Coordination Polymers Based on Aluminum(III) Porphyrins

Supramolecular template-directed synthesis of triazole oligomers

Sandwich complexes formed by two zinc porphyrins and a diamine ligand (DABCO) have been used as a supramolecular template to direct the synthesis of triazole oligomers. Monomer units equipped with two polymerizable functional groups, an alkyne and an azide, were attached to the template via ester bonds between a phenol unit on the monomer and benzoic acid units on the porphyrin. Self-assembly of the zinc porphyrins by addition of DABCO led to a supramolecular complex containing four of the monomer units, two on each porphyrin. CuAAC oligomerisation was carried out in the presence of a chain capping agent to prevent intermolecular reactions between the templated products, which carry reactive chain ends. The templated-directed oligomerisation resulted in selective formation of a duplex, which contains two identical chains of triazole oligomers connecting the porphyrin linkers. The effective molarity for the intramolecular CuAAC reactions on the template is 3–9 mM, and because the triazole backbone has a direction, the product duplex was obtained as a 4 : 1 mixture of the parallel and antiparallel isomers. Hydrolysis of the ester bonds connecting the oligomers to the template gave a single product, the phenol 2-mer, in excellent yield. The introduction of a supramolecular element into the template considerably broadens the scope of the covalent template-directed oligomerisation methodology that we previously developed for the replication of sequence information in synthetic oligomers.

A supramolecular metalloporphyrin assembly was used as a disposable template for controlling the oligomerisation of covalently attached monomer building blocks to give a linear oligomeric product that is not accessible via untemplated reactions.

Fluorinated aluminum(III) porphyrins: Synthesis, spectroscopy, electrochemistry and photochemistry

A series of fluorinated free-base porphyrins (H2TPPF[Formula: see text], [Formula: see text] = 0, 8, 12, 20, 24) and the corresponding aluminum(III) porphyrin (AlTPPF[Formula: see text]-Ph, [Formula: see text] = 0, 8, 12, 20, 24) derivatives have been synthesized and their spectroscopic, redox and optical properties were investigated. The absorption studies show that the spectral shapes of investigated porphyrins are sensitive to the degree of fluorination on the meso-phenyl units. Analogously, the fluorescence quantum yields and singlet-state lifetimes depend on the number of fluorine atoms, and decrease by increasing the number of fluorine atoms. The H2TPPF[Formula: see text] and AlTPPF[Formula: see text]-Ph ([Formula: see text] = 8, 12, 20, 24) derivatives exhibited lower fluorescence intensities compared to the H2TPP and AlTPP, respectively. However, the AlTPPF[Formula: see text]-Ph ([Formula: see text] = 0, 8, 12, 20, 24) derivatives yield relatively a strong fluorescence compared to the well-known ZnTPP. As predicted, the redox potentials are shifted to the more positive side by increasing the fluorine atoms. The Lewis acidity of AlTPPF[Formula: see text]-Ph was quantified by using the absorption and fluorescence titrations with the Lewis base [Formula: see text]-methylimidazole (Me-Im). The titration data suggests that the Lewis acidity of the Al center rises when increasing the number of fluorine atoms on the porphyrin. Together, the high fluorescence quantum yields, high-potentials, unique optical and redox properties suggest that the investigated porphyrins could be potential sensitizers to mimic various components of artificial photosynthetic systems for the production of solar fuels.

Decelerating Charge Recombination Using Fluorinated Porphyrins in N,N-Bis(3,4,5-trimethoxyphenyl)aniline-Aluminum(III) Porphyrin-Fullerene Reaction Center Models

In supramolecular reaction center models, the lifetime of the charge-separated state depends on many factors. However, little attention has been paid to the redox potential of the species that lie between the donor and acceptor in the final charge separated state. Here, we report on a series of self-assembled aluminum porphyrin-based triads that provide a unique opportunity to study the influence of the porphyrin redox potential independently of other factors. The triads, BTMPA-Im→AlPorF_n-Ph-C₆₀ (n = 0, 3, 5), were constructed by linking the fullerene (C₆₀) and bis(3,4,5-trimethoxyphenyl)aniline (BTMPA) to the aluminum(III) porphyrin. The porphyrin (AlPor, AlPorF₃, or AlPorF₅) redox potentials are tuned by the substitution of phenyl (Ph), 3,4,5-trifluorophenyl (PhF₃), or 2,3,4,5,6-pentafluorophenyl (PhF₅) groups in its meso positions. The C₆₀ and BTMPA units are bound axially to opposite faces of the porphyrin plane via covalent and coordination bonds, respectively. Excitation of all of the triads results in sequential electron transfer that generates the identical final charge separated state, BTMPA^•+-Im→AlPorF_n-Ph-C₆₀^•-, which lies energetically 1.50 eV above the ground state. Despite the fact that the radical pair is identical in all of the triads, remarkably, the lifetime of the BTMPA^•+-Im→AlPorF_n-Ph-C₆₀^•- radical pair was found to be very different in each of them, that is, 1240, 740, and 56 ns for BTMPA-Im→AlPorF₅-Ph-C₆₀, BTMPA-Im→AlPorF₃-Ph-C₆₀, and BTMPA-Im→AlPor-Ph-C₆₀, respectively. These results clearly suggest that the charge recombination is an activated process that depends on the midpoint potential of the central aluminum(III) porphyrin (AlPorF_n).

Synthesis and characterization of metallo-supramolecular polymers

The incorporation of metal centers into the backbone of polymers has led to the development of a broad range of organometallic and coordination compounds featuring properties that are relevant for potential applications in diverse areas of research, ranging from energy storage/conversion to bioactive or self-healing materials. In this review, the basic concepts and synthetic strategies leading to these types of materials as well as the scope of available characterization techniques will be summarized and discussed.

Self-Assembly of Russian Doll Concentric Porphyrin Nanorings

Electronic communication between concentric macrocycles with wave functions that extend around their circumferences can lead to remarkable behavior, as illustrated by multiwalled carbon nanotubes and photosynthetic chlorophyll arrays. However, it is difficult to hold one π-conjugated molecular ring inside another. Here, we show that ring-in-ring complexes, consisting of a 6-porphyrin ring locked inside a 12-porphyrin ring, can be assembled by placing different metals in the two rings (zinc and aluminum). A bridging ligand with carboxylate and imidazole binding sites forms spokes between the two rings, resulting in a highly cooperative supramolecular self-assembly process. Excitation is transferred from the inner 6-ring to the outer 12-ring of this Russian doll complex within 40 ps. These complexes lead to a form of template-directed synthesis in which one nanoring promotes formation of a larger concentric homologous ring; here, the effective template is an eight-component noncovalent assembly. Russian doll templating provides a new approach to amplifying the size of a covalent nanostructure.

Ultrafast charge separation and charge stabilization in axially linked ‘tetrathiafulvalene–aluminum(iii) porphyrin–gold(iii) porphyrin’ reaction center mimics

Sequential electron transfer leading to charge stabilization in newly synthesized vertically aligned ‘tetrathiafulvalene–aluminum(iii) porphyrin–gold(iii) porphyrin’ supramolecular triads is reported.

Axially bonded pentads constructed on the Sn(iv) porphyrin scaffold

Three pentads based on the Sn(iv) porphyrin scaffold were synthesized using three covalently linked dyads such as porphyrin–ferrocene, porphyrin–BODIPY and porphyrin–sapphyrin as axial units. The spectral, electrochemical and photophysical properties were studied for these dyads and pentads.

Electrochemical and Spectroscopic Characterization of Aluminium(III)-para-methyl-meso-tetraphenylporphyrin Complexes Containing Substituted Salicylates as Axial Ligands

A series of aluminium(III)-p-methyl-meso-tetraphenylporphyrin (p-CH3TPP-Al(III)) containing axially coordinated salicylate anion [p-CH3TPP-Al-X)], where X = salicylate (SA), 4-chlorosalicylate (4-CSA), 5-chlorosalicylate (5-CSA), 5-flourosalicylate (5-FSA), 4-aminosalicylate (4-ASA), 5-aminosalicylate (5-ASA), 5-nitrosalicylate (5-NSA), and 5-sulfosalicylate (5-SSA), have been synthesized and characterized by various spectroscopic techniques including ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis), infrared (IR) spectroscopy, proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR) spectroscopy,13C NMR, and elemental analysis. A detailed study of electrochemistry of all the synthesized compounds has been done to compare their oxidation and reduction mechanisms and to explain the effect of axial coordination on their redox properties.

Introducing structural flexibility into porphyrin-DNA zipper arrays

A more flexible nucleotide building block for the synthesis of new DNA based porphyrin-zipper arrays is described. Changing the rigid acetylene linker between the porphyrin substituent and the 2'-deoxyuridine to a more flexible propargyl amide containing linkage leads in part to an increased duplex stability. The CD spectra reveal different electronic interactions between the porphyrins depending on the type of linker used. Molecular modelling suggests large variation of the relative orientation of the porphyrins within the major groove of the DNA. The porphyrins can be metallated post-synthetically with different metals as shown with zinc, cobalt and copper. The spectroscopic features do not alter drastically upon metallation apart from the CD spectra, and the stability of the metal complex is highly dependent on the nature of the metal. As shown by CD spectroscopy, the zinc porphyrin is rapidly demetallated at high temperatures. Globular structure determination using SAXS indicates that a molecular assembly comprised of a two to four helical bundle dominates in solution at higher concentrations (≥50 μM) which is not observed by spectroscopy at lower concentrations (≤1 μM).
