Synthesis and Structures of Intramolecularly Base-Coordinated Group 15 Aryl Halides

Coordination environment dependence of anticancer activity in cyclometalated bismuth(III) complexes with C,O-chelating ligands

In this paper, a series of cyclometalated bismuth(III) complexes bearing C,O-bidentate ligands were synthesized and characterized by techniques such as UV-vis, NMR, HRMS, and single crystal X-ray diffraction. Meanwhile, their cytotoxicities against various human cell lines, including colon cancer cells (HCT-116), breast cancer cells (MDA-MB-231), lung cancer cells (A549), gastric cancer cells (SGC-7901), and normal embryonic kidney cells (HEK-293) were assessed in vitro. Compared with the clinical cisplatin, most of the synthesized complexes possessed significantly higher degrees of anticancer activity and selectivity, giving a selectivity index of up to 71.3. The structure-activity relationship study revealed that the anticancer performance of these bismuth(III) species depends on the factors of coordination environment surrounding the metal center, such as coordination number, coordination bonding strength, lone 6s2 electron pair stereoactivity. The Annexin V-FITC/PI double staining assay results suggested that the coordination environment-dependent cytotoxicity is ascribable to apoptosis. Western blot analysis confirmed the proposal, as evidenced by the down-regulating level of Bcl-2 and the activation of caspase-3. Furthermore, the representative complexes Bi1, Bi4, Bi6, and Bi8 exhibited relatively lower inhibitory efficiency on human ovarian cancer cells (A2780) than on its cisplatin-resistant daughter cells (A2780/cis), thus demonstrating that such compounds are capable of circumventing the cisplatin-induced resistance. This investigation elucidated the excellent anticancer performance of C,O-coordinated bismuth(III) complexes and established the correlation between cytotoxic activity and coordination chemistry, which provides a practical basis for in-depth designing and developing bismuth-based chemotherapeutics.

Binding, Sensing, And Transporting Anions with Pnictogen Bonds: The Case of Organoantimony Lewis Acids

Motivated by the discovery of main group Lewis acids that could compete or possibly outperform the ubiquitous organoboranes, several groups, including ours, have engaged in the chemistry of Lewis acidic organoantimony compounds as new platforms for anion capture, sensing, and transport. Principal to this approach are the intrinsically elevated Lewis acidic properties of antimony, which greatly favor the addition of halide anions to this group 15 element. The introduction of organic substituents to the antimony center and its oxidation from the + III to the + V state provide for tunable Lewis acidity and a breadth of applications in supramolecular chemistry and catalysis. The performances of these antimony-based Lewis acids in the domain of anion sensing in aqueous media illustrate the favorable attributes of antimony as a central element. At the same time, recent advances in anion binding catalysis and anion transport across phospholipid membranes speak to the numerous opportunities that lie ahead in the chemistry of these unique main group compounds.

Four-membered C^N chelation in main-group organometallic chemistry

Main-group organometallic compounds containing four-membered C^N chelating rings are being studied because of the interest in harnessing the enhanced reactivity of such compounds which arises as a result of the release of steric strain. In this article, we have reviewed the literature on these systems. This review is organised in terms of the types of ligand systems that allow the assembly of such compounds, viz., compounds containing aliphatic amine motifs, pyridine motifs and aniline motifs. In addition to a discussion on the synthesis and structure, we also examine the reactivity and applications of the main-group element compounds involved. In particular, applications involving H₂ activation, carbonyl activation, olefin reduction, C-H activation, hydroalumination, cyanamide oligomerisation, borylation of olefins and heteroarenes, isocyanate activation and C-C bond activation are discussed.

Competition between Intra and Intermolecular Pnicogen Bonds. Complexes between Naphthalene Derivatives and Neutral or Anionic Bases

The PnF 2 (Pn=P,As,Sb,Bi) on a naphthalene scaffold can engage in an internal pnicogen Pn···N bond (PnB) with a NH 2 group placed close to it on the adjoining ring. An approaching neutral NH 3 molecule can engage in a second PnB with the central Pn, which tends to weaken the intramolecular bond. The presence of the latter in turn weakens the intermolecular PnB with respect to that formed in its absence. Replacement of the external NH 3 by a CN - anion causes a fundamental change in the bonding pattern, producing a fourth covalent bond with Pn, which rearranges into a trigonal bipyramidal motif. This addition disrupts the internal Pn···N pnicogen bond, recasting the PnF 2 ···NH 2 interaction into a NH···F H-bond.

Synthetic and Structural Study of peri-Substituted Phosphine-Arsines

A series of phosphorus-arsenic peri-substituted acenaphthene species have been isolated and fully characterised, including single crystal X-ray diffraction. Reactions of EBr3 (E = P, As) with iPr2PAcenapLi (Acenap = acenaphthene-5,6-diyl) afforded the thermally stable peri-substitution supported donor-acceptor complexes, iPr2PAcenapEBr23 and 4. Both complexes show a strong P→E dative interaction, as observed by X-ray crystallography and 31P NMR spectroscopy. DFT calculations indicated the unusual As∙∙∙As contact (3.50 Å) observed in the solid state structure of 4 results from dispersion forces rather than metallic interactions. Incorporation of the excess AsBr3 in the crystal structure of 3 promotes the formation of the ion separated species [iPr2PAcenapAsBr]+Br- 5. A decomposition product 6 containing the rare [As6Br8]2- heterocubane dianion was isolated and characterised crystallographically. The reaction between iPr2PAcenapLi and EtAsI2 afforded tertiary arsine (BrAcenap)2AsEt 7, which was subsequently lithiated and reacted with PhPCl2 and Ph2PCl to afford cyclic PhP(Acenap)2AsEt 8 and acyclic EtAs(AcenapPPh2)2 9.

Structural Evidence for Pnictogen-Centered Lewis Acidity in Cationic Platinum-Stibine Complexes Featuring Pendent Amino or Ammonium Groups

As part of our continuing interest in the chemistry of cationic antimony Lewis acids as ligands for late transition metals, we have now investigated the synthesis of platinum complexes featuring a triarylstibine ligand substituted by an o-[(dimethylamino)methyl]phenyl group referred to as Ar^N. More specifically, we describe the synthesis of the amino stibine ligand Ph₂SbAr^N (L) and its platinum dichloride complex [LPtCl]Cl which exists as a chloride salt and which shows weak coordination of the amino group to the antimony center. We also report the conversion of [LPtCl]Cl into a tricationic complex [LHPt(SMe₂)]³⁺ which has been isolated as a tris-triflate salt after reaction of [LPtCl]Cl with SMe₂, HOTf and AgOTf. Finally, we show that [LHPt(SMe₂)][OTf]₃ acts as a catalyst for the cyclization of 2-allyl-2-(2-propynyl)malonate.

On the ability of pnicogen atoms to engage in both σ and π-hole complexes. Heterodimers of ZF2C6H5 (Z = P, As, Sb, Bi) and NH3

When bound to a pair of F atoms and a phenyl ring, a pyramidal pnicogen (Z) atom can form a pnicogen bond wherein an NH₃ base lies opposite one F atom. In addition to this σ-hole complex, the ZF₂C₆H₅ molecule can distort in such a way that the NH₃ approaches on the opposite side to the lone pair on Z, where there is a so-called π-hole. The interaction energies of these π-hole dimers are roughly 30 kcal/mol, much larger than the equivalent quantities for the σ-hole complexes, which are only 4-13 kcal/mol. On the other hand, this large interaction energy is countered by the considerable deformation energy required for the Lewis acid to adopt the geometry necessary to form the π-hole complex. The overall energetics of the complexation reaction are thus more exothermic for the σ-hole dimers than for the π-hole dimers.

Digging the Sigma-Hole of Organoantimony Lewis Acids by Oxidation

The development of group 15 Lewis acids is an area of active investigation that has led to numerous advances in anion sensing and catalysis. While phosphorus has drawn considerable attention, emerging research shows that organoantimony(III) reagents may also act as potent Lewis acids. Comparison of the properties of SbPh₃ , Sb(C₆ F₅ )₃ , and SbAr^F ₃ with those of their tetrachlorocatecholate analogues SbPh₃ Cat, Sb(C₆ F₅ )₃ Cat, and SbAr^F ₃ Cat (Cat=o-O₂ C₆ Cl₄ , Ar^F =3,5-(CF₃ )₂ C₆ H₃ ) demonstrates that the Lewis acidity of electron deficient organoantimony(III) reagents can be readily enhanced by oxidation to the +V state-as verified by binding studies, organic reaction catalysis, and computational studies. The results are rationalized by explaining that oxidation of the antimony center leads to a lowering of the accepting σ* orbital and a deeper carving of the associated σ-hole.

Understanding the Origin of Phosphorescence in Bismoles: A Synthetic and Computational Study

A series of bismuth heterocycles, termed bismoles, were synthesized via the efficient metallacycle transfer (Bi/Zr exchange) involving readily accessible zirconacycles. The luminescence properties of three structurally distinct bismoles were explored in detail via time-integrated and time-resolved photoluminescence spectroscopy using ultrafast laser excitation. Moreover, time-dependent density functional theory computations were used to interpret the nature of fluorescence versus phosphorescence in these bismuth-containing heterocycles and to guide the future preparation of luminescent materials containing heavy inorganic elements. Specifically, orbital character at bismuth within excited states is an important factor for achieving enhanced spin-orbit coupling and to promote phosphorescence. The low aromaticity of the bismole rings was demonstrated by formation of a CuCl π-complex, and the nature of the alkene-CuCl interaction was probed by real-space bonding indicators derived from Atoms-In-Molecules, the Electron Localizability Indicator, and the Non-Covalent Interaction index; such tools are of great value in interpreting nonstandard bonding environments within inorganic compounds.

Hypervalent diorganoantimony(iii) fluorides via diorganoantimony(iii) cations – a general method of synthesis

A new general synthesis method for hypervalent diorganoantimony(iii) fluorides with pendant arm ligands is ​ based on treatment with [Bu₄N]F·3H₂O of ​ cationic species e.g. [{2-(2′,6′-ⁱPr₂C₆H₃NCH)C₆H₄}₂Sb]⁺[PF₆]⁻ or [{2-(Me₂NCH₂)C₆H₄}PhSb]⁺[SbF₆]⁻.

Synthesis and structure of N,C-chelated organoantimony(v) and organobismuth(v) compounds

The reaction of N,C-intramolecularly coordinated organoantimony(iii) and organobismuth(iii) compounds LMCl2 (M = Sb () or Bi () and L = [o-(CH[double bond, length as m-dash]N-2,6-iPr2C6H3)C6H4]) with phenyllithium in a 1 : 1 or 1 : 2 molar ratio gave compounds LM(Ph)Cl (M = Sb () or Bi ()) and LMPh2 (M = Sb () or Bi ()) in moderate to good yields. Compound could also be prepared by the treatment of the lithium compound LLi with in situ prepared PhSbCl2. Oxidation of the antimony(iii) compounds , and with one equivalent of SO2Cl2 proceeded smoothly with formation of organoantimony(v) compounds LSbCl4 (), LSb(Ph)Cl3 () and LSbPh2Cl2 () in nearly quantitative yields. Compounds are yellowish solids that are stable for a long time even in the presence of air. In contrast, only organobismuth(iii) compounds and could be successfully oxidized using SO2Cl2 to give compounds LBi(Ph)Cl3 () and LBiPh2Cl2 (). Compound is stable, but compound readily decomposed in solution and could not be isolated and stored for a longer period. All attempts to prepare compound LBiCl4 by the oxidation of with SO2Cl2 failed and resulted only in a mixture of products. All studied compounds were characterized by electrospray ionization (ESI) mass spectrometry, and (1)H and (13)C NMR spectroscopy. The molecular structures of , and were unambiguously established using single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis.

Palladium(ii) complexes with chiral organoantimony(iii) ligands. Solution behaviour and solid state structures

The stibines R(Ph)SbCl (1) and R(Mes)₂Sb (2) (R = 2-Me₂NCH₂C₆H₄) were used to obtain [Me₂NHCH₂C₆H₅]⁺[PdCl₃{SbCl(Ph)R}]^¬ (3) and [PdCl₂{Sb(Mes)2R-N,Sb}] (4). While in 3 the intramolecular N→Sb interaction is preserved, in compound 4 the stibine 2 acts as a (N,Sb)-chelating ligand.

Chloridobis{2-[(dimethyl-amino)-meth-yl]phen-yl}anti-mony(III)

In the title compound, [Sb(C(9)H(12)N)(2)Cl], the Sb atom adopts a Ψ-trigonal-bipyramidal geometry. The two 2-[(dimethyl-amino)-methyl]-phenyl ligands are coordinated asymmetrically to the Sb atom. The carbon atoms of one of the ligands are disordered over sets of sites with equal occupancy, resulting in two conformational isomers in the crystal. The Sb-C and Sb-N distances in the ordered ligand are: 2.153 (4) and 3.326 (5) Å, respectively. The corresponding distances in the disordered ligand are: 2.103 (5)/2.188 (5) and 2.454 (3) Å, respectively. The structure displays intra-molecular C-H⋯Cl hydrogen bonding.

Preparation and properties of cyclic and open-chain Sb/N-donor ligands

The preparations of both open-chain and cyclic mixed-donor Sb/N ligands, MeN(CH2-2-C6H4)2SbMe (1), MeN(CH2-2-C6H4SbMe2)2 (2), CH2{CH2N(Me)CH2-2-C6H4SbMe2}2 (3) and CH2{CH2N(Me)CH2-2-C6H4}2SbMe (4), are described via reaction of chlorostibines with dilithio-reagents, and their spectroscopic properties established. Air-stable stibonium derivatives of (3) and (4) have been isolated by treatment of the compounds with excess MeI, which leads to quaternisation at the Sb atoms exclusively. A crystal structure of a bis(stibonium) derivative of (3), [CH2{CH2N(Me)CH2-2-C6H4SbMe3}2]I2, reveals hypervalency at Sb through long-range Sb...N interactions (ca. 2.87 A), giving pseudo-five-membered rings fused to the aromatic rings, and distorted trigonal bipyramidal coordination at Sb. The coordinating properties of compounds (1) to (4) have been investigated through their reactions with Cu(I), Mn(I), Mo(0) and Pt(IV) reagents, and for (1) and (4) by reaction with Fe(0), giving [Fe(CO)4(L)]. The spectroscopic data (IR, 1H, 13C{1H}, 55Mn, 63Cu, 95Mo and 195Pt NMR), mass spectrometry and microanalyses for this series of complexes confirm that coordination occurs via the Sb donor atoms in all cases, with N-coordination only present in fac-[Mn(CO)3(2)](CF3SO3). Crystal structures of [Cu(2)2]BF4, [Mo(CO)4(2)] and [PtMe3I(2)] confirm the coordination modes, showing (2) functioning as a wide-angle bidentate distibine. The structures also show the amine N-donor atoms in the complexes are involved in a hypervalent SbN interaction (ca. 3.0 A) with one of the coordinated Sb atoms in each ligand, leading to significant differences in the conformations of the carbon backbones linking the Sb and N atoms. Reaction of Na3[RhCl6].12H2O with one mol equiv. of (2), (3) or (4) leads to the bis-ligand complex [RhCl2(2)2]Cl and the 1 : 1 Rh : L complexes [RhCl2(3)]Cl and [RhCl3(4)], both of which involve coordination via the Sb and N donor atoms.
