Polynuclear carboxylato-bridged iron(II) clusters: synthesis, structure, and host-guest chemistry

Self-Assembled Heterometallic Complexes by Incorporation of Calcium or Strontium Ion into a Manganese(II) 12-Metallacrown-3 Framework Supported by a Tripodal Ligand with Pyridine-Carboxylate Motifs: Stability in Their Manganese(III) Oxidized Form

We report on the isolation of a new family of μ-carboxylato-bridged metallocrown (MC) compounds by self-assembly of the recently isolated hexadentate tris(2-pyridylmethyl)amine ligand tpada^2- incorporating two carboxylate units with metal cations. Twelve-membered MCs of manganese of the type 12-MC-3, namely, [{Mn^II(tpada)}₃(M)(H₂O)_n]²⁺ (Mn₃M) (M = Mn²⁺ (n = 0), Ca²⁺ (n = 1), or Sr²⁺ (n = 2)), were structurally characterized. The metallamacrocycles connectivity consisting in three -[Mn-O-C-O]- repeating units is provided by one carboxylate unit of the three tpada^2- ligands, while the second carboxylate coordinated a fourth cation in the central cavity of the MC, Mn²⁺ or an alkaline earth metal, Ca²⁺ or Sr²⁺. Mn₃Ca and {Mn₃Sr}₂ join the small family of heterometallic manganese-calcium complexes and even rarer manganese-strontium complexes as models of the OEC of photosystem II (PSII). A 8-MC-4 of strontium of the molecular wheel type with four -[Sr-O]- repeating unit was also isolated by self-assembly of the tpada^2- ligand with Sr²⁺. This complex, namely, [Sr(tpada)(OH₂)]₄ (Sr₄), does not incorporate any cation in the central cavity but instead four water molecules coordinated to each Sr²⁺. Electrochemical investigations coupled to UV-visible absorption and EPR spectroscopies as well as electrospray mass spectrometry reveal the stability of the 12-MC-3 tetranuclear structures in solution, both in the initial oxidation state, Mn^II₃M, as well as in the three-electrons oxidized state, Mn^III₃M. Indeed, the cyclic voltammogram of all these complexes exhibits three-successive reversible oxidation waves between +0.5 and +0.9 V corresponding to the successive one-electron oxidation of the Mn(II) ion into Mn(III) of the three {Mn(tpada)} units constituting the ring, which are fully maintained after bulk electrolysis.

Trinuclear nickel and cobalt complexes containing unsymmetrical tripodal tetradentate ligands: syntheses, structural, magnetic, and catalytic properties

The coordination chemistries of the tetradentate N2O2-type ligands N-(2-pyridylmethyl)iminodiethanol (H2pmide) and N-(2-pyridylmethyl)iminodiisopropanol (H2pmidip) have been investigated with nickel(ii) and cobalt(ii/iii) ions. Three novel complexes prepared and characterized are [(Hpmide)2Ni3(CH3COO)4] (1), [(Hpmide)2Co3(CH3COO)4] (2), and [(pmidip)2Co3(CH3COO)4] (3). In 1 and 2, two terminal nickel(ii)/cobalt(ii) units are coordinated to one Hpmide(-) and two CH3CO2(-). The terminal units are each connected to a central nickel(ii)/cobalt(ii) cation through one oxygen atom of Hpmide(-) and two oxygen atoms of acetate ions, giving rise to nickel(ii) and cobalt(ii) trinuclear complexes, respectively. Trinuclear complexes 1 and 2 are isomorphous. In 3, two terminal cobalt(iii) units are coordinated to pmidip(2-) and two CH3CO2(-). The terminal units are each linked to a central cobalt(ii) cation through two oxygen atoms of pmidip(2-) and one oxygen atom of a bidentate acetate ion, resulting in a linear trinuclear mixed-valence cobalt complex. 1 shows a weak ferromagnetic interaction with the ethoxo and acetato groups between the nickel(ii) ions (g = 2.24, J = 2.35 cm(-1)). However, 2 indicates a weak antiferromagnetic coupling with the ethoxo and acetato groups between the cobalt(ii) ions (g = 2.37, J = -0.5 cm(-1)). Additionally, 3 behaves as a paramagnetic cobalt(ii) monomer, due to the diamagnetic cobalt(iii) ions in the terminal units (g = 2.53, |D| = 36.0 cm(-1)). No catalytic activity was observed in 1. However, 2 and 3 showed significant catalytic activities toward various olefins with modest to good yields. 3 was slightly less efficient toward olefin epoxidation reaction than 2. Also 2 was used for terminal olefin oxidation reaction and was oxidised to the corresponding epoxides in moderate yields (34-75%) with conversions ranging from 47-100%. The cobalt complexes 2 and 3 promoted the O-O bond cleavage to ∼75% heterolysis and ∼25% homolysis.

Heptanuclear antiferromagnetic Fe(III)-D-(-)-quinato assemblies with an S = 3/2 ground state-pH-specific synthetic chemistry, spectroscopic, structural, and magnetic susceptibility studies

Iron is an essential metal ion with numerous roles in biological systems and advanced abiotic materials. D-(-)-quinic acid is a cellular metal ion chelator, capable of promoting reactions with metal M(II,III) ions under pH-specific conditions. In an effort to comprehend the chemical reactivity of well-defined forms of Fe(III)/Fe(II) toward α-hydroxycarboxylic acids, pH-specific reactions of: (a) [Fe3O(CH3COO)6(H2O)3]·(NO3)·4H2O with D-(-)-quinic acid in a molar ratio 1:3 at pH 2.5 and (b) Mohr's salt with D-(-)-quinic acid in a molar ratio 1:3 at pH 7.5, respectively, led to the isolation of the first two heptanuclear Fe(III)-quinato complexes, [Fe7O3(OH)3(C7H10O6)6]·20.5H2O (1) and (NH4)[Fe7(OH)6(C7H10O6)6]·(SO4)2·18H2O (2). Compounds 1 and 2 were characterized by analytical, spectroscopic (UV-vis, FT-IR, EPR, and Mössbauer) techniques, CV, TGA-DTG, and magnetic susceptibility measurements. The X-ray structures of 1 and 2 reveal heptanuclear assemblies of six Fe(III) ions bound by six doubly deprotonated quinates and one Fe(III) ion bound by oxido- and hydroxido-bridges (1), and hydroxido-bridges (2), all in an octahedral fashion. Mössbauer spectroscopy on 1 and 2 suggests the presence of Fe(III) ions in an all-oxygen environment. EPR measurements indicate that 1 and 2 retain their structure in solution, while magnetic measurements reveal an overall antiferromagnetic behavior with a ground state S = 3/2. The collective physicochemical properties of 1 and 2 suggest that the (a) nature of the ligand, (b) precursor form of iron, (c) pH, and (d) molecular stoichiometry are key factors influencing the chemical reactivity of the binary Fe(II,III)-hydroxycarboxylato systems, their aqueous speciation, and ultimately through variably emerging hydrogen bonding interactions, the assembly of multinuclear Fe(III)-hydroxycarboxylato clusters with distinct lattice architectures of specific dimensionality (2D-3D) and magnetic signature.

2-Phenoxypyridyl dinucleating ligands for assembly of diiron(II) complexes: efficient reactivity with O(2) to form (mu-Oxo)diiron(III) units

A series of 2-phenoxypyridyl and 2-phenoxyimino ligands, H(2)L(R,R') [2,2'-(5,5'-(1,2-phenylenebis(ethyne-2,1-diyl))bis(pyridine-5,2-diyl))diphenol, where R = H, Me, or t-Bu, and R' = H or Ph] and H(2)BIPS(Me,Ph) [(3,3'-(1E,1'E)-(3,3'-sulfonylbis(3,1-phenylene)bis(azan-1-yl-1-ylidene))bis(methan-1-yl-1-ylidene)bis(5-methylbiphenyl-2-ol)], were synthesized as platforms for nonheme diiron(II) protein model complexes. UV-vis spectrophotometric studies and preparative-scale reactions of L(R,R') or BIPS(Me,Ph), where L(R,R') and BIPS(Me,Ph) are the deprotonated forms of H(2)L(R,R') and H(2)BIPS(Me,Ph), respectively, with iron(II) revealed that the presence of sterically protective o-phenol substituents is necessary to obtain discrete dinuclear species. The reaction of L(Me,Ph) with iron(II) in tetrahydrofuran (THF) afforded the doubly bridged compound [Fe(2)(L(Me,Ph))(2)(THF)(3)] (1), which was characterized in the solid state by X-ray crystallography. A large internal cavity in this complex facilitates its rapid reaction with dioxygen, even at -50 degrees C, to produce the thermodynamically stable [Fe(2)(mu-O)(L(Me,Ph))(2)] (2) species. Reaction of (18)O(2) instead of (16)O(2) with 1 led to a shift in the Fe-O-Fe vibrational frequency from 833 to 798 cm(-1), confirming the presence of the (mu-oxo)diiron(III) core and molecular oxygen as the source of the bridging oxo group. The L(Me,Ph) ligand is robust toward oxidative decomposition and does not display any reversible redox activity.

Synthesis, characterization, and preliminary oxygenation studies of benzyl- and ethyl-substituted pyridine ligands of carboxylate-rich diiron(II) complexes

In this study benzyl and ethyl groups were appended to pyridine and aniline ancillary ligands in diiron(II) complexes of the type [Fe(2)(mu-O(2)CAr(R))(2)(O(2)CAr(R))(2)(L)(2)], where (-)O(2)CAr(R) is a sterically hindered terphenyl carboxylate, 2,6-di(p-tolyl)- or 2,6-di(p-fluorophenyl)benzoate (R = Tol or 4-FPh, respectively). These crystallographically characterized compounds were prepared as analogues of the diiron(II) center in the hydroxylase component of soluble methane monooxygenase (MMOH). The use of 2-benzylpyridine (2-Bnpy) yielded doubly bridged [Fe(2)(mu-O(2)CAr(Tol))(2)(O(2)CAr(Tol))(2)(2-Bnpy)(2)] (1) and [Fe(2)(mu-O(2)CAr(4)(-)(FPh))(2)(O(2)CAr(4)(-)(FPh))(2)(2-Bnpy)(2)] (4), whereas tetra-bridged [Fe(2)(mu-O(2)CAr(Tol))(4)(4-Bnpy)(2)] (3) resulted when 4-benzylpyridine (4-Bnpy) was employed. Similarly, 2-(4-chlorobenzyl)pyridine (2-(4-ClBn)py) and 2-benzylaniline (2-Bnan) were employed as N-donor ligands to prepare [Fe(2)(mu-O(2)CAr(Tol))(2)(O(2)CAr(Tol))(2)(2-(4-ClBn)py)(2)] (2) and [Fe(2)(mu-O(2)CAr(Tol))(2)(O(2)CAr(Tol))(2)(2-Bnan)(2)] (5). The placement of the substituent on the pyridine ring had no effect on the geometry of the diiron(II) compounds isolated when 2-, 3-, or 4-ethylpyridine (2-, 3-, or 4-Etpy) was introduced as the ancillary nitrogen ligand. The isolated [Fe(2)(mu-O(2)CAr(Tol))(2)(O(2)CAr(Tol))(2)(2-Etpy)] (6), [Fe(2)(mu-O(2)CAr(Tol))(2)(O(2)CAr(Tol))(2)(3-Etpy)] (7), [Fe(2)(mu-O(2)CAr(Tol))(2)(O(2)CAr(Tol))(2)(4-Etpy)] (8), and [Fe(2)(mu-O(2)CAr(4)(-FPh))(2)(O(2)CAr(4)(-)(FPh))(2)(2-Etpy)(2)] (9) complexes all contain doubly bridged metal centers. The oxygenation of compounds 1-9 was studied by GC-MS and NMR analysis of the organic fragments following decomposition of the product complexes. Hydrocarbon fragment oxidation occurred for compounds in which the substrate moiety was in close proximity to the diiron center. The extent of oxidation depended upon the exact makeup of the ligand set.

Dioxygen-initiated oxidation of heteroatomic substrates incorporated into ancillary pyridine ligands of carboxylate-rich diiron(II) complexes

Progress toward the development of functional models of the carboxylate-bridged diiron active site in soluble methane monooxygenase is described in which potential substrates are introduced as substituents on bound pyridine ligands. Pyridine ligands incorporating a thiol, sulfide, sulfoxide, or phosphine moiety were allowed to react with the preassembled diiron(II) complex [Fe(2)(mu-O(2)CAr(R))(2)(O(2)CAr(R))(2)(THF)(2)], where (-)O(2)CAr(R) is a sterically hindered 2,6-di(p-tolyl)- or 2,6-di(p-fluorophenyl)benzoate (R = Tol or 4-FPh). The resulting diiron(II) complexes were characterized crystallographically. Triply and doubly bridged compounds [Fe(2)(mu-O(2)CAr(Tol))(3)(O(2)CAr(Tol))(2-MeSpy)] (4) and [Fe(2)(mu-O(2)CAr(Tol))(2)(O(2)CAr(Tol))(2)(2-MeS(O)py)(2)] (5) resulted when 2-methylthiopyridine (2-MeSpy) and 2-pyridylmethylsulfoxide (2-MeS(O)py), respectively, were employed. Another triply bridged diiron(II) complex, [Fe(2)(mu-O(2)CAr(4)(-)(FPh))(3)-(O(2)CAr(4)(-)(FPh))(2-Ph(2)Ppy)] (3), was obtained containing 2-diphenylphosphinopyridine (2-Ph(2)Ppy). The use of 2-mercaptopyridine (2-HSpy) produced the mononuclear complex [Fe(O(2)CAr(Tol))(2)(2-HSpy)(2)] (6a). Together with that of previously reported [Fe(2)(mu-O(2)CAr(Tol))(3)(O(2)CAr(Tol))(2-PhSpy)] (2) and [Fe(2)(mu-O(2)CAr(Tol))(3)(O(2)CAr(Tol))(2-Ph(2)Ppy)] (1), the dioxygen reactivity of these iron(II) complexes was investigated. A dioxygen-dependent intermediate (6b) formed upon exposure of 6a to O(2), the electronic structure of which was probed by various spectroscopic methods. Exposure of 4 and 5 to dioxygen revealed both sulfide and sulfoxide oxidation. Oxidation of 3 in CH(2)Cl(2) yields [Fe(2)(mu-OH)(2)(mu-O(2)CAr(4)(-)(FPh))(O(2)CAr(4)(-FPh))(3)(OH(2))(2-Ph(2)P(O)py)] (8), which contains the biologically relevant {Fe(2)(mu-OH)(2)(mu-O(2)CR)}(3+) core. This reaction is sensitive to the choice of carboxylate ligands, however, since the p-tolyl analogue 1 yielded a hexanuclear species, 7, upon oxidation.

Metallacryptate Single-Molecule Magnets: Effect of Lower Molecular Symmetry on Blocking Temperature

The structural characterization of complexes [Mn(II)4Mn(III)22(pdol)12(OCH3)12(O)16(N3)6] (1) and [Mn(II)4Mn(III)22(pdol)12(OCH3)12(O)16(OH)2(H3O)(OCH3)3].ClO4.5CH3OH (2), where pdol(2-) is di-2-pyridyl methanediol, reveals that each has a metallacryptand shell that encapsulates a manganese oxide core. Variable-temperature direct current magnetic susceptibility measurements on 2 indicate a paramagnetic ground state that results from an overall antiferromagnetic interaction in the cluster, with chiT values decreasing from 300 K (51.2 cm3 K mol(-1)) to 2 K (19.8 cm3 K mol(-1)). Variable-temperature alternating current magnetic susceptibility measurements imply that both 1 and 2 behave as single-molecule magnets. Fitting the frequency-dependent out-of-phase magnetic susceptibility to the Arrhenius equation yields an effective energy barrier, Ueff, to magnetization relaxation of 16.5 +/- 0.7 K (11.5 +/- 0.5 cm(-1)) for 1 and 36.2 +/- 2.0 K (25.1 +/- 1.4 cm(-1)) for 2. The larger value for 2 is in agreement with the lower molecular symmetry, larger magnetoanisotropy, and higher ground spin state of 2 compared to those of 1. This observation suggests a new strategy for increasing the blocking temperatures in high-nuclearity manganese clusters.

Modeling the Syn Disposition of Nitrogen Donors at the Active Sites of Carboxylate-Bridged Diiron Enzymes. Enforcing Dinuclearity and Kinetic Stability with a 1,2-Diethynylbenzene-Based Ligand

The syn coordination of histidine residues at the active sites of several carboxylate-rich non-heme diiron enzymes has been difficult to reproduce with small molecule model compounds. In this study, ligands derived from 1,8-naphthyridine, phthalazine, and 1,2-diethynylbenzene were employed to mimic this geometric feature. The preassembled diiron(II) complex [Fe(2)(micro-O(2)CAr(Tol))(2)(O(2)CAr(Tol))(2)(THF)(2)] (1), where Ar(Tol)CO(2)(-) is the sterically hindered carboxylate 2,6-di(p-tolyl)benzoate, served as a convenient starting material for the preparation of iron(II) complexes, all of which were crystallographically characterized. Use of the ligand 2,7-dimethyl-1,8-naphthyridine (Me(2)-napy) afforded the mononuclear complex [Fe(O(2)CAr(Tol))(2)(Me(2)-napy)] (2), whereas dinuclear [Fe(2)(micro-DMP)(micro-O(2)CAr(Tol))(2)(O(2)CAr(Tol))(2)(THF)] (3) resulted when 1,4-dimethylphthalazine (DMP) was employed. The dinuclear core of compound 3 is kinetically labile, as evidenced by the formation of [Fe(O(2)CAr(Tol))(2)(vpy)(2)] (4) upon addition of 2-vinylpyridine (vpy). The diiron analogue of 4, [Fe(2)(micro-O(2)CAr(Tol))(2)(O(2)CAr(Tol))(2)(vpy)(2)] (5), was prepared directly from 1. When the sterically more demanding ligand 2,6-di(4-tert-butylphenyl)benzoate (Ar(4-tBuPh)CO(2)(-)) was used, mononuclear [Fe(O(2)CAr(4)(-)(tBuPh))(2)(THF)(2)] (6) and [Fe(O(2)CAr(4)(-)(tBuPh))(2)(DMP)(2)] (7) formed. The difficulty in stabilizing a dinuclear core with these simple (N)(2)-donor ligands was circumvented by preparing a family of 1,2-diethynylbenzene-based ligands, from which were readily assembled the complexes [Fe(2)(Et(2)BCQEB(Et))(micro-O(2)CAr(Tol))(3)](OTf) (15) and [Cu(2)(Et(2)BCQEB(Et))(micro-I)(2)] (16), where Et(2)BCQEB(Et) is 1,2-bis(3-ethynyl-8-carboxylatequinoline)benzene ethyl ester. The Et(2)BCQEB(Et) framework provides both structural flexibility and the desired syn nitrogen donor geometry, thus serving as a good first-generation ligand in this class.

Modeling Features of the Non-Heme Diiron Cores in O2-Activating Enzymes through the Synthesis, Characterization, and Oxidation of 1,8-Naphthyridine-Based Complexes

Multidentate naphthyridine-based ligands were used to prepare a series of diiron(II) complexes. The compound [Fe(2)(BPMAN)(mu-O(2)CPh)(2)](OTf)(2) (1), where BPMAN = 2,7-bis[bis(2-pyridylmethyl)aminomethyl]-1,8-naphthyridine, exhibits two reversible oxidation waves with E(1/2) values at +310 and +733 mV vs Cp(2)Fe(+)/Cp(2)Fe, as revealed by cyclic voltammetry. Reaction with O(2) or H(2)O(2) affords a product with optical and Mössbauer properties that are characteristic of a (mu-oxo)diiron(III) species. The complexes [Fe(2)(BPMAN)(mu-OH)(mu-O(2)CAr(Tol))](OTf)(2) (2) and [Fe(2)(BPMAN)(mu-OMe)(mu-O(2)CAr(Tol))](OTf)(2) (3) were synthesized, where Ar(Tol)CO(2)(-) is the sterically hindered ligand 2,6-di(p-tolyl)benzoate. Compound 2 has a reversible redox wave at +11 mV, and both 2 and 3 react with O(2), via a mixed-valent Fe(II)Fe(III) intermediate, to give final products that are also consistent with (mu-oxo)diiron(III) species. The paddle-wheel compound [Fe(2)(BBAN)(mu-O(2)CAr(Tol))(3)](OTf) (4), where BBAN = 2,7-bis(N,N-dibenzylaminomethyl)-1,8-naphthyridine, reacts with dioxygen to yield benzaldehyde via oxidative N-dealkylation of a benzyl group on BBAN, an internal substrate. In the presence of bis(4-methylbenzyl)amine, the reaction also produces p-tolualdehyde, revealing oxidation of an external substrate. A structurally related compound, [Fe(2)(BEAN)(mu-O(2)CAr(Tol))(3)](OTf) (5), where BEAN = 2,7-bis(N,N-diethylaminomethyl)-1,8-naphthyridine, does not undergo N-dealkylation, nor does it facilitate the oxidation of bis(4-methylbenzyl)amine. The contrast in reactivity of 4 and 5 is attributed to a difference in accessibility of the substrate to the diiron centers of the two compounds. The Mössbauer spectroscopic properties of the diiron(II) complexes were also investigated.

Nature of the reactants and influence of water on the supramolecular assembly

The influences of the nature of reactants and water on the self-assembly of cationic Cu(II) complex structures containing N-(2-pyridylmethyl)glycine (Hpgly) and N-(2-pyridylmethyl)-l-alanine (Hpala) ligands have been investigated. A metallamacrocycle [Cu(6)(pgly)(3)(spgly)(3)] (ClO(4))(6).9H(2)O has been formed by the reaction of [Cu(pgly)(2)].2H(2)O with Cu(ClO(4))(2).6H(2)O. The hexameric cation has Schiff base and reduced Schiff base ligands alternatively bonded to Cu(II) to provide cyclohexane-like conformation with a cavity diameter of 9.4 A. The reaction of Cu(ClO(4))(2).6H(2)O with Hpgly.HCl yielded [Cu(pgly)(H(2)O)](ClO(4)), which is presumed to have 1D coordination polymeric structure. A [K subset [12-MC-3]] metallacrown, [K(ClO(4))(3)[Cu(3)(pala)(3)]](ClO(4)) has been isolated by reacting Cu(ClO(4))(2) with Kpala in MeCN/MeOH. This [K subset [12-MC-3]] metallacrown further reacts with water to form an infinite 1D coordination polymer [Cu(pala)(H(2)O)(ClO(4))](n)(), which can also be obtained by conducting the reaction in aqueous MeOH.

Synthesis and circular dichroism studies of N,N-bis(2-quinolylmethyl)amino acid Cu(II) complexes: determination of absolute configuration and enantiomeric excess by the exciton coupling method

We report a method to determine the absolute configuration of alpha-amino acids by exciton coupled circular dichroism (ECCD). Naturally occurring amino acids were successfully derivatized with 2-bromomethylquinoline. Complexation of these conformationally flexible ligands with Cu(II) salts yielded defined propeller-like structures. The direction of the twist (i.e., the relative orientation of the chromophores to each other) is governed by the asymmetric amino acid carbon center. The transition moments of the chromophores couple and yield a bisignate circular dichroism spectrum, the sign of which corresponds to the absolute configuration of the chiral center of the amino acid. Enantiomeric excess (e.e.) of amino acid derivatives is linearly related to the differential extinction coefficient Delta(epsilon) and can be assessed easily utilizing a standard curve. This efficient, sensitive technique requires low analyte concentrations, offers several advantages over established methods, and could be applied in medicinal, pharmaceutical, or chemical retail and manufacturing industry.

Synthesis, structure, and magnetic properties of tetranuclear cubane-like and chain-like iron(II) complexes based on the N(4)O pentadentate dinucleating ligand 1,5-bis[(2-pyridylmethyl)amino]pentan-3-ol

The tetranuclear complexes [Fe(4)(pypentO)(pym)(3)(Oac)(NCS)(3)] x 1.5EtOH (1), [Fe(4)(pypentO)(pym)(Oac)(2)(NCS)(2)(MeO)(2)(H(2)O)] x H(2)O (2), [Fe(2)(pypentO)(NCO)(3)](2) (3), and [Fe(2)(pypentO)(N(3))(3)](2) (4) have been prepared, and their structure and magnetic properties have been studied (pypentOH = 1,5-bis[(2-pyridylmethyl)amino]pentan-3-ol, pymH = 2-pyridylmethanol). The X-ray diffraction analysis of 1 (C(43)H(53)N(10)O(7.5)S(3)Fe(4), monoclinic, P2(1)/n, a = 11.6153(17) A, b = 34.391(17) A, c = 14.2150(18) A, beta = 110.88(5) degrees, V = 5305(3) A(3), Z = 4) and 2 (C(31)H(45)N(7)O(10)S(2)Fe(4), monoclinic, C2/c, a = 19.9165(17) A, b = 21.1001(12) A, c = 21.2617(19) A, beta = 104.441(10) degrees, V = 8652.7(12) A(3), Z = 8) showed a Fe(4)O(4) cubane-like arrangement of four iron(II) atoms, four mu(3)-O bridging ligands, one (1) or two (2) syn-syn bridging acetates. The X-ray diffraction analysis of 3 (C(40)H(46)N(14)O(8)Fe(4), monoclinic, P2(1)/c, a = 11.7633(18) A, b = 18.234(3) A, c = 10.4792(16) A, beta = 99.359(18) degrees, V = 2217.7(6) A(3), Z = 2) and 4 (C(34)H(46)N(26)O(2)Fe(4), monoclinic, P2(1)/c, V = 4412.4(10) A(3), a = 23.534(3) A, b = 18.046(2) A, c = 10.4865(16) A, beta = 97.80(2) degrees, Z = 4) showed a zigzag bis-dinuclear arrangement of four iron(II) cations, two mu(2)-O bridging pypentO ligands, four mu(2)-N-cyanato bridging ligands (3) or four end-on azido bridging ligands (4): they are the first examples of cyanato and azido bridged discrete polynuclear ferrous compounds, respectively. The Mössbauer spectra of 1 are consistent with four different high-spin iron(II) sites in the Fe(4)O(4) cubane-type structure. The Mössbauer spectra of 3 are consistent with two high-spin iron(II) sites (N(5)O and N(4)O). Below 190 K, the Mössbauer spectra of 4 are consistent with one N(5)O and two N(4)O high-spin iron(II) sites. The temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility was fitted with J(1) approximately 0 cm(-1), J(2) = -1.3 cm(-1), J(3) = 4.6 cm(-1), D = 6.4 cm(-1), and g = 2.21 for 1; J(1) = 2.6 cm(-1), J(2) = 2.5 cm(-1), J(3) = - 5.6 cm(-1), D = 4.5 cm(-1), and g = 2.09 for 2; J(1) = 1.5 cm(-1), J(2) = 0.2 cm(-1), D = - 5.6 cm(-1), D' = 4.5 cm(-1), and g = 2.14 for 3; and J(1) = - 2.6 cm(-1), J(2) = 0.8 cm(-1), D= 6.3 cm(-1), D' = 1.6 cm(-1), and g = 2.18 for 4. The differences in sign among the J(1), J(2), and J(3) super-exchange interactions indicate that the faces including only mu(3)-OR bridges exhibit ferromagnetic interactions. The nature of the ground state in 1-3 is confirmed by simulation of the magnetization curves at 2 and 5 K. In the bis-dinuclear iron(II) compounds 3 and 4, the J(2) interaction resulting from the bridging of two Fe(2)(pypentO)X(3) units through two pseudo-halide anions is ferromagnetic in 3 (X = mu(2)-N-cyanato) and may be either ferro- or antiferromagnetic in 4 (X = end-on azido). The J(1) interaction through the central O(alkoxo) and pseudo-halide bridges inside the dinuclear units is ferromagnetic in 3 (X = mu(2)-N-cyanato) and antiferromagnetic in 4 (X = end-on azido). In agreement with the symmetry of the two Fe(II) sites in complexes 3 and 4, D (pentacoordinated sites) is larger than D' (octahedral sites).

Self-assembled organometallic [12]metallacrown-3 complexes

The reaction of [(arene)RuCl2]2 (arene = C6H6, cymene, C6H3Et3, or C6Me6) or [Cp*RhCl2]2 with 3-hydroxy-2-pyridone in the presence of Cs2CO3 gives trinuclear metallamacrocyclic complexes. The self-assembly process was shown to be completely diastereoselective, and a racemic mixture of complexes with M(R)M(R)M(R) or MsMsMs (M=Ru, Rh) configuration was obtained. Plausible mononuclear intermediates of the formula [(arene)RuCl(C5H4NO2)] (arene = cymene, C6Me6) have been isolated and characterized. A structurally related trimer was synthesized by using [(cymene)RuCl2]2 and 3-acetamido-2-pyridone instead of 3-hydroxy-2-pyridone. The macrocycles were shown to be highly potent ionophores for Na+ and/or Li+ with negligible affinities for the larger cation K+. The selectivities of the receptors depend on the pi-ligand present: whereas the (C6H6)Ru- and (cymene)Ru complexes bind both Li+ and Na+, the (C6Me6)Ru-, (C6H3Et3)Ru-, and Cp*Rh complexes bind exclusively Li+. For all receptors, the presence of alkali metal ions can be detected electrochemically: the peak potential is shifted by > 300 mV toward anionic potential upon binding. This behavior was utilized to detect Li+ and Na+ colorimetrically. Single crystal X-ray analyses have been carried out on eight complexes, four of which are bound to an alkali metal halide ion pair. Structural parameters, which affect the affinity and selectivity are discussed. A computational study on [[MX][12]crown-3] complexes (M =Li, Na; X=Cl, Br, I) was performed in order to compare relevant bond lengths and angles of the energy-minimized structures with those of the organometallic receptors.
