Synthesis and characterization of a uranium(III) complex containing a redox-active 2,2'-bipyridine ligand

Accessing a Highly Reducing Uranium(III) Complex through Cyclometalation

U(IV) cyclometalated complexes have shown rich reactivity, but their low oxidation state analogues still remain rare. Herein, we report the isolation of [K(2.2.2-cryptand)][UIII{N(SiMe3)2}2(κ2-C,N-CH2SiMe2NSiMe3)], 1, from the reduction of [UIII{N(SiMe)2}3] with KC8 and 2.2.2-cryptand at room temperature. Cyclic voltammetry studies demonstrate that 1 has a reduction potential similar to that of the previously reported [K(2.2.2-cryptand)][UII{N(SiMe)2}3] (Epc = -2.6 V versus Fc+/0 and Epc = -2.8 V versus Fc+/0, respectively). Complex 1, indeed, shows similar reducing abilities upon reactions with 4,4'-bipyridine, 2,2'-bipyridine, and 1-azidoadamantane. Interestingly, 1 was also found to be the first example of a mononuclear U(III) complex that is capable of reducing pyridine. In addition, it is shown that a wide variety of substrates can be inserted into the U-C bond, forming new U(III) metallacycles. These results highlight that cyclometalated U(III) complexes can serve as versatile precursors for a broad range of reactivity and for assembling a variety of novel chemical architectures.

Comparison of the structural, electrochemical, and spectroscopic properties of two cryptates of trivalent uranium

We describe a study of the influence of cryptand denticity on the structural, electronic, and electrochemical properties of UIII-containing cryptates. Two cryptands (2.2.2 and 2.2.1) are reported. The cryptand with the smaller denticity leads to negative electrochemical potentials and shorter bond lengths that are consistent with a better fit for UIII than the larger cryptand. These studies provide insight into the rational design of cryptand-based ligands for trivalent uranium.

Synthesis and Structure of [η5-1,2,4-(Me3Si)3C5H2]2Th(bipy) and Its Reactivity toward Small Molecules

Halide exchange of (Cp3tms)2ThCl2 (1; Cp3tms = η5-1,2,4-(Me3Si)3C5H2) with Me3SiI furnishes (Cp3tms)2ThI2 (2), which is then reduced with potassium graphite (KC8) in the presence of 2,2'-bipyridine to give the thorium bipyridyl metallocene (Cp3tms)2Th(bipy) (3) in good yield. Complex 3 was fully characterized and readily reacted with various small molecules. For example, 3 may serve as a synthetic equivalent for the (Cp3tms)2Th(II) fragment when exposed to CuI, Ph2S2, organic azides, and CS2. Moreover, upon the addition of thiobenzophenone Ph2CS, p-methylbenzaldehyde (p-MeC6H4)CHO, benzophenone Ph2CO, amidate PhCONH(p-tolyl), seleno-ketone (p,p'-dimethoxy), selenobenzophenone (p-MeOPh)2CSe, di(p-tolyl)methanimine (p-tolyl)2C═NH, 1,2-di(benzylidene)hydrazine (PhCH═N)2, and nitriles PhCN, PhCH2CN, and Ph2CHCN C-C coupling results to give (Cp3tms)2Th[(bipy)(Ph2CS)] (8), (Cp3tms)2Th[(bipy)(p-MePhCHO)] (9), (Cp3tms)2Th[(bipy)(Ph2CO)] (10), (Cp3tms)2Th[(bipy){(p-tolylNH)(Ph)CO}] (11), (Cp3tms)2Th[(bipy){(p-MeOPh)2CSe}] (12), (Cp3tms)2Th[(bipy){(p-tolyl)2CNH}] (13), (Cp3tms)2Th[(bipy)(PhCHNN═CHPh)] (14), (Cp3tms)2Th[(bipy)(PhCN)] (16), (Cp3tms)2Th[(bipy)(PhCH2CN)] (17), and (Cp3tms)2Th[(bipy)(Ph2CHCN)] (18), respectively. However, when thiazole is added to 3, the dimeric sulfido complex [(Cp3tms)2Th]2[μ-(bipy)CH2NCHCHS]2 (15) can be isolated. Moreover, the addition of isonitriles such as Me3CNC and PhCH2NC to 3 results in C-N bond cleavage and C-C coupling processes to form the thorium isocyanido amido complexes (Cp3tms)2Th[4-(Me3C)bipy](NC) (19) and (Cp3tms)2Th[4-(PhCH2)bipy](NC) (20), respectively. Nevertheless, upon exposure of 3 to (trimethylsilyl)diazomethane Me3SiCHN2, the bis-amido complex (Cp3tms)2Th[5,6-(Me3SiCH)bipy] (21), concomitant with N2 release, is isolated.

A 2,2'-bipyridyl calcium complex: synthesis, structure and reactivity studies

A 2,2'-bipyridyl calcium complex based on a tridentate ligand [CH₃C(N-2,6-ⁱPr₂C₆H₃)CHC(CH₃)NCH₂CH₂N(CH₃)₂]Ca(bipy)(THF) (1) was prepared by the reduction of {[CH₃C(N-2,6-ⁱPr₂C₆H₃)CHC(CH₃)NCH₂CH₂N(CH₃)₂]CaI(THF)}₂ with potassium graphite in the presence of 2,2'-bipyridine (bipy). Complex 1 is a good Ca(I)synthon, as shown by its reactivity with I₂, PhCH₂SSCH₂Ph, PhCH₂SeSeCH₂Ph and 9-fluorenone, yielding the calcium iodide complex [CH₃C(N-2,6-ⁱPr₂C₆H₃)CHC(CH₃)NCH₂CH₂N(CH₃)₂]CaI(bipy) (2), calcium thiolate [CH₃C(N-2,6-ⁱPr₂C₆H₃)CHC(CH₃)NCH₂CH₂N(CH₃)₂]Ca(SCH₂Ph)(bipy) (3), calcium selenolate [CH₃C(N-2,6-ⁱPr₂C₆H₃)CHC(CH₃)NCH₂CH₂N(CH₃)₂]Ca(SeCH₂Ph)(bipy) (4), and calcium ketyl complex [CH₃C(N-2,6-ⁱPr₂C₆H₃)CHC(CH₃)NCH₂CH₂N(CH₃)₂]Ca[O-(9-C₁₃H₈˙)](bipy)·2THF (5·2THF), respectively. In addition, reactions of complex 5 with CS₂, CH₂CHCH₂Br and PhCH₂Br give the corresponding dimeric bis(thiolate) complex {[S₂CC(CMe(NAr))C(Me)NCH₂CH₂NMe₂]Ca(DME)}₂ (6), dimeric calcium bromide complex {[(9-CH₂CHCH₂-C₁₃H₈-9)-O]CaBr(THF)(bipy)}₂ (7) and {[(9-C₆H₅CH₂-C₁₃H₈-9)-O]CaBr[O-(9-C₁₃H₈)](bipy)}₂ (8). These results demonstrated that the calcium ketyl complex 5 can also be employed as a single-electron transfer reagent. All the new compounds were characterized by various spectroscopic methods, and their solid-state structures were further confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses.

Small-Molecule Activation Mediated by [η5-1,3-(Me3Si)2C5H3]2U(bipy)

The uranium bipyridyl metallocene, [η⁵-1,3-(Me₃Si)₂C₅H₃]₂U(bipy) (2), is readily accessible in good yield by adding potassium graphite (KC₈) to a mixture of [η⁵-1,3-(Me₃Si)₂C₅H₃]₂UCl₂ (1) and 2,2'-bipyridine. Compound 2 was fully characterized and employed for small-molecule activation. It has been demonstrated that 2 may serve as a synthon for [η⁵-1,3-(Me₃Si)₂C₅H₃]₂U(II) fragment in the presence of Ph₂E₂ (E = S, Se), alkynes, and a variety of hetero-unsaturated molecules such as diazabutadienes, azine (Ph₂C═N)₂, o-benzoquinone, pyridine N-oxide, CS₂, isothiocyanates, and organic azides. However, upon exposure of 2 to thio-ketone Ph₂CS, aldehyde p-MePhCHO, ketone Ph₂CO, imine PhCH═NPh, azine (PhCH═N)₂, and nitrile PhCN, it may also promote C-C coupling reactions forming [η⁵-1,3-(Me₃Si)₂C₅H₃]₂U[(bipy)(Ph₂CS)] (16), [η⁵-1,3-(Me₃Si)₂C₅H₃]₂U[(bipy)(p-MePhCHO)] (17), [η⁵-1,3-(Me₃Si)₂C₅H₃]₂U[(bipy)(Ph₂CO)] (18), [η⁵-1,3-(Me₃Si)₂C₅H₃]₂U[(bipy)(PhCHNPh)] (19), [η⁵-1,3-(Me₃Si)₂C₅H₃]₂U[(bipy)(PhCHNN═CHPh)] (20), and [η⁵-1,3-(Me₃Si)₂C₅H₃]₂U[(N₂C₁₀H₇C(Ph)NH)] (22), respectively, in quantitative conversion. Furthermore, in the presence of CuI, a single-electron transfer (SET) process is observed to yield the uranium(III) iodide complex [η⁵-1,3-(Me₃Si)₂C₅H₃]₂U(I)(bipy) (15).

Exploring the Redox Properties of Bench-Stable Uranyl(VI) Diamido-Dipyrrin Complexes

The uranyl complexes UO₂(OAc)(L) and UO₂Cl(L) of the redox-active, acyclic diamido–dipyrrin anion L^– are reported and their redox properties explored. Because of the inert nature of the complexes toward hydrolysis and oxidation, synthesis of both the ligands and complexes was conducted under ambient conditions. Voltammetric, electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy, and density functional theory studies show that one-electron chemical reduction by the reagent CoCp₂ leads to the formation of a dipyrrin radical for both complexes [Cp₂Co][UO₂(OAc)(L^•)] and [Cp₂Co][UO₂Cl(L^•)].

Air-stable uranyl complexes of diamido−dipyrrin ligands undergo one-electron reduction to form highly air-sensitive ligand radical complexes instead of uranyl(V) complexes seen for diimine analogues.

Assembling Diuranium Complexes in Different States of Charge with a Bridging Redox-Active Ligand

Radical-bridged diuranium complexes are desirable for their potential high exchange coupling and single molecule magnet (SMM) behavior, but remain rare. Here we report for the first time radical-bridged diuranium(iv) and diuranium(iii) complexes. Reaction of [U{N(SiMe₃)₂}₃] with 2,2′-bipyrimidine (bpym) resulted in the formation of the bpym-bridged diuranium(iv) complex [{((Me₃Si)₂N)₃U^IV}₂(μ-bpym²⁻)], 1. Reduction with 1 equiv. KC₈ reduces the complex, affording [K(2.2.2-cryptand)][{((Me₃Si)₂N)₃U}₂(μ-bpym)], 2, which is best described as a radical-bridged U^III–bpym˙⁻–U^III complex. Further reduction of 1 with 2 equiv. KC₈, affords [K(2.2.2-cryptand)]₂[{((Me₃Si)₂N)₃U^III}₂(μ-bpym²⁻)], 3. Addition of AgBPh₄ to complex 1 resulted in the oxidation of the ligand, yielding the radical-bridged complex [{((Me₃Si)₂N)₃U^IV}₂(μ-bpym˙⁻)][BPh₄], 4. X-ray crystallography, electrochemistry, susceptibility data, EPR and DFT/CASSCF calculations are in line with their assignments. In complexes 2 and 4 the presence of the radical-bridge leads to slow magnetic relaxation.

Convenient routes to dinuclear complexes of uranium where two uranium centers are bridged by the redox-active ligand bpym were identified resulting in unique and stable radical-bridged dimetallic complexes of U(iii) and U(iv) showing SMM behaviour.

Redox-induced reversible P-P coupling in a uranium complex

A synthesized redox-active multidentate N-P ligand reacted with UCl₄ in the presence of KHMDS or ⁿBuLi, where two novel U(IV) complexes with or without P-P coupling were formed, respectively. The reversible P-P coupling in these complexes was observed in redox-induced reactions.

Delivery of a Masked Uranium(II) by an Oxide-Bridged Diuranium(III) Complex

Oxide is an attractive linker for building polymetallic complexes that provide molecular models for metal oxide activity, but studies of these systems are limited to metals in high oxidation states. Herein, we synthesized and characterized the molecular and electronic structure of diuranium bridged U^III /U^IV and U^III /U^III complexes. Reactivity studies of these complexes revealed that the U-O bond is easily broken upon addition of N-heterocycles resulting in the delivery of a formal equivalent of U^III and U^II , respectively, along with the uranium(IV) terminal-oxo coproduct. In particular, the U^III /U^III oxide complex effects the reductive coupling of pyridine and two-electron reduction of 4,4'-bipyridine affording unique examples of diuranium(III) complexes bridged by N-heterocyclic redox-active ligands. These results provide insight into the chemistry of low oxidation state metal oxides and demonstrate the use of oxo-bridged U^III /U^III complexes as a strategy to explore U^II reactivity.

Homoleptic tris(6,6′-dimethyl-2,2′-bipyridine) rare earth metal complexes

Homoleptic tris(bipy) rare earth metal complexes were synthesized and structurally characterized. While two parallel bipy radical anions were strongly antiferromagnetically coupled, the remaining bipy radical anion hosted most spin densities.

Syntheses of Dianionic α-Iminopyridine Rare-Earth Metal Complexes and Their Catalytic Acitivities toward Dehydrogenative Coupling of Amines with Hydrosilanes

Reactions of [(Me₃Si)₂N]₃RE(μ-Cl)Li(THF)₃ with aminomethylene-substituted pyridine 2-[O(CH₂CH₂)₂NCH₂CH₂NCH₂]C₅H₄N (1) gave the dianionic α-iminopyridine rare-earth metal amido complexes {μ-η²:σ¹:κ¹:κ¹-2-[O(CH₂CH₂)₂NCH₂CH₂NCH]C₅H₄N}₂RE₂[N(SiMe₃)₂]₂ (RE = Y(2a), La(2b), Pr(2c), Nd(2d), Sm(2e), Dy(2f), Er(2g), and Lu (2h)). However, reaction of [(Me₃Si)₂N]₃Y(μ-Cl)Li(THF)₃ with pyridin-2-ylmethyl-substituted amines such as 2-(RNHCH₂)C₅H₄N (R = ^tBu (3a) and 2,6-ⁱPr₂Ph (3b)) or benzyl-substituted amine O(CH₂CH₂)₂NCH₂CH₂NHCH₂C₆H₅ (5) afforded the corresponding yttrium complexes containing monoanionic ligands [2-(RNCH₂)C₅H₄N]₂YN(SiMe₃)₂ (R = ^tBu (4a) and 2,6-ⁱPr₂Ph (4b)) or [O(CH₂CH₂)₂NCH₂CH₂NCH₂C₆H₅][(Me₃Si)₂N)]Y(μ-Cl)(μ-η³-O(CH₂CH₂)₂NCH₂CH₂NCH₂C₆H₅)Li(THF) (6). Dianionic α-iminopyridine rare-earth metal amido complexes showed high catalytic activities for the dehydrogenation coupling reaction of hydrosilanes and amines providing a variety of silylamines in high yields.

Monomeric thorium chalcogenolates with bipyridine and terpyridine ligands

Thorium chalcogenolates Th(ER)4 react with 2,2'-bipyridine (bipy) to form complexes with the stoichiometry (bipy)2Th(ER)4 (E = S, Se; R = Ph, C6F5). All four compounds have been isolated and characterized by spectroscopic methods and low-temperature single crystal X-ray diffraction. Two of the products, (bipy)2Th(SC6F5)4 and (bipy)2Th(SeC6F5)4, crystallize with lattice solvent, (bipy)2Th(SPh)4 crystallizes with no lattice solvent, and the selenolate (bipy)2Th(SePh)4 crystallizes in two phases, with and without lattice solvent. In all four compounds the available volume for coordination bounded by the two bipy ligands is large enough to allow significant conformational flexibility of thiolate or selenolate ligands. 77Se NMR confirms that the structures of the selenolate products are the same in pyridine solution and in the solid state. Attempts to prepare analogous derivatives with 2,2',6',2''-terpyridine (terpy) were successful only in the isolation of (terpy)(py)Th(SPh)4, the first terpy compound of thorium. These materials are thermochromic, with color attributed to ligand-to-ligand charge transfer excitations.

Control of Ligand pKa Values Tunes the Electrocatalytic Dihydrogen Evolution Mechanism in a Redox-Active Aluminum(III) Complex

Redox-active ligands bring electron- and proton-transfer reactions to main-group coordination chemistry. In this Forum Article, we demonstrate how ligand pK_a values can be used in the design of a reaction mechanism for a ligand-based electron- and proton-transfer pathway, where the ligand retains a negative charge and enables dihydrogen evolution. A bis(pyrazolyl)pyridine ligand, ^iPrPz₂P, reacts with 2 equiv of AlCl₃ to afford [(^iPrPz₂P)AlCl₂(THF)][AlCl₄] (1). A reaction involving two-electron reduction and single-ligand protonation of 1 affords [(^iPrHPz₂P^-)AlCl₂] (2), where each of the electron- and proton-transfer events is ligand-centered. Protonation of 2 would formally close a catalytic cycle for dihydrogen production. At -1.26 V versus SCE, in a 0.3 M Bu₄NPF₆/tetrahydrofuran solution with salicylic acid or (HNEt₃)⁺ as the source of H⁺, 1 produced dihydrogen electrocatalytically, according to cyclic voltammetry and controlled potential electrolysis experiments. The mechanism for the reaction is most likely two electron-transfer steps followed by two chemical steps based on the available reactivity information. A comparison of this work with our previously reported aluminum complexes of the phenyl-substituted bis(imino)pyridine system (^PhI₂P) reveals that the pK_a values of the N-donor atoms in ^iPrPz₂P are lower, which facilitates reduction before ligand protonation. In contrast, the ^PhI₂P ligand complexes of aluminum are protonated twice before reduction liberates dihydrogen.

Benzoquinonoid-bridged dinuclear actinide complexes

Elucidating the Mechanism of Uranium Mediated Diazene N═N Bond Cleavage

Investigation into the reactivity of reduced uranium species toward diazenes has revealed key intermediates in the four-electron cleavage of azobenzene. Trivalent Tp*₂U(CH₂Ph) (1a) (Tp* = hydrotris(3,5-dimethylpyrazolyl)borate) and Tp*₂U(2,2'-bpy) (1b) both perform the two-electron reduction of diazenes affording η²-hydrazido complexes Tp*₂U(AzBz) (2-AzBz) (AzBz = azobenzene) and Tp*₂U(BCC) (2-BCC) (BCC = benzo[c]cinnoline) in contrast to precursors of the bis(Cp*) (Cp* = 1,2,3,4,5-pentamethylcyclopentadienide) ligand framework. The four-electron cleavage of diazenes to give trans-bis(imido) species was possible by using Cp*U(^MesPDI^Me)(THF) (3) (^MesPDI^Me = 2,6-((Mes)N═CMe)₂-C₅H₃N, Mes = 2,4,6-trimethylphenyl), which is supported by a highly reduced trianionic chelate that undergoes electron transfer. This proceeds via concerted addition at a single uranium center supported by both a crossover experiment and through addition of an asymmetrically substituted diazene, Ph-N═N-Tol. Further investigation of 3 and its substituted analogue, Cp*U(^tBu-^MesPDI^Me)(THF) (3-^tBu) (^tBu-^MesPDI^Me = 2,6-((Mes)N═CMe)₂-p-C(CH₃)₃-C₅H₂N), with benzo[c]cinnoline, revealed that the four-electron cleavage occurs first by a single electron reduction of the diazene with the redox chemistry performed solely at the redox-active pyridine(diimine) to form dimeric [Cp*U(BCC)(^MesHPDI^Me)]₂ (5) and Cp*U(BCC)(^tBu-^MesPDI^Me) (6). While a transient pyridine(diimine) triplet diradical in the formation of 5 results in H atom abstraction and p-pyridine coupling, the tert-butyl moiety in 6 allows for electronic rearrangement to occur, precluding deleterious pyridine-radical coupling. The monomeric analogue of 5, Cp*U(BCC)(^MesPDI^Me) (7), was synthesized via salt metathesis from Cp*UI(^MesPDI^Me) (3-I). All complexes have been characterized by ¹H NMR and electronic absorption spectroscopies, X-ray diffraction, and, where pertinent, EPR spectroscopy. Further, the electronic structures of 3-I, 5, and 7 have been investigated by SQUID magnetometry.

Inner-sphere vs. outer-sphere reduction of uranyl supported by a redox-active, donor-expanded dipyrrin

The uranyl(vi) complex UO₂Cl(L) of the redox-active, acyclic diimino-dipyrrin anion, L^- is reported and its reaction with inner- and outer-sphere reductants studied. Voltammetric, EPR-spectroscopic and X-ray crystallographic studies show that chemical reduction by the outer-sphere reagent CoCp₂ initially reduces the ligand to a dipyrrin radical, and imply that a second equivalent of CoCp₂ reduces the U(vi) centre to form U(v). Cyclic voltammetry indicates that further outer-sphere reduction to form the putative U(iv) trianion only occurs at strongly cathodic potentials. The initial reduction of the dipyrrin ligand is supported by emission spectra, X-ray crystallography, and DFT; the latter also shows that these outer-sphere reactions are exergonic and proceed through sequential, one-electron steps. Reduction by the inner-sphere reductant [TiCp₂Cl]₂ is also likely to result in ligand reduction in the first instance but, in contrast to the outer-sphere case, reduction of the uranium centre becomes much more favoured, allowing the formation of a crystallographically characterised, doubly-titanated U(iv) complex. In the case of inner-sphere reduction only, ligand-to-metal electron-transfer is thermodynamically driven by coordination of Lewis-acidic Ti(iv) to the uranyl oxo, and is energetically preferable over the disproportionation of U(v). Overall, the involvement of the redox-active dipyrrin ligand in the reduction chemistry of UO₂Cl(L) is inherent to both inner- and outer-sphere reduction mechanisms, providing a new route to accessing a variety of U(vi), U(v), and U(iv) complexes.

Synthesis and electronic structure determination of uranium(vi) ligand radical complexes

Pentagonal bipyramidal uranyl (UO₂²⁺) complexes of salen ligands were prepared and the electronic structure of the one-electron oxidized species[1a–c]+were investigated in solution.

A Mononuclear Uranium(IV) Single-Molecule Magnet with an Azobenzene Radical Ligand

A tetravalent uranium compound with a radical azobenzene ligand, namely, [{(SiMe2 NPh)3 -tacn}U(IV) (η(2) -N2 Ph2 (.) )] (2), was obtained by one-electron reduction of azobenzene by the trivalent uranium compound [U(III) {(SiMe2 NPh)3 -tacn}] (1). Compound 2 was characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and (1) H NMR, IR, and UV/Vis/NIR spectroscopy. The magnetic properties of 2 and precursor 1 were studied by static magnetization and ac susceptibility measurements, which for the former revealed single-molecule magnet behaviour for the first time in a mononuclear U(IV) compound, whereas trivalent uranium compound 1 does not exhibit slow relaxation of the magnetization at low temperatures. A first approximation to the magnetic behaviour of these compounds was attempted by combining an effective electrostatic model with a phenomenological approach using the full single-ion Hamiltonian.

Radical anionic versus neutral 2,2'-bipyridyl coordination in uranium complexes supported by amide and ketimide ligands

The synthesis and characterization of (bipy)(2)U(N[t-Bu]Ar)(2) (1-(bipy)(2), bipy = 2,2'-bipyridyl, Ar = 3,5-C(6)H(3)Me(2)), (bipy)U(N[(1)Ad]Ar)(3) (2-bipy), (bipy)(2)U(NC[t-Bu]Mes)(3) (3-(bipy)(2), Mes = 2,4,6-C(6)H(2)Me(3)), and IU(bipy)(NC[t-Bu]Mes)(3) (3-I-bipy) are reported. X-ray crystallography studies indicate that bipy coordinates as a radical anion in 1-(bipy)(2) and 2-bipy, and as a neutral ligand in 3-I-bipy. In 3-(bipy)(2), one of the bipy ligands is best viewed as a radical anion, the other as a neutral ligand. The electronic structure assignments are supported by NMR spectroscopy studies of exchange experiments with 4,4'-dimethyl-2,2'-bipyridyl and also by optical spectroscopy. In all complexes, uranium was assigned a +4 formal oxidation state.

Spectroscopic and Structural Elucidation of Uranium Dioxophenoxazine Complexes

Uranium derivatives of a redox-active, dioxophenoxazine ligand, (DOPO(q))2UO2, (DOPO(sq))UI2(THF)2, (DOPO(cat))UI(THF)2, and Cp*U(DOPO(cat))(THF)2 (DOPO = 2,4,6,8-tetra-tert-butyl-1-oxo-1H-phenoxazin-9-olate), have been synthesized from U(VI) and U(III) starting materials. Full characterization of these species show uranium complexes bearing ligands in three different oxidation states. The electronic structures of these complexes have been explored using (1)H NMR and electronic absorption spectroscopies, and where possible, X-ray crystallography and SQUID magnetometry.
