Abstract
Employing a new nitronyl nitroxide biradical NITPhPzbis(NITPhPzbis = 5-(1-pyrazolyl)-1,3-bis(1’-oxyl-3’-oxido-4’,4’,5’,5’-tetramethyl-4,5-hydro-1H-imidazol-2-yl)benzene), a series of 2p-4f complexes [Ln2(hfac)6(H2O)(NITPhPzbis)] (LnIII = Gd1, Tb2, Dy3; hfac = hexafluoroacetylacetonate) were successfully synthesized. In complexes 1–3, the designed biradical NITPhPzbis coordinates with two LnIII ions in chelating and bridging modes to form a four-spin binuclear structure. Direct-current magnetic study of Gd analogue indicates that ferromagnetic exchange exists between the Gd ion and the radical while antiferromagnetic coupling dominates between two mono-radicals. Dynamic magnetic data show that the χ” signals of complex 3 exhibit frequency dependence under zero field, demonstrating slow magnetic relaxation behavior in complex 3. And the estimated values of Ueff and τ0 are about 8.4 K and 9.1 × 10−8 s, respectively.

Abstract
Utilizing a novel nitronyl nitroxide biradical bisNITPhPyrim involving a pyrimidine group ([5-(5-pyrimidyl)-1,3-bis(1'-oxyl-3'-oxido-4',4',5',5'-tetramethyl-4,5-hydro-1H-imidazol-2-yl)]benzene), three heterometallic Ln-Cu complexes with formulas [Ln(hfac)3Cu(hfac)2(bisNITPhPyrim)] (LnIII = Gd 1, Tb 2, and Dy 3; hfac = hexafluoroacetylacetonate) have been achieved. In these complexes, the CuII ions are linked by N atoms of pyrimidine rings of bisNITPhPyrim radicals to form a one-dimensional chain structure, whereas each LnIII ion is chelated with two neighboring NO groups of two NIT moieties of the radical. Magnetic studies reveal the presence of ferromagnetic interactions between the GdIII ion and coordinated NO groups, and between the pyrimidine-bridged copper(ii) spins, which are quantified by a magnetic model, giving J1 = 4.20 cm-1 and J3 = 0.50 cm-1 (J1 and J3 are magnetic exchanges for GdIII-ON and CuII-CuII, respectively). Interestingly, ac magnetic measurements show that complex 3 exhibits slow relaxation of the magnetization.

Abstract
Four 2p-4f LnIII-radical complexes, [(NIT-2-Pm)Ln(hfac)3]·0.5C7H16 (NIT-2-Pm = 2-pyrimidyl-4,4,5,5-tetramethyl-4,5-dihydro-1H-imidazol-1-oxy-3-oxide, hfac = hexafluoroacetylacetonato, Ln = Tb (1), Dy (2), Ho (3) and Er (4)), and four 4f-2p-4f LnIII-radical-LnIII complexes, [(μ-NIT-2-Pm)Ln2(hfac)6(H2O)2]·0.5C7H16 (Ln = Tb (5), Dy (6), Ho (7) and Er (8)) have been synthesized and characterized structurally and magnetically. These compounds can be selectively obtained by controlling the reaction ratio of Ln(hfac)3·2H2O to the radical ligand NIT-2-Pm. The crystal structures show that in the former four complexes 1-4, the NIT-2-Pm radical acts as a terminal bidentate ligand chelating to one LnIII ion, while in 5-8, the NIT-2-Pm acts as a bridging ligand linking two LnIII ions to form a binuclear three-spin system. Magnetic studies revealed that complexes 1-4 and 6 show frequency-dependent ac magnetic susceptibilities, suggesting a possible single-molecule magnet behavior. To the best of our knowledge, complexes 3 and 4 are the first Ho-NIT and Er-NIT compounds showing slow magnetic relaxation. Compounds 5-8 represent a rare family of compounds showing the NIT bridged 4f-2p-4f three-spin motif, while complex 6 is a rare NIT bridged multinuclear lanthanide compound possessing SMM-like behaviour. Ab initio calculations were performed on all these complexes. The fitting of the magnetic susceptibilities of these compounds suggests weak antiferromagnetic coupling between the LnIII and NIT radical in 1-8 and weak ferromagnetic LnIII-LnIII interactions in 5-8.

Abstract
A novel two-dimensional dysprosium(III) complex, [Dy(L)(CH3COO)]·0.5DMF·H2O·2CH3OH (1), has been successfully synthesized from a new pyridine-N-oxide (PNO)-containing ligand, namely, N'-(2-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzylidene)pyridine-N-oxidecarbohydrazide (H2L). Single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies reveal that complex 1 is composed of a dinuclear dysprosium subunit, which is further extended by the PNO part of the ligand to form a two-dimensional layer. Magnetic studies indicate that complex 1 shows well-defined temperature- and frequency-dependent signals under a zero direct-current (dc) field, typical of slow magnetic relaxation with an effective energy barrier Ueff of 33.6 K under a zero dc field. Interestingly, powder X-ray diffraction and thermogravimetric analysis reveal that compound 1 undergoes a reversible phase transition that is induced by the desorption and absorption of methanol and water molecules. Moreover, the desolvated sample [Dy(L)(CH3COO)]·0.5DMF (1a) also exhibits slow magnetic relaxation but with a higher anisotropic barrier of 42.0 K, indicating the tuning effect of solvent molecules on slow magnetic relaxation.

Abstract
Four coordination compounds of formulae [Cu(II)2(H2L(1))(HL(1))](ClO4)3·H2O (1), [Cu(II)2(H2L(2))(CH3OH)2](ClO4)2·2CH3OH (2), [Co(II)2(H2L(1))2](ClO4)4 (3) and [Co(II)2(H2L(2))2]·2H2O (4) were synthesized via self-assembly of succinohydrazone derived ligands (H2L(1) = N',N'-4-bis(2-pyridyl)succinohydrazide, H4L(2) = N',N'-4-bis(2-hydroxybenzylidene)succinohydrazide) and Cu(2+) and Co(2+) ions, respectively. The compounds were characterized by crystal structure determination, magnetic measurements and biological activities. Compounds 1, 3 and 4 have discrete double helicate structures, whereas compound 2 is a one-dimensional chain. Magnetic studies show antiferromagnetic exchange interactions in 2 with a J value of -67.1 cm(-1) and antiferromagnetic spin-canting in compound 3 originates through supramolecular H-bonding. For compound 3, a clear bifurcation was observed in zero field cooled (ZFC) and field cooled (FC) measurement at a temperature of 3.5 K and field of 0.1 T, implying long range magnetic ordering below this temperature. Interestingly, all of compounds 1-4 show significant changes in their absorption (hypo- and hyperchromism) in the presence of SS-DNA, inferring interaction between the compounds and DNA. In addition, compounds 1-4 significantly exhibited nuclease activities on both RNA and pUC19 plasmid DNA. Moreover, the nuclease activity was further enhanced in the presence of oxidant (H2O2) and suggests the possible role of reactive oxygen species in DNA nicking ability of compounds 1-4. Furthermore, compounds 1, 2 and 4 exhibited significant cytotoxicity against mammalian cancer cell lines (HeLa, A549 and MDAMB-231). In addition, our results from Annexin/PI staining and DNA fragmentation assays revealed that these compounds are capable of inducing apoptosis and have potential to act as anticancer drugs.

Abstract
The lanthanide-radical approach has been applied to construct three isomorphous mononuclear lanthanide complexes [Ln(hfac)3(NIT2-PyOCH3)] (Ln(III) = Gd , Tb , Er ) in which the nitronyl nitroxide radical NIT2-PyOCH3 (NIT2-PyOCH3 = 2-(3'-methoxy-2'-pyridyl)-4,4,5,5-tetramethylimidazoline-1-oxyl-3-oxide) acts as a tridentate chelating ligand via the pyridyl nitrogen atom, the oxygen atom from the NO group and the oxygen atom from the methoxy group. The central lanthanide ions are nine-coordinated and their coordination geometry can be considered as an intermediate between muffin and spherical capped square antiprisms. Interestingly, an unusual antiferromagnetic interaction was observed between the Gd(iii) and the coordinated nitronyl nitroxide radical in complex . Moreover, ac magnetic susceptibilities display frequency-dependent out-of-phase signals in the case of the anisotropic Tb complex, indicating magnetic relaxation behavior.
