Abstract
In our attempts to prepare coordination polymers by reaction of FeCl3·6H2O and Ni(OH)2 in the presence of dithiolenes HSC6H2X2SH (X = Cl or H), several ion pairs of compounds containing the anionic entity [Ni(SC6H2X2S)2]− were obtained instead. It was also found that other species without dithiolene ligands were formed in these reactions, giving rise to different ion pairs and a tetrametallic cluster. The careful isolation of the different types of crystalline solids allowed the characterization of all of the resulting compounds by single crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD). In order to establish the amount of nickel and iron present in the crystals, complementary total reflection X-ray fluorescence (TXRF) analyses were performed. The eight different structural types that were obtained are described and compared with related ones found in the literature.

Abstract
Irradiation at 460 nm of [Mo3(μ3-S)(μ2-S2)3(S2CNR2)3]I ([2a]I, R = Me; [2b]I, R = Et; [2c]I, R = iBu; [2d]I, R = CH2C6H5) in a mixed aqueous-polar organic medium with [Ru(bipy)3]2+ as photosensitizer and Et3N as electron donor leads to H2 evolution. Maximum activity (300 turnovers, 3 h) is found with R = iBu in 1:9 H2O:MeCN; diminished activity is attributed to deterioration of [Ru(bipy)3]2+. Monitoring of the photolysis mixture by mass spectrometry suggests transformation of [Mo3(μ3-S)(μ2-S2)3(S2CNR2)3]+ to [Mo3(μ3-S)(μ2-S)3(S2CNR2)3]+ via extrusion of sulfur on a time scale of minutes without accumulation of the intermediate [Mo3S6(S2CNR2)3]+ or [Mo3S5(S2CNR2)3]+ species. Deliberate preparation of [Mo3S4(S2CNEt2)3]+ ([3]+) and treatment with Et2NCS21- yields [Mo3S4(S2CNEt2)4] (4), where the fourth dithiocarbamate ligand bridges one edge of the Mo3 triangle. Photolysis of 4 leads to H2 evolution but at ∼25% the level observed for [Mo3S7(S2CNEt2)3]+. Early time monitoring of the photolyses shows that [Mo3S4(S2CNEt2)4] evolves H2 immediately and at constant rate, while [Mo3S7(S2CNEt2)3]+ shows a distinctive incubation prior to a more rapid H2 evolution rate. This observation implies the operation of catalysts of different identity in the two cases. Photolysis solutions of [Mo3S7(S2CNiBu2)3]+ left undisturbed over 24 h deposit the asymmetric Mo6 cluster [(iBu2NCS2)3(μ2-S2)2(μ3-S)Mo3](μ3-S)(μ3-η2,η1-S',η1-S″-S2)[Mo3(μ2-S)3(μ3-S)(S2CNiBu2)2(μ2-S2CNiBu2)] in crystalline form, suggesting that species with this hexametallic composition and core topology are the probable H2-evolving catalysts in photolyses beginning with [Mo3S7(S2CNR2)3]+. When used as solvent, N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) suppresses H2-evolution but to a greater degree for [Mo3S4(S2CNEt2)4] than for [Mo3S7(S2CNEt2)3]+. Recrystallization of [Mo3S4(S2CNEt2)4] from DMF affords [Mo3S4(S2CNEt2)4(η1,κO-DMF)] (5), implying that inhibition by DMF arises from competition for a Mo coordination site that is requisite for H2 evolution. Computational assessment of [Mo3S4(S2CNMe2)3]+ following addition of 2H+ and 2e- suggests a Mo(H)-μ2(SH) intermediate as the lowest energy species for H2 elimination. An analogous pathway may be available to the Mo6 cluster via dissociation of one end of the μ2-S2CNR2 ligand, a known hemilabile ligand type, in the [Mo3S4]4+ fragment.

Abstract
Here we report that capping the molecule TTFtt (TTFtt = tetrathiafulvalene-2,3,6,7-tetrathiolate) with dialkyl tin groups enables the isolation of a stable series of redox congeners and facile transmetalation to Ni and Pd. TTFtt has been proposed as an attractive building block for molecular materials for two decades as it combines the redox chemistry of TTF and dithiolene units. TTFttH4, however, is inherently unstable and the incorporation of TTFtt units into complexes or materials typically proceeds through the in situ generation of the tetraanion TTFtt4-. Capping of TTFtt4- with Bu2Sn2+ units dramatically improves the stability of the TTFtt moiety and furthermore enables the isolation of a redox series where the TTF core carries the formal charges of 0, +1, and +2. All of these redox congeners show efficient and clean transmetalation to Ni and Pd resulting in an analogous series of bimetallic complexes capped by 1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane (dppe) ligands. Furthermore, by using the same transmetalation method, we synthesized analogous palladium complexes capped by 1,1'-bis(diphenylphosphino)ferrocene (dppf) which had been previously reported. All of these species have been thoroughly characterized through a systematic survey of chemical and electronic properties by techniques including cyclic voltammetry (CV), ultraviolet-visible-near infrared spectroscopy (UV-vis-NIR), electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy (EPR), nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). These detailed synthetic and spectroscopic studies highlight important differences between the transmetalation strategy presented here and previously reported synthetic methods for the installation of TTFtt. In addition, the utility of this stabilization strategy can be illustrated by the observation of unusual TTF radical-radical packing in the solid state and dimerization in the solution state. Theoretical calculations based on variational 2-electron reduced density matrix methods have been used to investigate these unusual interactions and illustrate fundamentally different levels of covalency and overlap depending on the orientations of the TTF cores. Taken together, this work demonstrates that tin-capped TTFtt units are ideal reagents for the installation of redox-tunable TTFtt ligands enabling the generation of entirely new geometric and electronic structures.

Abstract
Among single component molecular conductors, neutral radical gold dithiolene complexes [(R-thiazdt)2 Au]. derived from the N-alkyl-1,3-thiazoline-2-thione-4,5-dithiolate (R-thiazdt) ligand provide an extensive series of conducting, non-dimerized, half-filled band systems. Analogues of the known R=isopropyl (iPr) derivative were investigated here with R=NMe2 , cyclopropyl (cPr) and n-propyl (nPr), aiming at rationalizing the different solid state structures adopted by these compounds despite very closely related substituents on the heterocyclic nitrogen atom. An original crisscross organization within dimerized chains is observed with R=NMe2 , differing however from the analogous iPr derivative by a 180° rotation of the heterocyclic nitrogen substituent. On the other hand, the cyclopropyl and n-propyl substituents lead to robust, uniform, non-dimerized chains with a strongly 1 D electronic structure and a formal half-filled electronic structure. The semiconducting behaviour of these two radical complexes is characteristic of a Mott insulator, whose sensitivity to external pressure has been evaluated up to 2.5 GPa.

Abstract
The use of theoretical calculations has allowed us to predict the coordination behavior of dithiolene [M(SC6H4S)2]2- (M = Ni, Pd, Pt) entities, giving rise to the first organometallic polymers {[K2(μ-H2O)2][Ni(SC6H4S)2]}n and {[K2(μ-H2O)2(thf)]2[K2(μ-H2O)2(thf)2][Pd3(SC6H4S)6]}n by one-pot reactions of the corresponding d10 metal salts, 1,2-benzenedithiolene, and KOH. The polymers are based on σ,π interactions between potassium atoms and [M(SC6H4S)2]2- (M = Ni, Pd) entities. In contrast, only σ interactions are observed when the analogous platinum derivative is used instead, yielding the coordination polymer {[K2(μ-thf)2][Pt(SC6H4S)2]}n.

Abstract
One-pot reactions between Ni(ii), Pd(ii) or Pt(ii) salts and 3,6-dichloro-1,2-benzenedithiol (HSC6H2Cl2SH) in KOH medium under argon lead to a series of bis-dithiolene coordination polymers. X-ray analysis shows the presence of a common square planar complex [M(SC6H2Cl2S)2](2-) linked to potassium cations forming either a two-dimensional coordination polymer network for {[K2(μ-H2O)2(μ-thf)(thf)2][M(SC6H2Cl2S)2]}n [M = Ni () and Pd ()] or a one-dimensional coordination polymer for {[K2(μ-H2O)2(thf)6][Pt(SC6H2Cl2S)2]}n (). In the coordination environment of the potassium ions may slightly change leading to the two-dimensional coordination polymer {[K2(μ-H2O)(μ-thf)2][Pt(SC6H2Cl2S)2]}n () that crystallizes together with . The physical characterization of compounds show similar trends, they are diamagnetic and behave as semiconductors.

Abstract
Whereas the cluster [Mo3 S4 (acac)3 (py)3 ](+) ([1](+) , acac=acetylacetonate, py=pyridine) reacts with a variety of alkynes, the cluster [W3 S4 (acac)3 (py)3 ](+) ([2](+) ) remains unaffected under the same conditions. The reactions of cluster [1](+) show polyphasic kinetics, and in all cases clusters bearing a bridging dithiolene moiety are formed in the first step through the concerted [3+2] cycloaddition between the C≡C atoms of the alkyne and a Mo(μ-S)2 moiety of the cluster. A computational study has been conducted to analyze the effect of the metal on these concerted [3+2] cycloaddition reactions. The calculations suggest that the reactions of cluster [2](+) with alkynes feature ΔG(≠) values only slightly larger than its molybdenum analogue, however, the differences in the reaction free energies between both metal clusters and the same alkyne reach up to approximately 10 kcal mol(-1) , therefore indicating that the differences in the reactivity are essentially thermodynamic. The activation strain model (ASM) has been used to get more insights into the critical effect of the metal center in these cycloadditions, and the results reveal that the change in reactivity is entirely explained on the basis of the differences in the interaction energies Eint between the cluster and the alkyne. Further decomposition of the Eint values through the localized molecular orbital-energy decomposition analysis (LMO-EDA) indicates that substitution of the Mo atoms in cluster [1](+) by W induces changes in the electronic structure of the cluster that result in weaker intra- and inter-fragment orbital interactions.

Abstract
Substitution of the halide ligands in (Bu4N)2[Mo3S7X6] (X = Cl, Br) by diimine ligands, such as 4,4'-dimethyl-2,2'-bipyridine (dmbpy), 2,2'-bipyridine (bpy) and 1,10-phenanthroline (phen), affords the neutral heteroleptic clusters Mo3S7Cl4(dmbpy) (), Mo3S7Br4(dmbpy) (), Mo3S7Br4(bpy) (), and Mo3S7Br4(phen) (). Further substitution of the halide ligands in Mo3S7Br4(diimine) clusters by dmit (1,3-dithiole-2-thione-4,5-dithiolate) allows the preparation of the mixed diimine-dithiolene neutral cluster complexes Mo3S7(dnbpy)(dmit)2 (, dnbpy = 4,4'-dinonyl-2,2'-bipyridine), Mo3S7(dcmbpy)(dmit)2 (, dcmbpy = 4,4'-dimethoxycarbonyl-2,2'-bipyridine), and Mo3S7(dcbpy)(dmit)2 (, dcbpy = 2,2'-bipyridine-4,4'-dicarboxylic acid). The optical limiting properties of complexes have been assessed by the open-aperture Z-scan technique at 570 nm, employing a nanosecond optical parametric oscillator. In order to investigate the effect of increasing the π-system, complexes , with the general formula Mo3S7X4(diimine), (X = Cl, Br), were compared to clusters , containing the dmit ligand. The influence of the metal content on the optical power limiting properties was also investigated by comparing the trinuclear series of complexes prepared herein with the bis(dithiolene) dinuclear cluster (Et4N)2[Mo2O2S2(BPyDTS2)2], which has been recently prepared by our group. All trinuclear clusters are efficient optical limiters (σeff > σ0) with the threshold limiting fluence F15% decreasing on proceeding from dinuclear to trinuclear clusters and, generally, on extending the π-system.

Abstract
Coordination polymer chains have been formed by the direct reaction between HSC6H2Cl2SH and FeCl3·6H2O in the presence of an aqueous solution of the corresponding alkali-metal hydroxide (M = Li, Na, and K) or carbonate (M = Rb and Cs). The structures consist of dimeric [Fe2(SC6H2Cl2S)4](2-) entities bridged by [M2(THF)4] [M = K (1), Rb (2), and Cs (3); THF = tetrahydrofuran] or {[Na2(μ-H2O)2(THF)2] (5 and 5') units. The smaller size of the lithium atom yields an anion/cation ion-pair molecule, [Li(THF)4]2[Fe2(SC6H2Cl2S)4] (4), in which the dianionic moieties are held together by Cl···Cl interactions. Electrical characterization of these compounds shows a general semiconductor behavior in which the conductivity and activation energies are mainly determined by the M-Cl and M-S bond distances. Compounds 1 and 5' are interesting examples of bistability showing reversible transitions centered at ca. 350 and 290 K with very large hysteresis of ca. 60 and 35 K, respectively. All of these compounds exhibit intradimer strong antiferromagnetic Fe···Fe interactions.

Abstract
Two new hybrid molybdenum(IV) Mo3 S7 cluster complexes derivatized with diimino ligands have been prepared by replacement of the two bromine atoms of [Mo3 S7 Br6 ](2-) by a substituted bipyridine ligand to afford heteroleptic molybdenum(IV) Mo3 S7 Br4 (diimino) complexes. Adsorption of the Mo3 S7 cores from sample solutions on TiO2 was only achieved from the diimino functionalized clusters. The adsorbed Mo3 S7 units were reduced on the TiO2 surface to generate an electrocatalyst that reduces the overpotential for the H2 evolution reaction by approximately 0.3 V (for 1 mA cm(-2) ) with a turnover frequency as high as 1.4 s(-1) . The nature of the actual active molybdenum sulfide species has been investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. In agreement with the electrochemical results, the modified TiO2 nanoparticles show a high photocatalytic activity for H2 production in the presence of Na2 S/Na2 SO3 as a sacrificial electron donor system.

Abstract
New triangular Mo(IV) and W(IV) incomplete cuboidal cluster complexes containing three η(2)-diethyldithiophosphates (dtp, one per metal centre) and a η(2)(μ)-AcO or η(2)(μ)-dtp ligand bridging two of these centres have been prepared as mono-substituted derivatives and characterized by the usual techniques plus single crystal X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis in some cases. In the compounds, the single substitutionally available unlocked position is coordinated to different N-donor ligands (1,2-bis(pyridyl)ethylene, pyrimidine, pyrazine) or to the residual solvent. The compounds are very labile and the N-donor ligands are only weakly coordinated, being easily substituted by other donors or coordinating solvents such as acetonitrile. This lability has been explored kinetico-mechanistically by stopped-flow techniques at varying temperatures for the compound [Mo3S4(η(2)-dtp)3(η(2)(μ)-dtp)(H2O)]. By doing so, the nature of the activation process leading to substitution reactions on these complexes has been established as associatively activated and dominated by a very low formation equilibrium constant, that is, by the substitution of the incoming N-donor ligand. Furthermore, the existence of a non-dissociatively activated trigonal 60° fluxional twist has also been established for the η(2)-dtp ligand on the single unlocked position. The lability of the system has also enabled the association in dimers of the acetato derivative, i.e. [Mo3S4(η(2)-dtp)3(η(2)(μ)-AcO)(H2O)], via a pyrazine bridging ligand. After a very careful tuning of the reaction conditions, as established from the kinetico-mechanistic studies, the first single-bridged unsupported dimeric association of {Mo3S4} units, i.e. [{Mo3S4(η(2)-dtp)3(η(2)(μ)-AcO)}2(μ-pyrazine)], has been structurally characterised.

Abstract
Bifunctional dithiolene ligands have been coordinated to the Mo(V)(O)(μ-S2)Mo(V)(O) unit to afford [Mo2O2(μ-S)2(BPyDTS2)2](2-) (1(2-)) (BPyDTS2 (2-bis-(2-pyridyl)methylene-1,3-dithiolene) dianions. Reaction of the 1(2-) molybdenum dimer with pentacarbonylchlorothenium(i) affords a tetrametallic complex of formula [Mo2O2(μ-S)2(BPyDTS2)2{Re(CO)3Cl}2](2-) (2(2-)). The monomeric (CH3)2Sn(BPyDTS2) (3) tin complex has also been prepared for comparative purposes. In the structure of (Et4N)2[1], the two metal atoms are in a square pyramidal coordination environment defined by two bridging sulfur atoms, one terminal oxygen atom and the two sulfur atoms of the bifunctional dithiolene ligand. This arrangement leaves two nitrogen atoms on each side which coordinate to two Re atoms in the 2(2-) tetrametallic complex. Compound 3 has a distorted tetrahedral structure defined by two carbon atoms of the methyl groups and two sulfur atoms of the dithiolene ligand. The luminescence properties of all three complexes in acetonitrile have been investigated. Detailed studies supported on quantum mechanical calculations revealed that complex 1(2-) shows photoluminescence in the 600-800 nm region with a maximum wavelength of 628 nm and an emission quantum yield of 0.092, associated with an intraligand charge transfer (ILCT) transition. Coordination of two Re(CO)3Cl fragments to 1(2-) to afford 2(2-) does not affect the emission spectrum and shape although it decreases the quantum yield, approximately by a factor of 4.6. Compound 3 exhibits a similar emission spectrum to those of the complexes 1(2-) and 2(2-) in good agreement with the ILCT assignment. The quantum yield of 3 lies between that of the 1(2-) and 2(2-) complexes.

Abstract
The crystal structures of 4,5-bis(bromomethyl)-1,3-dithiol-2-one, C(5)H(4)Br(2)OS(2), (I), and 4,5-bis[(dihydroxyphosphoryl)methyl]-1,3-dithiol-2-one, C(5)H(8)O(7)P(2)S(2), (II), occur with similar unit cells in the same monoclinic space group. Both molecules reside on a twofold symmetry axis coincident with the C=O bond, so that the substituents in the 4- and 5-positions project above and below the plane of the 1,3-dithiol-2-one ring. In both structures, the molecules align themselves in a head-to-tail fashion along the b axis, and these rows of molecules then stack, with alternating directionality, along the c axis. For (II), an extensive network of intermolecular hydrogen bonds occurs between molecules within the same stack and between adjacent stacks. Each -CH(2)P(O)(OH)(2) group participates in four hydrogen bonds, twice as donor and twice as acceptor.

The gas phase fragmentation reactions of sulfur-rich [Mo(3)S(7)Br(6)](2-) (1(2-)), [Mo(3)S(7)(bdt)(3)](2-) (2(2-)), and [Mo(3)S(4)(bdt)(3)](2-) (3(2-)) (bdt = benzenedithiolate) complexes have been investigated by electrospray ionization (ESI) tandem mass spectrometry and theoretical calculations at the density functional theory level. Upon collision induced dissociation (CID) conditions, the brominated 1(2-) dianion dissociates through two sequential steps that involves a heterolytic Mo-Br cleavage to give [Mo(3)S(7)Br(5)](-) plus Br(-) followed by a two-electron redox process that affords [Mo(3)S(5)Br(5)](-) and diatomic S(2) sulfur. Dianion [Mo(3)S(7)(bdt)(3)](2-) (2(2-)) dissociates through two sequential redox processes evolving diatomic S(2) sulfur and neutral bdt to yield [Mo(3)S(5)(bdt)(3)](2-) and [Mo(3)S(5)(bdt)(2)](2-), respectively. Conversely, dianion [Mo(3)S(4)(bdt)(3)](2-) (3(2-)), with sulfide instead of disulfide S(2)(2-) bridged ligands, remains intact under identical fragmentation conditions, thus highlighting the importance of disulfide ligands (S(2)(2-)) as electron reservoirs to trigger redox reactions. Regioselective incorporation of (34)S and Se at the equatorial position of the Mo(3)S(7) cluster core in 1(2-) and 2(2-) have been used to identify the product ions along the fragmentation pathways. Reaction mechanisms for the gas-phase dissociation pathways have been elucidated by means of B3LYP calculations, and a comparison with the solution reactivity of Mo(3)S(7) and Mo(3)S(4) clusters as well as closely related Mo/S/dithiolene systems is also discussed.

Abstract
A single component molecular conductor has been isolated from electrocrystallization of the monoanionic gold bis(dithiolene) complex based on the N-ethyl-1,3-thiazoline-2-thione-4,5-dithiolate (Et-thiazdt) ligand. The crystal structure of the system exhibits layers built from parallel uniform one-dimensional stacks of the planar molecule. At room temperature and ambient pressure the system is semiconducting (0.33 S x cm(-1)) with a small activation energy. However, the single crystal conductivity is strongly pressure dependent reaching 1000 S x cm(-1) at 21 kbar. At 13 kbar there is a crossover between semiconducting and metallic regimes. Thus, the present system is the first well characterized single-component molecular metal without TTF dithiolate ligands. First-principles DFT calculations show that the ground state is antiferromagnetic with a very small band gap. A simulation of the effect of pressure on the electronic structure provides a rationale for the observed variations of the conductivity and gives insight on how to further stabilize the metallic state of the system.

Abstract
The redox-active and chelating diphosphine, 3,4-dimethyl-3',4'-bis(diphenylphosphino)-tetrathiafulvalene, denoted as P2, is engaged in a series of platinum complexes, [(P2)Pt(dithiolene)], with different dithiolate ligands, such as 1,2-benzenedithiolate (bdt), 1,3-dithiole-2-thione-4,5-dithiolate (dmit), and 5,6-dihydro-1,4-dithiin-2,3-dithiolate (dddt). The complexes are structurally characterized by X-ray diffraction, together with a model compound derived from bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane, namely, [(dppe)Pt(dddt)]. Four successive reversible electron-transfer processes are found for the [(P2)Pt(dddt)] complex, associated with the two covalently linked but electronically uncoupled electrophores, that is, the TTF core and the platinum dithiolene moiety. The assignments of the different redox processes to either one or the other electrophore is made thanks to the electrochemical properties of the model compound [(dppe)Pt(dddt)] lacking the TTF redox core, and with the help of theoretical calculations (DFT) to understand the nature and energy of the frontier orbitals of the [(P2)Pt(dithiolene)] complexes in their different oxidation states. The first oxidation of the highly electron-rich [(P2)Pt(dddt)] complex can be unambiguously assigned to the redox process affecting the Pt(dddt) moiety rather than the TTF core, a rare example in the coordination chemistry of tetrathiafulvalenes acting as ligands.
