Abstract
The new compound [Ru(II)([9]aneS3)(L)(dmso)]ClO4 ([]ClO4) ([9]aneS3 = 1,4,7-trithiacyclononane, HL = 9-hydroxyphenalenone, dmso = dimethylsulfoxide) has been structurally characterised to reveal almost equal C-O bond distances of coordinated L(-), suggesting a delocalised bonding situation of the β-diketonato ligand. The dmso ligand is coordinated via the sulfur atom in the native (1+) and reduced states (1 and 1-) as has been revealed by X-ray crystallography and by DFT calculations. Cyclic voltammetry of 1+ exhibits two close-lying one-electron oxidation waves at 0.77 V and 0.94 V, and two similarly close one-electron reduction processes at -1.43 V and -1.56 V versus SCE in CH2Cl2. The electronic structures of 1n in the accessible redox states have been analysed via experiments (EPR and UV-vis-NIR spectroelectrochemistry) and by DFT/TD-DFT calculations, revealing the potential for bidirectional non-innocent behaviour of coordinated L(˙/-/˙2-). Specifically, the studies establish significant involvement of L based frontier orbitals in both the oxidation and reduction processes: [([9]aneS3)(dmso)Ru(III)-L˙](3+) (1(3+)) ⇌ [([9]aneS3)(dmso)Ru(III)-L(-)](2+)/[([9]aneS3)(dmso)Ru(II)-L˙](2+) (1(2+)) ⇌ [([9]aneS3)(dmso)Ru(II)-L(-)](+) (1(+)) ⇌ [([9]aneS3)(dmso)Ru(II)-L(˙2-)] (1) ⇌ [([9]aneS3)(dmso)Ru(II)-L(3-)](-)/[([9]aneS3)(dmso)Ru(I)-L(˙2-)](-) (1-).

Abstract
Using a [Ru(II)([9]aneS3)] templating moiety, kinetically-locked, metallomacrocycles incorporating adenine based ligands have been synthesised through self-assembly. The kinetically robust nature of these structures is confirmed by electrochemical studies: each can be reversibly oxidised in a four-member redox series, containing two formally mixed valence states. Unusually, the electrochemically derived comproportionation constants for these mixed valence states are very different, suggesting that intermetallic coupling differs between the two states. Spectroelectochemistry studies confirm that while the [Ru(II)2Ru(III)] state is valence localised, the [Ru(II)Ru(III)2] state is electronically delocalised. Mechanisms by which this switching effect could occur, which involve the unusual connectivities in these mixed valence species, are presented.

Abstract
The tetradentate ligands 1,8-bis(pyrid-2-yl)-3,6-dithiaoctane (pdto) and 1,8-bis(benzimidazol-2-yl)-3,6-dithiaoctane (bbdo) form the complexes [Ru(pdto)(mu-Cl)](2)(ClO(4))(2) 1 and [Ru(bbdo)(mu-Cl)](2)(ClO(4))(2) 2 respectively. The new di-mu-chloro dimers 1 and 2 undergo facile symmetrical bridge cleavage reactions with the diimine ligands 2,2'-bipyridine (bpy) and dipyridylamine (dpa) to form the six-coordinate complexes [Ru(pdto)(bpy)](ClO(4))(2) 3, [Ru(bbdo)(bpy)](ClO(4))(2) 4, [Ru(pdto)(dpa)](ClO(4))(2) 5 and [Ru(bbdo)(dpa)](ClO(4))(2) 6 and with the triimine ligand 2,2':6,2''-terpyridine (terpy) to form the unusual seven-coordinate complexes [Ru(pdto)(terpy)](ClO(4))(2) 7 and [Ru(bbdo)(terpy)](ClO(4))(2) 8. In 1 the dimeric cation [Ru(pdto)(mu-Cl)](2)(2+) is made up of two approximately octahedrally coordinated Ru(II) centers bridged by two chloride ions, which constitute a common edge between the two Ru(II) octahedra. Each ruthenium is coordinated also to two pyridine nitrogen and two thioether sulfur atoms of the tetradentate ligand. The ligand pdto is folded around Ru(II) as a result of the cis-dichloro coordination, which corresponds to a "cis-alpha" configuration [DeltaDelta/LambdaLambda(rac) diastereoisomer] supporting the possibility of some attractive pi-stacking interactions between the parallel py rings at each ruthenium atom. The ruthenium atom in the complex cations 3a and 4 exhibit a distorted octahedral coordination geometry composed of two nitrogen atoms of the bpy and the two thioether sulfur and two py/bzim nitrogen atoms of the pdto/bbdo ligand, which is actually folded around Ru(II) to give a "cis-alpha" isomer. The molecule of complex 5 contains a six-coordinated ruthenium atom chelated by pdto and dpa ligands in the expected distorted octahedral fashion. The (1)H and (13)C NMR spectral data of the complexes throw light on the nature of metal-ligand bonding and the conformations of the chelate rings, which indicates that the dithioether ligands maintain their tendency to fold themselves even in solution. The bis-mu-chloro dimers 1 and 2 show a spin-allowed but Laporte-forbidden t(2g)(6)((1)A(1g))--> t(2g)(5) e(g)(1)((1)T(1g), (1)T(2g)) d-d transition. They also display an intense Ru(II) dpi--> py/bzim (pi*) metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) transition. The mononuclear complexes 3-8 exhibit dpi-->pi* MLCT transitions in the range 340-450 nm. The binuclear complexes 1 and 2 exhibit a ligand field ((3)MC) luminescence even at room temperature, whereas the mononuclear complexes 3 and 4 show a ligand based radical anion ((3)MLCT) luminescence. The binuclear complexes 1 and 2 undergo two successive oxidation processes corresponding to successive Ru(II)/Ru(III) couples, affording a stable mixed-valence Ru(II)Ru(III) state (K(c): 1, 3.97 x 10(6); 2, 1.10 x 10(6)). The mononuclear complexes 3-7 exhibit only one while 8 shows two quasi-reversible metal-based oxidative processes. The coordinated 'soft' thioether raises the redox potentials significantly by stabilising the 'soft' Ru(II) oxidation state. One or two ligand-based reduction processes were also observed for the mononuclear complexes.

Abstract
A series of photoreactive complexes of the type Ru(terpy*)(N-N)(L)(2+), where terpy* is 4'-(3,5-ditertiobutylphenyl)-2,2':6',2' '-terpyridine, N-N is the bidentate chelate phen or dmp (phen = 1,10-phenanthroline, dmp = 2,9-dimethyl-1,10-phenanthroline), and L is the monodentate ligand dms, MeBN, or MeOBN (dms = dimethyl sulfide, MeBN = 2,6-dimethyl benzonitrile, MeOBN = 2,6-dimethoxybenzonitrile), has been synthesized and fully characterized by proton NMR spectroscopy, electrospray mass spectrometry, and UV-vis spectroscopy. The X-ray structures of four complexes were also obtained. In neat pyridine, the quantum yields for the photosubsitution of L by pyridine were measured and showed dramatic variations depending on the steric interactions between the spectator bidentate ligand and the leaving monodentate ligand L. The use of dmp instead of phen multiplied the photosubstitution efficiency by a factor of 20-50, depending on L. This effect could be qualitatively correlated to the distortions observed in the X-ray structures of the corresponding complexes. The highly distorted structure of Ru(terpy)(dmp)(dms)(PF(6))(2) showed a very high photosubsitution quantum yield phi = 0.36 in neat pyridine. The high photoreactivity of some of the compounds makes them particularly promising as components of future light-driven molecular machines.

Abstract
Two new Ru complexes containing the 1,10-phenanthroline (phen) and 1,4,7-trithiacyclononane ([9]aneS3, SCH2CH2SCH2CH2SCH2CH2) ligands of general formula [Ru(phen)(L)([9]aneS3)]2+ (L = MeCN, 3; L = pyridine (py), 4) have been prepared and thoroughly characterized. Structural characterization in the solid state has been performed by means of X-ray diffraction analyses, which show a distorted octahedral environment for a diamagnetic d6 Ru(II), as expected. 1H NMR spectroscopy provides evidence that the same structural arrangement is maintained in solution. Further spectroscopic characterization has been carried out by UV-vis spectroscopy where the higher acceptor capability of MeCN versus the py ligand is manifested in a 9-15-nm blue shift in its MLCT bands. The E1/2 redox potential of the Ru(III)/Ru(II) couple for 3 is anodically shifted with respect to its Ru-py analogue, 4, by 60 mV, which is also in agreement with a higher electron-withdrawing capacity of the former. The mechanism for the reaction Ru-py + MeCN--> Ru-MeCN + py has also been investigated at different temperatures with and without irradiation. In the absence of irradiation at 326 K, the thermal process gives kinetic constants of k2 = 1.4 x 10(-5) s(-1) (DeltaH(++) = 108 +/- 3 kJ mol(-1), DeltaS(++) = -8 +/- 9 J K(-1) mol(-1)) and k-2 = 2.9 x 10(-6) s(-1) (DeltaH(++) = 121 +/- 1 kJ mol(-1), DeltaS(++) = 18 +/- 3 J K(-1) mol(-1)). The phototriggered process is faster and consists of preequilibrium formation of an intermediate that thermally decays to the final Ru-MeCN complex with an apparent rate constant of (k1Khnu)app = 1.8 x 10(-4) s(-1) at 304 K, under the continuous irradiation experimental conditions used.

Abstract
The synthesis and properties of 3 new ligand-bridged bimetallic complexes, 1(2+), 2(2+), and 3(2+), containing [RuCl([9]aneS(3))](+) metal centers are reported. Each complex was bridged by a different ditopic ligand. 1(2+) is bridged by 3,6-bis(2-pyridyl)-1,2,4,5-tetrazine (bptz), while 2(2+) and 3(2+) are bridged by 2,3-bis(2-pyridyl)pyrazine (dpp) and 2,2'-bipyrimidine (bpym), respectively. The Ru([II]) isovalent states of these complexes have been investigated using a variety of techniques. In the case of 3(2+), X-ray crystallography studies show preferential crystallization of an anti form with respect to coordinated chloride ligands (crystal data for [3][Cl(2)].4H(2)O: C(20)H(38)Cl(4)N(4)O(4)Ru(2)S(6), monoclinic, space group P2(1)/a, a = 10.929(14), b = 13.514(17), c = 11.299(16) A, beta = 90.52(1), V = 1669 A(3), Z = 2). UV/vis spectroscopy shows that spectra of these complexes are dominated by intraligand (pi-->pi) and metal-to-ligand Ru(d)-->L(pi) charge transfer transitions. Electrochemical studies reveal that metal-metal interactions are sufficiently intense to generate the Ru(III)/Ru(II) mixed valence [[RuCl([9]aneS(3))(2)](L-L)](3+) state, where L-L = individual bridging ligands. Although the 1(3+), 2(3+), and 3(3+) mixed valence states were EPR silent at room temperature and 77 K, isotropic solution spectra were observed for the electrochemically generated radical cations 1(+), 2(+), and 3(+), with 1(+) displaying well-resolved hyperfine coupling to bridging ligand nitrogens. Using UV/vis/NIR spectroelectrochemistry, we investigated optical properties of the mixed valence complexes. All three showed intervalence charge transfer (IVCT) bands that are much more intense than electrochemical data indicate. Indeed, a comparison of IVCT data for 1(3+) with an analogous structure containing [(NH3)(3)Ru](2+) metal centers shows that the IVCT in the new complex is an order of magnitude more intense. It is concluded that although the new complexes show relatively weak electrostatic interactions, they possess large resonance energies.
