpp, only homoleptic complexes were obtained whatever the bis-phosphine ligand. Obviously, steric effects resulting from the presence of the bulky phenyl rings on the dpp ligand destabilize the heteroleptic [Cu(NN)(PP)](+) complexes. In addition to the remarkable thermodynamic stability of [Cu(dpp)2]BF4, this negative steric effect drives the dynamic complexation scenario toward almost exclusive formation of homoleptic [Cu(NN)2](+) and [Cu(PP)2](+) complexes. This work provides the definitive rationalization of the stability of [Cu(NN)(PP)](+) complexes, marking the way for future developments in this field.

Abstract
Heteroleptic copper compounds have been designed and synthesized on solid supports. Chemical redox agents were used to change the oxidation state of the SiO(2)-immobilized heteroleptic copper compounds from Cu(I) to Cu(II) and then back to Cu(I). Optical spectroscopy of a dimethyl sulfoxide suspension demonstrated the reversibility of the Cu(I)/Cu(II) SiO(2)-immobilized compounds by monitoring the metal-to-ligand charge transfer peak at about 450 nm. Electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy was used to monitor the isomerization of Cu(I) tetrahedral to Cu(II) square planar. This conformational change corresponds to a 90° rotation of one ligand with respect to the other. Conductive atomic force microscopy and macroscopic gold electrodes were used to study the electrical properties of a p(+) Si-immobilized heteroleptic copper compound where switching between the Cu(I)/Cu(II) states occurred at -0.8 and +2.3 V.
