Abstract
Bismuth polycations have garnered significant attention from researchers due to their extraordinary and counter-intuitive structures and stoichiometries. Despite extensive experimental and theoretical investigations, understanding of the bonding in such clusters remains insufficient. An AdNDP bonding analysis was conducted to elucidate the bonding characteristics using both homoatomic and heteroatomic bismuth clusters with various stoichiometries. Analysis of the calculated nucleus-independent chemical shift data confirmed the aromatic nature of these species. Universal bonding patterns were identified that can be applied to a range of homoatomic and heteroatomic bismuth clusters. Additionally, calculations of absorbance and fluorescence spectra were performed to gain insights into the near-infrared emission and establish a potential correlation between absorbance and the identified bonding patterns.

Abstract
Endohedral Zintl clusters-multi-metallic anionic molecules in which a d-block or f-block metal atom is enclosed by p-block (semi)metal atoms-are very topical in contemporary inorganic chemistry. Not only do they provide insight into the embryonic states of intermetallic compounds and show promise in catalytic applications, they also shed light on the nature of chemical bonding between metal atoms. Over the past two decades, a plethora of endohedral Zintl clusters have been synthesized, revealing a fascinating diversity of molecular architectures. Many different perspectives on the bonding in them have emerged in the literature, sometimes complementary and sometimes conflicting, and there has been no concerted effort to classify the entire family based on a small number of unifying principles. A closer look, however, reveals distinct patterns in structure and bonding that reflect the extent to which valence electrons are shared between the endohedral atom and the cluster shell. We show that there is a much more uniform relationship between the total valence electron count and the structure and bonding patterns of these clusters than previously anticipated. All of the p-block (semi)metal shells can be placed on a ladder of total valence electron count that ranges between 4n+2 (closo deltahedra), 5n (closed, three-bonded polyhedra) and 6n (crown-like structures). Although some structural isomerism can occur for a given electron count, the presence of a central metal cation imposes a preference for rather regular and approximately spherical structures which maximise electrostatic interactions between the metal and the shell. In cases where the endohedral metal has relatively accessible valence electrons (from the d or f shells), it can also contribute its valence electrons to the total electron count of the cluster shell, raising the effective electron count and often altering the structural preferences. The electronic situation in any given cluster is considered from different perspectives, some more physical and some more chemical, in a way that highlights the important point that, in the end, they explain the same situation. This article provides a unifying perspective of bonding that captures the structural diversity across this diverse family of multimetallic clusters.

Bismuth-rich bimetallic clusters (CuBi8)3+ and [MBi10]4+ (M = Pd, Pt) from ionothermal synthesis. ZEITSCHRIFT FUR NATURFORSCHUNG SECTION B-A JOURNAL OF CHEMICAL SCIENCES 2021. Abstract
Abstract
The reaction of Bi, BiBr3, and CuBr in the Lewis-acidic ionic liquid [BMIm]Br·4AlBr3 (BMIm = 1-n-butyl-3-limidazolium) at 180 °C yielded air-sensitive, shiny black crystals of (CuBi8)[AlBr4]2[Al2Br7]. Crystals of [MBi10][AlCl4]4 (M = Pd, Pt) were obtained by reacting Bi, BiCl3, and MCl2 under similar conditions. The structures have been determined by X-ray diffraction on single-crystals and were found to be very similar to that of the known analogues with other halogens, although not isostructural. In crystals of the complex salts, polyhedral bimetallic clusters (CuBi8)3+ or [MBi10]4+ are embedded in matrices of halogenidoaluminate anions. The heteroatomic nido-cluster (CuBi8)3+ consists of a (Bi8)2+ square antiprism η4-coordinating a copper(I) cation. In the cluster cation [MBi10]4+, the metal atoms M center a pentagonal antiprism of bismuth atoms.

Abstract
Closo-deltahedral Bi(5)(3+) cluster in Bi(5)(GaCl(4))(3), which can be synthesized in benzene by oxidizing bismuth metal either with BiCl(3) or GaCl(3), respectively, can absorb ultraviolet, visible and infrared lights, and luminesce superbroadly in near to mid infrared (NMIR) spectral range from 1 to 3μm at room temperature. Slight geometry change of the cluster can lead to the redshift of emission peak. These observations may initialize the development of Bi-based NMIR light sources with superbroad emission spectrum, where Bi(5)(3+) or similar polycationic species act as activators. Disputable crystal structure of Bi(5)(GaCl(4))(3) was redefined by classic Rietveld refining analysis. Consistent with crystallographic data, excitation, emission, temporal decay and time-resolved infrared emission spectra all reveal only one type of luminescent centers, viz. Bi(5)(3+), in the compound. And a new absorption of Bi(5)(3+) was found at ~1100nm.

Abstract
We have quantum chemically investigated the structure, stability, and bonding mechanism in highly aggregated alkali-metal salts of bismuthanediide anions [RBi](2-) using relativistic density functional theory (DFT, at ZORA-BP86/TZ2P) in combination with a quantitative energy decomposition analysis (EDA). Our model systems are alkali-metal-supported bismuth polyhedra [(RBi)(n)M(2n-4)](4-) with unique interpenetrating shells of a bismuth polyhedron and an alkali-metal superpolyhedron. Furthermore, we have analyzed the trianionic inclusion complexes [M'@{(RBi)(n)M(2n-4)}](3-) involving an additional endohedral alkali-metal ion M'. The main objective is to assist the further development of synthetic approaches toward this class of compounds. Our analyses led to electron-counting rules relating, for example, the number of bonding orbitals (N(bond)) of the cage molecules [(RBi)(n)M(2n+Q)](Q) to the number of bismuth atoms (n(Bi)), alkali-metal atoms (n(M)), and net charge Q as N(bond) = n(Bi) + n(M) - Q (R = one-electron donor ligand; M = alkali metal; n = 4-12; Q = -4, -6, -8). Finally, on the basis of our findings, we predict the next members in the 5-fold symmetrical row of alkali-metallobismaspheres with a macroicosahedral arrangement.
