Abstract
The copolymerization of CO2 and epoxides presents a transformative approach to converting greenhouse gases into aliphatic polycarbonates (CO2-PCs), thereby reducing the polymer industry's dependence on fossil resources. Over the past 50 years, a wide array of metallic catalysts, both heterogeneous and homogeneous, have been developed to achieve precise control over polymer selectivity, sequence, regio-, and stereoselectivity. This review details the evolution of metal-based catalysts, with a particular focus on the emergence of organoborane catalysts, and explores how these catalysts effectively address kinetic and thermodynamic challenges in CO2/epoxides copoly2merization. Advances in the synthesis of CO2-PCs with varied sequence and chain architectures through diverse polymerization protocols are examined, alongside the applications of functional CO2-PCs produced by incorporating different epoxides. The review also underscores the contributions of computational techniques to our understanding of copolymerization mechanisms and highlights recent advances in the closed-loop chemical recycling of CO2-sourced polycarbonates. Finally, the industrialization efforts of CO2-PCs are discussed, offering readers a comprehensive understanding of the evolution and future potential of epoxide copolymerization with CO2.

Abstract
Salen, Salan, and Salalen chromium (III) chloride complexes have been investigated as catalysts for the ring-opening copolymerization reactions of cyclohexene oxide (CHO) with CO2 and of phthalic anhydride (PA) with limonene oxide (LO) or cyclohexene oxide (CHO). In the production of polycarbonates, the more flexible skeleton of salalen and salan ancillary ligands favors high activity. Differently, in the copolymerization of phthalic anhydride with the epoxides, the salen complex showed the best performance. Diblock polycarbonate-polyester copolymers were selectively obtained by one-pot procedures from mixtures of CO2, cyclohexene oxide, and phthalic anhydride with all complexes. In addition, all chromium complexes were revealed to be very active in the chemical depolymerization of polycyclohexene carbonate producing cyclohexene oxide with high selectivity, thus offering the opportunity to close the loop on the life of these materials.

Abstract
In this work, four new mononuclear Cr(III) complexes (2-5) bearing bis-thioether-diphenolate, [OSSO]-type ligands, were synthesized and characterized. These complexes in combination with bis(triphenylphosphine)iminium chloride (PPNCl) promoted the coupling of CO2 with epoxides. Depending on the type of substrate and the conditions, the reaction results in the selective formation of either polycarbonate or cyclic carbonate. For example, the reactions in the presence of complex 2 led to the exclusive formation of poly(cyclohexene carbonate, PCHC) from cyclohexene oxide (CHO) (TOF up to 39 h-1 , at T=45-100 °C, time=24 h, pCO2 =20 bar, epoxide/2 (mol/mol)=1000, and PPNCl/2=0.5-2.0 mol %). Under the same conditions and PPNCl/2=0.5-5.0 mol %, the reactions of CO2 with styrene oxide (SO), epichlorohydrin (ECH), 1,2 epoxydodecane (EDD), and allyl glycidyl ether (AGE) have shown selective conversion to the corresponding cyclic carbonates (TOF up to 41 h-1 ).

Abstract
The catalysed ring opening copolymerizations (ROCOP) of carbon dioxide/epoxide or anhydride/epoxide are controlled polymerizations that access useful polycarbonates and polyesters. Here, a systematic investigation of a series of heterodinuclear Mg(II)M(II) complexes reveals which metal combinations are most effective. The complexes combine different first row transition metals (M(II)) from Cr(II) to Zn(II), with Mg(II); all complexes are coordinated by the same macrocyclic ancillary ligand and by two acetate co-ligands. The complex syntheses and characterization data, as well as the polymerization data, for both carbon dioxide/cyclohexene oxide (CHO) and endo-norbornene anhydride (NA)/cyclohexene oxide, are reported. The fastest catalyst for both polymerizations is Mg(II)Co(II) which shows propagation rate constants (kp ) of 34.7 mM-1 s-1 (CO2 ) and 75.3 mM-1 s-1 (NA) (100 °C). The Mg(II)Fe(II) catalyst also shows excellent performances with equivalent rates for CO2 /CHO ROCOP (kp =34.7 mM-1 s-1 ) and may be preferable in terms of metallic abundance, low cost and low toxicity. Polymerization kinetics analyses reveal that the two lead catalysts show overall second order rate laws, with zeroth order dependencies in CO2 or anhydride concentrations and first order dependencies in both catalyst and epoxide concentrations. Compared to the homodinuclear Mg(II)Mg(II) complex, nearly all the transition metal heterodinuclear complexes show synergic rate enhancements whilst maintaining high selectivity and polymerization control. These findings are relevant to the future design and optimization of copolymerization catalysts and should stimulate broader investigations of synergic heterodinuclear main group/transition metal catalysts.

Abstract
Chromium diamino-bis(phenolate) complexes, CrXL [where L = 6,6'-((1,4-diazepane-1,4-diyl)bis(methylene))bis(2,4-dimethylphenolato) and X = Cl- (1), OH- (2), and N3- (3)], were prepared and characterized by MALDI-TOF MS and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Complex 1 crystallized as two linkage isomers, specifically a green chloride-bridged dimer (1) and a pink asymmetrically bridged isomer exhibiting one chloride bridging atom and one bridging phenolate oxygen (1'). Adventitious moisture during sample handling causes the formation of hydroxide-containing complex 2. The reaction of 1 with PPNN3 (where PPN = bis(triphenylphosphine)iminium) permits the isolation of a crystalline chromium azide complex, 3, which was structurally authenticated. Complex 1 showed good activity toward the ring-opening copolymerization of cyclohexene oxide and carbon dioxide with an added chloride, azide, or 4-(dimethylamino)pyridine (DMAP) cocatalyst to give a completely alternating polycarbonate with a narrow molecular weight dispersity.

Abstract
Metal complexes have extensive applications in catalysis, however, the efficient evaluation of Lewis acidity of metal complexes is still a challenge. Herein, we report a method by using electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) to evaluate the Lewis acidity of metal complexes in the presence of a reference Lewis base, in which the value of the Lewis acidity can be quantized by the bond dissociation energy (BDE) of the resultant Lewis acid-base pairs. Using this method, the Lewis acidity of tetradentate Schiff-base metal complexes (designated as salenMX), a class of common metal complexes in the homogeneous catalysis, was studied in detail. For the salenM(III)X complexes (M = Al, Cr, Fe, Co), the Lewis acidity tendency is Al > Cr > Fe > Co due to a strong affinity between the Al complex and the reference Lewis base while a weak affinity concerning on the Co complex. Additionally, the effect of ligand steric and electronic nature on the Lewis acidity was studied by using Co complex. Furthermore, density functional theory (DFT) was employed to calculate the BDE, which consists with the results obtained from ESI-MS. The ESI-MS method provides a convenient and efficient method for evaluating the Lewis acidity of metal complexes.

Abstract
Initial catalyst dormancy has been mitigated for the enantioselective polymerization of propylene oxide using a tethered bimetallic chromium(III) salen complex. A detailed mechanistic study provided insight into the species responsible for this induction period and guided efforts to remove them. High-resolution electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry and density functional theory computations revealed that a μ-hydroxide and a bridged 1,2-hydroxypropanolate complex are present during the induction period. Kinetic studies and additional computation indicated that the μ-hydroxide complex is a short-lived catalyst arrest state, where hydroxide dissociation from one metal allows for epoxide enchainment to form the 1,2-hydroxypropanolate arrest state. While investigating anion dependence on the induction period, it became apparent that catalyst activation was the main contributor for dormancy. Using a 1,2-diol or water as chain transfer agents (CTAs) led to longer induction periods as a result of increased 1,2-hydroxyalkanolate complex formation. With a minor catalyst modification, rigorous drying conditions, and avoiding 1,2-diols as CTAs, the induction period was essentially removed.

Abstract
Chromium(III) chlorido amine-bis(phenolate) complexes paired with nucleophilic co-catalysts are a promising family of catalysts for the copolymerization of CO2 and epoxides to selectively produce polycarbonates with a very high degree of carbonate linkages. Single-component catalyst systems can be prepared, where the neutral nucleophile, 4-dimethylaminopyridine (DMAP), is coordinated to the metal site to provide a stable octahedral CrIII complex. These complexes possess the potential for both anionic (from the chlorido ligand) or neutral (DMAP) nucleophilic epoxide ring-opening during the proposed rate-determining initiation step. Concentration effect studies support a first-order dependence of the polymerization rate on the concentration of single-component catalyst. End-group analysis of polycarbonates by MALDI-TOF MS indicate the presence of predominantly DMAP-initiated chains as well as the occurrence of chain-transfer events resulting in ether linkages, likely from the presence of cyclohexene diol formed by the reaction of cyclohexene oxide and adventitious water.

A MALDI-TOF MS analysis study of the binding of 4-(N,N-dimethylamino)pyridine to amine-bis(phenolate) chromium(iii) chloride complexes: mechanistic insight into differences in catalytic activity for CO2/epoxide copolymerization. Abstract
Amine-bis(phenolato)chromium(iii) chloride complexes, [LCrCl], are capable of catalyzing the copolymerization of cyclohexene oxide with carbon dioxide to give poly(cyclohexane) carbonate. When combined with 4-(N,N-dimethylamino)pyridine (DMAP) these catalyst systems yield low molecular weight polymers with moderately narrow polydispersities. The coordination chemistry of DMAP with five amine-bis(phenolato)chromium(iii) chloride complexes was studied by matrix assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS). The amine-bis(phenolato) ligands were varied in the nature of their neutral pendant donor-group and include oxygen-containing tetrahydrofurfuryl and methoxyethyl moieties, or nitrogen-containing N,N-dimethylaminoethyl or 2-pyridyl moieties. The relative abundance of mono and bis(DMAP) adducts, as well as DMAP-free ions is compared under various DMAP : Cr complex ratios. The [LCr]+ cations show the ability to bind two DMAP molecules to form six-coordinate complex ions in all cases, except when the pendant group is N,N-dimethylaminoethyl (compound 3). Even in the presence of a 4 : 1 ratio of DMAP to Cr, no ions corresponding to [L3Cr(DMAP)2]+ were observed for the complex containing the tertiary sp3-hybridized amino donor in the pendant arm. The difference in DMAP-binding ability of these compounds results in differences in catalytic activity for alternating copolymerization of CO2 and cyclohexene oxide. Kinetic investigations by infrared spectroscopy of compounds 2 and 3 show that polycarbonate formation by 3 is twice as fast as that of compound 2 and that no initiation time is observed.

Abstract
Cobalt(III) tetraphenylporphyrin chloride (TPPCoCl) was experimentally proved to be an active catalyst for poly(propylene carbonate) production. It was chosen as a model catalyst in the present work to investigate the initiation step of propylene oxide (PO)/CO2 copolymerization, which is supposed to be the ring opening of the epoxide. Ring-opening intermediates (1-7) were detected by using (1) H NMR spectroscopy. A first-order reaction in TPPCoCl was determined. A combination of monometallic and bimetallic ring-opening pathways is proposed according to kinetics experiments. Addition of onium salts (e.g., bis(triphenylphosphine)iminium chloride, PPNCl) efficiently promoted the PO ring-opening rate. The existence of axial ligand exchange in the cobalt porphyrin complex in the presence of onium salts was suggested by analyzing collected (1) H NMR spectra.

Abstract
A series of CoIII carboxylate based upon N,N,O,O-tetradentate Schiff base ligand framework have been prepared. X-ray diffraction analysis confirms that these Schiff base CoIII carboxylate are all monomeric species with a six-coordinated central Co in their solid structures. The activities and polycarbonate selectivity of these complexes toward the copolymerization of epoxide (cyclohexene oxide and propylene oxide) and carbon dioxide have been investigated in the presence of bis(triphenylphosphine)iminium chloride. Copolymerization experiments indicate that [bis(α-methyl-3,5-di-tertbutyl-salicylaldehyde) ethylenediiminato] CoIIIOOCH3 exhibits the highest activity and polycarbonate selectivity among these CoIII carboxylate. The resultant copolymer contained almost 100 % carbonate linkages with the molecular weight up to 71.8 kg mol−1 as well as narrow polymer dispersity index (polymer dispersity index = 1.5). The substituents and the mode of the bridging part between the two nitrogen atoms both exert significant influences upon the progress of the copolymerizations, influencing both the polycarbonate selectivity and the rate of copolymerization.
