Density functional description of the early stages of the dioxygenation of [(MeC(CH2PPh2)3)M(catecholate)]+ complexes [M = Co(III), Ir(III)]: toward a rationalization of the catalytic mechanism of ring-opening dioxygenases

Cyclometallated Iridium and Platinum Complexes with Noninnocent Ligands

The electronic properties of the cyclometalated (CwedgeN) complexes of iridium and platinum metals with a catechol ligand have been studied experimentally and computationally. The synthesis and characterization of (p-tolylpyridine)Ir(3,5-di-tert-butylcatechol) (abbreviated Ir-sq) and (2,4-diflorophenylpyridine)Pt(3,5-di-tert-butylcatechol) (abbreviated Pt-sq) are reported along with their structural, spectral, and electrochemical properties. Reaction of the 3,5-di-tert-butylcatechol (DTBCat) ligand with the prepared cyclometalated metal complex was carried out in air in the presence of a base. The resulting complexes are air stable and are paramagnetic with the unpaired electron residing mainly on the catechol ligand. The bond lengths obtained from X-ray structure analysis and the theoretical results suggest the semiquinone form of the catechol ligand. Low-energy, intense (approximately 10(3) M-1 cm-1) transitions are observed in the visible to near-infrared region (600-700 nm) of the absorption spectra of the metal complexes. Electrochemically, the complexes exhibit a reversible reduction of the semiquinone form to the catechol form of the ligand and an irreversible oxidation to the unstable quinone form of the ligand. The noninnocent catechol ligand plays a significant role in the electronic properties of the metal complexes. Density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) calculations on the two open-shell molecules provide the ground-state and excited-state energies of the molecular orbitals involved in the observed low-energy transitions. The spin density in the two complexes resides mainly on the catechol ligand. The intense transition arises from excitation of the beta electron from a HOMO-n (n = 1 or 2 here) to the LUMO, rather than from the excitation of the unpaired alpha electron.

Aerobic Catechol Oxidation Catalyzed by a Bis(μ-oxo)dimanganese(III,III) Complex via a Manganese(II)−Semiquinonate Complex

A 3,5-di-tert-butyl-1,2-semiquinonato (DTBSQ) adduct of Mn(II) was prepared by a reaction between Mn(II)(TPA)Cl(2) (TPA = tris(pyridin-2-ylmethyl)amine) and DTBSQ anion and was isolated as a tetraphenylborate salt. The X-ray crystal structure revealed that the complex is formulated as a manganese(II)-semiquinonate complex [Mn(II)(TPA)(DTBSQ)](+) (1). The electronic spectra in solution also indicated the semiquinonate coordination to Mn. The exposure of 1 in acetonitrile to dioxygen afforded 3,5-di-tert-butyl-1,2-benzoquione and a bis(mu-oxo)dimanganese(III,III) complex [Mn(III)(2)(mu-oxo)(2)(TPA)(2)](2+) (2). The reaction of 2 with 3,5-di-tert-butylcatechol (DTBCH(2)) quantitatively afforded two equivalents of 1 under anaerobic conditions. The highly efficient catalytic oxidation of DTBCH(2) with dioxygen was achieved by combining the above two reactions, that is, by constructing a catalytic cycle involving both manganese complexes 1 and 2. It was revealed that dioxygen is reduced to water but not to hydrogen peroxide in the catalytic cycle.

A density functional investigation of the extradiol cleavage mechanism in non-heme iron catechol dioxygenases

The mechanism for extradiol cleavage in non-heme iron catechol dioxygenase was modelled theoretically via density functional theory. Based on the Fe(II)-His,His,Glu motif observed in enzymes, an active site model complex, [Fe(acetate)(imidazole)(2)(catecholate)(O(2))](-), was optimized for states with six, four and two unpaired electrons (U6, U4 and U2, respectively). The transfer of the terminal atom of the coordinated dioxygen leading to "ferryl" Fe=O intermediates spontaneously generates an extradiol epoxide. The computed barriers range from 19 kcal mol(-1) on the U6 surface to approximately 25 kcal mol(-1) on the U4 surface, with overall reaction energies of +11.6, 6.3 and 7.1 kcal mol(-1) for U6, U4 and U2, respectively. The calculations for a protonated process reveal the terminal oxygen of O(2) to be the thermodynamically favoured site but subsequent oxygen transfer to the catechol has a barrier of approximately 30-40 kcal mol(-1), depending on the spin state. Instead, protonating the acetate group gives a slightly higher energy species but a subsequent barrier on the U4 surface of only 7 kcal mol(-1) relative to the hydroperoxide complex. The overall exoergicity increases to 13 kcal mol(-1). The favoured proton-assisted pathway does not involve significant radical character and has features reminiscent of a Criegee rearrangement which involves the participation of the aromatic ring pi-orbitals in the formation of the new carbon-oxygen bond. The subsequent collapse of the epoxide, attack by the coordinated hydroxide and final product formation proceeds with an overall exoergicity of approximately 75 kcal mol(-1) on the U4 surface.
