Theoretical and Experimental Study of Lactic Acid Stripping from Loaded Organic Phase

Mineral Acid Co-Extraction in Reactive Extraction of Lactic Acid Using a Thymol-Menthol Deep Eutectic Solvent as a Green Modifier

Carboxylic acids can be isolated from fermentation broths using reactive liquid-liquid extraction, offering an alternative to the environmentally harmful state-of-the-art process of precipitating calcium lactate. To enhance the sustainability of liquid-liquid extraction processes, greener solvents, such as natural deep eutectic solvents, are investigated. However, fermentation broths often exhibit pH values unsuitable for carboxylic acid extraction, which can be adjusted using mineral acids, though mineral acids may be co-extracted. In this study, we systematically examine the co-extraction of hydrochloric, nitric, sulfuric, and phosphoric acid during extraction and back-extraction of lactic acid. The solvent phase consisted of tri-n-octylamine, trioctylphosphine oxide, or tributyl phosphate diluted in a thymol-menthol deep eutectic solvent. The back-extraction was conducted using a diluent swing with p-cymene as the antisolvent and water as the receiving phase. Tri-n-octylamine showed the highest efficiency for lactic acid (up to 29.8%) but also the highest co-extraction of mineral acids (up to 50.9%). In contrast, trioctylphosphine oxide exhibited a lower but more selective lactic acid extraction (5.94%) with low mineral acids co-extraction (0.135%). Overall, the highest co-extraction was observed for phosphoric acid and the lowest for nitric acid. In conclusion, the selected solvent phase composition and mineral acid influence the co-extraction and, thus, final product purity. The successful application of the natural deep eutectic solvent as the modifier enhances the sustainability of liquid-liquid extraction processes.

Recovery of Lactic Acid from Corn Stover Hemicellulose-Derived Liquor

Lactic acid is an attractive target platform chemical obtained from biorefinery processes based on renewable resources. This study focuses on the recovery of lactic acid from corn stover hemicellulose-derived liquor. Two processes were investigated comparatively. In process I, under the optimized conditions of 10 wt % trioctylamine/octanol, the extraction efficiency and distribution coefficient of lactic acid were 50.8% and 1.03, respectively. In process II, a salting-out extraction step was introduced, which had significant impacts on the following reactive extraction process. The extraction efficiency and distribution coefficient of lactic acid were about 32.2% and 3.85 times higher than that of process I, respectively. All residual sugars and most of the salts (82.8%) could be removed by the salting-out extraction system used. Additionally, five extraction cycles with back-extraction and solvent regeneration were performed, and the results showed that the extraction system still exhibited stable performance. Effective extraction of lactic acid from crude reaction liquor of corn stover was realized by first salting-out and consecutive reactive extraction, which provided a potential method for recovery of lactic acid from actual biomass-derived liquor.

Reactive Extraction of Lactic Acid, Formic Acid and Acetic Acid from Aqueous Solutions with Tri-n-octylamine/1-Octanol/n-Undecane

The present work develops the basics for the isolation of lactic acid, acetic acid and formic acid from a single as well as a mixed feed stream, as is present, for example, in fermentation broth for lactic acid production. Modelling of the phase equilibria data is performed using the law of mass action and shows that the acids are extracted according to their pka value, where formic acid is preferably extracted in comparison to lactic and acetic acid. Back-extraction was performed by 1 M NaHCO3 solution and shows the same tendency regarding the pka value. Based on lactic acid, the solvent phase composition, consisting of tri-n-octylamine/1-octanol/n-undecane, was optimized in terms of the distribution coefficient. The data clearly indicate that, compared to physical extraction, mass transfer can be massively enhanced by reactive extraction. With increasing tri-n-octylamine and 1-octanol concentration, the equilibrium constant increases. However, even when mass transfer increases, tri-n-octylamine concentrations above 40 wt%, lead to third phase formation, which needs to be prevented for technical application. The presented data are the basis for the transfer to liquid membrane permeation, which enables the handling of emulsion tending systems.
