Effect of Micropollutants (Organic Xenobiotics and Heavy Metals) on the Activated Sludge Process

Monitoring 60Co activity for the characterization of the sorption process of Co2+ ions in municipal activated sludge

In large volumes produced activated sludges from wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) with low concentrations of heavy metals can be utilized as agricultural fertilizers and soil conditioners. Increased contents of toxic xenobiotics are limiting factors that affect the utilization of these heterogeneous wastes. The main aim of our paper was to show the utilization of dried activated sludge (DAS) from municipal WWTP as potential Co²⁺ ions sorbent i.e. for non-agricultural purposes. The radio indicator method by radionuclide ⁶⁰Co and γ-spectrometry for characterization DAS sorption properties was used. DAS soluble and solid fractions were characterized by biochemical, ETAAS and CEC analysis. The sorption of Co²⁺ ions by DAS was rapid process and equilibrium was reached within 2 h. Sorption capacity of DAS (Q) increased with the initial concentration of CoCl₂ in the range from 100 to 4,000 μmol l⁻¹, reaching 20 and 160 μmol g⁻¹. Obtained Q values were depent on pH value from 2.0 to 8.0. The maximum sorption capacity (Q_max) of DAS at pH 6 calculated from mathematical model of Langmuir adsorption isotherm was 175 ± 9 μmol g⁻¹. FT-IR analyses showed the crucial role of carboxyl functional groups of DAS surfaces on cobalt uptake. For confirmation ion-exchange mechanism in sorption process of Co²⁺ ions by DAS scanning electron microscopy and EDX analysis were used.

Efficacy and reliability of upgraded industrial treatment plant at Porto Marghera, near Venice, Italy, in removing nutrients and dangerous micropollutants from petrochemical wastewaters

Chemical and petrochemical wastewaters contain a host of contaminants that require different treatment strategies. Regulation of macropollutants and micropollutants in the final discharge from industrial wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) have become increasingly stringent in recent decades, requiring many WWTPs to be upgraded. This article presents an analysis of a WWTP treating petrochemicals in Porto Marghera, Italy, that recently was upgraded following legislative changes. Because of strict legal limits for macropollutants and micropollutants and a lack of space necessary for a full-scale WWTP overhaul, the existing activated sludge tank was converted into a membrane biological reactor. The paper presents experimental data collected during a five-month investigation showing the removal rates achieved by the upgraded plant for macropollutants (particularly nitrogen compounds) and micropollutants (heavy metals and organic and inorganic toxic compounds).

Mechanisms of heavy-metal removal by activated sludge

This paper investigates the chemical mechanisms operating in cadmium and lead removal by activated sludge in sequencing batch reactors. Selective extraction and acid digestion of sludge samples denoted that both Cd and Pb are mainly present as surface-bound metals. Characterisation of sludge samples by potentiometric titrations and IR spectra suggested that carboxylic and amino groups are the main active sites responsible for the binding properties of the biomass. Simulation of metal speciation implemented with complexation constants determined in biosorption tests, showed that cadmium predominates as biosorbed species, while lead was mainly removed by precipitation.
