Abstract
The dihydrogen complex Ru(H2)2H2(P(C5H9)3)2 has been investigated, via ab initio accelerated molecular dynamics, to elucidate the H ligands dynamics and possible reaction paths for H2/H exchange. We have characterized the free energy landscape associated with the H atoms positional exchange around the Ru centre. From the free energy landscape, we have been able to estimate a barrier of 6 kcal mol-1 for the H2/H exchange process. We have also observed a trihydrogen intermediate as a passing state along some of the possible reaction pathways.

Abstract
We report a density functional study (B97-D2 level) of the mechanism(s) operating in the alcohol decarbonylation that occurs as an important side-reaction during dehydrogenation catalysed by [RuH2(H2)(PPh3)3]. By using MeOH as the substrate, three distinct pathways have been fully characterised involving either neutral tris- or bis-phosphines or anionic bis-phosphine complexes after deprotonation. α-Agostic formaldehyde and formyl complexes are key intermediates, and the computed rate-limiting barriers are similar between the various decarbonylation and dehydrogenation paths. The key steps have also been studied for reactions involving EtOH and iPrOH as substrates, rationalising the known resistance of the latter towards decarbonylation. Kinetic isotope effects (KIEs) were predicted computationally for all pathways and studied experimentally for one specific decarbonylation path designed to start from [RuH(OCH3)(PPh3)3]. From the good agreement between computed and experimental KIEs (observed kH/kD =4), the rate-limiting step for methanol decarbonylation has been ascribed to the formation of the first agostic intermediate from a transient formaldehyde complex.

Abstract
The binding of a dihydrogen molecule (H(2)) to a transition metal center in an organometallic complex was a major discovery because it changed the way chemists think about the reactivity of molecules with chemically "inert" strong bonds such as H H and C H. Before the seminal finding of side-on bonded H(2) in W(CO)(3)(PR(3))(2)(H(2)), it was generally believed that H(2) could not bind to another atom in stable fashion and would split into two separate H atoms to form a metal dihydride before undergoing chemical reaction. Metal-bound saturated molecules such as H(2), silanes, and alkanes (sigma-complexes) have a chemistry of their own, with surprisingly varied structures, bonding, and dynamics. H(2) complexes are of increased relevance for H(2) production and storage in the hydrogen economy of the future.

Abstract
Mixtures of deuterium labeled complexes (p-XPOCOP)IrH2-xDx (1-6-d0-2) {POCOP = [C6H2-1,3-[OP(tBu)2]2] X = MeO (1), Me (2), H (3), F (4), C6F5 (5), and ArF = 3,5-(CF3)2-C6H3 (6)} have been generated by reaction of (p-XPOCOP)IrH2 complexes with HD gas in benzene followed by removal of the solvent under high vacuum. Spectroscopic analysis employing 1H and 2D NMR reveals significant temperature and solvent dependent isotopic shifts and HD coupling constants. Complexes 1-6-d1 in toluene and pentane between 296 and 213 K exhibit coupling constants JHD of 3.8-9.0 Hz, suggesting the presence of an elongated H2 ligand, which is confirmed by T1(min) measurements of complexes 1, 3, and 6 in toluene-d8. In contrast, complex 6-d1 exhibits JHD = 0 Hz in CH2Cl2 or CDCl2F whereas isotopic shifts up to -4.05 ppm have been observed by lowering the temperature from 233 to 133 K in CDCl2F. The large and temperature-dependent isotope effects are attributed to nonstatistical occupation of two different hydride environments. The experimental observations are interpreted in terms of a two component model involving rapid equilibration of solvated Ir(III) dihydride and Ir(I) dihydrogen structures.

Abstract
Computational and experimental results presented in this paper demonstrate that the H-H distance in stretched dihydrogen complexes can be hypersensitive to a variety of weak intra- and intermolecular interactions, including those with bulky ligands and solvent molecules, hydrogen-bonding interactions, or ion-pairing. Particularly, the complex IrH(H...H)Cl(2)(P(i)Pr(3))(2) which contains a stretched dihydrogen ligand in the crystalline form, as shown by neutron diffraction, is a trihydride in solution. The difference is due to the intermolecular Ir-Cl...H-Ir hydrogen bonding in the solid.

Abstract
In contrast to [Cp(2)MoH(3)](+), which is a thermally stable trihydride complex, the ansa-bridged analogue [(eta-C(5)H(4))(2)CMe(2)MoH(H(2))](+) (1) is a thermally labile dihydrogen/hydride complex. Partial deuteration of the hydride ligands allows observation of J(H)(-)(D) = 11.9 Hz in 1-d(1) and 9.9 Hz in 1-d(2) (245 K), indicative of a dihydrogen/hydride structure. There is a slight preference for deuterium to concentrate in the dihydrogen ligand. A rapid dynamic process interchanges the hydride and dihydrogen moieties in complex 1. Low temperature (1)H NMR spectra of 1 give a single hydride resonance, which broadens at very low temperature due to rapid dipole-dipole relaxation (T(1) = 23 ms (750 MHz, 175 K) for the hydride resonance in 1). Low temperature (1)H NMR spectra of 1-d(2) allow the observation of decoalescence at 180 K into two resonances. The bound dihydrogen ligand exhibits hindered rotation with DeltaG(150) = 7.4 kcal/mol, but H atom exchange is still rapid at all accessible temperatures (down to 130 K). Density functional calculations confirm the dihydrogen/hydride structure as the ground state for the molecule and give estimates for the energy of two hydrogen exchange processes in good agreement with experiment. The presence of the C ansa bridge is shown to decrease the ability of the metallocene fragment to donate to the hydrogens, thus stabilizing the (eta(2)-H(2)) unit and modulating the barrier to H(2) rotation.

Abstract
para-Nitrobenzaldehyde semicarbazone (O(2)N(para)-C(6)H(4)C(H)=N-NH-CO-NH(2)) undergoes unprecedented chemical transformation during its reaction with [Os(PPh(3))(2)(CO)(2)(HCOO)(2)] in different alcoholic (R'OH, R' = CH(2)CH(2)OCH(3), CH(2)CH(3), CH(2)CH(2)CH(3), and CH(2)CH(2)CH(2)CH(3)) solvents whereby the NH(2) group of the semicarbazone ligand is displaced by a OR' group provided by the solvents. The transformed semicarbazone ligand binds to osmium as a bidentate N,O-donor forming five-membered chelate ring to afford complexes of type [Os(PPh(3))(2)(CO)(H)(L-OR')], where L-OR' refers to the transformed semicarbazone ligand. Structure of the [Os(PPh(3))(2)(CO)(H)(L-OCH(2)CH(2)OCH(3))] complex has been determined by X-ray crystallography. All the [Os(PPh(3))(2)(CO)(H)(L-OR')] complexes are diamagnetic and show characteristic (1)H NMR signals. They also show intense absorptions in the visible and ultraviolet region. Cyclic voltammetry on the complexes shows an irreversible oxidative response within 0.69-0.88 V versus SCE.

Abstract
Molecules of the type mer-M(H)3(NO)L2 [M = Ru (1), Os (2); L = PR3] are characterized on the basis of 1H NMR T1min values and IR spectra as pseudo-octahedral trihydrides significantly distorted by compression of the cis H-M-H angles to approximately 75 degrees. The distortion, uncharacteristic of six-coordinate d6 complexes, is rationalized with DFT (B3LYP) calculations as being driven by increased H-to-M sigma donation and by the exceptional pi-accepting ability of linear NO+. In both 1 and 2, hydrides undergo intramolecular site exchange with delta HHH++(1) = 10-11 kcal/mol and delta HHH++(2) = 16-20 kcal/mol, depending on L, whereas for mer-Ru(H)3(NO)(PtBu2Me)2 (1b), moderate exchange couplings (up to 77 Hz) are featured in the low-temperature 1H NMR spectra, in addition to chemical exchange. On the basis of experimental and theoretical results, a dihydrogen intermediate is suggested to mediate hydride site exchange in 1. The cis H-M-H distortion shortens the tunneling path for the exchanging hydrides in 1, thereby increasing the tunneling rate; diminishes the "conflict" between trans hydrides in the mer geometry; and decreases the nucleophilicity of the hydrides. The generality of the observed structural distortion and its dependence on the ligand environment in late transition metal tri- and dihydrides are discussed. A less reducing metal center is generally characterized by greater distortion.

Abstract
The reactions between cis-[RuH(2)(DPPE)(2)] and a number of acids in THF solution (DPPE = Ph(2)PCH(2)CH(2)PPh(2)) show biphasic kinetics, with initial formation of trans-[RuH(H(2))(DPPE)(2)](+) followed by slower substitution of coordinated dihydrogen by the anion of the acid. The formation of the dihydrogen complex is a second-order process that occurs with an inverse kinetic isotope effect and rate constants k(HX) strongly dependent on the nature of the acid. There is a linear correlation between the values of log k(HX) for cis-[RuH(2)(DPPE)(2)] and the related cis-[FeH(2)(PP(3))] [PP(3) = P(CH(2)CH(2)PPh(2))(3)] that leads to two parameters, S and R, that can be used as a measure of the selectivity and intrinsic reactivity of the dihydride toward acids. The possible contributions to the values of these parameters are discussed, especially the role of the isomerization of the starting complex and the basicity of the reacting species. The substitution of coordinated dihydrogen in trans-[RuH(H(2))(DPPE)(2)](+) occurs through a simple dissociative mechanism instead of the more complicated one previously proposed for substitutions in the analogous Fe complex; the mechanistic change is associated with the relative strength of the M-H(2) and M-P(chelate) bonds.
