Correlations and impact of anaerobic digestion operating parameters on the start-up duration: Database construction for robust start-up guidelines

Anaerobic digestion (AD) has become a popular technique for organic waste management while offering economic and environmental advantages. As AD becomes increasingly prevalent worldwide, research efforts are primarily focused on optimizing its processes. During the operation of AD systems, the occurrence of unstable events is inevitable. So far, numerous conclusions have been drawn from full and lab-scale studies regarding the driving factors of start-up perturbations. However, the lack of standardized practices reported in start-up studies raises concerns about the comparability and reliability of obtained data. This study aims to develop a knowledge database and investigate the possibility of applying machine learning techniques on experimentation-extracted data to assist start-up planning and monitoring. Thus, a standardized database referencing 75 cases of start-up of one-stage wet continuously-stirred tank reactors (CSTR) processing agricultural, industrial, or municipal organic effluent in mono-digestion from 31 studies was constructed. 10 % of the total observations included in this database concern failed start-up experiments. Then, correlations between the parameters and their impacts on the start-up duration were studied using multivariate analysis and a model-based ranking methodology. Insights into trends of choices were highlighted through the correlation analysis of the database. As such, scenarios favoring short start-up duration were found to involve relatively low retention times (average initial and final hydraulic retention times, (HRTi) and (HRTf) of 26.25 and 20.6 days, respectively), high mean organic loading rates (average OLRmean of 5.24 g VS·d-1·L -1) and the processing of highly fermentable substrates (average feed volatile solids (VSfeed) of 81.35 g L-1). The model-based ranking of AD parameters demonstrated that the HRTf, the VSfeed, and the target temperature (Tf) have the strongest impact on the start-up duration, receiving the highest relative scores among the evaluated AD parameters. The database could serve as a reference for comparison purposes of future start-up studies allowing the identification of factors that should be closely controlled.

Modifications to the anaerobic digestion model no. 1 (ADM1) for enhanced understanding and application of the anaerobic treatment processes - A comprehensive review

Anaerobic digestion (AD) is a promising method for the recovery of resources and energy from organic wastes. Correspondingly, AD modelling has also been developed in recent years. The International Water Association (IWA) Anaerobic Digestion Model No. 1 (ADM1) is currently the most commonly used structured AD model. However, as substrates become more complex and our understanding of the AD mechanism grows, both systematic and specific modifications have been applied to the ADM1. Modified models have provided a diverse range of application besides AD processes, such as fermentation and biogas upgrading processes. This paper reviews research on the modification of the ADM1, with a particular focus on processes, kinetics, stoichiometry and parameters, which are the major elements of the model. The paper begins with a brief introduction to the ADM1, followed by a summary of modifications, including extensions to the model structure, modifications to kinetics (including inhibition functions) and stoichiometry, as well as simplifications to the model. The paper also covers kinetic parameter estimation and validation of the model, as well as practical applications of the model to a variety of scenarios. The review highlights the need for improvements in simulating AD and biogas upgrading processes, as well as the lack of full-scale applications to other substrates besides sludge (such as food waste and agricultural waste). Future research directions are suggested for model development based on detailed understanding of the anaerobic treatment mechanisms, and the need to recover of valuable products.

Modelling anaerobic, aerobic and partial nitritation-anammox granular sludge reactors - A review

Wastewater treatment processes with granular sludge are compact and are becoming increasingly popular. Interest has been accompanied by the development of mathematical models. This contribution simultaneously reviews available models in the scientific literature for anaerobic, aerobic and partial nitritation-anammox granular sludge reactors because they comprise common phenomena (e.g. liquid, gas and granule transport) and thus pose similar challenges. Many of the publications were found to have no clearly defined goal. The importance of a goal is stressed because it determines the appropriate model complexity and helps other potential users to find a suitable model in the vast amount of literature. Secondly, a wide variety was found in the model features. This review explains the chosen modelling assumptions based on the different reactor types and goals wherever possible, but some assumptions appeared to be habitual within fields of research, without clear reason. We therefore suggest further research to more clearly define the range of operational conditions and goals for which certain simplifying assumptions can be made, e.g. when intragranule solute transport can be lumped in apparent kinetics and when biofilm models are needed, which explicitly calculate substrate concentration gradients inside granules. Furthermore, research is needed to better mechanistically understand detachment, removal of influent particulate matter and changes in the mixing behaviour inside anaerobic systems, before these phenomena can be adequately incorporated in models. Finally, it is suggested to perform full-scale model validation studies for aerobic and anammox reactors. Architecture controlled PtNi@mSiO2 and Pt–NiO@mSiO2 mesoporous core–shell nanocatalysts for enhanced p-chloronitrobenzene hydrogenation selectivity

The p-CAN selectivity over Pt–NiO@mSiO₂ and PtNi@mSiO₂ is significantly enhanced while maintaining the high activity of the Pt catalysts.

A modeling approach to describe ZVI-based anaerobic system

Zero-valent iron (ZVI) is increasingly being added into anaerobic reactors to enhance the biological conversion of various less biodegradable pollutants (LBPs). Our study aimed to establish a new structure model based on the Anaerobic Digestion Model No. 1 (ADM1) to simulate such a ZVI-based anaerobic reactor. Three new processes, i.e., electron release from ZVI corrosion, H2 formation from ZVI corrosion, and transformation of LBPs, were integrated into ADM1. The established model was calibrated and tested using the experimental data from one published study, and validated using the data from another work. A good relationship between the predicted and measured results indicates that the proposed model was appropriate to describe the performance of the ZVI-based anaerobic system. Our model could provide more precise strategies for the design, development, and application of anaerobic systems especially for treating various LBPs-containing wastewaters.
