Syntheses and Structures of Mixed-Metal Sulfido Clusters Containing Incomplete Cubane-Type M2M‘S4 and Cubane-Type M2M‘2S4 Cores (M = Mo, W; M‘ = Rh, Ir)

Dibromidobis(N,N-diethyl-dithio-carbamato-κS,S')tetra-μ(3)-sulfido-dicopper(I)dimolybdenum(V) isopropanol disolvate

The mol­ecule of the title compound, [Cu₂Mo₂Br₂(C₇H₁₄NS₂)₂S₄]·2C₃H₇OH, comprises one [(i-C₃H₇)₂NCS₂]₂Mo₂S₄ unit and two CuBr units held together by six Cu—μ₃-S bonds, thus forming a cubane-like Mo₂S₄Cu₂ core. Intramolecular O—H⋯S hydrogen bonds may stabilize the structure. Two methyl groups of the two independent solvent molecules are disordered over two positions and were refined with occupancies of 0.733 (12) and 0.267 (12).

Synthesis and Characterization of Heterometallic Clusters (Ir2Rh, Ir2W, Rh3) Containing 1,2-Dicarba-closo-dodecaborane(12)-1,2-dithiolate Chelate Ligands, [(B10H10)C2S2]2−

The 16-electron half-sandwich complex [Cp*Ir[S2C2(B10H10)]] (Cp* = eta5-C5Me5) (1a) reacts with [[Rh(cod)(mu-Cl)]2] (cod = cycloocta-1,5-diene, C8H12) in different molar ratios to give three products, [[Cp*Ir[S2C2(B10H9)]]Rh(cod)] (2), trans-[[Cp*Ir[S2C2(B10H9)]]Rh[[S2C2(B10H10)]IrCp*]] (3), and [Rh2(cod)2[(mu-SH)(mu-SC)(CH)(B10H10)]] (4). Complex 3 contains an Ir2Rh backbone with two different Ir-Rh bonds (3.003(3) and 2.685(3) angstroms). The dinuclear complex 2 reacts with the mononuclear 16-electron complex 1a to give 3 in refluxing toluene. Reaction of 1a with [W(CO)3(py)3] (py = C5H5N) in the presence of BF3.EtO2 leads to the trinuclear cluster [[Cp*Ir[S2C2(B10H10)]]2W(CO)2] (5) together with [[Cp*Ir(CO)[S2C2(B10H10)]]W(CO)5] (6), and [Cp*Ir(CO)[S2C2(B10H10)]] (7). Analogous reactions of [Cp*Rh[S2C2(B10H10)]] (1 b) with [[Rh(cod)(mu-Cl)]2] were investigated and two complexes cis-[[Cp*Rh[S2C2(B10H10)]]2Rh] (8) and trans-[[Cp*Rh[S2C2(B10H10)]]2Rh] (9) were obtained. In refluxing THF solution, the cisoid 8 is converted in more than 95 % yield to the transoid 9. All new complexes 2-9 were characterized by NMR spectroscopy (1H, 11B NMR) and X-ray diffraction structural analyses are reported for complexes 2-5, 8, and 9.

Synthesis and Characterization of a Twin Cubane-Type Molybdenum−Rhodium−Sulfur Cluster, [{Mo3RhCp*S4(H2O)7(O)}2]8+. X-ray Structure of [{Mo3RhCp*S4(H2O)7(O)}2](CH3C6H4SO3)8·14H2O

The reaction of [Mo(3)S(4)(H(2)O)(9)](4+) (1) with [(CpRhCl(2))(2)] afforded a novel rhodium-molybdenum cluster, [{Mo(3)RhCpS(4)(H(2)O)(7)(O)}(2)](8+) (2). X-ray structure analysis of [2](pts)(8).14H(2)O (pts(-) = CH(3)C(6)H(4)SO(3)(-)) has revealed the existence of a new oxo-bridged twin cubane-type core, (Mo(3)RhCpS(4))(2)(O)(2). The high affinity of the CpRh group for sulfur atoms in 1 seems to be the main driving force for this reaction. The strong Lewis acidity of the CpRh group in intermediate A, [Mo(3)RhCpS(4)(H(2)O)(9)](6+), caused a release of proton from one of the water molecules attached to the molybdenum atoms to give intermediate B, [Mo(3)RhCpS(4)(H(2)O)(8)(OH)](5+). The elimination of two water molecules from two intermediate B molecules, followed by the deprotonation reaction of hydroxo bridges, generated the twin cubane-type cluster 2. The formal oxidation states of rhodium and molybdenum atoms are the same before and after the reaction (i.e., Mo(IV)(3), Rh(III)). The Mo-O-Mo moieties in [2](pts)(8).14H(2)O are nearly linear with a bond angle of 164.3(3) degrees, and the basicity of the bridging oxygen atoms seems to be weak. For this reason, protonation at the bridging oxygen atoms does not occur even in a strongly acidic aqueous solution. The binding energy values of Mo 3d(5/2), Rh 3d(5/2), and C 1s obtained from X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements for [2](pts)(8).14H(2)O are 229.8, 309.3, and 285 eV, respectively. The XPS measurements on the Rh 3d(5/2) binding energy indicate that the oxidation state of Rh is 3+. The binding energy of Mo 3d(5/2) (229.8 eV) compares with that observed for [1](pts)(4).7H(2)O (230.7 eV, Mo 3d(5/2)). A lower energy shift (0.9 eV) is observed in the binding energy of Mo 3d(5/2) for [2](pts)(8).14H(2)O. This energy shift may correspond to the coordination of an oxygen atom having a negative charge to the molybdenum atom.

Unique Oxidative Metal−Metal Bond Formation of Linearly Aligned Tetranuclear Rh−Mo−Mo−Rh Clusters

Reaction of Mo2(pyphos)4 (1) with [RhCl(CO)2]2 followed by treatment of excess amounts of tBuNC resulted in the clean formation of [Mo2Rh2(tBuNC)4(pyphos)4](X)2 (4a; X = Cl). The X-ray diffraction study as well as spectroscopic analyses of 4c (X = BPh4) implied that there is no direct sigma-bonding interaction between each Rh(I) atom and the Mo2 core. Each Rh(I) atom in 4 can be oxidized concurrently by 2 equiv of [Cp2Fe]PF6 to afford [Mo2Rh2(Cl)2(tBuNC)4(pyphos)4](PF6)2 (5) along with the formation of two Mo-Rh(II) single bonds and the reduction of the bond orders of the Mo-Mo moiety.

Azido- or hydroxyl-capped half-cubanes containing Cp*Rh fragments: [Cp*3Rh3(μ-X)3(μ3-X)]2+ (X− = OH−or N3−)

Treatment of [Cp*Rh(H(2)O)(3)](OTf)(2) (1) with Me(3)SiNH-t-Bu in acetone gave a hydroxyl-capped half-cubane [Cp*(3)Rh(3)(mu-OH)(3)(mu(3)-OH)](OTf)(3)(t-BuNH(3)) (2). Slow diffusion of Me(3)SiN(3) in diethyl ether into compound in acetone produced an azido-capped half-cubane [Cp*(3)Rh(3)(mu-N(3))(3)(mu(3)-N(3))](OTf)(2) (3). On the other hand, treating 1 with Me(3)SiN(3) in acetone gave an azido-bridged, dinuclear rhodium(III) complex [Cp*Rh(mu-N(3))(OH(2))](2)(OTf)(2) (4). Complexes 2 and 3 represent the first azido- or hydroxyl-capped, incomplete cubane-type Rh clusters. Under appropriate conditions, complexes 2 and 3 could be converted to complex 4. The structures of all products were determined by X-ray diffraction.

Cubane-type heterometallic sulfido clusters: incorporation of two metal fragments into a dinuclear ReS(mu-S)2ReS core affording bimetallic M2Re2(mu 3-S)4 clusters (M = Ru, Pt, Cu) or trimetallic MM'Re2(mu 3-S)4 clusters via incomplete cubane-type MRe2(mu 3-S)(mu 2-S)3 intermediates (M = Ru, Rh, Ir; M' = Mo, W, Pd, Ru, Rh)

Reactions of a dirhenium tetra(sulfido) complex [PPh(4)](2)[ReS(L)(mu-S)(2)ReS(L)] (L = S(2)C(2)(SiMe(3))(2)) with a series of group 8-11 metal complexes in MeCN at room temperature afforded either the cubane-type clusters [M(2)(ReL)(2)(mu(3)-S)(4)] (M = CpRu (2), PtMe(3), Cu(PPh(3)) (4); Cp = eta(5)-C(5)Me(5)) or the incomplete cubane-type clusters [M(ReL)(2)(mu(3)-S)(mu(2)-S)(3)] (M = (eta(6)-C(6)HMe(5))Ru (5), CpRh (6), CpIr (7)), depending on the nature of the metal complexes added. It has also been disclosed that the latter incomplete cubane-type clusters can serve as the good precursors to the trimetallic cubane-type clusters still poorly precedented. Thus, treatment of 5-7 with a range of metal complexes in THF at room temperature resulted in the formation of novel trimetallic cubane-type clusters, including the neutral clusters [[(eta(6)-C(6)HMe(5))Ru][W(CO)(3)](ReL)(2)(mu(3)-S)(4)], [(CpM)[W(CO)(3)](ReL)(2)(mu(3)-S)(4)] (M = Rh, Ir), [(Cp*Ir)[Mo(CO)(3)](ReL)(2)(mu(3)-S)(4)], [[(eta(6)-C(6)HMe(5))Ru][Pd(PPh(3))](ReL)(2)(mu(3)-S)(4)], and [(Cp*Ir)[Pd(PPh(3))](ReL)(2)(mu(3)-S)(4)] (13) along with the cationic clusters [(Cp*Ir)(CpRu)(ReL)(2)(mu(3)-S)(4)][PF(6)] (14) and [(Cp*Ir)[Rh(cod)](ReL)(2)(mu(3)-S)(4)][PF(6)] (cod = 1,5-cyclooctadiene). The X-ray analyses have been carried out for 2, 4, 7, 13, and the SbF(6) analogue of 14 (14') to confirm their bimetallic cubane-type, bimetallic incomplete cubane-type, or trimetallic cubane-type structures. Fluxional behavior of the incomplete cubane-type and trimetallic cubane-type clusters in solutions has been demonstrated by the variable-temperature (1)H NMR studies, which is ascribable to both the metal-metal bond migration in the cluster cores and the pseudorotation of the dithiolene ligand bonded to the square pyramidal Re centers, where the temperatures at which these processes proceed have been found to depend upon the nature of the metal centers included in the cluster cores.

Heterobimetallic, cubane-like Mo(3)S(4)M' cluster cores containing the noble metals M' = Ru, Os, Rh, Ir. Unprecedented tri(mu-carbonyl) bridge between ruthenium atoms in [(eta(5)-Cp')(3)Mo(3)S(4)Ru)2(mu-CO)3]2+

Reaction of the methylcyclopentadienyl (Cp') cluster compound [(eta(5)-Cp')(3)Mo(3)S(4)][pts] (pts = p-toluenesulfonate) with noble metal alkene complexes resulted in the formation of four new heterobimetallic cubane-like Mo(3)S(4)M' cluster cores (M' = Ru, Os, Rh, Ir). Thus, reaction with [(1,5-cod)Ru(CO)(3)] or [(1,3-cod)Os(CO)(3)] (cod = cyclooctadiene) afforded [(eta(5)-Cp')(3)Mo(3)S(4)M'(CO)(2)][pts] (M' = Ru: [1][pts]; M' = Os: [2][pts]). When [1][pts] was kept in CH(2)Cl(2)/pentane solution, partial loss of carbonyl ligands occurred and the carbonyl-bridged dicubane cluster [((eta(5)-Cp')(3)Mo(3)S(4)Ru)(2)(mu-CO)(3)][pts](2) was isolated. An X-ray crystal structure revealed the presence of the hitherto unobserved Ru(mu-CO)(3)Ru structural element. The formation of cluster compounds containing Mo(3)S(4)Rh and Mo(3)S(4)Ir cores was achieved in boiling methanol by reacting [(eta(5)-Cp')(3)Mo(3)S(4)][pts] with [M'Cl(cyclooctene)(2)](2) (M' = Rh, Ir) in the presence of PPh(3). In this way [(eta(5)-Cp')(3)Mo(3)S(4)M'Cl(PPh(3))][pts] (M' = Rh, Ir) could be isolated. An alternative route to the Mo(3)S(4)Rh cluster core was found in the reaction of [(eta(5)-Cp')(3)Mo(3)S(4)][pts] with [RhCl(1,5-cod)](2), which yielded [(eta(5)-Cp')(3)Mo(3)S(4)Rh(cod)][pts](2) ([7][pts](2)). Substitution of the cod ligand in [7][pts](2) by 1,3-bis(diphenylphosphanyl)propane (dppp) gave [(eta(5)-Cp')(3)Mo(3)S(4)Rh(dppp)][pts](2).

Synthesis of TiRru2 heterobimetallic and TiRuM (M = Rh, Rr, Pd, Pt) heterotrimetallic sulfido clusters from a hydrosulfido-bridged titanium-ruthenium complex

Treatment of the hydrosulfido-bridged titanium-ruthenium heterobimetallic complex [Cp2Ti(mu2-SH)2RuCl(eta5-C5Me5)] (1; Cp = eta5-C5H5) with an excess of triethylamine followed by addition of [RuCl2(PPh3)3] and [[(cod)M]2(mu2-Cl)2] (M = Rh, Ir; cod = 1,5-cyclooctadiene) led to the formation of the TiRu2 and TiRuM mixed-metal sulfido clusters [(CpTi)[(eta5-C5Me5)Ru][Ru(PPh3)2](mu3-S)2(mu2-Cl)2] (3) and [(CpTi)[(eta5-C5Me5)Ru][M(cod)](mu3-S)2(mu2-Cl)] (M = Rh (4a), Ir (4b)), respectively. On the other hand, the reactions of 1 with [M(PPh3)4] (M = Pd, Pt) afforded the TiRuM trinuclear clusters [(CpTiCl)[(eta5-C5Me5)Ru][M(PPh3)2](mu3-S)(mu2-S)(mu2-H)] (M = Pd (5a), Pt (5b)) with an unprecedented M3(mu3-S)(mu2-S) core. The detailed structures of these triangular clusters 3-5 have been determined by X-ray crystallography. Synthesis and reactivities of cubane-type sulfido clusters containing noble metals

Cubane-type sulfido clusters containing noble metals are newcomers compared with the corresponding clusters of the first transition series metals and molybdenum, which have been extensively studied in relation to metalloenzymes and industrial hydrodesulfurization catalysts. This Account reviews the recent progress in studies on the synthesis and reactivities of these noble metal cubane-type clusters. One of the goals in this new area lies in development of the unique catalysis of the noble metals embedded in the robust and redox-active cubane-type cores. Rational synthetic approaches indispensable to the preparation of such effective cluster catalysts are discussed to a significant extent.

Preparation of Cationic Dinuclear Hydrido Complexes of Ruthenium, Rhodium, and Iridium with Bridging Thiolato Ligands and Their Reactions with Nitrosobenzene

A series of cationic dinuclear hydrido complexes with bridging thiolato ligands [CpMH(&mgr;-SPr(i))(2)MCp][OTf] (4, M = Ru; 6a, M = Rh; 7a, M = Ir; Cp = eta(5)-C(5)Me(5), OTf = OSO(2)CF(3)) were synthesized by treatment of the corresponding chloro complexes [CpRuCl(&mgr;-SPr(i))(2)Ru(OH(2))Cp][OTf] (1) or [CpM(&mgr;-Cl)(&mgr;-SPr(i))(2)MCp][OTf] (2, M = Rh; 3, M = Ir) with HSiEt(3). The dirhodium and diiridium complexes 6 and 7 have been shown to possess a bridging hydrido ligand by crystallographic analysis, while the diruthenium complex 4 is proposed to have a terminal hydrido ligand that undergoes facile migration between the two ruthenium centers in solution. Complexes 4, 6a, and 7a reacted with nitrosobenzene to give the paramagnetic dinuclear nitrosobenzene complexes [CpM(&mgr;-PhNO)(&mgr;-SPr(i))(2)MCp](+) (M = Ru, Rh, Ir) along with azoxybenzene. The molecular structures of the three nitrosobenzene complexes have been determined by X-ray diffraction study to reveal that in each case nitrosobenzene acts as a &mgr;-eta(1):eta(1)-N,O ligand. Judging from the molecular structures and the ESR spectra, the unpaired electron is considered to be located mainly on the nitrosobenzene ligand, at least in the diruthenium and dirhodium complexes. On the other hand, complex 2 reacted with nitrosobenzene to give the incomplete cubane-type trinuclear cluster [(CpRh)(3)(&mgr;-Cl)(2)(&mgr;(3)-S)(&mgr;-SPr(i))](+), whose molecular structure has also been determined crystallographically.
