Crystal Structure and Magnetic Properties of Two Isomeric Three-Dimensional Pyromellitate-Containing Cobalt(II) Complexes

A new two-dimensional folding sheet-like coordination polymer assembled from cadmium(II) and (S)-2-(benzylamino)succinic acid: synthesis, structure and properties

A new two-dimensional (2D) coordination polymer, namely, poly[[diaqua[μ₃-(S)-2-(benzylamino)succinato-κ⁴N,O¹:O^1':O⁴]cadmium(II)] monohydrate], {[Cd(C₁₁H₁₁NO₄)(H₂O)₂]·H₂O}_n, has been synthesized by the solvothermal reaction of Cd(CH₃COO)₂·2H₂O with the synthesized ligand (S)-2-(benzylamino)succinic acid (H₂L). The title compound has been structurally characterized by elemental analysis, IR spectroscopy and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. In the crystal structure, each Cd^II cation binds to three carboxylate groups from three symmetry-related L^2- dianions. The tetradentate L^2- ligand links three symmetry-related Cd^II cations into a 2D folding sheet, which can be simplified as a uninodal (3,3)-connected hcb net with the point symbol (6³). In the lattice, all the folding sheets are arranged in an interdigitated fashion and aggregate into zipper-like arrays through interlayer π-π interactions. The large and nonpolar side chain may play an important role in the formation and aggregation of the 2D sheet. The thermal stability and photoluminescence properties of the title compound were investigated, and it exhibits a blue emission with a quantum yield of 8%.

Alkali and alkaline earth coordination polymers constructed from benzene-1,2,4,5-tetracarboxylic acid and flexible dicarboxylate acid ligands: syntheses, structures and spectroscopic and thermal properties

Two new metal coordination complexes, namely, poly[aqua(μ₆-benzene-1,2,4,5-tetracarboxylic acid-κ⁸O¹:O¹,O²:O^2':O⁴:O⁴,O⁵:O^5')(μ-but-2-enedioato-κ²O¹:O⁴)potassium(I)], [K₂(C₄H₂O₄)(C₁₀H₆O₈)(H₂O)₂]_n or [K₂(fum)(H₄btec)(H₂O)₂]_n, (1), and poly[aqua(μ₈-2,5-dicarboxybenzene-1,4-dicarboxylato-κ¹²O¹:O^1',O²:O²,O^2':O^2':O⁴:O^4',O⁵:O⁵,O^5':O^5')(μ-ethanedioato-κ⁴O¹,O²:O^1',O^2')strontium(II)], [Sr₂(C₂O₄)(C₁₀H₄O₈)(H₂O)₂]_n or [Sr₂(ox)(H₂btec)(H₂O)₂]_n, (2) (H₄btec = benzene-1,2,4,5-tetracarboxylic acid, H₂btec = 2,5-dicarboxybenzene-1,4-dicarboxylate, fum = fumarate and ox = oxalate), have been obtained under hydrothermal conditions by reacting the different alkali and alkaline earth metal salts with H₄btec, fumaric acid (H₂fum) and oxalic acid (H₂ox). Complexes (1) and (2) were structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, IR and UV-Vis spectroscopy, powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) and thermogravimetic analysis-differential scanning calorimetry (TGA-DSC). Complex (1) displays a two-dimensional (2D) layer with the K⁺ ion in a distorted pentagonal bipyramidal geometry and exhibits a uninodal 6-connected hxl/Shubnikov plane net (3,6) with {3⁶.4⁶.5³} topology. Complex (2) displays a three-dimensional (3D) network structure, in which the Sr²⁺ ion is in a distorted monocapped square antiprism geometry. The framework possess a binodal (5,8)-connected net with the Schläfli symbol {3².4¹⁰.5⁸.6⁴.7⁴}{3².4⁶.5²}₂. The 3D Hirshfeld surfaces and 2D fingerprint plots show that the main interactions are the O...H/H...O intermolecular interactions. Moreover, the thermal decompositions of (1) and (2) in the temperature range 303-1273 K revealed that they both decompose in three steps and transform to the corresponding metal oxide.

From 1D Coordination Polymers to Metal Organic Frameworks by the Use of 2-Pyridyl Oximes

The synthesis and characterization of coordination polymers and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) has attracted a significant interest over the last decades due to their fascinating physical properties, as well as their use in a wide range of technological, environmental, and biomedical applications. The initial use of 2-pyridyl oximic ligands such as pyridine-2 amidoxime (H2pyaox) and 2-methyl pyridyl ketoxime (Hmpko) in combination with 1,2,4,5-benzene tetracarboxylic acid (pyromellitic acid), H4pma, provided access to nine new compounds whose structures and properties are discussed in detail. Among them, [Zn2(pma)(H2pyaox)2(H2O)2]n (3) and [Cu4(OH)2(pma)(mpko)2]n (9) are the first MOFs based on a 2-pyridyl oxime with 9 possessing a novel 3,4,5,8-c net topology. [Zn2(pma)(H2pyaox)2]n (2), [Cu2(pma)(H2pyaox)2(DMF)2]n (6), and [Cu2(pma)(Hmpko)2(DMF)2]n (8) join a small family of coordination polymers containing an oximic ligand. 9 exhibits selectivity for FeIII ions adsorption, as was demonstrated by a variety of techniques including UV-vis, EDX, and magnetism. DC magnetic susceptibility studies in 9 revealed the presence of strong antiferromagnetic interactions between the metal centers, which lead to a diamagnetic ground state; it was also found that the magnetic properties of 9 are affected by the amount of the encapsulated Fe3+ ions, which is a very desirable property for the development of magnetism-based sensors.

Four 3D coordination polymers based on layers with single syn-anti carboxylate bridges: synthesis, structures, and magnetic properties

Four novel coordination polymers (CPs) based on a new 4-(3,5-dicarboxylphenyl) picolinic acid ligands (H3L), [M3(L)2(H2O)6]·4H2O (M3 = Mn3, 1; Co3, 2; Ni3, 3, Co1.01Ni1.99, 4), have been hydrothermally synthesized, and structurally and magnetically characterized. In these isomorphous CPs, octahedrally coordinated metal ions are linked by the single syn-anti carboxylate bridge (μ-COO) to give linear trinuclear motifs. The motifs are connected through the other single syn-anti carboxylate bridge (μ-COO) to give a 2D (4,4) layer, and the layers are interlinked by the L ligands into 3D frameworks. Magnetic measurement indicates that antiferromagnetic interactions between metal ions are mediated through the single syn-anti carboxylate bridges in 1 and 2, while the same carboxylate bridges in 3 transmit ferromagnetic couplings. The bimetallic CP 4 shows interesting complicated magnetic behaviors due to the competition effect of Co(ii) and Ni(ii) ions.

Homochiral coordination polymers constructed from V-shaped oxybisbenzoyl-based amino acid derivatives: structures, magnetic and photoluminescence properties

Five novel amino acid-modified HCPs have been prepared using the V-shaped semi-rigid 4,4′-oxybis(benzoic acid) instead of usual rigid polycarboxylate units.

Spectrally-resolved third-harmonic generation and the fundamental role of O-HCl hydrogen bonding in Oh, Td-cobalt(ii) tetraphenylmethane-based coordination polymers

The reaction of a phosphonate-diester tetraphenylmethane-based tecton, tetrakis[4-(diethoxyphosphoryl)phenyl]methane, (L) with cobalt(ii) chloride afforded a centrosymmetric coordination polymer (CP), [L·2Co(H₂O)₄²⁺·2CoCl₄^2-]_n, 2-Cl, possessing simultaneously octahedral (O_h) and tetrahedral (T_d) metal centers. This material served as a model compound for the demonstration of factors influencing the spectral dependence of one of the nonlinear optical (NLO) phenomena, the third-harmonic generation (THG). The spectrally-resolved THG (SR-THG) measurements in the range from 1125 to 1750 nm revealed that a maximum of THG response is obtained when the fundamental beam is around 1300 nm. The SR-THG study was combined with an analysis of the self-absorption effects of pumping and of third-harmonic radiation; based on these results, we put forward a hypothesis that the THG action spectrum is influenced more by the ability of the material to self-absorb the third harmonic rather than by the extent of self-absorption of the pumping radiation. Apart from investigations of NLO properties, we have explored coordination and particularly the supramolecular interactions that build up the 2-Cl CP. Despite the tetrahedral, spatial shape of the ligand L, CP 2-Cl has a two-dimensional net. The structure was found to be strongly supported by O-HCl hydrogen bonds, since each CoCl₄^2- complex anion is an acceptor of eight of such interactions within a distorted square grid layer of cobalt(ii) ions. While coordination and hydrogen-bonded nets are both featuring the sql topology when treated separately, the consideration of both of them as topological paths yields a trinodal 4,4,6-connected net, described by the point symbol (4²·8⁴)(4⁵·6)₂(4⁶·6⁶·8³)₂. SR-THG and structural studies of 2-Cl have been also supported by far- and mid-infrared spectroscopy, UV-Vis-NIR solid state absorption analysis, thermogravimetry and preliminary magnetic characterization.

A new two-dimensional extended adenine and thiophenecarboxylate mixed-ligand zinc(II) complex: synthesis, structure, thermostability and luminescent properties

The design and preparation of crystalline polymeric materials has attracted increasing attention due to their diverse applications as functional materials in gas storage, separation, catalysis, sensing and photoluminescence. The judicious selection of organic linkers is critical for varying the coordination behaviour of the metal ions and determining the overall characteristics of the networks. A new adenine-based Zn(II) coordination polymer, [Zn(C6H2O4S)(C5H5N5)]n or [Zn(tdc)(9H-ade)] (H2tdc is thiophene-2,5-dicarboxylic acid and ade is adenine), has been prepared hydrothermally and the crystal structure exhibits in its packing two-dimensional (4,4) grid sheets parallel to the ab plane, featuring two distinct square cavities delimited by the two types of ligands and the Zn(II) ions with the dimensions 6.6 × 6.6 and 10.2 × 10.2 Å (based on the Zn...Zn distance). The title complex shows enhanced photoluminescence at 378 nm compared to the free ligands, suggesting that the coordination of H2tdc or adenine to the metal centre effectively increases the rigidity of the ligands and reduces the energy loss by radiative decay of intraligand excited states.

Towards a better understanding of honeycomb alternating magnetic networks

The honeycomb mixed-ligand complex {[Co₂(bpm)(ox)₂]_n·5nH₂O} was prepared and magneto-structurally characterized. The values of the antiferromagnetic interactions through bpm (J_bpm= −5.0 cm⁻¹) and ox (J_ox= −11.1 cm⁻¹) ligands obtained by fit were suported by DFT type calculations.

Synthesis, structures and magnetic properties in 3d-electron-rich isostructural complexes based on chains with sole syn–anti carboxylate bridges

A series of isostructures based on 2,2′,4,4′-biphenyltetracarboxylic acid have been synthesized via solvothermal reaction, whereas magnetic studies reveal the polymers with sole syn–anti carboxylate bridges show different magnetic behaviors of uniform chains.

Solvent-induced synthesis of cobalt(ii) coordination polymers based on a rigid ligand and flexible carboxylic acid ligands: syntheses, structures and magnetic properties

An unusual cobalt(ii)-based single-walled metal–organic nanotube

Self-adaption to the formation of an unusual cobalt(ii)-based single-walled metal–organic nanotube is reported. In addition, a pseudo-merohedral twinning problem encountered in the X-ray diffraction analysis was solved, which significantly improves the crystallographic results.

Distinct structures of coordination polymers incorporating flexible triazole-based ligand: topological diversities, crystal structures and property studies

Six new coordination polymers, namely {[Zn(btec)(0.5)(btmb)]·2H(2)O}(n) (1), {[Co(btec)(0.5)(btmb)(H(2)O)]·3H(2)O}(n) (2), {[Cu(btec)(0.5)(btmb)]·H(2)O}(n) (3), {[Cu(4)(btc)(4)(btmb)(4)]·H(2)O}(n) (4), {[Co(3)(bta)(2)(btmb)(2)]·2H(2)O}(n) (5), [Co(Hbta)(btmb)](n) (6) (H(4)btec = 1,2,4,5-benzenetetracarboxylate, H(3)btc = 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylate, H(3)bta = 1,2,4-benzenetricarboxylate and btmb = 4,4'-bis(1,2,4-triazol-1-ylmethyl)biphenyl), have been successfully synthesized under hydrothermal conditions. All these complexes were structurally determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, elemental analysis, IR, TGA and XRD. Crystal structural analysis reveals that 1 is the first example of an unusual 3D framework with (8(6)) topology containing a 2D molecular fabric structure. Complex 2 exhibits a 3D NbO network with (6(4)·8(2)) topology. In 3, Cu(II) ions are coordinated by anti-conformational btmb ligands to form left- and right-handed double helices, which are further bridged by the 4-connected btec(4-) anions to give a 3D porous network. Complex 4 presents a rare 3D gra network structure with (6(3))(6(9)·8) topology. 5 and 6 were obtained through controllable pH values of solution, 5 features a scarce binodal (3,8)-connected tfz-d framework with the trinuclear Co(II) clusters acting as nodes, whereas 6 has an extended 2D 4(4) grid-like layer and the adjacent 2D layers are interconnected by strong hydrogen bonding interactions into a 3D supramolecular framework. The structural diversities indicate that distinct organic acid ligands, the nature of metal ions and the pH value play crucial roles in modulating the formation of the resulting coordination complexes and the connectivity of the ultimate topological nets. Moreover, magnetic susceptibility measurement of 5 indicates the presence of weak ferromagnetic interactions between the Co(II) ions bridged by carboxylate groups.

Study of the influence of the bridge on the magnetic coupling in cobalt(II) complexes

Two new cobalt(II) complexes of formula [Co(2)(bta)(H(2)O)(6)](n) x 2nH(2)O (1) and [Co(phda)(H(2)O)](n) x nH(2)O (2) [H(4)bta = 1,2,4,5-benzenetetracarboxylic acid, H(2)phda = 1,4-phenylenediacetic acid] have been characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction. Compound 1 is a one-dimensional compound where the bta(4-) ligand acts as 2-fold connector between the cobalt(II) ions through two carboxylate groups in para-conformation. Triply bridged dicobalt(II) units occur within each chain, a water molecule, a carboxylate group in the syn-syn conformation, and an oxo-carboxylate with the mu(2)O(1);kappa(2)O(1),O(2) coordination mode acting as bridges. Compound 2 is a three-dimensional compound, where the phda(2-) group acts as a bridge through its two carboxylate groups, one of them adopting the mu-O,O' coordination mode in the syn-syn conformation and the other exhibiting the single mu(2)-O'' bridging mode. As in 1, chains of cobalt(II) ions occur in 2 with a water molecule, a syn-syn carboxylate group, and an oxo-carboxylate constitute the triply intrachain bridging skeleton. Each chain is linked to other four ones through the phda(2-) ligand, giving rise to the three-dimensional structure. The values of the intrachain cobalt-cobalt separation are 3.1691(4) (1) and 3.11499(2) A (2) whereas those across the phenyl ring of the extended bta(4-) (1) and phda(2-) (2) groups are 10.1120(6) and 11.4805(69 A, respectively. The magnetic properties of 1 and 2 have been investigated in the temperature range 1.9-300 K, and their analysis has revealed the occurrence of moderate intrachain ferromagnetic couplings [J = +5.4 (1) and +2.16 cm(-1) (2), J being the isotropic magnetic coupling parameter], the magnetic coupling through the extended bta(4-) and phda(2-) with cobalt-cobalt separations larger than 10 A being negligible. The nature and magnitude of the magnetic interactions between the high-spin cobalt(II) ions in 1 and 2 are compared to those of related systems and discussed as a function of the complementarity-countercomplementarity effects of the triple bridges.
