Formation and Reactivity of [(tacn)-N-CO-ReIIIBr(CO)2]+ in Water: a Theoretical and Experimental Study

Efficient Direct Nitrosylation of α-Diimine Rhenium Tricarbonyl Complexes to Structurally Nearly Identical Higher Charge Congeners Activable towards Photo-CO Release

The reaction of rhenium α-diimine (N-N) tricarbonyl complexes with nitrosonium tetrafluoroborate yields the corresponding dicarbonyl-nitrosyl [Re(CO)2(NO)(N-N)X]+ species (where X = halide). The complexes, accessible in a single step in good yield, are structurally nearly identical higher charge congeners of the tricarbonyl molecules. Substitution chemistry aimed at the realization of equivalent dicationic species (intended for applications as potential antimicrobial agents), revealed that the reactivity of metal ion in [Re(CO)2(NO)(N-N)X]+ is that of a hard Re acid, probably due to the stronger π-acceptor properties of NO+ as compared to those of CO. The metal ion thus shows great affinity for π-basic ligands, which are consequently difficult to replace by, e.g., σ-donor or weak π-acids like pyridine. Attempts of direct nitrosylation of α-diimine fac-[Re(CO)3]+ complexes bearing π-basic OR-type ligands gave the [Re(CO)2(NO)(N-N)(BF4)][BF4] salt as the only product in good yield, featuring a stable Re-FBF3 bond. The solid state crystal structure of nearly all molecules presented could be elucidated. A fundamental consequence of the chemistry of [Re(CO)2(NO)(N-N)X]+ complexes, it that the same can be photo-activated towards CO release and represent an entirely new class of photoCORMs.

In Situ Synthesis and Applications for Polyinterhalides Based on BrCl

The use of neat BrCl in organic and inorganic chemistry is limited due to its gaseous aggregate state and especially its decomposition into Cl2 and Br2 . The stabilization of BrCl in form of reactive ionic liquids via a novel in situ synthesis route shifts this equilibrium drastically to the BrCl side, which leads to safer and easier-to-handle interhalogenation reagents. Furthermore, the crystalline derivatives of the hitherto unknown [Cl(BrCl)2 ]- and [Cl(BrCl)4 ]- anions were synthesized and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman and IR spectroscopy, as well as quantum chemical calculations.

Synthesis and Characterization of Nonclassical Interhalides Based on Bromine Monochloride

Due to a more distinct σ-hole, BrCl is able to form stronger halogen bonds than those in polyhalogen anions based on Cl₂ and Br₂ . This stabilization allows the crystallographic characterization of a variety of new polyinterhalides, in which chloride functions as the central ion as shown by the molecular structures of [AsPh₄ ][Cl(BrCl)₃ ] and [CCl(NMe₂ )₂ ][Cl(BrCl)₅ ]. Furthermore, the solid-state structure of an octahedrally coordinated nonclassical interhalide is reported for the first time. The tridecainterhalide monoanion [Cl(BrCl)₆ ]^- consists of a central chloride ion, which is coordinated by six BrCl molecules in a slightly distorted octahedral structure. All new compounds were characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction (XRD), NMR and Raman spectroscopy, as well as quantum-chemical calculations.

Distortion Pathways of Transition Metal Coordination Polyhedra Induced by Chelating Topology

A continuous shape measures analysis of the coordination polyhedra of a host of transition metal complexes with bi- and multidentate ligands discloses the distortion pathway associated with each particular topology of the chelate rings formed. The basic parameter that controls the degree of distortion is the metal-donor atom bond distance that induces nonideal bond angles due to the rigidity of the ligands. Thus, the degree of distortion within each family of complexes depends on the atomic size, on which the high- or low-spin state has a large effect. Special attention is therefore paid to several spin-crossover systems and to the enhanced distortions that go along with the transition from low- to high-spin state affected by temperature, light, or pressure. Several families of complexes show deviations from the expected distortion pathways in the high-spin state that can be associated to the onset of intermolecular interactions such as secondary coordination of counterions or solvent molecules. Also, significant displacement of counterions in an extended solid may result from the changes in metal-ligand bond distances when ligands are involved in intermolecular hydrogen bonding.

A new class of highly solvatochromic dicyano rhenate(I) diimine complexes--synthesis, photophysics and photocatalysis

A new class of dicarbonyl dicyano rhenate(I) diimine complexes, cis,trans-[Re(CO)(2)(CN)(2)(N-N)](-), with highly environmentally sensitive MLCT absorption and emission properties was synthesised and characterised. Preliminary experiments revealed that these complexes are active photocatalysts for CO(2) reduction.

Tuning the reactivity in classic low-spin d6 rhenium(I) tricarbonyl radiopharmaceutical synthon by selective bidentate ligand variation (L,L'-Bid; L,L'= N,N', N,O, and O,O' donor atom sets) in fac-[Re(CO)3(L,L'-Bid)(MeOH)]n complexes

A range of fac-[Re(CO)(3)(L,L'-Bid)(H(2)O)](n) (L,L'-Bid = neutral or monoanionic bidentate ligands with varied L,L' donor atoms, N,N', N,O, or O,O': 1,10-phenanthroline, 2,2'-bipydine, 2-picolinate, 2-quinolinate, 2,4-dipicolinate, 2,4-diquinolinate, tribromotropolonate, and hydroxyflavonate; n = 0, +1) has been synthesized and the aqua/methanol substitution has been investigated. The complexes were characterized by UV-vis, IR and NMR spectroscopy and X-ray crystallographic studies of the compounds fac-[Re(CO)(3)(Phen)(H(2)O)]NO(3)·0.5Phen, fac-[Re(CO)(3)(2,4-dQuinH)(H(2)O)]·H(2)O, fac-[Re(CO)(3)(2,4-dQuinH)Py]Py, and fac-[Re(CO)(3)(Flav)(CH(3)OH)]·CH(3)OH are reported. A four order-of-magnitude of activation for the methanol substitution is induced as manifested by the second order rate constants with (N,N'-Bid) < (N,O-Bid) < (O,O'-Bid). Forward and reverse rate and stability constants from slow and stopped-flow UV/vis measurements (k(1), M(-1) s(-1); k(-1), s(-1); K(1), M(-1)) for bromide anions as entering nucleophile are as follows: fac-[Re(CO)(3)(Phen)(MeOH)](+) (50 ± 3) × 10(-3), (5.9 ± 0.3) × 10(-4), 84 ± 7; fac-[Re(CO)(3)(2,4-dPicoH)(MeOH)] (15.7 ± 0.2) × 10(-3), (6.3 ± 0.8) × 10(-4), 25 ± 3; fac-[Re(CO)(3)(TropBr(3))(MeOH)] (7.06 ± 0.04) × 10(-2), (4 ± 1) × 10(-3), 18 ± 4; fac-[Re(CO)(3)(Flav)(MeOH)] 7.2 ± 0.3, 3.17 ± 0.09, 2.5 ± 2. Activation parameters (ΔH(k1)(++), kJmol(-1); ΔS(k1)(), J K(-1) mol(-1)) from Eyring plots for entering nucleophiles as indicated are as follows: fac-[Re(CO)(3)(Phen)(MeOH)](+) iodide 70 ± 1, -35 ± 3; fac-[Re(CO)(3)(2,4-dPico)(MeOH)] bromide 80.8 ± 6, -8 ± 2; fac-[Re(CO)(3)(Flav)(MeOH)] bromide 52 ± 5, -52 ± 15. A dissociative interchange mechanism is proposed.
