Interaction of SbCl52− and Thioether Groups at the Open Coordination Sites of Platinum(II) Diimine Complexes

Intermolecular Metal-Involving Pnictogen Bonding: The Case of σ-(SbIII)-Hole···dz2[PtII] Interaction

Cocrystallizations of trans-[PtX'2(NCNR2)2] (R2 = Me2, X' = Cl 1a, Br 1b, I 1c; R2 = (CH2)5, X' = I 2c) with SbX3 (X = Cl, Br, I) gave 1:2 cocrystals 1a·2SbCl3, 1b·2SbBr3, 1c·2SbCl3, 1c·2SbBr3, 1c·2SbI3, and 2c·2SbI3. In all six X-ray structures, the association of the molecular coformers is achieved mainly by SbIII···dz2[PtII] metal-involving intermolecular pnictogen bonding. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations (based on experimentally determined geometries) using both gas-phase and solid-state approximations revealed that a σ-(Sb)-hole interacts with an area of negative potential associated with the dz2-orbital of the positively charged platinum(II) sites, thus forming a pnictogen bond whose energy falls in the range between -7.3 and -16.9 kcal/mol.

Square Planar Pt(II) Ion as Electron Donor in Pnictogen Bonding Interactions

It has been proposed that late transition metals with low coordination numbers (square planar or linear) can act as nucleophiles and participate in σ-hole interactions as electron donors. This is due to the existence, in this type of metal complexes, of a pair of electrons located at high energy d-orbitals (dz2 or dx2-y2), which are adequate for interacting with antibonding σ-orbitals [σ*(X–Y)] where Y is usually an electron withdrawing element and X an element of the p-block. This type of d[M]→σ*(X–Y) interaction has been reported for metals of groups 9–11 in oxidation states +1 and +2 (d8 and d10) as electron donors and σ-holes located in halogen and chalcogen atoms as electron acceptors. To our knowledge, it has not been described for σ-holes located in pnictogen atoms. In this manuscript, evidence for the existence of pnictogen bonding involving the square planar Pt(II) metal as the electron donor and Sb as the electron acceptor is provided by using an X-ray structure retrieved from the Cambridge Structural Database (CSD) and theoretical calculations. In particular, the quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM), the noncovalent interaction plot (NCIPlot) and molecular electrostatic potential (MEP) methods were used. Moreover, to further confirm the nature of the Sb···Pt(II) contact, a recently developed method was used where the electron density (ED) and electrostatic potential (ESP) distribution were compared along the Sb···Pt(II) bond path.

pH-Mediated Colorimetric and Luminescent Sensing of Aqueous Nitrate Anions by a Platinum(II) Luminophore@Mesoporous Silica Composite

Increased levels of nitrate (NO₃^-) in the environment can be detrimental to human health. Herein, we report a robust, cost-effective, and scalable, hybrid material-based colorimetric/luminescent sensor technology for rapid, selective, sensitive, and interference-free in situ NO₃^- detection. These hybrid materials are based on a square-planar platinum(II) salt [Pt(tpy)Cl]PF₆ (tpy = 2,2';6',2″-terpyridine) supported on mesoporous silica. The platinum salt undergoes a vivid change in color and luminescence upon exposure to aqueous NO₃^- anions at pH ≤ 0 caused by substitution of the PF₆^- anions by aqueous NO₃^-. This change in photophysics of the platinum salt is induced by a rearrangement of its crystal lattice that leads to an extended Pt···Pt···Pt interaction, along with a concomitant change in its electronic structure. Furthermore, incorporating the material into mesoporous silica enhances the surface area and increases the detection sensitivity. A NO₃^- detection limit of 0.05 mM (3.1 ppm) is achieved, which is sufficiently lower than the ambient water quality limit of 0.16 mM (10 ppm) set by the United States Environmental Protection Agency. The colorimetric/luminescence of the hybrid material is highly selective to aqueous NO₃^- anions in the presence of other interfering anions, suggesting that this material is a promising candidate for the rapid NO₃^- detection and quantification in practical samples without separation, concentration, or other pretreatment steps.

Triple the fun: tris(ferrocenyl)arene-based gold(i) complexes for redox-switchable catalysis

The modular syntheses of C₃-symmetric tris(ferrocenyl)arene-based tris-phosphanes and their homotrinuclear gold(i) complexes are reported. Choosing the arene core allows fine-tuning of the exact oxidation potentials and thus tailoring of the electrochemical response. The tris[chloridogold(i)] complexes were investigated in the catalytic ring-closing isomerisation of N-(2-propyn-1-yl)benzamide, showing cooperative behaviour vs. a mononuclear chloridogold(i) complex. Adding one, two, or three equivalents of 1,1′-diacetylferrocenium[tetrakis(perfluoro-tert-butoxy)aluminate] as an oxidant during the catalytic reaction (in situ) resulted in a distinct, stepwise influence on the resulting catalytic rates. Isolation of the oxidised species is possible, and using them as (pre-)catalysts (ex situ oxidation) confirmed the activity trend. Proving the intactness of the P–Au–Cl motif during oxidation, the tri-oxidised benzene-based complex has been structurally characterised.

Trinuclear gold(i) complexes of C₃-symmetric tris(ferrocenyl)arene-based tris-phosphanes with four accessible oxidation states catalyse the ring-closing isomerisation of N-(2-propyn-1-yl)benzamide with different rates depending on their redox state.

Hemilabile bonding of 1-oxa-4,7-dithiacyclononane in cyclometallated palladium(ii) complexes

The synthesis and characterization of a series of cyclometallated complexes of Pd(ii) incorporating the mixed donor ligand 1-oxa-4,7-dithiacyclononane ([9]aneS₂O) are presented in this study. Complexes of the form [Pd(C^N)([9]aneS₂O)](PF₆) (C^N = 2-phenylpyridine (ppy) 1b, 4-(2-pyridyl)benzaldehyde (ppyCHO) 2b, 7,8-benzoquinoline (bzq) 3b, 2-benzothienylpyridine (btp) 4b, 2-phenylbenzothiazole (pbt) 5b), were obtained in high-yield from a simple two-step synthetic scheme. All of these complexes were fully characterized by NMR, ESI-MS, IR, combustion analyses, and most (1b, 2b, 4b, 5b) by X-ray crystallography. Solution ¹H and ¹³C NMR studies of [Pd(C^N)([9]aneS₂O)](PF₆) complexes demonstrate complicated [9]aneS₂O behavior at room temperature. Variable temperature NMR reveals dynamic bonding of the [9]aneS₂O ligand consistent with the presence of both endodentate and exodentate bonding modes. This is in stark contrast to the related [9]aneS₃ (1,4,7-trithiacyclononane) cogeners that demonstrate fluxional endodentate bonding only in solution. X-ray structures reveal only exodenate [9]aneS₂O bonding in this series, unlike the related [9]aneS₃ complexes that show endodenate bonding with an axial PdS interaction. DFT calculations performed on endo and exo [9]aneS₂O bonding forms of 4b, as well as a transition state calculation for interconversion, suggest reasonable access to both bonding forms based on the energy barrier. Natural bond order calculations provide further evidence for a weak axial PdO interaction in the endo form of 4b.

A new synthetic route to in-chain metallopolymers via copper(i) catalyzed azide-platinum-acetylide iClick

The first example of an in-chain metallo-poly(triazolate) synthesized by CuAAC is reported. Azido-platinum-acetylide (A-M-B) monomers are catalytically polymerized with copper(i) acetate to yield 1,2,3-triazolate linked Pt(ii) units. The metallopolymers are characterized by multinuclear NMR, IR, UV/Vis, GPC, and MS.

Spectroscopic, structural and computational analysis of [Re(CO)3(dippM)Br]n+ (dippM = 1,1′-bis(diiso-propylphosphino)metallocene, M = Fe, n = 0 or 1; M = Co, n = 1)

[Bmim]2SbCl5: a main group metal-containing ionic liquid exhibiting tunable photoluminescence and white-light emission

Presented is an antimony-based photoluminescent material, namely [Bmim]₂SbCl₅, exhibiting bright yellow and white light photoluminescence with quantum yield as high as 86.3%.

X-ray and synchrotron diffraction studies of 2-(pyridin-2-yl)-1,10-phenanthroline in the role of ligand for two copper polymorphs or hydrogen bonded with 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-4-oxopiperidinium hexafluorophosphate

Different extended packing motifs of dichlorido[2-(pyridin-2-yl)-1,10-phenanthroline]copper(II), [CuCl2(C17H11N3)], are obtained, depending on the crystallization conditions. A triclinic form, (I), is obtained from dimethylformamide-diethyl ether or methanol, whereas crystallization from dimethylformamide-water yields a monoclinic form, (II). In each case, the Cu(II) centre is in a five-coordinate distorted square-pyramidal geometry. The extended packing for both forms can be described as a highly offset π-stacking arrangement, with interlayer distances of 3.674 (3) and 3.679 (3) Å for forms (I) and (II), respectively. The reaction of diprotonated Pt(tmpip2NCN)Cl [tmpip2NCN = 2,6-bis(2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidylmethyl)benzyl] with AgPF6 under acidic conditions, followed by the addition of 2-(pyridin-2-yl)-1,10-phenanthroline, results in a hydrogen-bonded cocrystal, 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-4-oxopiperidinium hexafluorophosphate-2-(pyridin-2-yl)-1,10-phenanthroline (1/1), C9H18NO(+)·PF6(-)·C17H11N3, (III). The extended packing maximizes π-π interactions in a parallel face-to-face arrangement, with an interlayer stacking distance of 3.4960 (14) Å.
