Abstract
The chiral title compound, [CeNi6(C3H6NO2)12][Ce(NO3)3(OH)3(H2O)], comprises a complex heterometallic Ni/Ce cation and a homonuclear Ce anion. Both the cation and anion exhibit point group symmetry 3. with the Ce(III) atom situated on the threefold rotation axis. The cation metal core consists of six Ni(II) atoms coordinated in a slightly distorted octa-hedral N2O4 configuration by N and O atoms of 12 deprotonated l-alaninate ligands exhibiting both bridging and chelating modes. This metal-organic coordination motif encapsulates one Ce(III) atom that shows an icosa-hedral coordination by the O-donor atoms of the l-alaninate ligands, with Ce-O distances varying in the range 2.455 (5)-2.675 (3) Å. In the anion, the central Ce(III) ion is bound to three bidentate nitrate ligands, to three hydroxide ligands and to one water mol-ecule, with Ce-O distances in the range 2.6808 (19)-2.741 (2) Å. The H atoms of the coordinating water mol-ecule are disordered over three positions due to its location on a threefold rotation axis. Disorder is also observed in fragments of two l-alaninate ligands, with occupancy ratios of 0.608 (14):0.392 (14) and 0.669 (8):0.331 (8), respectively, for the two sets of sites. In the crystal, the complex cations and anions assemble through O-H⋯O and N-H⋯O hydrogen bonds into a three-dimensional network with large voids of approximately 1020 Å(3). The contributions of highly disordered ethanol and water solvent mol-ecules to the diffraction data were removed with the SQUEEZE procedure [Spek (2015 ▸). Acta Cryst. C71, 9-18]. The given chemical formula and other crystal data do not take into account the unknown amount of these solvent mol-ecules.

Abstract
Two novel three-dimensional (3D) 3d-4f mixed complexes [Ln(H(2)O)(4)][Ni(2)TTHA(SCN)(2)].H(3)O+ [Ln = Pr (1), Ce (2); H(6)TTHA = triethylenetetraaminehexaacetic acid], based on the building blocks of [Ni(2)TTHA(SCN)(2)](4-), were synthesized and characterized by X-ray crystal diffraction and magnetic properties. The single-crystal structures show that these complexes form a 3D framework, comprised of an unusual infinite one-dimensional chain based on heterometallic Ln2Ni2 rings. The temperature-dependent magnetic susceptibilities were analyzed by an approximate model, leading to g = 2.06. Delta = 2.83, zJ' = -0.6 cm-1 for complex 1 and g = 2.07, Delta = 1.00, zJ' = -0.5 cm(-1) for complex 2.

Abstract
The tetradentate imino-carboxylate ligand [L](2)(-) chelates the equatorial sites of Ni(II) to give the complex [Ni(L)(MeOH)(2)] in which a Ni(II) center is bound in an octahedral coordination environment with MeOH ligands occupying the axial sites. Lanthanide (Ln) and Group II metal ions (M) template the aggregation of six [Ni(L)] fragments into the octahedral cage aggregates (M[Ni(L)](6))(x)(+) (1: M = Sr(II); x = 2,2: M = Ba(II); x = 2, 3: M = La(III); x = 3, 4: M = Ce(III); x = 3, 5: M = Pr(III); x = 3, and 6: M = Nd(III); x = 3). In the presence of Group I cations, however, aggregates composed of the alkali metal-oxide cations template various cage compounds. Thus, Na(+) forms the trigonal bipyramidal [Na(5)O](3+) core within a tricapped trigonal prismatic [Ni(L)](9) aggregate to give ((Na(5)O) subset [Ni(L)](9)(MeOH)(3))(BF(4))(2).OH.CH(3)OH, 7. Li(+) and Na(+) together form a mixed Li(+)/Na(+) core comprising distorted trigonal bipyramidal [Na(3)Li(2)O](3+) within an approximately anti-square prismatic [Ni(L)](8) cage in ((Na(3)Li(2)O) subset [Ni(L)](8)(CH(3)OH)(1.3)(BF(4))(0.7))(BF(4))(2.3).(CH(3)OH)(2.75).(C(4)H(10)O)(0.5), 8, while in the presence of Li(+), a tetrahedral [Li(4)O](2+) core within a hexanuclear open cage [Ni(L)](6) in ((Li(4)O) subset [Ni(L)](6)(CH(3)OH)(3))2ClO(4).1.85CH(3)OH, 9, is produced. In the presence of H(2)O, the Cs(+) cation induces the aggregation of the [Ni(L)(H(2)O)(2)] monomer to give the cluster Cs(2)[Ni(L)(H(2)O)(2)](6).2I.4CH(3)OH.5.25H(2)O, 10. Analysis by electronic spectroscopy and mass spectrometry indicates that in solution the trend in stability follows the order 1-6 > 7 > 8 approximately 9. Magnetic susceptibility data indicate that there is net antiferromagnetic exchange between magnetic centers within the cages.

Abstract
A simple method is presented for calculating the oxidation state of Sm in complexes where Sm is bonded only to O ligands. A total of 88 SmO(n)() fragments with n = 4-12 were retrieved from the Cambridge Structural Database and were analyzed using the bond valence sum (BVS) method. New R(0) values for Sm(II)-O of 2.116(21) A and for Sm(III)-O of 2.055(13) A were derived. The average R(0) value of 2.086 A gives a good approximation of the oxidation state of the Sm ion, either +2 or +3, from the observed distances without any assumptions. The Sm-O distances for +2 and +3 complexes with coordination numbers of 4-11 are tabulated and reflect the requirement that the BVS must equal the oxidation state. The distances for CN = 12 were not included because of problems with the reported crystal structures. Several X-ray structure determinations where the BVS and the oxidation state did not agree are discussed.

Abstract
The hydrothermal reaction of Ln2O3 (Ln = Er, Gd, and Sm), pyridine-2,5-dicarboxylic acid (H2pydc), and Cu(II) reagents (CuO, Cu(OAc)2-2H2O, or CuCl2-2H2O) with a mole ratio of 1:2:4 resulted in the formation of six polymeric Cu(II)-Ln(III) complexes, [(Ln2Cu3(pydc)6(H2O)12)-4H2O]n (Ln = Er (1); Ln = Gd (2)), [(Ln4Cu2(pydc)8(H2O)12)-4H2O]n (Ln = Sm (3); Ln = Gd (4); Ln = Er (5)), and [(Gd2Cu2(pydc)4(H2O)8)-Cu(pydc)2-12H2O]n (6). 1 and 2 are isomorphous and crystallize in triclinic space group Ponebar. Compounds 3-5 are isomorphous and crystallize in monoclinic space group P2(1)/c. Compound 6 crystallizes in triclinic space group Ponebar. Complexes 1 and 2 have one-dimensional zigzag chain structures and compounds 3-5 display three-dimensional wavelike polymeric structures, while 6 has an infinite sandwich-type structure. The different structures of the complexes are induced by the different forms of Cu(II) reagents; the reactions of Cu(OAc)2-2H2O yield high Cu/Ln ratio products 1, 2, and 6, while the reactions of CuO or CuCl2-2H2O/2,2'-bipyridine results in low Cu/Ln ratio compounds 3-5. Temperature-dependent magnetic susceptibilities for 2, 4, and 5 were studied, and the thermal stabilities of complexes 2 and 4 were examined.

Abstract
We have studied the ligand behavior of racemic isovalinate (iva) and valinate (val) towards zinc(II) and calcium(II). The following solid metal amino acidates were obtained from aqueous solutions: Zn3Cl2(iva)4 (1), Zn3Cl2(val)4 (2). Zn(val)2 (3), Zn(iva)2 x 2H2O (4), Zn(iva)2 x 3.25H2O (5), Zn(iva)2 (6), Ca(iva)2x xH2O (7), and Ca(val)2 x H2O (8). Except for complex 3, these were hitherto unknown compounds. The conditions under which they formed, together with current ideas of the conditions on early Earth, support the assumption that alpha-amino acidate complexes of zinc and calcium might have belonged to early Earth's prebiotic chemical inventory. The zinc isovalinates 1, 4, and 5 were characterized by X-ray crystal structure analyses. Complex 1 forms a layer structure containing four- and five-coordinate metal atoms, whereas the zinc atoms in 4 and 5 are five-coordinate. Compound 5 possesses an unprecedented nonpolymeric structure built from cyclic [Zn6(iva)12] complexes, which are separated by water molecules. The thermolyses of solids 1. 3, and 8 at 320 degrees C in an N2 atmosphere yielded numerous organic products, including the cyclic dipeptide of valine from 3 and 8. Condensation, C-C bond breaking and bond formation, aromatization, decarboxylation, and deamination reactions occurred during the thermolyses. Such reactions of metal-bound a-amino acidates that are abiotically formed could already have contributed to an organic-geochemical diversity before life appeared on Earth.
