Abstract
The synthesis, thermolysis, and surface organometallic chemistry of thermolytic molecular precursors based on a new germanosilicate ligand platform, -OGe[OSi(OtBu)3]3, is described. Use of this ligand is demonstrated with preparation of complexes containing the first-row transition metals Cr, Mn, and Fe. The thermolysis and grafting behavior of the synthesized complexes, Fe{OGe[OSi(OtBu)3]3}2 (FeGe), Mn{OGe[OSi(OtBu)3]3}2(THF)2 (MnGe) and Cr{OGe[OSi(OtBu)3]3}2(THF)2 (CrGe), was evaluated using a combination of thermogravimetric analysis; nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis), and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopies; and single-crystal X-ray diffraction (XRD). Grafting of the precursors onto SBA-15 mesoporous silica and subsequent calcination in air led to substantial changes in transition metal coordination environments and oxidation states, the implications of which are discussed in the context of low-coordinate and low oxidation state thermolytic molecular precursors.

Abstract
Diamidobenzene ligands are a prominent class of redox-active ligands owing to their electron reservoir behaviour, as well as the possibility of tuning the steric and the electronic properties of such ligands through the substituents on the N-atoms of the ligands. In this contribution, we present Rh(iii) complexes with four differently substituted diamidobenzene ligands. By using a combination of crystallography, NMR spectroscopy, electrochemistry, UV-vis-NIR/EPR spectroelectrochemistry, and quantum chemical calculations we show that the substituents on the ligands have a profound influence on the bonding, donor, electrochemical and spectroscopic properties of the Rh complexes. We present, for the first time, design strategies for the isolation of mononuclear Rh(ii) metallates whose redox potentials span across more than 850 mV. These Rh(ii) metallates undergo typical metalloradical reactivity such as activation of O2 and C–Cl bond activations. Additionally, we also show that the substituents on the ligands dictate the one versus two electron nature of the oxidation steps of the Rh complexes. Furthermore, the oxidative reactivity of the metal complexes with a [CH3]+ source leads to the isolation of a unprecedented, homobimetallic, heterovalent complex featuring a novel π-bonded rhodio-o-diiminoquionone. Our results thus reveal several new potentials of the diamidobenzene ligand class in organometallic reactivity and small molecule activation with potential relevance for catalysis. Diamidobenzene ligands are versatile platforms in organometallic Rh-chemistry. They allow the isolation of tunable mononuclear ate-complexes, and the formation of a unprecedented homobimetallic, heterovalent complex.![]()

Abstract
The exploration of low-cost and efficient electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is a prerequisite for large-scale hydrogen fuel generation. The understanding of the electronic properties of electrocatalysts plays a key role in this exploration process. In this study, our first-principles results demonstrate that the catalytic performance of the 1D metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) can be significantly influenced by engineering the composite of the metal node. Using the Gibbs free energy of the adsorption of hydrogen atoms as a key descriptor, we found that Ni- and Cr-based dithiolene MOFs possess better hydrogen evolution performance, and the much different efficiencies can be ascribed to their electronic resonance structures [TM3+(L2-)(L2-)]- ↔ [TM2+(L•-)(L2-)]-. The [TM2+(L•-)(L2-)]- structure is preferred due to the higher activity of the catalytic site L with more radical features, and the stabilized [TM2+(L•-)(L2-)]- structure of the Cr- and Ni-based MOFs can be ascribed to the electronic configurations of their TM2+ cations with half-occupied and fully occupied valence orbitals. Our results therefore reveal a novel strategy for optimizing the electronic structures of materials on the basis of the resonant charge-transfer mechanism for their practical applications.

Abstract
Unique tripodal S-donor capping agents with an attached carboxylate are found to bind tightly to the surface of CdSe nanocrystals (NCs), making the latter water soluble. Unlike that in similarly solubilized CdSe NCs with one-sulfur or two-sulfur capping agents, dissociation from the NC surface is greatly reduced. The impact of this behavior is seen in the photochemical generation of H2 in which the CdSe NCs function as the light absorber with metal complexes in aqueous solution as the H2-forming catalyst and ascorbic acid as the electron donor source. This precious-metal-free system for H2 generation from water using [Co(bdt)2](-) (bdt, benzene-1,2-dithiolate) as the catalyst exhibits excellent activity with a quantum yield for H2 formation of 24% at 520 nm light and durability with >300,000 turnovers relative to catalyst in 60 h.

The generation of H2 from protons and electrons by complexes of cobalt has an extensive history. During the past decade, interest in this subject has increased as a result of developments in hydrogen generation that are driven electrochemically or photochemically. This article reviews the subject of hydrogen generation using Co complexes as catalysts and discusses the mechanistic implications of the systems studied for making H2. This article is part of a Special Issue entitled: Metals in Bioenergetics and Biomimetics Systems.

Abstract
We present a theoretical study to explore the spin transport properties of FeN(4) complexes sandwiched between two armchair (5, 5) carbon nanotube (CNT) electrodes. The ab initio modeling is performed by combining the spin-dependent density functional theory with nonequilibrium Green's function formalism. The calculated results clearly demonstrate that the transport properties of FeN(4) complexes are sensitive to the contact configuration. Near the Fermi level the conductance through three examined junctions is mainly governed by the spin-up electrons. The FeN(4) complex coupled to CNT electrodes with the π-type contact conjugation can act as a nearly perfect spin filter, and its spin filter efficiency is up to 98.0%. Our theoretical results demonstrate that FeN(4) complexes are promising for future molecular spintronics devices.

Abstract
Artificial photosynthesis (AP) is a promising method of converting solar energy into fuel (H(2)). Harnessing solar energy to generate H(2) from H(+) is a crucial process in systems for artificial photosynthesis. Widespread application of a device for AP would rely on the use of platinum-free catalysts due to the scarcity of noble metals. Here we report a series of cobalt dithiolene complexes that are exceptionally active for the catalytic reduction of protons in aqueous solvent mixtures. All catalysts perform visible-light-driven reduction of protons from water when paired with Ru(bpy)(3)(2+) as the photosensitizer and ascorbic acid as the sacrificial donor. Photocatalysts with electron withdrawing groups exhibit the highest activity with turnovers up to 9,000 with respect to catalyst. The same complexes are also active electrocatalysts in 11 acetonitrile/water. The electrocatalytic mechanism is proposed to be ECEC, where the Co dithiolene catalysts undergo rapid protonation once they are reduced to CoL(2)(2-). Subsequent reduction and reaction with H(+) lead to H(2) formation. Cobalt dithiolene complexes thus represent a new group of active catalysts for the reduction of protons.

Abstract
The electronic structures of two uranium compounds supported by redox-active α-diimine ligands, ((Mes)DAB(Me))(2)U(THF) (1) and Cp(2)U((Mes)DAB(Me)) (2) ((Mes)DAB(Me) = [ArN═C(Me)C(Me)═NAr]; Ar = 2,4,6-trimethylphenyl (Mes)), have been investigated using both density functional theory and multiconfigurational self-consistent field methods. Results from these studies have established that both uranium centers are tetravalent, that the ligands are reduced by two electrons, and that the ground states of these molecules are triplets. Energetically low-lying singlet states are accessible, and some transitions to these states are visible in the electronic absorption spectrum.
