Abstract
Chemical transformations that result in either the formation or cleavage of carbon-heteroatom bonds are among the most important processes in the chemical sciences. Herein, we present a review on the reactivity of well-defined, late-transition metal complexes that result in the making and breaking of C-N, C-O and C-S bonds via fundamental organometallic reactions, i.e. oxidative addition, reductive elimination, insertion and elimination reactions. When appropriate, emphasis is placed on structural and spectroscopic characterization techniques, as well as mechanistic data.

Abstract
A series of dinuclear pyridine-4-thiolate (4-Spy)-bridged rhodium and iridium compounds [M(μ-4-Spy)(diolef)]2 [diolef = 1,5-cyclooctadiene (cod), M = Rh (1), Ir (2); diolef = 2,5-norbornadiene (nbd), M = Rh (3)] were prepared by the reaction of Li(4-Spy) with the appropriate compound [M(μ-Cl)(diolef)]2 (M = Rh, Ir). The dinuclear compound [Rh(μ-4-Spy)(CO)(PPh3)]2 (4) was obtained by the reaction of [Rh(acac)(CO)(PPh3)] (acac = acetylacetonate) with 4-pySH. Compounds 1-4 were assessed as metalloligands in self-assembly reactions with the cis-blocked acceptors [M(cod)(NCCH3)2](BF4) [M = Rh (a), Ir (b)] and [M(H2O)2(dppp)](OTf)2 [M = Pd (c), Pt (d); dppp = 1,3-bis(diphenylphosphino)propane]. The homometallic hexanuclear metallomacrocycles [{M2(μ-4-Spy)2(cod)2}2{M(cod)}2](BF4)2 (M = Rh [(1a)2], Ir [(2b)2]) and the heterometallic hexanuclear metallomacrocycles [{Rh2(μ-4-Spy)2(cod)2}2{Ir(cod)}2](BF4)2 [(1b)2], [{Rh2(μ-4-Spy)2(cod)2}2{M'(dppp)}2](OTf)4 (M' = Pd [(1c)2], Pt [(1d)2]), and [{Ir2(μ-4-Spy)2(cod)2}2{M'(dppp)}2](OTf)4 (M' = Pd [(2c)2], Pt [(2d)2]) were obtained. NMR spectroscopy in combination with electrospray ionization mass spectrometry was used to elucidate the nature of the metalloligands and their respective supramolecular assemblies. Most of the synthesized species were found to be nonrigid in solution, and their fluxional behavior was studied by variable-temperature (1)H NMR spectroscopy. An X-ray diffraction study of the assemblies (1a)2 and (1d)2 revealed the formation of rectangular (9.6 Å × 6.6 Å) hexanuclear metallomacrocycles with alternating dinuclear (Rh2) and mononuclear (Rh or Pt) corners. The hexanuclear core is supported by four pyridine-4-thiolate linkers, which are bonded through the thiolate moieties to the dinuclear rhodium units, exhibiting a bent-anti arrangement, and through the peripheral pyridinic nitrogen atoms to the mononuclear corners.

Abstract
Several bis(hydrosulfido)-bridged dinuclear rhodium(I) compounds, [{Rh(mu-SH)(L)(2)}(2)], have been prepared from rhodium(I) acetylacetonato complexes, [Rh(acac)(L)(2)], and H(2)S(g). Reaction of [Rh(acac){P(OPh)(3)}(2)] with H(2)S(g) affords the dinuclear bis(hydrosulfido)-bridged compound [{Rh(mu-SH){P(OPh)(3)}(2)}(2)] (1). However, reaction of complexes [Rh(acac)(CO)(PR(3))] with H(2)S(g) gives the dinuclear compound [{Rh(mu-SH)(CO)(PR(3))}(2)] (R=Cy, 2; R=Ph, 4) and the trinuclear cluster [Rh(3)(mu-H)(mu(3)-S)(2)(CO)(3)(PR(3))(3)] (R=Cy, 3; R=Ph, 5). The selective synthesis of both type of compounds has been carried out by control of the H(2)S(g) concentration in the reaction media. The trinuclear hydrido-sulfido cluster [Rh(3)(mu-H)(mu(3)-S)(2)(CO)(3)(PPh(3))(3)] (5) has been also obtained by reaction of [{Rh(mu-SH)(CO)(PPh(3))}(2)] (4) with [Rh(acac)(CO)(PPh(3))], proceeding through the trinuclear hydrosulfido-sulfido intermediate [Rh(3)(mu(3)-SH)(mu(3)-S)(CO)(3)(PPh(3))(3)]. The molecular structures of complexes 1 and 3 have been determined by X-ray diffraction methods. Compound 1 is stable in solution, but complexes 2 and 4 slowly transform in solution into the trinuclear hydrido-sulfido clusters 3 and 5, respectively, with the release of H(2)S(g) in a reversible way. (1)H NMR kinetic experiments for the transformation of 4 into 5 have revealed that this transformation follows second-order-type kinetic. The following activation parameters, DeltaH( not equal)=24+/-3 kJ mol(-1) and of DeltaS( not equal)=-223+/-8 J K(-1) mol(-1), have been calculated from the determination of the second-order rate constants in the temperature range 30-45 degrees C. The large negative value of the activation entropy is consistent with an associative character of the rate-determining step. A plausible multistep mechanism based on the chemical behaviour of hydrosulfido-metal complexes and compatible with the kinetic behaviour has been proposed.
