Abstract
2-((4-Methoxyphenoxy) carbonyl) benzoic acid, 2-(1-methoxyvinyl) benzoic acid and their rare earth complexes LnL(2)(OH).3H(2)O (Ln=La, Eu, Tb) were synthesized and characterized by means of elemental analysis, FTIR, (1)H NMR, UV and luminescence spectroscopy. The FTIR and (1)H NMR results show that the carboxylic groups in the complexes coordinated to the rare earth ions in the form of one dentate, and the ester carboxylic groups have taken part in the coordination. Among these complexes, Eu(III) complexes and Tb(III) complexes exhibit characteristic fluorescence with comparatively high brightness and good monochromaticity, which indicated that the ligands of HL(I) and HL(II) are good organic chromophore to absorb and transfer energy to metal ions.

Abstract
A new heterometallic 4f-3d inorganic-organic metal-nicotinic acid complex [Gd(C6NO2H5)3(H2O)2] n(1.5 nZnCl4) nH2O, (1), has been synthesised via hydrothermal reaction and structurally characterised. Complex 1 crystallises in the space group P21/ c of the monoclinic system with four formula units in a cell: a = 9.524(2), b = 20.888(4), c = 16.078(3) Å β = 104.745(2)°, V= 3093.2(9) Å3, C18H21Cl6GdN3O9Zn1.50, M r=891.38 g/mol, D c= 1.914 g/cm3, S = 0.997, μ(MoKα) = 3.844 mm1, F(000) = 1732, R = 0.0493 and wR = 0.1350. Complex 1 is characteristic of a one-dimensional polycationic chain-like structure. Photoluminescent investigation shows that the title complex displays strong emission in the blue region, which is attributed to the intraligand π–π* transition of nicotinic ligands. Optical absorption spectra of 1 reveal the presence of a wide optical bandgap of 3.73 eV.

Abstract
Eighteen trinuclear NiII2LnIII complexes of 2,6-di(acetoacetyl)pyridine (H2L) (Ln=La-Lu except for Pm) were prepared by a "one-pot reaction" of H2L, Ni(NO3)2.6H2O, and Ln(NO3)3.nH2O in methanol. X-ray crystallographic studies indicate that two L2- ligands sandwich two NiII ions with the terminal 1,3-diketonate sites and one LnIII ion with the central 2,6-diacylpyridine site, forming the trinuclear [Ni2Ln(L)2] core of a linear NiLnNi structure. The terminal Ni assumes a six-coordinate geometry together with methanol or water molecules, and the central Ln assumes a 10-coordinate geometry together with two or three nitrate ions. The [Ni2Ln(L)2] core is essentially coplanar for large Ln ions (La, Ce, Pr, Nd) but shows a distortion with respect to the two L2- ligands for smaller Ln ions. Magnetic studies for the Ni2Ln complexes of diamagnetic LaIII and LuIII indicate an antiferromagnetic interaction between the terminal NiII ions. A magnetic analysis of the Ni2Gd complex based on the isotropic Heisenberg model indicates a ferromagnetic interaction between the adjacent NiII and GdIII ions and an antiferromagnetic interaction between the terminal NiII ions. The magnetic properties of other Ni2Ln complexes were studied on the basis of a numerical approach with the Ni2La complex and analogous Zn2Ln complexes, and they indicated that the NiII-LnIII interaction is weakly antiferromagnetic for Ln=Ce, Pr, and Nd and ferromagnetic for Ln=Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, and Er.

Abstract
Four new heterometallic glutarate coordination polymers, [Eu2M(H2O)4][O2C(CH2)3CO2]4.2H2O (M = Mn (1), Fe (2), Co (3) and Ni (4)) have been obtained under hydrothermal synthesis. The single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses showed that they have two-dimensional frameworks based on the linear polyhedral chains consisting of two nine-coordinated Eu(III)O9 and a six-coordinated M(II)O6. These 1-D MO6-Eu2O16 chains are cross-linked by glutarate ligands as an interchain pillared architecture, whose conformations vary depending upon the transition metals. The magnetic behavior of the compounds show a weak antiferromagnetic interaction, in which shielding of the 4f electrons by the outer shell electrons effectively precludes significant coupling interactions between the Eu-4f electrons and transition metal (M)-3d electrons.

Abstract
A series of trinuclear Cu(II)Ln(III)Cu(II) complexes with the bridging ligand 2,6-di(acetoacetyl)pyridine have been prepared by one-pot reaction with Cu(NO(3))(2).3H(2)O and Ln(NO(3))(3).nH(2)O in methanol. X-ray crystallographic studies for all the complexes indicate that two L(2)(-) ligands selectively sandwich two Cu(II) ions with the 1,3-diketonate entities and one Ln(III) ion with the 2,6-acetylpyridine entity to form a trinuclear CuLnCu core bridged by the enolate oxygen atoms. Cryomagnetic properties of the complexes are studied with respect to the electronic structure of the Ln ion.

Abstract
A series of cyano-bridged heterotrimetallic complexes [CuL](2)Ln(H(2)O)(2)M(CN)(6).7H(2)O have been synthesized by the reactions of CuL (L(2)(-) = dianion of 1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotradecane-2,3-dione), Ln(3+) (Ln = Gd or La), and [M(CN)(6)](3)(-) (M = Co, Fe, or Cr). X-ray diffraction analysis reveals that these complexes are isostructural and have a novel chain structure. The Ln(3+) ion is eight-coordinated by six oxygen atoms of two CuL and two water molecules and two nitrogen atoms of the bridging cyano ligands of two [M(CN)(6)](3)(-), while the [M(CN)(6)](3)(-) anion connects two Ln(3+) using two trans-CN(-) ligands giving rise to a chainlike structure. In the chain, every CuL group tilts toward the CN(-) ligand of adjacent [M(CN)(6)](3)(-) with the Cu-N(cyano) contacts ranging from 2.864(6) to 2.930(6) A. Magnetic studies on the CuGdCo complex (1) indicate the presence of ferromagnetic coupling between Cu(II) and Gd(III). The CuLaCr (5) and CuLaFe (2) complexes exhibit ferromagnetic interaction between paramagnetic Cu(II) and Cr(III)/Fe(III) ions through the weak cyano bridges (Cu-N(cyano) = 2.930(6) A for 2). A global ferromagnetic interaction is operative in the CuGdFe complex (3) with the concurrence of dominant ferromagnetic Cu(II)-Gd(III) and minor antiferromagnetic Gd(III)-Fe(III) as well as the ferromagnetic Cu(II)-Fe(III) interaction. For the CuGdCr complex (4), an overall antiferromagnetic behavior was observed, which is attributed to the presence of dominant antiferromagnetic Cr(III)-Gd(III) coupling and the minor ferromagnetic Cu(II)-Gd(III) and Cu(II)-Cr(III) interaction. Moreover, a spin frustration phenomenon was found in complex 4, which results from the ferro-ferro-antiferromagnetic exchanges in the trigonal Cu-Gd-Cr units. The magnetic susceptibilities of these complexes were simulated using suitable models. The magneto-structural correlation was investigated. These complexes did not show a magnetic phase transition down to 1.8 K.

Abstract
Five novel heptanuclear trigonal-prismatic polyhedra, Na4[PrNi6(Gly)9(mu 3-OH)3(H2O)6].(ClO4)7 (1), Na2[PrNi6(Gly)8(mu 3-OH)3(mu 2-OH2)-(H2O)6].(ClO4)6.(H2O)2 (2), Na[DyNi6(Gly)7(mu 3-OH)3(mu 2-OH2)2(H2O)6].(ClO4)6.H2O (3), [SmNi6(Gly)6-(mu 3-OH)3Cl3(H2O)6].Cl3.(H2O)9 (4), and [ErNi6(Gly)6(mu 3-OH)3Cl3(H2O)6].Cl3.(H2O)9 (5), were synthesized through self-assembly and characterized by X-ray structure analysis. Complex 1 crystallizes in the trigonal P3 space group (a = b = 18.1121(2), c = 11.987(0) A, and Z = 2). Complex 2 belongs to the triclinic P1 space group (a = 16.0145(3), b = 20.58650(10), c = 20.8452(3) A, alpha = 78.0590(10), beta = 67.9200(10), gamma = 68.1540(10) degrees, and Z = 4). Complex 3 belongs to the monoclinic P2(1)/m space group (a = 14.9863(3), b = 13.533, c = 15.6171(3) A, beta = 116.8970(10) degrees, and Z = 2). Complexes 4 and 5 are isomorphous (4: trigonal, P3; a = b = 11.8661(4), c = 18.2034(10) A, Z = 2; 5: a = b = 11.9001(5), c = 18.1229(11) A, Z = 2). A Ln3+ ion is in the center of the prism formed by six nickel atoms. It coordinates to nine oxygen atoms. Its coordination polyhedron may be best described as a tricapped trigonal prism. The five complexes all have a core of [LnNi6(Gly)6-(mu 3-OH)3(H2O)6]6+ and were obtained through the edge-ligand exchange of the three mu 2-OH2 ligands of [LnNi6(Gly)6-(mu 3-OH)3(H2O)6(mu 2-OH2)3]6+ partly or wholly by glycine or Cl-. Magnetic measurements reveal that 1 and 4 exhibit antiferromagnetic interaction, while 5 exhibits a ferromagnetic interaction.

Abstract
Two new nonanuclear lanthanide(III)-copper(II) complexes of macrocyclic oxamide [NaPr(2)(CuL)(6)(H(2)O)(6)](ClO(4))(6)Cl small middle dot6H(2)O (1) and [NaNd(2)(CuL)(6)(H(2)O)(6)](ClO(4))(6)Cl small middle dot8H(2)O (2) have been synthesized and characterized by means of elemental analysis, IR, and electronic spectra, where L = 1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotradecanne-2,3-dione. The crystal structures of the two complexes have been determined. The structures of 1 and 2 consist of nonanuclear cations, perchlorate and chloride anions, and water molecules. In the two complexes, each copper(II) ion is connected to lanthanide(III) ion via the exo-cis oxygen atoms of the oxamido macrocyclic ligands, resulting in a tetranuclear subunit. The sodium ion links two tetranuclear subunits via the exo oxygen atoms of the oxamido macrocyclic ligands which results in a novel nonanuclear complex. The magnetic properties of the two complexes have been investigated. Preliminary treatment of the magnetic data by considering Ln(III) as free ion cannot give reasonable results, and accurate models involving both the orbital contribution and ligand field effect have to be developed.

Abstract
Numerous compounds in which a paramagnetic LnIII ion is in an exchange interaction with a second spin carrier, such as a transition metal ion or an organic radical, have been described. However, except for GdIII, very little has been reported about the magnitude of the interactions. Indeed, for these ions both the ligand-field effects and the exchange interactions between the magnetic centers become relevant in the same temperature range; this makes the analysis of the magnetic behavior of such compounds more difficult. In this study, quantitative analyses of the thermal variations of the static isothermal initial magnetic susceptibility measured on powdered samples of the [Ln(NO3)3-[organic radical]2] (Ln = DyIII and HoIII) compounds were performed. The ligand-field effects on the Ln ions were taken into account, and the exchange interactions within a molecule were treated exactly within an appropriate Racah formalism. Values of the intramolecular [Ln-aminoxyl radical] exchange parameter have thus been rigorously deduced for both the Dy Kramers and Ho non-Kramers ion-based compounds. Ferromagnetic [Ln-radical] interactions are found for both the Dy and Ho derivatives with J = 8 cm(-1) and J = 4.5 cm(-1), respectively.

Abstract
The hydrothermal reaction of Ln2O3 (Ln = Er, Gd, and Sm), pyridine-2,5-dicarboxylic acid (H2pydc), and Cu(II) reagents (CuO, Cu(OAc)2-2H2O, or CuCl2-2H2O) with a mole ratio of 1:2:4 resulted in the formation of six polymeric Cu(II)-Ln(III) complexes, [(Ln2Cu3(pydc)6(H2O)12)-4H2O]n (Ln = Er (1); Ln = Gd (2)), [(Ln4Cu2(pydc)8(H2O)12)-4H2O]n (Ln = Sm (3); Ln = Gd (4); Ln = Er (5)), and [(Gd2Cu2(pydc)4(H2O)8)-Cu(pydc)2-12H2O]n (6). 1 and 2 are isomorphous and crystallize in triclinic space group Ponebar. Compounds 3-5 are isomorphous and crystallize in monoclinic space group P2(1)/c. Compound 6 crystallizes in triclinic space group Ponebar. Complexes 1 and 2 have one-dimensional zigzag chain structures and compounds 3-5 display three-dimensional wavelike polymeric structures, while 6 has an infinite sandwich-type structure. The different structures of the complexes are induced by the different forms of Cu(II) reagents; the reactions of Cu(OAc)2-2H2O yield high Cu/Ln ratio products 1, 2, and 6, while the reactions of CuO or CuCl2-2H2O/2,2'-bipyridine results in low Cu/Ln ratio compounds 3-5. Temperature-dependent magnetic susceptibilities for 2, 4, and 5 were studied, and the thermal stabilities of complexes 2 and 4 were examined.
