Abstract
Treatment of Fe{N(SiMe3)2}2 with 2 equiv of the appropriate phenol or thiol affords the dimers {Fe(OC6H2-2,6-But2-4-Me)2}2 (1) and {Fe(OC6H3-2,6-But2)2}2 (2) or the monomeric Fe{SC6H3-2,6-(C6H3-2,6-Pri2)2}2 (3) in moderate to excellent yields. Recrystallization of 1 and 2 from diethyl ether gives the corresponding three-coordinate ether complexes Fe(OC6H3-2,6-But2-4-Me)2(OEt2) (4) and Fe(OC6H3-2,6-But2)2(OEt2) (5). In contrast, no diethyl ether complex is formed by the dithiolate 3. The 1H NMR spectra of 4 and 5 show equilibria between the ether complexes and the base-free dimers. A comparison of these spectra with those of the dimeric 1 and 2 allows an unambiguous assignment of the paramagnetically shifted signals. Treatment of 1 with excess ammonia gives the tetrahedral diammine Fe(OC6H2-2,6-But2-4-Me)2(NH3)2 (6). Ammonia is strongly coordinated in 6, with no apparent loss of ammine ligand either in solution or upon heating under low pressure. In contrast, significantly weaker ammonia coordination is observed when dithiolate 3 is treated with excess ammonia, which gives the diammine Fe{SC6H3-2,6-(2,6-Pri2-C6H3)2}2(NH3)2 (7). Complex 7 readily loses ammonia either in solution or under reduced pressure to give the monoammine complex Fe{SC6H3-2,6-(2,6-Pri2-C6H3)2}2(NH3) (8). The weak binding of ammonia by iron thiolate 7 reflects the likely behavior of the proposed iron-sulfur active site in nitrogenases, where release of ammonia is required to close the catalytic cycle.

Abstract
Recent experimental evidence suggests that the FeMoco of nitrogenase undergoes structural rearrangement during N2 reduction, which may result in the generation of coordinatively unsaturated iron sites with two sulfur donors and a carbon donor. In an effort to synthesize and study small-molecule model complexes with a one-carbon/two-sulfur coordination environment, we have designed two new SCS pincer ligands containing a central NHC donor accompanied by thioether- or thiolate-functionalized aryl groups. Metalation of the thioether ligand with Fe(OTf)2 gives 6-coordinate complexes in which the SCS ligand binds meridionally. In contrast, metalation of the thiolate ligand with Fe(HMDS)2 gives a four-coordinate pseudotetrahedral amide complex in which the ligand binds facially, illustrating the potential structural flexibility of these ligands. Reaction of the amide complex with a bulky monothiol gives a four-coordinate complex with a one-carbon/three-sulfur coordination environment that resembles the resting state of nitrogenase. Reaction of the amide complex with phenylhydrazine gives a product with a rare κ1-bound phenylhydrazido group which undergoes N-N cleavage to give a phenylamido complex.

Abstract
Synthetic di- or multimetallic complexes bearing NxHy nitrogenous ligands in a sulfur-rich coordination environment have attracted considerable attention due to their importance in evaluating the complex mechanism of biological nitrogen fixation. Herein, we report a series of thiolate-bridged dicobalt NxHy species obtained by treatment of CoIIICoIII precursor with hydrazine and its substituted derivatives at ambient temperature. Remarkably, when the substituent is the cyclohexyl group, the resulting species can interconvert through different pathways. This Co2S2 skeleton provides a new model system for obtaining valuable information about the early N2Hx-bound intermediate species during the catalytic cycle of nitrogenase.

Abstract
We describe here delivery of hydrazine to a reducing, low oxidation state chromium bound to a proton responsive ligand which has already been deprotonated. Reaction of PhHNNH2 at a 4 : 1 mole ratio with the bis-(pyrazolate)pyridyl pincer ligated reducing agent [CrIIL]2 gives prompt conversion to [CrL2(PhNH2)2(μ-PhHNN)], with release of NH3 and C6H6, a new disproportionation of the hydrazine, with trapping of PhHNN as its dianion, bridging the two chromium centers. The redox balance of the reaction is discussed, and participation by Brønsted basic sites on the bis-(pyrazolate)pyridyl pincer ligand L2- is suggested, but no hydrazine protons remain on the pincer in the product.

Abstract
The synthesis of four new FeII(N4S(thiolate)) complexes as models of the thiol dioxygenases are described. They are composed of derivatives of the neutral, tridentate ligand triazacyclononane (R3TACN; R = Me, iPr) and 2-aminobenzenethiolate (abtx; X = H, CF3), a non-native substrate for thiol dioxygenases. The coordination number of these complexes depends on the identity of the TACN derivative, giving 6-coordinate (6-coord) complexes for FeII(Me3TACN)(abtx)(OTf) (1: X = H; 2: X = CF3) and 5-coordinate (5-coord) complexes for [FeII(iPr3TACN)(abtx)](OTf) (3: X = H; 4: X = CF3). Complexes 1-4 were examined by UV-vis, 1H/19F NMR, and Mössbauer spectroscopies, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations were employed to support the data. Mössbauer spectroscopy reveals that the 6-coord 1-2 and 5-coord 3- 4 exhibit distinct spectra, and these data are compared with that for cysteine-bound CDO, helping to clarify the coordination environment of the cys-bound FeII active site. Reaction of 1 or 2 with O2 at -95 °C leads to S-oxygenation of the abt ligand, and in the case of 2, a rare di(sulfinato)-bridged complex, [Fe2III(μ-O)((2-NH2) p-CF3C6H3SO2)2](OTf)2 ( 5), was obtained. Parallel enzymatic studies on the CDO variant C93G were carried out with the abt substrate and show that reaction with O2 leads to disulfide formation, as opposed to S-oxygenation. The combined model and enzyme studies show that the thiol dioxygenases can operate via a 6-coord FeII center, in contrast to the accepted mechanism for nonheme iron dioxygenases, and that proper substrate chelation to Fe appears to be critical for S-oxygenation.

Abstract
A series of alkali metal cerium diphenylhydrazido complexes, M x (py) y [Ce(PhNNPh)4], M = Li, Na, and K, x = 4 (Li and Na) or 5 (K), and y = 4 (Li), 8 (Na), or 7 (K), were synthesized to probe how a secondary coordination sphere would modulate electronic structures at a cerium cation. The resulting electronic structures of the heterobimetallic cerium diphenylhydrazido complexes were found to be strongly dependent on the identity of the alkali metal cations. When M = Li+ or Na+, the cerium(iii) starting material was oxidized with concomitant reduction of 1,2-diphenylhydrazine to aniline. Reduction of 1,2-diphenylhydrazine was not observed when M = K+, and the complex remained in the cerium(iii) oxidation state. Oxidation of the cerium(iii) diphenylhydrazido complex to the Ce(iv) diphenylhydrazido one was achieved through a simple cation exchange reaction of the alkali metals. UV-Vis spectroscopy, FTIR spectroscopy, electrochemistry, magnetic susceptibility, and DFT studies were used to probe the oxidation state and the electronic changes that occurred at the metal centre.

Abstract
A sulfide-bridged diiron(II) complex bearing a cis-N2H4 (hydrazine) ligand has been prepared by reaction of LFeII(μ-S)FeIIL (1; L = sterically encumbered βdiketiminate ligand) with 2 molar equivalents of N2H4. The metastable diiron(II) hydrazine complex LFeII(μ-S)(μH N-NH2)FeII (3) is formed, as shown by crystallography, and NMR, vibrational, and electronic absorption spectroscopies. Compound 3 has been crystallographically characterized as its DBU (1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7$ene) adduct, which exhibits weak N-H···DBU hydrogen bonding. The synthetic process evolves roughly 2 equivalents of NH3. The cis-N2H4 bridge in 3 may be relevant to the structure and function of intermediates on the FeMoco of nitrogenase.

Abstract
Treatment of trans-[MHCl(dmpe)(2)] (M = Fe, Ru) with hydrazine afforded the hydrido hydrazine complexes cis- and trans-[MH(N(2)H(4))(dmpe)(2)](+) which have been characterized by NMR spectroscopy ((1)H, (31)P, and (15)N). Both cis and trans isomers of the Fe complex and the trans isomer of the Ru complex were characterized by X-ray crystallography. Reactions with acid and base afforded a range of N(2)H(x) complexes, including several unstable hydrido hydrazido complexes.
